TRAVEL
FLOWERS BLOOM IN BAGUIO CITY:
THE MAGIC OF
PINE CITY
by LORD HARVEY MONTEROSO
T
he great thing about travelling is the sense of escape. For that amount of
time you sit on a car, van, bus, plane, or boat, the world opens up to you.
In my case, I sat on a van with 11 other strangers going to the farthest I’ve
been to Luzon — Baguio City.
For me, travelling makes me feel nostalgic and liberated. The first time I’ve
heard of Baguio, aside from learning about it in school, was from my mom.
She was in the army, so the City of Pines was somewhere she frequented. As
a soldier, she got reassigned to other infantry divisions. This gave her a lot of
friends and a more clearer view of life. How cool can it be to be anyone you
can be and anywhere you want to be?
Her stories about the city amazed me—cold enough to wear sweaters even in
the morning and to see your breath turn white right before you eyes. As a kid
who didn’t get to go out much, knowing about Baguio sparked a desire to see
it and more of my country. Although it took me 26 years to get there, at least
I made it.
Baguio City is everything I imagined it would be. The moment I stepped out of
the van, the chill hit my exposed areas like a five-wheeler truck. And I loved it.
It was 4 in the morning, so the whole city was this huge fridge. And as a firsttime
tourist, I spared no time. I took a day tour so that was the only free time I
got before the Panagbenga parade started. With my hoodie, scarf, and camera
in tow, I ventured the unknown. Cold climate, whomst?
Sea of People
Even the crowd that gathered at Session Road was very chill. Maybe that
article I’ve read about people living in places with colder climates were less
temperamental than those who lived in warmer climates was actually true.
I wasn’t able to finish the whole parade, however, what I saw was enough to
satisfy me. The way the people cheered and laughed was contagious. The
smiles the performers gave when they swayed and danced were things I won’t
forget.
They were mostly kids, maybe in high school. Having experienced field demos
back in elementary, I definitely knew how tiring practices were. That was the
culmination of their sweat and tears. More than ever, how the Panagbenga
Grand Float Parade became successful was partly because of their efforts.
The Parade of Flowers
Unlike other tours, the main attraction came first. As early as 5AM, people
have already started herded into groups around the city. The Panagbenga
Grand Float Parade was one of the three parades I’ve actually been to. One
being from my hometown’s Higalaay Festival and the other being Bukidnon’s
Kaamulan Festival. Never had much experience with parades, but what made
Panagbenga special was that I felt more immersed. And the siksikan was
bearable because of the cold.
I was able to take some snaps before the parade started. The people were
actually quite friendly. Maybe it was the camera I was holding, or maybe
because they were naturally tourist-friendly. But they posed whenever I pointed
the lens at them.
Something Green at the City's Heart
Baguio City is undeniably Philippines’ summer capital. Aside from the mall
and occasional souvenir shop, a couple of decent parks strive among its
developing facade. In Baguio, it’s best of both worlds. You can grab a bite from
that fastfood chain, chill at a cafe, or party it our at some bar. You can also run
around or sit with friends on the grass among the flowers during anytime of the
day.
I kept hearing Burnham Park from conversations with friends. I also got to see
it on the news or from the setting of a telenovela. You have no idea about the
chills I got when I walked through the archway going inside the park. Maybe
because it was my first time or maybe I haven’t seen enough parks. The kid
inside me wanted to run around. I stopped myself because a) I was alone, b) the
park was packed with people, and c) the kid in me has outgrown himself.
Tales Among Keychains and Jams
Any tour won’t be complete without souvenirs. I managed to find
keychains and some jam. While buying, I got to ask a vendor about the
flock of people that come to the city. She didn’t mind the questions, and
she was up to sharing her time. A few people came listening in as she told
us about her life as a strawberry picker in Benguet to a strawberry jam
seller in Baguio City.
Local Swan Lake
Nevertheless, I was happy to know the lake was clean. And the swan
ride thingies were still a thing. I rode in one of those at Enchanted
Kingdom with a cousin. It was fun at the start but then our legs
cramped up after a almost an hour of pedalling on the water. I
smiled at the memory as I took some photos at the people seemingly
enjoying the ride.
Ate Mercy sells t-shirts and delectables now. Like her, people in the
region have grown accustomed to the yearly crowd. Proudly enough, she
has a suki from Metro Manila, who keeps visiting her stall 2 to 3 times
a year. Ate Mercy adapted to the times as any normal person would do.
