Orland School D135 Board of Education
Superintendent quitting in June but still on leave
Bill Jones, Editor
The Orland
School
District 135
Board of
Education
this week
accepted the
resignation DJ Skogsberg
of Superintendent
DJ Skogsberg, but
it does not take effect until
June 30, and he remains on
leave for unspecified reasons
and for an undetermined
length of time.
D135 School Board
President Laura Berry notified
parents of the resignation
in a letter that appears
to have been written the
evening of board’s April
8 regular meeting but sent
the next day by D135’s director
of communications,
Jen Obright. The School
Board voted 6-0 to accept
the resignation, with outgoing
Board Member Angie
Sexton absent.
In the letter, Berry noted
Assistant Superintendent
John Bryk, who has assumed
the duties of the
superintendent since Skogsberg’s
leave took effect
March 12, “will continue
to assume the duties and
responsibilities of the superintendent.”
Bryk said by email
Thursday, April 11, that
the district received notice
of Skogsberg’s resignation
the day of the board meeting,
and the reason provided
was “personal.” He
also confirmed Skogsberg
remained on leave.
The leave Skogsberg is
on was originally called
“unexpected” and for “undetermined
length of time”
when Berry originally announced
it in another letter
to parents.
Bryk, Obright and the
School Board have not
commented on whether
or not Skogsberg is getting
paid while on leave,
something not explicitly
addressed in his contract.
Bryk previously cited it as
a human resources issue in
declining to comment on
the salary.
“We don’t discuss employee
leave,” Bryk said at
that time.
Bryk said April 11 Skogsberg’s
resignation officially
terminates his superintendent
contract on
June 30, and he will not
be owed any type of severance
upon the departure.
Bryk also confirmed that
he is not receiving any additional
compensation to
fulfill Skogsberg’s duties
at this time.
Bryk added that Skogsberg
was not included by
name on the agenda for
the meeting because “at
the time the agenda was
posted, the district had not
received a letter of resignation
from the superintendent.”
The agenda had
named staff resignations,
as well as retirements and
notice of honorable dismissal,
and included “possible
action on employment
matters” following a
closed session.
Bryk said a superintendent
search has not been
initiated at this time.
Skogsberg, other administrators
and the D135
Board of Education have
come under the scrutiny
of the community they
serve in recent months,
after the board in February
approved changes to
its honors/enrichment programming,
among other
financial changes designed
to reduce a $2.5 million
annual deficit the district is
facing. Under pressure, the
School Board undid those
changes later in the month,
but budget problems and
conversations with the
community persist.
Skogsberg also is the
subject of a lawsuit filed
in March 2018 by teacher
Heather Conrad against
Orland School District
135, alleging sexual discrimination
on the part of
the superintendent. Conrad
said she was a denied
a promotion to principal
and removed from her position
as assistant principal
based on her sex, and in
retaliation for “rejecting
the unwanted advances” of
Skogsberg.
D135 formally answered
to the lawsuit in May 2018
by denying all of the key
allegations made by Conrad,
but the lawsuit reportedly
remains active.
Since the start of Skogsberg’s
leave, board
members have declined
to comment on it beyond
Berry’s letters. Skogsberg
could not be reached for
comment.
Orland Park Village Board
Officials examine spa regulation
options in wake of prostitution bust
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
After a recent prostitution
arrest at an Orland
Park massage therapy
business earlier this year,
the Village of Orland
Park’s Public Safety Committee
listened April 1 to a
possible code amendment,
designed to deter future
crimes from happening.
The code amendment
would require all future
massage businesses coming
into Orland Park to
provide at least one other
service that needs a professional
license issued by
the Illinois Department of
Financial & Professional
Regulation.
During the discussion,
Orland Park Police Chief
Tim McCarthy said that
over the past few years
there have been plenty of
stories involving human
trafficking.
“Over the past number
of years, we have seen the
same here in Orland Park,
where Asian women are
brought in and they are
used for prostitution in the
profession, so to speak,
of massage therapy,” he
said.
Orland Park police have
conducted four prostitution
stings at massage-only
businesses in the Village
over the past five years and
made 10 arrests. In Orland
Park, 23 businesses offer
massage therapy services
— 11 of which are massage
therapy only.
“It only happens in locations
that have massage
therapy only — and
no other specialty that is
regulated by the Illinois
Department of Professional
Regulation,” Mc-
Carthy said. “We had
one report here where the
Asian woman we arrested
had only been in the country
about two weeks prior
to our arrest, so it is obvious
what is going on here
that these women are being
brought here and used
for.”
The code amendment
would not affect businesses
currently in operation in
the Village.
Trustee Michael Carroll
wondered if there was a
less intrusive way of handling
the issue than potentially
denying massage
therapy-only businesses
moving forward. He asked
if there was a way to have
these businesses submit
State licensing identification
numbers at regular
intervals, or if requiring
more licenses from those
professionals who work at
Round It Up
A brief recap of action and discussion from the
April 1 Orland Park Village Board meeting
• During its meeting April 1, the Village Board
voted unanimously to approve the Orland Ridge
development as part of the Consent Agenda. The
mixed use development calls for 104 attached
dwelling units, 190 attached townhome units, a
clubhouse, a concept plan for a hotel, and retail
and commercial space.
• The Village Board also voted unanimously to
approve an agreement with AT&T to install small
cell technology within the Village’s rights of way.
The initial term is for five years with two additional
five-year renewals. AT&T will pay the Village $200
annually in rent.
