Winnetka Music Festival wins
inaugural Best Music Festival award
The bands are booked. The
lineup is locked. The sponsors
are secured. The vendors, stages,
food trucks, beer tents, volunteers,
green rooms, VIP lounge
and marketing are set.
The Winnetka Music Festival
team is ready to go and they’re
three months out. They’re a real
music fest with real bands - built
right into the middle of downtown
Winnetka. How did that
happen? The Winnetka Music
Festival team wants to catch
readers up on the fun (and work)
they’ve been doing behind the
scenes to bring an authentic fest
vibe to the suburbs of the North
Shore. This is not a Village of
Winnetka block party with cover
bands – this is an industry-recognized
music fest that is open
to all. Their bands are nationally
touring acts whose music is on
Spotify, Apple Music and radio.
Some have played Bonnaroo,
some late night TV, some were
top picks at SXSW (South by
Southwest). They curate their
lineup with handpicked acts who
are ready to break … so you can
say, “I saw them when ...”
This year, the Winnetka Music
Festival is Friday, June 21, and
Saturday, June 22. No Sunday.
The fest kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
June 21 with five acts running on
two main stages until 11 p.m. An
EDM (electronic dance music)
set will close the night. The fest
reopens on June 22 with five acts
on the Family Stage running from
9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. for kids and
‘tweens. The Chapel Stage at Lincoln
Avenue and Pine Street is a
seated listening venue with seven
acts from 1-8 p.m. The two Main
Stages, at Lincoln Avenue and
Elm Street and Winnetka Community
House parking lot, run
from 1-11 p.m. with 11 acts on
alternating stages. The lineup is
diverse and exciting with something
for every music taste.
New this year is Sunrise Beach
Yoga, an Acoustic Café and Art
Installations. They’ve moved
the entire fest to the east side
of Green Bay Road this year to
make it easier and safer and the
Family Stage moves to the Village
Green.
The festival is free on Friday
and during the day Saturday, but
a $20 ticket (wristband) is needed
for Saturday evening. Attendees
are encouraged to get their tickets
now as they are selling fast
and space is limited. The festival
headliners Moon Taxi and Dorothy
are a big draw and sell out
their shows. Don’t miss out. VIP
Tickets are also available for an
enhanced experience including
free food and bar. For more information
on tickets, visit
winnetkamusicfestival.com.
The concept of a music fest is
to get a small taste of a lot of music
in one venue, hence their alternating
stages that run all day.
Their fest hopes to bring the best
music and summer experience to
attendees, and is made even better
with a community feel, where
neighbors and friends enjoy it
together.
One last note of thanks – The
Winnetka Music Festival couldn’t
do this without its attendees. To
the 15,000 people who attended
last year they say thank you.
Those who attended helped put
the festival on the map – the artists
and booking agents are calling
them now. The Winnetka Music
Festival has arrived.
Music Festival team. For more
The Spa at North Shore Aesthetics voted Best Med Spa again
It is no surprise that the
medical spa at North Shore
Aesthetics was voted Best
Med Spa on the North
Shore once again. Under the
leadership of Dr. Benjamin
Schlechter, M.D., F.A.C.S,
a board-certified plastic surgeon
and the founder and
medical director of The Spa
at North Shore Aesthetics,
the med spa continues to
be on the cutting edge of
medical skin care and laser
treatments. He opened the
spa in conjunction with his
Northbrook plastic surgery
practice. As the owner and
medical director of The Spa
at Spring Ridge for more
than 25 years, he felt confident
that he could bring his
unique formula to the Chicagoland
area and enjoy the
success he has seen at his
other location.
The recent selection of
the Spa at North Shore
Aesthetics as the top med
spa on the North Shore
again has been a confirmation
of this. The most important
ingredients to the
success of his spas is his
involvement in the day-today
business operations,
training of his staff and his
commitment to staying at
the forefront of medical
skin care and laser procedures.