She missed the old and simple times, but things have gone for the good.
Business is steady, but like all business, there would be times the sales
are stale. She shrugged and continued on with her life. I pondered at her
words while looking at the view. People should preserve nature because
people depend on it.
What amazed me most is that Burham Park rests in the middle of
the city. It’s this patch of green (well, that time I was there the grass
was brown, but you get the idea) right at the heart of a growing city.
Those who live in Baguio are so lucky to have it. Not many cities
maintain parks even for tourist attraction. All the more reason for me
to fall for Baguio’s appeal.
Short Getaway in Baguio
Culture Sells Like Hotcakes
If it sells, it’s good business. And Baguio sells its culture so well. It has
found its way to commercialize its history and diversity that its what
people come back for. Aside from the consistent sweater weather, of
course.
Take for example the parks at Mine’s View and Wright. Both
offer nature as their selling point. It’s a good way to make people
understand how important it is to preserve nature, environment and
economics-wise. The whole time I was there, I was at awe.
People have set up shop along the cliff as tourists gather at the edge
to see the view. One stall even offered rentals of tribal garb for photo
ops. People get their time off from metro life. Businessmen get paid.
It’s an ecosystem of nature and business. And it certainly works for
Baguio.
A few hours wasn’t enough to fully experience Panagbenga or even
Baguio itself. The festivities lasted for a month and the time I was there
was a dream. I would most likely would come back. And bring some
friends. Travelling is hard when you’re alone and if you want to get good
pictures of yourself. You need someone to take pictures of you, because
selfies aren’t enough!
The travel time going back to Manila felt shorter. Maybe because I slept
almost all the way through or was it because my mind finally got the rest it
deserved. If mom was still alive, I bet she’d be proud of me. I got to travel
alone again to a place I’ve never been. The stories she told me finally
became real. The cold still lingered on my neck like memories of her linger
in my mind. Baguio may be 200 kilometers from Quezon City and mom is
lightyears away, but I would still remember. Baguio turned out to be the
break I needed.
Mom said she was a different woman after Baguio. I felt different, too —
more energized and fresh. Maybe that’s the magic of the Pine City’s cold
air and warm embrace. Aside from the flowers and the tress, you bloom,
too. n
EXCLUSIVE: FIL-CANADIAN
ALEX SOLTES
AND HIS PATH TO GREATNESS
by ANGELA GRACE BALTAN
Good things come in small packages and
this young Filipino-Canadian is on his way
to greatness. Alexander Soltes, popularly
known as ‘Lil Savage’ recently won bronze
in Pan Kids held by International Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) in Los Angeles,
California.
FIL-CANADIAN ALEXANDER SOLTES
ALEX WINS BIG IN PAN KIDS 2019
Alex proudly stood on the platform with his bronze
medals at Pan Kids 2019. In an exclusive interview
with Village Pipol, Alex’s proud parents Jon and
Sabrina Soltes shared how much they adore him.
Sabrina shared, “As parents we felt tremendously
proud, he is such a hard working kid and to see
him up on the podium proud of the job he has done
melted our hearts.”
Meanwhile, Alex expressed how he felt.
“I felt all my hard work paid off and that I made my
Professor, Coaches and teammates very proud.”
ALEX TRAINS HARD
Sabrina detailed that Alex trains as much as
six days per week for jiu-jitsu. He, then, would
train for three days per week for strength and
conditioning. Aside from those, he would continue
to train year-round for all competitions that he
would join.
Since Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, there will be a
time that Alex could get hurt. The young athlete,
however, doesn’t worry about it and trust the
referees to keep him safe.
“I don’t really think about it. The referees are there
to make sure athletes don’t get hurt.”
Aside from jiu-jitsu, Alex would skateboard and
ride his bike outside. He also likes soccer and golf.
He also loves playing video games on his PS4.
WILL ALEX EVER REPRESENT
THE PHILIPPINES?
The young bronze medalist is a Filipino-Canadian.
Sabrina revealed that Alex could represent the
Philippines in an IBJJF tournament when he turns
sixteen. This could let him compete as an adult
where he represent both Philippines and Canada.
Alex has a lot of fans in the Philippines and shared
what he felt about them, “I feel good about that,
it is always nice to have lots of support especially
doing something I love to do.”