• The Village Board also approved another
agreement with AT&T to install a small cell
application at the parking garage at the UChicago
Medicine - Orland Park. The initial term is for five
years with two additional five-year renewals, and
AT&T will pay the Village $270 annually in rent.
those businesses could be
solutions.
“It seems to me like we
are potentially going to
turn away some businesses
that are reputable in order
to attack the ones that are
not,” he said.
What a Lady
Publisher 22CM’s
expo brings women
together for fun,
inspiration
Will O’Brien
Freelance Reporter
Every year, 22nd Century
Media aims to make its
Lady - A Women’s Expo
event bigger and better.
And this spring’s Lady
is both of those things —
10,000-square-feet of exposition
space has been
added; more than 127 vendors
have reserved booths;
and organizers are expecting
record attendance. All
of the food, fashion, fitness
and lifestyle fun attendees
have come to expect will
be there, too, in ample
measure from 9 a.m.-1
p.m. Saturday, April 27, at
the Tinley Park Convention
Center, 18451 Convention
Center Drive.
But Heather Warthen,
the publishing company’s
chief events officer, also
set out with another aim
this time around: female
empowerment.
That is why, in addition
to cooking demonstrations
and fitness instruction, the
expo’s stages are to host
several notable, inspiring
speakers.
“I really wanted to make
it my goal this year to include
some great, inspiring
messages for women,”
Warthen said. “And we
wound up with a fantastic
group.”
The speakers will include
Rachel McCurdy,
who will discuss the success
of The Talking Shirt,
her Frankfort boutique,
and its recent distribution
deal with Von Maur
department stores. Tracy
Sweet fundraiser at Dunkin’
benefits Orland Jr. High School
THANK YOU FOR VOTING US
BEST SENIOR LIVING FOR
THREE YEARS IN A ROW!!!
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Blue and gold accented
the walls, ceiling and
even the doughnuts during
Orland Jr. High Day
at Dunkin’ and Baskin-
Robbins.
The April 10 fundraiser
found the coffee company
and ice cream shop
at 11309 W. 143rd St.
donating a percentage of
the day’s proceeds to the
school to support the continued
efforts of Orland
School District 135’s Parents
for Education. Visits
from the school’s mascot
only added to the fun.
“Fifteen percent of the
total sales from all day today
goes back to Orland Jr.
High,” PFE volunteer Angela
Boll said. “Dunkin’
decorated the store in our
school colors. They decorated
doughnuts in blue
and gold, and they are also
decorating an ice cream
cake with our school mascot
that is going to be raffled
off.”
Everyone who tagged
Orland Jr. High in an instore
selfie on social media
or submitted a purchase
receipt at school had
a chance to win the ice
cream cake. Boll explained
that Sandburg High School
students also were encouraged
to participate in the
fundraiser and enter to win
the raffle.
“Sandburg’s principal,
Jen Tyrrell, tweeted it out
to all their students because
on Wednesday there’s late
start for Sandburg, so a
lot of students — many
of whom are graduates of
Orland Jr. High — go to
Dunkin’,” Boll said.
Orland Jr. High School
seventh-grader Matt Boll
April 10 in support of his
school. Laurie Fanelli/22nd
com
PFE President Andrea
Joy added that Tyrrell had
been “so supportive” toward
the event.
Dunkin’ Store Manager
Rosa Gaona said she enjoyed
partnering with the
D135 PFE for the fundraiser.
“It’s very important for
us to help the community,
and it’s fun,” Gaona said.
“People get to see how
we treat our customers.
They’re always welcome
here to come and purchase
whatever they like: ice
cream, doughnuts, coffee.
It’s a great opportunity for
us to get recognized, and
if they like the service,
they’ll come back.”
She added that the Orland
Jr. High doughnuts
and coffee were among the
day’s best-selling menu
items.
Matthew Greenfield, a
fifth-grader at High Point
School, enjoyed an Eagles
Long John in the afternoon.
“It was good,” Greenfield
said, noting that he is
looking forward to attending
Orland Jr. High next
year because, “You get to
have a locker and switch
classes.”
The PFE is a group of
D135 parents who volunteer
to work with teachers,
administrators and staff to
raise money to provide additional
educational experiences
for students.
Boll explained, “This
past year alone, we were
able to purchase Eagles
T-shirts for every student,
in addition to sponsoring
two assemblies for Orland
Jr. High. We have regular
meetings. We plan activities.
We share ideas, and
it’s very helpful, because
we provide a lot of activities
and items that otherwise
aren’t available to our
students.”
Money raised from the
Dunkin’ fundraiser will
go toward the 2019-2020
school year. Boll and Joy
said that T-shirts for the
student body — which
were a big hit with students
in staff this year — as
well as to-be-determined
wishlist items from staff
are among the programs to
be supported by the funds.
PFE members are working
on a staff appreciation
luncheon scheduled for
May.
Boll said, “It’s an endof-the-year
‘thank you’ for
the OJH staff that does so
many wonderful things for
our students.”
“Most people have no idea that pure hemp extract, like Hemp
Gummies, can be purchased. And that’s because it contains no THC,”
explains Dr. Joe Wezensky, who sits on the scientific board atMedici
Quest.
“Instead, it’s bursting with special relief compounds called
cannabinoids. These cannabinoids target special receptor cites all over
the body but aremost prominent in the brain.”
“This system of cannabinoids and the receptorsthat theybind to are
called the Endocannabinoid System and science is just now unlocking
its amazing medical potential”
“In fact, the initial research has been so impressivethat hemp extract
is nowpatented by the US Government (patent #6,630,507).”
“It’s also being used by athletes in the NFL, MMA among other
physically demanding sports as asafe alternative.”
