Franz Jewelers Ltd named best
jewelry store by North Shore residents
The owners of Franz Jewelers
Ltd in Northbrook are delighted
and honored to have
been chosen Best Jewelry Store
by residents of the North Shore
in 22nd Century Media’s recent
North Shore Choice Awards.
Franz Pintz first opened the
doors of his business in 1966,
as “Northbrook’s First Jeweler.”
Franz, a watchmaker trained
in his native Germany, came
to the United States in 1957
with a $100 loan in his pocket
and a dream to someday open
his own business. With a lot
of hard work and a bit of luck,
that dream came true in August
1966. He has been in business
ever since. His son Frank, a
graduate gemologist, who studied
at the Gemological Institute
of America (GIA), joined his
father in 1983. His daughter
Doris is also part of the team, as
well as Ilse, who came to work
for Franz 29 years ago after her
father retired and closed their
family jewelry store.
“We are a bit of a hidden
gem,” said Franz, laughing.
They are part of downtown
Northbrook, but not in a shopping
center where you would
expect to find a store. Franz
Jewelers is located at 1220
Meadow Road, on the first floor
of the three-story office building,
not a typical place for a
merchant.
Being in business for almost
53 years, Franz has seen
it all. At the age of 92, he still
can be found at the store three
days a week. They have survived
recessions, soaring gold
prices, and the coming and going
of many other jewelers in
the area. The rise of internet
commerce now threatens many
small shops. Frank and Franz
attribute their longevity to providing
a personal, professional
experience for every customer,
and are proud to be serving their
third generation of North Shore
families.
“Word of mouth is our best
advertising,” Frank said. “We
offer a friendly, knowledgeable,
no-pressure experience. We are
jewelers, not just salespeople,
who know the industry and
stand behind our products and
services.”
Franz doesn’t believe in phony
sales or gimmicks.
“We don’t mark up our prices
so we can constantly run 50 percent
off sales,” he said. “Honesty
and trust is a big part of this
industry.”
What Franz has done since
his first year in business is hold
an annual Mother’s Day Sale.
It’s a one-week only store-wide
sale, and many customers stock
up and buy gifts for future occasions.
“We have wrapped many
items in holiday paper during
this sale,” said Franz with a
smile.
This year’s Mother’s Day
Sale is May 4-11.