ALEX AND JULIA BONDS
OVER JIU-JITSU
Alex has a sister, Julia Soltes, and she now seemed
to be following the footsteps of her brother. She
attended her first official class at Academix
Martial Arts & Fitness which Alex is already a part
of.
Sabrina expressed, “This is the hope. We feel
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great way to keep our kids
active and healthy, we also feel it has benefits
which our children can apply throughout their lives.
It teaches discipline, focus, respect, work ethic as
well as determination and sportsmanship.”
Alex is also glad of Julia’s addition to the team of
kids.
“Julia has been helping me drill jiu jitsu at home for
a little bit now so I am glad she decided to join a
class. My Professor says because she is a gymnast
she will be a beast in Jiu jitsu, this makes me
happy.”
Alex and his family would also thank the people
who helped them: Jits Life Brand Canada,
Guardshop, Unko INK and Don Mega for the heat
patching on his GI and Ikiro for his GI.
UPDATE: Roll Chasers will be holding a Jiu-Jitsu
camp in November 2019 at Siargao, Philippines.
For more information, visit their Facebook at
www.facebook.com/rollchasersjjcamp.
Keep doing that good job, Alex! Filipinos are
already proud of you! n
SASSY SIPAG JELAY
Starting with the first official female teen
housemate introduced this season, Jillian
Pilones, famously known as Jelay, stuns
us with her height and might. You can
spot this 18-year old senior high school
student in local bars in General Santos City
performing up on stage. The gift of music
from her parents, who are also musicians,
for the audiences but also wows the crowd
with her impromptu beat box from time to
time.
Even though the situation pushed her to
earn for living at a very young age, Jelay
found out one thing in Big Brother’s house
in which she’s extremely grateful for—the
gift of courage to stand up despite failures
and doubts.
"Minsan na rin akong nawalan ng pag-asa
pero noong pumasok na po ako, naging
dahilan ko po ‘yung family ko [para]
lumaban.”
PASSION AND DEDICATION
In the vast field of showbiz, Jelay also
shared that opportunities for the young and
new are not limited compared to those who
already cemented a name in the industry.
She firmly believes that chances depend on
the person’s passion and dedication.
“May mga bata pong desidido para maabot
ang mga gusto nila sa buhay, At alam kong
magtatagumpay ako kahit sa tingin ng iba
ay bata pa ako.”
One of the best examples is the first-ever
Teen Big Winner Kim Chiu, who proved that
age doesn’t really matter in achieving one’s
goals and have an impact on others.
Jelay, in fact, is the first housemate to win
one of the coveted spots in the Big 4 by
winning the first Big Jump challenge. She
is truly a force to be reckoned with; there is
nothing more impressive than a young lady
who is determined to reach her goals.
POSITIVE AND DECISIVE KAORI
When asked about her edge among her
co-Big 4 housemates, Kaori professed that
she’s positive and doesn’t think twice, most
importantly on matters related to the tasks
given inside the yellow house. She lives
up to these credence by being the Kawaii
daughter we all aspire to be.
Her “longing for a father” story really
transpired in her stay inside the house.
From someone who was first rejected by
her own Japanese father, up to her quest
in Japan, where she reached to a point
where she needed to help her Filipina
mom to support their living, her vigor was
tested once again but now with millions of
Filipinos watching and loudly cheering for
her success.
As one of the eldest teen housemates
but without siblings to grow with, Kaori
adjusted and acted as the bigger sister to
the rest of the housemates. Her wisdom is
really admirable and everyone appreciates
her maturity in dealing with every
housemate.
“Natutunan ko po ‘yung halaga ng pamilya
doon po sa loob ng bahay ni Kuya. Dahil po
doon parang mas naging close po ako sa
pamilya ko,” she gladly shared.
A LOVE FOR HER FAMILY
Speaking of love for family, when asked
about the first three things she did right
after they leave Big Brother’s house, Kaori
made sure to check on her family in Japan
through video chat. Moreover, she revealed
that the all-female Big 4 also had a talk
about the things they can’t discuss inside
the house.
Kaori, despite of her sophisticated beauty,
is one simple girl who cherishes simple
things in life. She expressed her love for
street food in which she and other girls
craved for during their stay inside the
famous house.
“Kumain po kami ng street foods. Kwekkwek,
turon, hinahanap-hanap po talaga
namin sa loob ng bahay ‘yun eh,” Kaori
gladly mused.