Clearing Up the Confusion Around Hemp
One of the biggest mistakes people make when talking about hemp
extract is mixing it up with marijuana.
Although the twofall under the same plant category, cannabis sativa,
theyhave completely different effects on the body.
Remarkably, hemp extract is available in the U.S. and can’t get you
high (ever!). That’s because there isnoTHC in it, the chemical that
makes youfeel “buzzed”.
“Although you can’t get high from Hemp Gummies, you can start
feeling the effectiverelief,” explains Wezensky.
“Most people have very low cannabinoid levels, which is why they
constantly ache. Hemp Gummies boosts cannabinoid levels extremely
fast, helping relieve lingering joint discomfort ...muscle tension...and
general soreness. Italso eases stress and elicits amazing relaxation
without feeling impaired. And what most people really love is they’re
delicious and so easytotakeonthe go.
HowitWorks
Clinical studies show that cannabinoids and the receptors that they
bind to arefound all overyour body.
However, they are most concentrated in your brain. That’s why it
has such aprofound impact on how you feel, especially your level of
comfort.
These cannabinoids and their receptorswork like“lock and key”and
bind to each other triggering important biological processes.
Hemp Extract, like Hemp Gummies,may
help users with...
•Aching joints
•Soremuscles
•Cramping
•Leg and foot discomfort
•Restlessness
•Stress
•Sleep problems
Keeps Your Body Balanced...
The incredible impact cannabinoids have on your health is directly
related to the primary goal of your Endocannabinoid System, which
is to maintain abalance in the body, aphysiological state known as
homeostasis.
Research shows that maintaining this balance is akey to vitality and
healthybodily function.
The cannabinoids found in Hemp Gummies, hemp extract, replenish
your levels quickly, easing discomfort overthe entirebody.
Plus, by keeping your body in balance (homeostasis), Hemp
Gummies also helps to relieve stress and tension...improve sleep... and
evenpromote relaxation and calmness.
pharmaceutical companies are currently testing hemp extract in
future. It’s advised to get Hemp Gummies while you can.
Taking All the Risk Off Consumers
Alarge percentage of men and women using Hemp Gummies
experience truly amazing results. That’s why it’s now being sold
with aguarantee that goes way beyond the industry standard.
“We can only make this guarantee because we are 100%
certain our customers will be satisfied,” says Wezensky. We
want to take full risk off consumers. So in addition to offering
substantial discounts for first time customers, we also makethem
Ultimately, the committee
members opted to vote
3-0 to forward the item
onto the Village Board
with no recommendation
to give staff time to look
at possible changes to the
ordinance that might incorporate
Carroll’s suggestions.
After the meeting, Mc-
Carthy expanded on the
possible code amendment.
He said human trafficking
investigations are
not handled at the local
level — it is referred to
the Department of Homeland
Security — and that
police receive complaints
or tips sometimes regarding
illegal activities at the
massage businesses. After
they investigate, and try
to get some background
on anyone arrested, they
sometimes find certain
identifiers that could
mean the arrested individual
was involved in trafficking
— including a language
barrier or how short
a time they have been in
the United States.
“It’s obvious what is going
on here, and they were
brought here for one reason
and one reason alone,”
McCarthy said of those
situations.
McCarthy said police
recognize that the person
arrested also may be a victim
in those cases.
He also said he thinks
by requiring the business
to offer more than one service
(and thus have to obtain
more licenses) could
serve as a deterrent for
these operations.
“It is not going to end
it, but again, it would
deter it,” he said. “And
the ones that are in business
now, we haven’t had
complaints. That’s just
fine. If we’re not getting
any complaints and not
hearing anything about it,
they must be a good business.”

Township High School
students volunteered their
time March 30 to teach
young students about science,
technology and engineering.
LTHS student and member
of PorterBots 4292
Chance Tyler said it was a
thrill to be teaching grade
school students.
“I’m here today to share
the knowledge of STEM,”
Tyler said. “I’m showing
kids about electricity,
making Play-Doh circuits
and showing them the robot
we built. I helped build
the arm mechanism. I’m
pursuing a career in robotics,
so this is great experience.”
This was the fifth year
for Chicago Southland
Makerfest, which was held
in Mokena. The Porterbots
4292 were one of 30 exhibitors
featured.
Leading the Lockport
Township students was
Jeff Brown, tech education
teacher and robotics club
sponsor at LTHS.
“We’re starting a class
next year at Lockport high
school in robotic engineering,”
Brown said. “Because
I teach engineering
[and computer-aided design],
my schedule is full,
so it will be someone else
teaching the class.
“Today, we brought
some small engineering
projects for the kids
to make. We brought our
competition robot we
made this year. The robot
is always named Lenny.
Every year, it’s a little
more challenging and a
little bit different. Lenny
[has a] 120-inch perimeter
and [is] about 3 feet high.
This year’s challenge was
plastic panels — putting
them on rocket ships.”
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Frankfort man reportedly
threatened at gunpoint in
robbery attempt
The Will County Sheriff’s
Office is seeking the
public’s help in identifying
two men who allegedly attempted
to rob a Frankfort
resident at gunpoint on
April 9.
A 21-year-old Frankfort
man contacted deputies at
around 4 p.m. April 9 to
report the incident, which
he said took place on a
walking trail roughly 150
yards from the intersection
of Thistle Lane and Arran
Drive, according to Will
County Sheriff’s Office
spokesperson Kathy Hoffmeyer.
The man said an unknown
male subject approached
him from behind
and asked him for money.