So often at many
spas, the medical director
is in name only and plays
no active role in patient
care, and has little-to-no
knowledge of the treatments,
products or lasers.
He has attended product
training for all of the skin
care lines carried in the
spa. He is also trained on
and uses the lasers for
patient care. Schlechter
meets with patients, and
plans the skin care and laser
protocols and follows
them closely.
Dr. Zein Obagi, the creator
of the Obagi and ZO
skin care lines, has a motto
– “It’s never too early or
too late to have amazing
skin.” It is a philosophy
Schlechter follows in his
own spa and practice. To
enhance his understanding
of skin care he traveled to
Obagi’s facility in California
to work with Obagi
directly and advance his
understanding of medical
skin care. Schlechter
said it was one of the best
trainings he has attended.
Schlechter said he cannot
overemphasize the importance
of initial and ongoing
training for himself
and his staff.
“I invest a lot of time
and resources into our
aestheticians so that they
provide superior services
to our spa clients,” he said.
“One of the first things I
tell the service providers
is you have one chance to
impress the client, and if
the service you provide is
not outstanding, they will
likely go elsewhere.”
Schlechter is looking
forward to expanding his
med spa, and has recently
purchased additional space
to do so. Exciting new
things are always happening
at the spa, and he
encourages everyone to
come in for their unique
complimentary new client
offer. He knows the importance
of having physician
knowledge and accessibility
to his staff which is
invaluable in a med spa
setting. The Spa at North
Shore Aesthetics is truly a
medical spa like no other.
Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria takes home 3 North Shore Choice Awards
Considered the oldest family
name in Chicago pizza, Lou
Malnati’s is as rich in history as
its pizza is in flavor. Lou Malnati
got his start in the 1940s working
in Chicago’s first deep dish pizzeria.
He took his pizza expertise
to Lincolnwood, a northern suburb
of Chicago, where he and his
wife, Jean, opened the first Lou
Malnati’s Pizzeria on March 17,
1971. Lou was known for his
fun-loving character as well as
making Chicago’s best pizza.
Loyal patrons lined the streets on
opening day for a taste of his delicious
deep-dish creations. Lou
always thought it was funny that
an Italian should open a pizzeria
in a Jewish neighborhood on an
Irish holiday. But that was Lou’s
style – he loved all types of people
and didn’t care much about
what people thought.
While Lou Malnati’s Pizzerias
have been proudly serving
the Chicagoland area for almost
50 years, most things remain the
same. Every Lou Malnati’s pizza
is handmade from scratch using
the finest and freshest ingredients.
Whether customers prefer
theirs well done, gooey, or easy
on the sausage, they always
make their pizza just the way
they like it. Lou Malnati’s commitment
to quality is evident in
every bite when you taste their
famous buttercrust, exclusive
sausage blend, creamy mozzarella
cheese and tangy California
vine-ripened tomatoes.
At Lou’s, customers will never
doubt each pizza was made with
care and special attention. One
thing customers may not know is
that each year a team from Lou
Malnati’s goes to California and
meets personally with the tomato
growers. The finest vine-ripened
plum tomatoes are then blended
and canned exclusively for Lou
Malnati’s use. The trip is well
worth the effort when the result
is continuing the Lou Malnati’s
tradition as the best deep dish
THE COMMUNITIES OF THE
NORTH SHORE!
pizzeria in Chicago.
Relationships are key to Lou
Malnati’s success, as they’ve
worked with the same Wisconsin
dairy farm for more than
45 years as their source for the
perfect mozzarella cheese. The
farm’s relationship with Lou
Malnati’s and the unique flavor
and texture of their cheese
is vital to their pizza recipe. The
same goes for their exclusive
sausage blend, which has been
produced by a single partner of
Lou Malnati’s over the years and
remains their most popular topping
And lastly, their dough is a
labor of love handmade daily in
each of their pizzerias. Once it’s
perfectly prepared and given the
right amount of time to rise, it is
patted out by hand and raised up
high on the sides of a seasoned
deep-dish pizza pan. The secret
recipe for the flaky, buttery crust
has been passed down for generations
and is unmatched in flavor
and taste.