On the other hand, Kaori shared the
one advice she received from former
housemates Maymay Entrata and Edward
Barber.
“Okay lang na mangarap ka [makapasok]
sa Big 4 o kaya maging Big Winner
pero importante rin ‘yung mga aral na
matututunan mo sa mga kapwa mo
housemate, mula sa mga stories nila, sa
wisdom nila.”
Kaori Oinuma is a warrior living in an
exquisite physique and we are ready for
greater heights she will surely conquer.
KARINA, A BATTLE QUEEN
“I am the queen of my own battles,” Karina
said with eyes full of fire making everyone
know that she isn’t someone to back
down anytime as she chases her dreams.
Proving she deserves to be in the spot of
Pinoy Big Brother Big 4, the hurricanes and
storms that she faced in her life just made
the fire inside her to burn even more. She
is determined to be part of the showbiz
industry and to stay there for long, of
course.
This young girl learned many things after
joining the reality show. Undeniably,
believing in herself is the most important
lesson she received from ‘Kuya’ because
she admitted that she is quite insecure. Like
any teenager, she was in this phase where
she feels she is not enough whether for
someone or something.
“I really learned to love myself and
cherish,”she firmly said. “There are still
lessons that life may taught us in the future
but for now let us learn to appreciate
ourselves.”
FRESH FACE'S DREAM
Being a fresh face from the glamour of
showbiz, she didn’t hesitate to say that she
dreamed of having a lead role in her own
teleserye. Her eyes even sparkled as she
mentions her idols, Enrique Gil and Liza
Soberano. As PBB her stepping stone in
entering show business, being real makes
eyes turn to her and soon it might be
opportunities too.
“Lagi ka namang madadapa but in the end,
it’s still in you, it’s your decision kung paano
ka tatayo,” she pronounced, you can feel
the determination burning in her heart as
she speaks these words.
As if you’re talking to an old soul, she
believes there is nothing easy in this world,
that’s why you need to work hard.
People who didn’t even know her have
thrown brickbats at her, but she still kept a
warm heart for them no matter what snide
remarks were thrown at her. The sixteenyear-old
believes that you will always make
mistakes but what matters the most is you
are learning and you are willing to correct
it.
Karina became the sun that lightens
through her burning determination to reach
her dreams. Yes, the journey to her goals
might bring pain and requires sacrifices but
in the end, she will succeed. She is a battle
queen after all.
STRONG WOMAN LIE
You’ll have this light feeling as you look at
her, when she smiles it radiates happiness
as if everything in this world is fine and as
you get to know more of her, her bubbly
personality sizzles the most.
Lie, is like a warm summer air. It’s calming,
comforting and that’s exactly what she is
like.
"'Yung pagiging matapang na harapin yung
mga hamon kahit na minsan akala mo di mo
kaya pero kaya mo pala."
Her words proved that being inside PBB
house isn’t what we usually see on our TV;
happy and fun, it is full of tasks, tough ones.
In truth, Lie discovered that she is a strong
woman and all you need to do is believe
in yourself. Enjoying the things inside PBB
house is the mantra she always lives up
to—making her journey more meaningful.
For her, it’s not only about winning but also
rather making new friends and enjoying the
opportunity.
Unsure of what career she’ll end up whether
a singer or an actress, she sure knows
that God is the only one who will tell what
might her future will turn out to be. If
given a chance, she wants a leading role
with Darren Espanto as her leading man,
because why not?
18 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

VALUE OF LOVING YOURSELF
Lie noted: “Love yourself before you love
others.”
This is probably one of the most important
things she learned during her stay in
Kuya’s house. Lie, who is popular for her
comic personality, shows the value of
loving yourself. She firmly believes that
appreciating ourselves, especially our
flaws, will make us happier. With her warm
heart that echoes a young, charming soul,
she will surely go places and leave marks
to people’s hearts—that makes her really
beautiful!
“Aaminin ko po na minsan, nasasaktan ako
sa mga natatanggap kong comments galing
sa kanila, lalo na sa mga social media. Pero
mas kilala ko kasi ang sarili ko, pati na rin
ang mga taong malapit sa 'kin, at ‘yun ang
mas mahalaga para sa 'kin.”
As her personality shined, there are times
it dimmed because of the hurtful things
some people say to her. She didn’t deny
that it actually hurts, but she keeps getting
stronger and learning not to mind those
people. She just shrugs it off, smiles
brightly and continues her steps towards
her dreams.