When the man denied the
request and continued
walking, the unknown man
became angry, pulled out a
black pistol, held the gun to
the victim’s forehead and
told him that he was going
to “blow his brains out,”
according to Hoffmeyer.
The man then slapped
the pistol away from the
offender, causing the gun
to fall onto the ground, and
the two men began a physical
altercation, Hoffmeyer
said. A second unknown
male subject then reportedly
arrived and began to
push the man off of the
alleged offender, who fled
on foot, while the second
subject reportedly entered
a teal-colored, two-door
sedan-type vehicle with
no rear license plate and
drove southbound on Arran
Drive.
The first alleged offender
was described as an 18- to
20-year-old man with tan
skin and brown hair, roughly
5-foot-8 and 170 pounds,
wearing brown gardening
gloves. The man described
the second subject as an
approximately 20-year-old
blond, white male.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Three-town partnership
would promote I-80
corridor
A three-village effort
aimed at jointly marketing
the Interstate 80 corridor
received verbal support
from Mokena officials
Monday, April 8, during
the work session that followed
the regularly scheduled
Village of Mokena
Board of Trustees meeting.
An actual vote on the
proposed intergovernmental
agreement between
Mokena, Tinley Park and
Orland Park is scheduled
for some point later this
month. The agreement is
related to the coordinated
marketing and attraction
of businesses to the I-80
corridor, and the Village
would contribute $10,000
from its Tourism Fund.
Mayor Frank Fleischer
brought up the item during
the work session, as he
and Trustee Debbie Engler
have been meeting with
Tinley Park and Orland
Park officials over the last
few months about the proposed
partnership.
According to Fleischer,
the idea would be to market
the whole corridor, not
just sections of it.
“We’re going to market
the whole corridor together,”
he said. “Any of the
information we put together
is going to be generic,
and it’s going to include
the whole corridor. It’s
not going to single out any
particular municipality. It
is going to include all three
municipalities.
“What has been really
nice about it since we’ve
been involved with them,
the other two communities
are big enough so that they
do a lot of this stuff inhouse
already. So, some of
the marketing that we’ve
done already has been
done in-house by those
two communities.”
event,” Warthen said.
This marks the sixth
edition of the expo, 22nd
Century Media’s longestrunning
and largest event.
Last year, 22CM held
both Lady and a scaleddown
Ladies Night Out,
which proved such a success
that the company is
holding four Ladies Night
Out events later this year
(June 13, Aug. 8, Oct. 3,
Dec. 5).
The concept seems to
have clicked with the
women of the southwest
suburbs, Warthen said.
“Especially if you’re a
mom, you don’t get that
night or that day out all
that often,” she said. “We
never dreamt it would get
this big.”
Last year’s Lady drew
more than 1,500 guests,
and Warthen said she expects
to surpass those figures
this year. The event,
she said, is purposely held
shortly before Mother’s
Day.
“You can get a jump on
Mother’s Day shopping,”
she said. “Or you can
bring your mom and just
have a nice day out with
the girls.”
Whether through shopping,
socializing or offering
new perspectives on
juggling life’s demands,
the event’s ultimate goal
remains the same, Warthen
said: bringing women together
for a fantastic day.
There is an expression
used to deflect
negativity that says,
“Everyone’s a critic.”
The idea is that everyone
loves to comment on what
someone else is doing,
and it’s a lot easier to
make those critiques than
the actual doing of those
things.
Except, not everyone
is a “good critic.” There
are reasons Roger Ebert’s
name stood above the rest
in the world of film criticism.
And it wasn’t just
the television exposure.
He had an unparalleled
knowledge of film he
could apply to his commentary.
His personality
was evident in the work.
And he actually had the
experience of trying to
make a film of his own,
offering him an insider’s
understanding of the
process.
I didn’t always agree
with his reviews, but I
remember many of them
well. And I find myself,
to this day, unable to
separate Ebert’s insights
on certain films from the
films themselves. That’s
more than I can say for
your buddy’s hot take on
“The Last Jedi.”
I’ve said in the past that
everyone’s an editor, too.
But similarly, not everyone
is equipped to be a
“good editor,” and there
are a lot of bad takes out
there on what we do. Here
are a few.
• I got a voicemail late
on a Thursday that I came
in to hear Friday morning.
(The most passionate
in their commentary
love to call after hours
or on weekends to leave
courageously anonymous
voicemails.)
This one demanded we
hire a better proofreader,
because our cover story
on the Sandburg Senior
Seminar made a grave error.
It featured an author
visit from a “very famous
author” by the name of
Harlan Coben, as per
this caller, and we must
be idiots to think his last
name was spelled Cohen.
This was, she said, inexcusable.
We make mistakes, and
it never feels great to have
them called out. At least
on our side. Some readers
take a sick pleasure in
trying to prove us wrong,
apparently secure in the
infallibility of their own
job performances.
Except, we did doublecheck
our information.
And we had a photo to
help verify. And it was
not “very famous author”
Harlan Coben, but
(strange as it may sound)
author and columnist Harlan
Cohen who spoke to
the students. And I would
have (politely, despite the
venom in her assertion) let
this caller know personally,
but she neglected to
leave a name or number.
So, I’ll do it here instead.
• Another common
thing we see are people
who do not pay close
attention to the paper
reaching out to tell us
we failed to report on
something we definitely
wrote about a few weeks
back. Generally, that’s just
fine. I usually don’t read
newspapers (beyond ones
I manage) cover to cover.
I skip through to articles
that hold an interest, and
I’m bound to miss some
stuff in between. I don’t
expect folks to have an
encyclopedic knowledge
of our product.