Hungry yet? Lou Malnati’s
Pizzeria hopes so, because
they’re hungry to serve their customers.
But don’t forget: knife
and fork recommended.
The Goddard School offers best childhood
preparation for success on the North Shore
For more than 30 years, The
Goddard School has been a
trusted name among parents
and families. Its classrooms are
safe, nurturing environments
for children six weeks to six
years, offering age-appropriate
opportunities to explore
and discover. From infants to
toddlers and preschoolers to
pre-kindergarteners, highly
trained teachers lead each child
to reach developmental milestones,
preparing the children
for social and academic success.
At The Goddard School located
in Skokie, the on-site
owners, Andrew and Mary Fratini,
work to make sure every
family enjoys a warm, positive
experience. They strive
to provide the best quality
program for each child yearround,
offering full-time and
part-time schedules with open
enrollment. The F.L.EX. (Fun
Learning Experience) Learning
Program ensures that they
meet high standards specific
to early learning, development
and care.
The F.L.EX. Learning Program
is grounded in research
on how children learn best:
children experience the deepest,
most genuine learning
when they are having fun. It’s
designed to help build each
child’s emotional, academic,
social, creative and physical
skills – including 21st century
skills such as communication,
collaboration, creativity and
critical thinking — to provide
a well-rounded experience and
help each one become schoolready,
career-ready and lifeready.
The 21st century skills also
tie in directly with STEAM
learning (science, technology,
engineering, arts and mathematics).
Introducing these subjects
early on helps promote
children’s natural curiosity in
them, increasing the chance
that children will pursue
STEAM-related careers later
on in life.
“Supporting STEAM learning
at the preschool level involves
identifying activities children
naturally do for opportunities
to further guide them,” Andrew
said. “When children solve puzzles
or play with blocks, they
create pathways in their brains
that help with more advanced
STEAM skills later on.”
The preschool and pre-kindergarten
classrooms integrate
this play-based learning philosophy
into their lesson plans.
In the preschool classroom,
children use a variety of interesting,
hands-on learning and
reading materials to make play
more complex and challenging.
Their play also becomes more
social and cooperative as they
build their social skills, make
friends and learn to collaborate.
Children continue their journey
of exploration and discovery
in the pre-kindergarten
classroom. Teachers help them
apply their developing literacy
and math skills through fun, purposeful
learning experiences.
Play-based learning is so effective
that the results of a recent
review by the Children’s
Progress Academic Assessment
(CPAA) show that Goddard
School students score 45%
higher on mathematics and literacy
assessments compared to
non-Goddard peers. CPAA is
an early childhood assessment
system that assists teachers in
making informed and individualized
instructional decisions.
Lewis Floor & Home offers chic style
from floor to ceiling in the North Shore
Under one roof, customers of Lewis
Floor & Home will find carpet, tile, area
rugs, wood, luxury vinyl flooring, countertops
and window treatments.
Everything their eye, heart, imagination
and budget can desire for their distinctive
home is here along with something
else no one offers — the Lewis reputation
for quality and service. It’s all on
the premises, proudly displayed for the
customer’s one-stop shopping pleasure
in a 26,000-square-foot showroom and
33,000-square-foot warehouse.
In the beginning, dreams were big, but
capabilities were smaller. First opened by
Earl Lewis in the early 1950s, the smallish
800-square-foot facility was devoted
exclusively to carpeting and carpet cleaning.
Since then, three generations of family
members have grown the business,
which has expanded several times under
Steve Lewis’s direction. In 1997, to better
meet customer demand for greater flooring
selection, Steve purchased the building
and property adjacent to the original
location and changed the company name
to reflect even more goods and services.