When asked what she will tell herself 10
years from now, “Tulungan mo sarili mo,
mahalin mo sarili mo, tulungan mo pamilya
mo at kung may pera ka na tulungan mo
yung iba.”
She’s a feisty young girl dreaming of all
the good things in this world because she
deserves it.
She is the warm breeze that touches you
and goes to your heart.
SPOTLIGHT
JANE
DE LEON
A Fierce Lioness
Just like the lioness which prowls on the sides as the lion spearheads an attack, Jane De Leon
comes up for the swipe. With grace and strength of the wild, she does what she knows best.
And there’s nothing we can do but stare as she strikes us with everything she has. There is truly
nothing more dangerous that a woman who knows her worth.
When a lion roars, the earth shakes and
the world listens. Its presence makes you
tremble, while its prowling eyes stun.
Its majestic mane moves through the wind,
and its teeth and paws make it so dangerously
beautiful. The lion isn’t the king of the jungle for
nothing. But as the saying goes: behind every
strong man is an even stronger woman who
supports him.
In a pride of lions, the females are both the
hunters and the caregivers. And that says a
lot. Female lions (or known as lionesses) are
much smaller in built compared to their male
counterparts, but are more agile and cunning
on the field. At their home turf, their tenderness
and sharp instincts make them the most
protective guardians. The lion may be the head
of the pride, but the lioness is the force that
protects and grows their family.
In the jungle that is show business, a lot of new
stars prance through their careers. However,
only the bravest and the toughest can pounce
their way to the top. Several women in the
industry have made their marks, but a new
breed of actors, singers, and dancers are slowly
paving their way, too.
JANE THE LIONESS
Jane Florence Benitez de Leon is one of
those rising stars. With her screen name
simply being Jane de Leon, it seems she’s
turning out to be a feisty lioness. Despite
her lithe frame, she certainly stands out.
The way she carries herself and how she
interacts with people clearly show how
self-aware and confident she is. In fact, this
petite powerhouse has both the charm and
the wit to win hearts in the industry. With
all the things going on in her young career,
she already knows exactly what she’s here
for.
“I just have to be ME. I believe my fans and
everyone who watch me deserve that. I’m
unique in my own way. Therefore, unique
in what I could give them as well. I have my
own fashion, my own style, and my own
acting skills — the most why I am here for.
I always give my best in everything I do,
and I am certainly open to learn more as I
go along,” she says as she opens up about
herself.
Among her family and peers, she is known
to be outspoken and kalog. Off-screen,
Jane is definitely bubbly. Her happy-golucky
aura makes you want to be her best
friend. She flips her hair so naturally that it
makes you think she invented hair-flipping.
And her eyes — oh those eyes. You’d
definitely melt.
“That is how I show off my true self. I just
want to laugh and be happy,” she exclaims,
reminiscing about her time with her loved
ones.
Nevertheless, she is loving, thoughtful, and
God-fearing. Most importantly, she values
her family — they are her inspiration to
continue on with her endeavors.
24 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

JANE AND THE LOVE FOR HER MOM
Like the lioness that stands behind her
pride, Jane de Leon stands by her family
no matter what. Her mom has always been
whom she looks up to. Her mom has always
been there for her and her older brother —
to give advice, guidance, and reminders.
Jane sees herself in her mom: she’s a fighter
andshe doesn’t give up that easily.
“My mom’s a very strong woman, who was
able to beat hardships both in life and in
health. She underwent four major surgeries
and went through tough times when my
dad was hospitalized up until he passed
away. I know being a single parent is hard
for her, but she manages to do it for me and
my kuya,”she says with glimmer in her eyes.
In all honesty, she knows that being in the
industry is not easy. It requires a lot of guts
and patience. The competition is so stiff
and standing out is not entirely easy. The
jungle is not for the faint of heart. It’s eat or
be eaten, fight or flight, predator or prey.
But for Jane? She makes it look like a walk
in the park.
TRAVEL• LIFESTYLE• ENTERTAINMENT
JANE THE ACTOR
Ready to pounce at any given moment,
Jane’s skills make her the perfect rising
star. Being a triple threat, she knows how
to sing, dance, and act. Fiercely enough,
she chooses acting as her forte. For her, she
finds it really challenging and life-changing.
“My first show as an actor was with
KathNiel. I can never forget that. It was
in the show ‘Be Careful With My Heart’.