But a few months back,
I got a call from someone
suggesting we explain to
readers how roundabouts
work because of the one
Orland Park got at 147th
Street and Ravinia Avenue.
She called later and
left a message to scold me
for daring to ask readers
to share their feedback
with the paper if I’m not
going to listen to them.
She recounted her idea.
The very idea I acknowledged
as a good
one and dedicated a whole
column space and photo to
shortly after she suggested
it, giving her extra-credit
for a suggestion that
wasn’t completely selfserving.
So, now I’m dedicating
some more column
space to her.
• Finally, if you don’t
want to subscribe for
our Plus program online,
cool. I get it. Everyone
has to make choices with
their money, and I’m not
arrogant enough to think
we’re the most important
thing to each and every
one of you. Maybe you
don’t need it. Maybe you
think you have better options
elsewhere. So, you
don’t buy it. Fine.
Why so many of you
feel the need to complain
and comment on it,
though, is beyond me. Do
you also walk into stores
feeling the need to declare
what you’re not going to
buy and tell employees
there it should be free?
A few of you, maybe,
but I’m going to guess
in general the answer to
that is no. More of you
are probably the type who
loudly declare in a movie
theater which trailers do
it for you and which ones
you’re definitely not going
to see. (No one cares).
And I get that news
readers have been conditioned,
in the age of
the internet, to expect
free content. But while
everyone thinks they’re
an editor, it’s a bit harder
to actually do the job than
you think. And it often
costs money to do good
journalism. Those who
do it well take the time
to learn about reporting,
work to acquire experience
in the business, come
to it with a particular
personality, and have an
ability to drop the type of
biases and personal interests
that drive most of the
comments we receive.
The results will never
be perfect. A particular
story might not be for you.
But so far this season,
your commentary track
on our work is flawed, at
best. I give it two thumbs
down.
Creativity, good company
combine at library’s event
with Art Connections
STARRING
MARC MARTEL
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Every week, the women
of Art Connections meet in
Orland Park to create new
works of art. As each artist
works in a personal style
and preferred medium,
members chitchat and encourage
each other to push
their creativity.
Throughout April, patrons
of the Orland Park
Public Library have the
opportunity to view the
works of Art Connections
hanging on the walls of
the second floor. And on
April 5, members of the
creative collective were on
hand during the monthly
Meet the Artist event to
explain their influences,
techniques and the many
ways working in a group
benefits each individual.
Corrie Huisman Tameling
first got the idea to start
the group a few years ago,
when she moved to Orland
Park and created an art studio
in her home.
“It started out with
friends, and now I feel
like I have seven sisters,”
Huisman Tameling said.
“I just love each and every
woman there. They’ve
enriched my life. There’s
a connection between
us, and I think we’ve all
grown close.”
Along with Huisman
Tameling — who paints
spiritual landscapes — the
group includes Stephanie
Bieniek, Susan Flanagan,
Liz Morton Hernandez,
Vianne Korhorn, Annette
Plettau, Nabeela Rehman
and Carole Wilson. The
artists have diverse backgrounds,
representing different
religions, political
views and artistic leanings,
all of which are a rich
source of inspiration.
“There’s such a respect
for our differences,”
Huisman Tameling said.
Orland Park Theatre Troupe to present
‘High School Musical’ April 26-28
Submitted by Village of
Orland Park
The 2006 Disney film
favorite, “High School
Musical,” is coming to the
Orland Park stage.
The Orland Park Theatre
Troupe is to perform
the show April 26-28 at
the Sandburg High School
Performing Arts Center.
Patricia Domico, of Orland
Park, is one of the two
adults in the show and portrays
Ms. Darbus, the high
school drama teacher.
Kaitlyn Samawi, of Orland
“Sometimes, we talk about
politics and it’s OK. That’s
neat. There’s a genuine
safety there, with the differences.
You don’t have
to be afraid to express
what you feel. It may be
different, but there’s a respect
and a warmth and I
think a lot of love.”
Flanagan, a “split-personality
artist” who creates
both representational
and experimental works,
added, “We’re very different,
even in our expression
of art from photo realism
to abstract non-representational.
From a technical
standpoint, we share what
Annual Military Expo puts history, support on display
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
History buffs, families,
veterans and more were
invited to the Orland Park
Civic Center to enjoy a
day of good fun for a good
cause during the Orland
Park Veterans’ Commission’s
annual Military
Expo.
The collectibles show
and sale — held on April 7
— offered the opportunity
to view and purchase historic
military memorabilia.
The Will County Railroad
Club, Animal Quest Petting
Zoo and Frankie the Dinosaur
provided added entertainment,
while Kruse’s
Krew, Mrs. Jacky’s Soldiers
and Twisted Sisters
collected items and “thank
you” cards to send to United
States troops overseas.
Proceeds raised from the
expo go toward the Veterans’
Commission’s ongoing
mission to support veterans
and members of the
military with programs and
events. Orland Park Veterans’
Commission Chairman
Darryl Wertheim explained
that, with the expo,
the group aims to raise
awareness for veterans initiatives
while providing a
day of family fun.
“It’s a patriotic event,”
Wertheim said. “Our hope
is to bring families and
children out to have some
fun and to understand about
veterans and the service
groups that are here. We
have military collectible
dealers here, and we also
have support groups for
veterans. The object is to
bring interest, and people
may want to join the groups
and participate. That’s what
it’s all about.”
Army veteran Phil Stebbins,
of Elwood, was on
hand with a variety of
American, German and
Orland Park resident Ben Martin shows off two of his
best finds of the day at the Military Expo.
