In Memoriam
Dick Dale
On December 8, 2018,
Malibu’s Casa Escobar
hosted a one-of-a-kind, outstanding
concert by the legendary
Dick Dale, the King
of Surf Guitar, whose famous,
seminal song, “Misirlou,”
first issued in 1962,
was featured in Quentin
Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction in
1994, and rocked the house
at that Malibu concert. The
event proved to be one of
Dale’s last concerts. Dale,
81, passed away at Loma
Linda Hospital on March
16.
Billy Scott Wilson,
whose band opened for
Dale in 2013, shared anecdotes
about him.
“Dick told me about
teaching Jimi Hendrix how
to play a song,” Wilson
said. “He told me about
how he was influenced by
Gene Krupa.”
What the Beatles did
for rock and roll, Dale did
for surf music. His iconic,
incessant, surging guitar
playing brought in a whole
new genre. Many also refer
to him as the father of metal
music.
Wilson recounted how
Dale told him that often,
when he “looked down at
his guitar strings, they were
changing colors from the
heat caused by him letting
it fly.”
He said Dale “pushed the
limits of sound.”
Dale was the “precursor
to the Beach Boys and the
Safaris,” Wilson said. “He
was a legacy like no other.”
Before he passed away,
countless accolades were
conferred on Dale, including
the prestigious Musical
Instrument Museum installing
a permanent exhibit of
his instruments and memorabilia
in its Artist Gallery.
The MIM’s website recounts
Dale’s influence on
modern music in America,
noting that he collaborated
with Fender Guitars Corporation
to produce custommade
amplifiers, including
the first-ever 100-watt guitar
amplifier.
