New campaign to help
Malibu Creek State Park
The Malibu Creek State Park’s GoFundMe campaign will
help them rebuild the signs burned during the Woolsey
Fire. Photos Submitted
Burned trail entrance signs that welcome visitors,
damaged by the Woolsey Fire.
The Woolsey Fire in November
left a trail of widespread
devastation all over
the city, and the Malibu
Creek State Park was not
immune to it.
Many of the trail signs
and information displays
were damaged and while
nature is recovering, the
Malibu Creek Docents
have organized a fundraising
campaign to help with
the park’s recovery.
Considered the recreational
crown jewel of the
Santa Monica Mountains,
the Malibu Creek State Park
has more than 8,200 acres
of pristine open space visited
by more than 300,000
visitors annually from the
surrounding area, as well as
from across the country and
around the world.
The park offers jagged
peaks, canyon vistas,
mountain slopes of dense
chaparral and aromatic
sage, cool riparian woodlands,
grassy savannahs
dotted with oak trees, exposures
of volcanic rock surrounding
a captivating pool
of water for outdoor enthusiasts
and families.
When visitors come to
Malibu Creek State Park,
they are greeted by information
display panels and
trail signs to help navigate
the trails and provide useful
information during their
visit. The campaign aims
to install 20 new trail signs
that cost $50 each, and 10
display panels for $900.
The Malibu Creek Docents
Association is a nonprofit,
all-volunteer organization
whose mission is to
enhance the public’s experience
in the park.
“The State Parks staff
are busy with removal of
the debris and rebuilding of
the damaged infrastructure,
so our volunteer docent organization
has organized
a GoFundMe campaign to
replace and/or install new
trail signage throughout
the Park to make it easier
for our visitors to navigate
around the Park,” said Sasan
Sheibani, volunteer for
Malibu Creek Docents Association.
“We also plan to install
information panels at key
locations in the Park to capture
some of its rich human
and film history and make
our visitors’ experience
much richer as they hike
around the Park.”