Now, Lewis Floor & Home is able to offer
tile, wood, vinyl, countertops, window
treatments and a rug gallery.
The rest is history – featuring the absolute
best in home design with fresh new
ideas and fashions, and constantly evolving
installation services. They’ve changed
with the times and set the bar, but have
never lost sight of the fundamentals that
have defined distinctions forever: quality
products, a personal touch, community
involvement, price points for every budget,
a world-class caring staff and the best
styles offered. Oh, and one more thing
that has never changed — you can always
find a Mr. Lewis here. Try that in a big
Sportsman’s Country Club
voted top driving range in
NS Choice Awards
For a third consecutive time,
North Shore residents have selected
Northbrook Park District’s practice
range at Sportsman’s Country Club
as their top choice for golf in the
22nd Century Media North Shore
Choice Awards.
“We’re excited to kick off the
2019 season with this recognition
from North Shore residents,” Director
of Golf Greg Baron said. “We’re
proud of our staff and PGA professionals
who deliver an enjoyable experience
to the golfers practicing at
our public range. It truly is an honor
to have the readers choose us as the
best in the area for the third time.”
Sportsman’s practice range is
designed to accommodate players
of every level, from experienced
golfers to beginners. The District
puts 42,000 new Pinnacle premium
quickly gets golfers hitting balls with
the world’s best automated range
Ravinia Plumbing celebrates third
straight Best Plumber award
“It’s like having a
plumber in your family.”
That’s how one Winnetka
customer describes
Ravinia Plumbing. Obviously
she is not alone, as
evidenced by the company’s
selection for the
third consecutive year as
Best Plumber in the North
Shore as awarded by 22nd
Century Media North
Shore Choice Awards.
“This is a great honor
for us,” said David Ariano,
president of Ravinia
Plumbing, “especially
since this award is the result
of voting by our customers
– the people we
have the pleasure of working
with every day.”
This award is just one
of several received by the
company. A perennial Best
Pick’s choice, Ravinia
Plumbing recently earned
the Angie’s List Super Service
Award for the ninth
time and is a six-time
winner of Carrier Corp.’s
Presidents Award.
“These awards are very
gratifying,” Ariano said.
“But what is even more
rewarding is the superior
ratings our customers give
us. More than 95 percent
of our customers say they
would recommend us.
That’s why we like to think
we are the North Shore’s
most trusted name for
plumbing, sewers, heating
and cooling and electrical
service.”
Ravinia Plumbing’s
plumbing services are designed
to keep things flowing
in customers’ homes
and businesses. Services
include repair and replacement
of faucets and fixtures,
water heaters and
pipes.
Other plumbing services
are designed to prevent
your home from flooding
and include repair and replacement
of sumps and
battery back-up pumps,
as well as drain and sewer
line rodding and sewer line
video inspections.
“Our basement flooded
for the first time in 28
years. Your response was
quick and wonderful. You
guys rock,” a Northbrook
customer told the company.
Ravinia Plumbing also
offers 24/7/365 service
and discounts, extended
warranties and expedited
service through its Home
Care Club. Additionally,
Ravinia Plumbing possesses
all required licenses
and insurance. Its technicians
undergo background
checks and thorough training.
They are also drug
checked.
Ravinia Plumbing is
family owned and operating,
and has been serving
the North Shore for 91
years.
“These are our roots;
this is our community,”
Ariano said. “The people
we serve are our families,
neighbors and friends. We
aren’t going anywhere.”
Franz Jewelers Ltd named best
jewelry store by North Shore residents
The owners of Franz Jewelers
Ltd in Northbrook are delighted
and honored to have
been chosen Best Jewelry Store
by residents of the North Shore
in 22nd Century Media’s recent
North Shore Choice Awards.
Franz Pintz first opened the
doors of his business in 1966,
as “Northbrook’s First Jeweler.”