Japanese collectibles from
World War I and World
War II, including a bust of
aviator Charles Lindbergh,
which he recently acquired.
He explained that he has
had an interest in military
memorabilia since he was
a child.
“When I was about 12,
a good friend I met was a
World War II vet. He gave
me a German flag and
some German medals, and
that’s what got me interested,”
Stebbins said.
Expo attendee Ben Martin,
13, of Orland Park,
developed an interest in
historic military items
three years ago, after seeing
videos online of “really
cool stuff.” He added to his
growing collection at the
expo by purchasing a few
World War II-era items.
“So, this is a peanut butter
ration,” Martin said
while holding his newly
purchased collectibles. “It’s
probably, when you open it,
going to be very oily, because
it’s so old. And this is
a B-1 unit for coffee, sugar,
milk, cocoa and jam.”
Several groups — including
the Orland Park
Emergency Services and
Disaster Agency, which
was promoting preparedness
as well as recruiting
volunteers — lined the
halls of the Orland Park
Civic Center and provided
information to the community
during the expo.
Tina Wyatt, of
HomeSmart Realty Group
in Orland Park, spread the
word about Homes for Heroes,
which provides easy
ways for members of the
military, firefighters, law
enforcement, healthcare
providers and teachers to
receive monetary rewards
when buying or selling a
home.
“A large part of my commission
goes to Homes
for Heroes,” Wyatt said.
“I do this because I raised
a child. He’s a fantastic
person now, and I feel like
I was able to do that because
of all the people who
helped me. When they say
‘it takes a village to raise a
At the Military Expo, (left to right) Therese and Tom Dubelbeis chat with VFW Post
child,’ it really did. I was a
single mom, and I looked
around at all of the people
who helped me raise him.
It was the police officers. It
was the firefighters. It was
the teachers, the healthcare
providers and the military,
which was the reason why
he felt safe at night.
“I want to thank these
heroes every day for what
they do. This is a way I can
combine my passion with
my profession, and bring it
all together and do something
that is giving back.”
Along with the Orland
Park Veterans’ Commission,
Wertheim also represented
Veterans Voices,
a local veterans support
group, at the expo. He encouraged
everyone to join
the organization at its upcoming
Veterans Information
event from 11:30 a.m.-
4:30 p.m. April 27 at Faith
United Methodist Church,
15101 S. 80th Ave.
“Our Keynote speaker is
Medal of Honor recipient,
Allen Lynch,” Wertheim
said. “The event has speakers
and groups that support
veterans in all sorts of
ways. We support veterans
in our community, county,
state and also in the nation.”
The Dish
Francesca’s Fortunato focuses on community, fresh flavors
Nuria Mathog
Contributing Editor
Francesca’s Fortunato
general manager Jenny
Yohe has seen Frankfort
grow and change over the
years — and watched her
restaurant make a home
for itself within the everevolving
community.
“We were still all cornfields
out here 13 years
ago,” she said. “I can remember
even then, going
down [Route] 30, and
there was nothing there.”
Today, the restaurant
at the corner of Oak and
Kansas streets is part of a
thriving downtown Frankfort.
Francesca’s Fortunato,
which opened in November
2004, is the 13th
addition to the Francesca’s
family of Italian restaurants,
which operates 22
locations throughout the
Chicago area.
Yohe, a Mokena resident,
has previously
worked at Francesca’s
locations in Chicago and
Naperville, and is glad to
finally be close to home.
“Frankfort has so much
to offer,” she said. “We
have the movies in the
park, everything, and the
restaurant’s in the center.
It’s just great, and I find it
so amazing. From nothing
being down here to everything
being down here —
it’s just wonderful.”
What sets Fortunato —
and the Francesca’s company
as a whole — apart
from the competition is the
freshness of the ingredients
used, Yohe said. Everything
at the restaurant
is made from scratch, all
the way down to the stock.
“If you ordered a dish
and said, ‘I don’t want this
and this in it, but can you
add this?’ we can do that,
The filetto con crema al Tartufo ($46) features an
8-ounce filet mignon from Creekstone Farms, a crab
and lobster cake, Bloomsdale spinach, and shaved
Umbrian black truffle fondue.
because we make everything
from scratch, and
it’s all fresh, and it’s all
top-notch product,” Yohe
said. “We do everything,
and that’s what makes our
flavor so good.”
Best-sellers at Francesca’s
Fortunato include
the pollo arrosto alla Romana
($18.95), a roasted
half-chicken cooked with
shallots, rosemary, garlic,
lemon and olive oil, served
with roasted potato, and
the filetto con crema al
8-ounce filet mignon from
Creekstone Farms, a crab
and lobster cake, Bloomsdale
spinach, and shaved
Umbrian black truffle fondue.
The restaurant also offers
a special menu through
the end of Lent, featuring a
variety of seafood dishes,
such as the fettuccine alla
Genovese ($24.95), which
features pasta sauteed with
a mixture of shrimp, scallops,
French green beans
and potato in a basil-pesto
sauce.
Francesca’s Fortunato
also carries a variety of
wines from smaller vineyards
and has its own signature
pinot grigio that can
be purchased for $8 a glass
Customers are always
Yohe added, explaining
that as long as the
special dishes.
few minutes longer, because
we have to pound
the chicken and do everything
for it, but we’ll make
it for you. We go out of our
way to cater to our guests
and whatever their needs
are.”