I played the role of Margarita, Daniel
Padilla’s friend whom Kath Bernardo got
jealous of. That was definitely something
I always treasure because it opened more
opportunities for me. I would say, I’m just so
blessed to be where I am right now in this
journey,”she states — awe and disbelief still
lingering in her tone.
Currently, Jane can be seen in ABS–CBN’s
Primetime Bida: Halik. She plays the
character of Maggie Bartolome — Jericho
Rosales’ younger sister. She believes that
her character is someone most of her
female viewers can relate to. Maggie
depicts the simplicity and veracity of a
young woman but she can also be feisty if
needed. She is hardworking, spirited, and
aggressive, yet loving and protective of her
family. Just like Jane in real life, Maggie
fights at any given situation. She is very
independent and so sure of herself.
It is clear that Halik is doing well with the
ratings. However, what makes Jane excited
even more is that a lot of opportunities are
coming for her this year. One of which is a
gig for Ipaglaban Mo – her 2nd lead role –
for the Kapamilya network. She assures that
it will come out sometime this March.
26 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

JANE AND HER ANGELS
Moreover, Jane’s also been preparing a
little surprise for her fans, which she calls
her Angels, in social media. A lot more
vlogs and song covers aredefinitely on their
way.
“Afterall, I owe it all to my Angels for giving
me their love and support. I truly love them
all! Of course, above all things, I am so
grateful and thankful for all the blessings
that God has been giving me,” she explains.
Jane admittedly puts a more effort to be
visible online through her social media
accounts. Not because she wants to hoard
all sorts of attention, but because it’s easier
to engage with her fans. She knows how
important sharing her life is as a celebrity,
but to reach out to the people who put her
where she is, is what she revels.
“Celebrities would have to be active on
social media because it’s the platform
thatprovides us the opportunity to connect
with our fans here in the country and in
some parts of the world. When I’m online,
I’m try to be myself and enjoy. At the same
time, I’m careful as to what I post,” she
professes.
Talking about social media, on her Twitter
(@Imjanedeleon), she identifies herself
as Team Jesus, a Star Magic Artist, and a
Philophobe. With a gleam in her eyes, she
vivaciously explains why.
TRAVEL• LIFESTYLE• ENTERTAINMENT
www.villagepipol.com | 27

JANE IS TEAM JESUS
“Because I love Him,” she simply but wholeheartedly
states.
Jane is undeniably a faithful follower of Jesus
Christ. She was once an active youth member
of their church back in her hometown in San
Pedro, Laguna.
JANE OF STAR MAGIC
“I would like to showcase everything God gave
me — my talent and skills in acting, dancing,
and singing. Now, I can be a much better
person, and I can meet and deliver what is
expected of me by the people who trusts me in
this industry.”
Her dream when she was younger was to be an
artista. She couldn’t and still can’t explain how
thankful and happy she is now that the dream
finally came true.
28 | VILLAGE PIPOL MNP @villagepipol

JANE THE PHILOPHOBE
“There are so many things keeping me busy
these days. I just want to focus on what I’m
doing — my career, my family, and my goals in
life.”
Jane sheepishly says she has hesitations and
a fear of falling in love with the wrong person.
Even though she’s young, she knows it’s really
hard to trust anyone most especially within the
industry. Nothing against her peers, she just
isn’t rushing to be in love anytime soon.
Jane de Leon may still be a cub in this showbiz
pride, but her potential makes her a lioness
in every right. She still has a long way before
proving everyone else that her bite is stronger
than her roar. But in this jungle, she needs not
even roar for the attention; her most gentle of
purrs can make heads turn. Swift and able, her
skills and outlook in life make her a formidable
player.
Just like the lioness which prowls on the sides
as the lion spearheads an attack, Jane de
Leon comes up for the swipe. With grace and
strength of the wild, she does what she knows
best. And there’s nothing we can do but stare
as she strikes us with everything she has. There
is truly nothing more dangerous that a woman
who knows her worth.
Who needs Tarzan when you have Jane, right?
Jane de Leon is our fierce lioness. n
VP EXCLUSIVE
WHY SHOULD
DIA NICOLE MAGNO
WIN A BB. PILIPINAS 2019 CROWN?
very year, Bb. Pilipinas, the most prestigious
beauty pageant in the Philippines, showcases
Ethe diverse Filipina beauty. This 2019 edition, an
impressive line-up of equally beautiful candidates
was recently announced to the public. One of the
candidates who effortlessly stands out at the early
part of the competition is Binibini #39, Dia Nicole
Magno, a beauty from Butuan City.