Franz, a watchmaker trained
in his native Germany, came
to the United States in 1957
with a $100 loan in his pocket
and a dream to someday open
his own business. With a lot
of hard work and a bit of luck,
that dream came true in August
1966. He has been in business
ever since. His son Frank, a
graduate gemologist, who studied
at the Gemological Institute
of America (GIA), joined his
father in 1983. His daughter
Doris is also part of the team, as
well as Ilse, who came to work
for Franz 29 years ago after her
father retired and closed their
family jewelry store.
“We are a bit of a hidden
gem,” said Franz, laughing.
They are part of downtown
Northbrook, but not in a shopping
center where you would
expect to find a store. Franz
Jewelers is located at 1220
Meadow Road, on the first floor
of the three-story office building,
not a typical place for a
merchant.
Being in business for almost
53 years, Franz has seen
it all. At the age of 92, he still
can be found at the store three
days a week. They have survived
recessions, soaring gold
prices, and the coming and going
of many other jewelers in
the area. The rise of internet
commerce now threatens many
small shops. Frank and Franz
attribute their longevity to providing
a personal, professional
experience for every customer,
and are proud to be serving their
third generation of North Shore
families.
“Word of mouth is our best
advertising,” Frank said. “We
offer a friendly, knowledgeable,
no-pressure experience. We are
jewelers, not just salespeople,
who know the industry and
stand behind our products and
services.”
Franz doesn’t believe in phony
sales or gimmicks.
“We don’t mark up our prices
so we can constantly run 50 percent
off sales,” he said. “Honesty
and trust is a big part of this
industry.”
What Franz has done since
his first year in business is hold
an annual Mother’s Day Sale.
It’s a one-week only store-wide
sale, and many customers stock
up and buy gifts for future occasions.
“We have wrapped many
items in holiday paper during
this sale,” said Franz with a
smile.
This year’s Mother’s Day
Sale is May 4-11.
IBJI offers patients collaborative,
integrated care, including
advanced MRI and bone density
diagnostics, sports medicine,
rheumatology, podiatry, pain
management, wellness, rehabilitation,
and surgical and non-surgical
treatments and therapies.
Comprehensive care offered all
in one place enables physicians,
therapists and staff to work
closely together so that patients
and their families achieve better
outcomes. Collaborative care
is also more efficient. In many
cases, IBJI services are substantially
less expensive than those
provided at large health care systems
and emergency rooms.
IBJI’s seven OrthoAccess
walk-in clinics offer same-day
immediate orthopedic care.
Choosing to be seen at an IBJI
OrthoAccess immediate care
clinic not only allows patients
to receive great care from their
orthopedic specialists, but they
will also have access to on-site
advanced imaging technology,
be seen the same day with significantly
less wait time compared
to an ER visit, and save up to
80% compared to the cost of the
emergency room.
Have an injury on the field and
need quick information on where
to get immediate care? IBJI has
patients covered with their new
Sports Access app, available in
the App Store and on Google
Play. Patients can use this app at
home or on the go, to find an OrthoAccess
clinic near them. The
Sports Access app will also enable
patients to request complimentary
injury screenings.
IBJI thanks 22nd Century Media
readers for voting for them
as they continue to help patients
move better and live better.
Lake Forest Country Day School voted Best Preschool,
Private K-8 School in North Shore Choice Awards
Lake Forest Country
Day School is delighted
to be named 22nd Century
Media’s Best Private K-8
Grade School on the North
Shore for the second consecutive
year.
“We are deeply honored
by this recognition,” said
Head of School Joy Hurd.
“This award is a direct reflection
of the partnership
between our families and
the faculty in delivering
the school’s mission of inspired
teaching, academic
rigor, attention to individual
needs, and a commitment
to responsible citizenship.”
Located on more than 30
acres of property, LFCDS
offers programming for
students ages 2 through
eighth grade, and provides
a rich and diverse educational
experience grounded
in rigorous academics,
arts, athletics, and socialemotional
learning.