In addition to serving
high-quality Italian fare,
Francesca’s Fortunato
continually looks for ways
to bring the community
together. The restaurant
regularly offers cooking
classes that teach residents
how to create gnocchi and
pasta, in addition to hosting
special events, such as
the Witches & Warlocks
wine dinner, which invites
attendees to dress up in
their Halloween finest.
“We’re a community
store — at least, that’s
what we consider ourselves,”
Yohe said. “If you
ever come in here, everybody
knows everybody.
So, you can be walking
someone to their table, and
they’re stopping along the
way talking to 20 different
people. And it’s really
neat. ... On a Friday, Saturday
night at the bar, it’s
just one big, happy party.”

Novena
Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
Oh, most beautiful flower of
Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine,
splendor of Heaven, Blessed
Mother of the Son of God,
Immaculate Virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh, Star of
the Sea, help me and show me,
herein you are my mother. Oh,
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Queen of Heaven and Earth!
I humbly beseech you from
the bottom of my heart to succor
me in this necessity. There
are none that can withstand
your power. Oh show me
herein you are my mother. Oh
Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse
to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I
place this cause in your hands
(3x). Holy Spirit, you who
solve all problems, light of all
roads so that I can attain my
goal. You who gave me the divine
gift to forgive and forget
all evil against me and that in
all instances in my life you are
with me. I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all
things as you confirm once
again that I never want to be
separated from you in
Eternal Glory. Thank you for
your mercy toward me and
mine. The person must say this
prayer 3 consecutive days.
After 3 days, the request will
be granted. This prayer must
be published after the favor is
granted.
1037 Prayer /
Novena
A Novena Prayer to St. Jude
O holy St. Jude, apostle and
martyr, great in virtue, rich in
miracle, near kinsman to Jesus
Christ, faithful intercessor of
all who invoked your special
patronage in time of need. To
you I have recourse from the
depth of my heart, and humbly
beg great power to come to my
assistance. Help me in my present
and most urgent petition.
(Make Your Request)
In return I promise to make
your name known and cause
your name to be invoked. St.
Jude, pray for us and all who
invoked thy aid. Amen.
Pray this 9 times a day for 9
consecutive days. On the
eighth day your prayers will
be answered for this prayer
has never known to fail. Please
10 Questions
with Sarah Gonsch
Sarah Gonsch is a junior
softball player at Sandburg.
How did you get
involved in softball?
When I was younger, I
used to do gymnastics and
my aunt [Florie] told me I
should try to play softball.
I didn’t want to. But I did
it and I loved it.
Why did she want you
to play?
Everybody knew that I
wasn’t like a girly-girl so I
wasn’t into gymnastics or
dance.
Beating Marist in the
What is your college
I verbally committed to
Ball State. I play [travel
and in eighth grade,
I started going to college
tournaments. I went to a
camp, and they were actually
interested in me. I was
like ‘no way.’ I hope to
major in athletic training.
Do you have any
heroes you look up to?
My sister [Katie].
Do you have any
pump-up music before
My favorite artist is Post
Is there a movie you
would watch over and
over without getting
tired of it?
“High School Musical”
because I like the songs.
I’ve grown up watching
that. It’s always been my
favorite movie.
Is there a TV show
you could binge watch
forever?
“ S p o n g e b o b
with that, too.
If they made a movie
about your life, who
A comedian, because I
think I’m pretty funny.
VOLLEYBALL
Eagles retire number of late Downers Grove star
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Sandburg’s girls volleyball
team retired the number
of a player who never
had a serve, kill or block
for the Eagles.
She never wore an Eagles
uniform.
But the program retired
No. 18 in honor of Downers
Grove North’s Beth
Dunlap, who died in February
after being struck by
a car.
Her death caused shock
waves among volleyball
teams not only throughout
the Chicago area but the
state as well. Benefits have
started in her name. Putnam
County Junior High
School players in central
Illinois recently wore shirts
in her honor. In March, a
media group hosted an allstar
girls basketball game
in Joliet in which the game
started with the score of
18-18, rather than 0-0, in
her honor.
Sandburg retired her
number and members of
the girls volleyball team
gathered for a photo with
the retired jersey before
the boys team took on
Downers Grove North on
April 9. The Eagles presented
the jersey to DGN
coaches.
Dave Vales, who coaches
the Eagles boys and
girls teams, said the volleyball
teams raised more
than $500 for the Beth
Dunlap 18 Fund, which
will benefit underprivileged
volleyball players.
Earlier in the season,
Vales and the boys team
raised money for RE;ACT,
a group that helps first responders
dealing with depression,
and honored first
responders from the area.
Sandburg girls volleyball players gather around a
framed jersey for Beth Dunlap, a Downers Grove North
player who died in February. The Eagles retired the No.
18 in Dunlap’s honor. PHOTO SUBMITTED
Association president
Jason Zimmer said youth
sports organizations share
a bond over a common
goal of enriching children’s
life through sports.
So, when Zimmer heard
Belmont Little League in
Joliet had thousands of
dollars of equipment stolen
from its storage shed
with the new season right
around the corner, he
wanted to help.
He also knew the families
in his organization
- which has players from
Frankfort, New Lenox, Orland
Park and Tinley Park,
in addition to Mokena -
would be eager to pitch in.
“It’d be horrible it that
happened to us,” Zimmer
said. “One of our board
members sent me a text
message about what happened
to Belmont Little
League. I told them we’d
have a lot of equipment for
them to take.”
Coincidentally, MBSA
Belmont Little League board members Carlos
Carreno (left) and Dan Vestal filled a pickup truck with
equipment donated by the Mokena Baseball/Softball
Association. Photo submitted
Belmont theft occurred.
