Girls lacrosse
New Trier wins easily in cancer awareness game
Gary Larsen
Freelance Reporter
New Trier senior lacrosse
player Lucy Murray
put it best in describing
the extra effort put
forth by her team during
this year’s annual cancer
awareness game against
Glenbrook South.
“We played hard and
fought, just like every person
who has cancer does
every day,” Murray said.
“We have a couple girls
on the team whose moms
had breast cancer and we
all came together and rallied
around the cause.”
The different colors
connected to various types
of cancer were on full
display at this year’s 8th
annual cancer awareness
game, played at Glenbrook
South on Thursday,
April 12.
New Trier wore pink
jerseys for breast cancer,
Glenbrook South wore
purple jerseys for leukemia
and lymphoma, and both
teams wore gold shoelaces
for childhood cancer.
Players, former players,
mothers of players, and
coaches from both teams
have all been affected
by some form of the disease.
When asked about
his girls’ play on the field
during a 19-6 New Trier
win, Trevians coach Pete
Collins wanted to first
talk about the importance
of the annual game.
“We were playing for
a bigger cause tonight,”
Collins said. “We raised
money for breast cancer
and we wore yellow shoelaces
for children’s cancer.
We had a bake sale today
and we got pledges for today’s
game. The goal was
to raise a couple thousand
dollars but we won’t find
out until tomorrow how
much we raised.”
New Trier (6-0-1) broke
fast from the gate in Glenview,
playing aggressive
lacrosse from front to
back and jumping out to
a 6-1 lead over Glenbrook
South (7-2-0).
With the Trevians’ Lydia
Kaup vocally directing
traffic in leading the defense,
Glenbrook South’s
attack struggled to find an
answer as New Trier’s offense
shined.
“Usually we are a very
good freelancing team,
not running set plays in
order to score,” Titans
coach Annie Lesch said.
“But New Trier gave us a
couple different defenses
so we had to adjust and
think at game speed, and I
think that was challenging
for us.”
New Trier never let up
in building a 13-3 halftime
lead.
“It was awesome. We’ve
been preparing for this
game because every time
we play GBS we know
it’s a competitive game,”
Murray said. “They’re a
good team and they come
out here and compete. But
we also know that we’ve
got to live up to our New
Trier name. So we’ve
been preparing for this in
practice all week.”
New Trier finished with
four goals apiece from
Charley Meier and Olivia
Zaban, and three apiece
from Murray and Claudia
Shevitz, who also had two
assists.
“Lucy Murray and
Claudia Shevitz are both
explosive players, whether
in midfield or running
the offense,” Collins said.
“Those two did a nice job.
“We also had a lot of
kids take of the draw today,
which was nice. Katie
Bush, Macy Zaban,
and Ella Huber all did a
really nice job.”
Thursday’s loss aside,
Glenbrook South is having
a fine season in 2019.
Belle Tiesi scored three
goals against New Trier,
Greer Bireley scored two,
and Lila Frick scored one.
“On attack, Meg Bireley,
Greer Bireley, and
Belle Tiesi have all been
really stepping up,” Lesch
said. “On defense, Mary
Grace Reynolds, Kate
Brennan, and Jasmine
Marval have been doing a
really nice job.
“New Trier plays a really
tenacious defense
so even when we tried to
slow the ball down, and
have a longer possession
on attack, they came out
and gave us pressure. So
they don’t ever let you
rest.”