Drawing students from
more than 35 local communities,
the school offers
access to students
across all grade levels to
engaging learning spaces
that include expansive
outdoor classrooms, a
2,800-square-foot innovation
center, a recently
renovated gymnasium,
and a newly reimagined
performing arts center
which opened this past
fall in time for the LFCDS
Special Speaker Series,
an event that welcomes
to campus two nationally
renowned child development
experts each year.
“What LFCDS does
exceptionally well is to
know, love, and challenge
every child in our care and
to prepare our students
for demanding secondary
school experiences and a
lifetime of learning,” Hurd
said. “Our students know
how to communicate effectively,
they write clearly
and cogently, and they
speak before an audience
with poise and confidence.
“We also teach humancentered
methodologies
like Design Thinking,
which relies upon asking
questions and developing
empathy for others to arrive
at the best solutions
to problems that people
face.”
The school’s classrooms,
technology offerings, laboratories,
art spaces, and
playing fields all serve as
vital staging grounds for
a rich program, designed
to prepare LFCDS graduates
to be compassionate,
independent thinkers with
a strong sense of personal
integrity and intellectual
curiosity. LFCDS faculty
and staff live the school’s
mission with unparalleled
dedication. Whether for
an open house, a special
speaker series lecture, or
an individual campus tour,
visitors to the school experience
the palpable warmth
and caring that is a hallmark
of the LFCDS community.
In short, Lake Forest
Country Day School
fosters an environment in
which students feel empowered
to dream, try
new things, take academic
risks, and achieve at their
highest level.
“Our ultimate goal at
LFCDS is to graduate students
who are able to think
critically, self-advocate,
persevere when faced with
a challenge, create and
communicate in innovative
ways, and interpret the
world around them,” Hurd
said. “The school endeavors
to help each student
craft a durable foundation
that will provide them with
greater opportunities to
pursue their passions and
make a difference in the
world.”
Lake Forest Country Day
School is located at 145 S.
Green Bay Road in Lake Forest.
possibilities and adventure,
where kids can be
creative and explore, play,
and tinker with cuttingedge
technology. Imagine
a place where today’s kids
invent tomorrow.
Introducing Codeverse,
Wilmette’s best interactive
coding studio for
kids ages 6-13. Located at
517 Green Bay Road, the
4,000-square-foot stateof-the-art
facility is riddled
3D printers, strobe lights,
speakers, and TV’s - all of
which can be programmed
by kids.
This summer, Codeverse
offers three fantastic
coding camps for tech-loving
kids:
Coding FUNdamentals
(Beginner): Whether
the child is new to coding
or has been grabbing for
the family iPad since they
could toddle, this camp is
perfect for beginners or
experienced coders alike.
Campers spend a week
learning the fundamentals
of coding, building their
very own video games, creating
3D designs, and programming
dozens of objects
featured in the studio.
This camp’s focus is coding,
3D printing, robotics
and game development.
MakerLab (Intermediate):
Campers learn all
about the design process
by building their own
board game. They’ll program
Codeverse’s CNC
machine to carve their
game board and 3D printer
to make their pawns.
Campers will also code a
mobile version of the game
to share with friends and
family. By the end of this
week, they’ll earn the official
title of game designer.
This camp’s focus is coding,
3D printing, CNC machine,
design process and
game development.
Robots & Circuitry
(Intermediate): Campers
design and build a real
robot, then participate in
fun challenges using their
cool new robot friend and
the power of circuitry. All
campers will work with
wires, batteries and lights
as they learn all about circuits.
This camp’s focus is
robotics, circuitry and design
process.
All weeklong camps
run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Monday-Friday throughout
June, July and August.
Camp includes complimentary
early drop-off at 8
a.m. and late pick-up at 4
p.m. All food is included,
with flexibility in dietary
restrictions.
All camps have an instructor
to student ratio of
1:8 and are taught by certified
K-12 Chicagoland
instructors, designers and
coders.