Aside from her sophisticated looks, her admirable
character made her a striking force of this new batch
of Binibinis. She is eloquent and passionate, a woman
who knows what she wants, and of course, she
understands the current to reach it. There’s nothing
more dangerous than a woman who is dedicated to be
the ace of the play game.
Here’s the most interesting part: she was a nationals
athlete in badminton and represented the Philippines
at the 2011 SEA Games. With her competitive spirit
and the warm discipline she had gained in her prior
experiences as an athlete, there is no doubt that
she can steal any of these crowns: Miss Universe
Philippines, Bb. Pilipinas-International, Bb. Pilipinas-
Intercontinental, Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational, Bb.
Pilipinas-Globe and Bb. Pilipinas Grand International.
“My badminton stints helped me to become competitive
but with passion. I always put my feet on the ground
and I believe that would definitely help me in my Bb.
Pilipinas journey,” she shared.
Moreover, this 24-year-old beauty finished her
Interdisciplinary Studies degree at Ateneo de Manila
University. With her wide credentials in sports and
academe, Dia could easily catch attention as the
competition gets tougher.
A WOMAN WITH ADVOCACY
In her exclusive interview with Village
Pipol Magazine, Dia shared her biggest
challenge in joining Bb. Pilipinas 2019. In
fact, this has fueled her drive to pursue her
advocacy for women empowerment and
body positivity. She clearly wants to inspire
woman to be the better version of themselves
by encouraging them to put their heart in whatever
they do.
“My biggest challenge I had is also one of my
advocacies— it’s me losing my weight. I lost 65 pounds
and basically it all started for myself but eventually,
I had the idea of making it a way of inspiring others.
I’ll be the voice to the Filipino women that if you
want something, you can really achieve it if you
are compassionate and have a heart for it,” she
pronounced.
“I want to support women empowerment and body
positivity. Also, I want to teach my sport to young
Filipino children because I want to give them the
potential like what I had—how someone saw me
[playing badminton] in the province and eventually
had the opportunity to represent the country in the
international field. Above all, I want to help others
in lifting themselves away from poverty because
badminton has changed me with my education and
also with my life. So I’m sure and I hope it can also help
others too,” she added.
BB. PILIPINAS AS A
PERFECT PLATFORM
As a woman with purpose, she believes that joining
Bb. Pilipinas is a great platform for her advocacy. She
understands that this would help her to widen her
reach in campaigning her causes.
“It may sound cliche, my toughest rival is always
myself. I’ve done it with badminton, I would never
compete with other girls because everyone has its own
unique personality. Like in beauty pageants, beauty
is subjective. Just focus on yourself to be better,” she
explained.
OVERCOMING INSECURITIES
Just like any other girl, Dia also had her insecurities.
However, she encouraged other girls to overcome it
and embrace their unique beauty.
“No one’s perfect. We’re not perfect but we always
want to be a better version of ourselves. So I want
to say that you have to just do best of what you are.
I want to tell Filipino women that this is not just my
fight but it’s also everyone’s fight because if you have a
goal and achievements that you want people to know
about, put your heart on it. We are all beautiful,” she
emphasized.
This coming Bb. Pilipinas 2019 Coronation Night on
June 9, we will not be surprised if Dia snatch one of
the six crowns. She is indeed a beauty queen material!
No doubt! n
“Bb. Pilipinas is a prestigious beauty pageant.
Hopefully in God’s grace give me a crown, it’s a good
platform to be able to be heard and strengthen my
advocacy,” she said.
PREPARATIONS AND SUPPORT
Dia is from Kagandang Flores camp. She shared her
preparations and the aspects she needs to improve
before the finals night.
“I have a good camp, which is Kagandahang Flores
and because of them, it boost my confidence from
walking, to how I speak, how I relate with others and
also basically for my weight and my training,” she
shared.
“Also, I appreciate the love and support I am receiving
from my family, friends and from the people of Butuan.
Their words of encouragement made me decide on
joining [Bb. Pilipinas] and pursuing my dream of
helping others,” she continued.
HERSELF AS HER TOUGHEST
COMPETITOR
Dia with firm tone, revealed that she considered
herself as her toughest competitor in this battle.