The league was collecting
equipment with the
intent of donating to Turn
and softball gear to
distribute to underprivileged
Energetic Hase is a player ‘who is everywhere’
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Spring soccer matches
in college do not count for
wins or losses.
Orland Park’s Kylie
Hase does not care.
She is playing soccer.
That is all that counts.
The Sandburg graduate
and Purdue University
sophomore said she is
having fun during a fivegame
exhibition season
that ends Friday, April 19,
with a game at Illinois in
Champaign.
“I love it,” she said.
“It’s fun to be around people
who are competitive
and love soccer as much
as I do.”
She views it as an important
time before entering
her junior year.
“We lost some seniors,
so we are using the spring
more to work to rebuild
the team, because we’re
a very young team,” she
said. “We’re trying to
work with the chemistry
and everything. I definitely
think we have a lot of
potential. It’s very exciting.”
The previous fall season
had its share of excitement
for Hase.
The Boilermakers finished
6-8-4 overall and
1-7-3 in the Big Ten Conference
and Hase finished
with a team-high eight
goals to win the team’s
Golden Boot.
Some of those goals
were memorable.
The second match of
the year, a home contest
called Pooches at the
Pitch on Aug. 26, Hase
scored the game-winning
goal with a header
with nine seconds left in
a 2-1 victory over Iowa
State.
That play was ranked
Whether at Purdue (left photo) or alma mater Sandburg (right), Kylie Hase always seems to be in the middle of the action.
LEFT PHOTO: COURTESY OF PURDUE ATHLETICS, RIGHT PHOTO: 22ND CENTURY MEDIA FILE PHOTO
fifth on ESPN SportsCenter
that night.
“I know the broadcaster
for our team, and he told
me he knew people at
ESPN,” she said. “He told
me the goal might be on
the Top 10. I was taken
aback and said there is no
way. Then I heard it really
was going to be on
and I contacted my mom
[Deb] right away. She was
speechless.
“It was something that I
have never been involved
with, and it was amazing.”
She saw it for the first
time the next morning,
watching it on a dorm
room TV with her roommates.
“It was just insane to
see myself,” she said. “I
never would have imagined
that it would have
ever happened to me.”
On Sept. 6, she scored
the first goal in a 2-1 win
over Louisville, which
was ranked 24th in the nation
in the United Soccer
Coaches poll. That was
the first time since 2009
the Boilermakers knocked
off a ranked team.
“I don’t really look to
score when I play,” Hase
said. “I play for my team
and what happens, happens.
It just turned out
that way. I’ll take what I
can get.”
As a freshman, she had
five goals and an assist
and scored a game-winning
goal in a 1-0 victory
over Michigan, which was
the first time a Boilermaker
freshman ever scored
a game-winner against a
Big Ten foe. It was also
the first home goal Michigan
allowed in 450 minutes.
She also scored a
pair or goals in a 2-0 victory
over Northwestern.
“She is the type of player
who is everywhere,”
Purdue coach Drew Roff
said after the NU match.
“She has a knack for coming
up with big goals. She
is something special.”
“I’ve always been an
energized player,” Hase
said. “My mom said that
it’s probably because I
played with boys growing
up. I’m not sure that’s
what it is, but I have always
been like that.’’
Hase started her soccer
career playing for the
Homer Hawks. When
coach Sena Halilovic invited
her to a Hawks try
out after watching her at
a skills camp, she did not
know it was going to be
on an all boys team. She
also played against boys
in baseball competition
for a little while until she
joined the Chicago Inter
Soccer Club and started
playing against other females
in junior high.
Hase is majoring in
law and society, and said
she hopes to be a lawyer
someday.
“I grew up in a political
house, and we talk about
a lot of social issues,” she
said. “I learned right from
wrong and always was for
the underdog. I just want
to see bad guys put away.”
For now, she is putting
away goals.
Her younger sister, Ella,
is a junior at Sandburg and
has verbally committed to
Northwestern. The two
never got to be teammates
at Sandburg, but Kylie is
hoping the two can be on
the same field in opposing
jerseys in 2020.
“Watching her is like
watching myself,” Kylie
said. “Her skills are amazing,
and I know how much
she loves the sport.”

AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP
Orland’s Ruzevich named NJCAA All-American
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Orland Park’s Julia Ruzevich’s
stay with the Moraine
Valley Community
College women’s basketball
team was brief, but
impactful.
The Marist graduate
helped lead the Cyclones
to just their third National
Junior College Athletic
Association national tournament
and was recently
named an NJCAA Division
II All-American.
The 6-foot-1 forward
averaged 17.8 points, 8.3
rebounds, 4.4 assists and
two steals per game while
shooting 43 percent overall
and 35 percent from beyond
the 3-point line.
The Cyclones finished
34-3 on the season, finished
eighth in the nation
and averaged 85.8 points
per game.
Ruzevich and her twin
sister, Kate, spent their
freshmen year at Division
II Quincy and transferred
to the Palos Hills school
for this season. They both
plan to play at Division II
Lindenwood next season.
Everything’s Jake
Sandburg graduate Jake
Ostema of Trinity Christian
College made a good
first impression as he was
named the Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference
men’s volleyball
Freshman of the Year.
The 6-foot-8 middle hitter
had a .297 attack percentage
and had 132 kills
this season. He added 67
blocks.
Taking a break
David Vales had 13 kills
and five blocks in Sandburg’s
22-25, 25-22, 25-20
victory over St. Rita on
April 10. Cameron Petrusevski
and Hunter Kelly
each had 16 assists to help
the Eagles improve to 11-
4. That preceded a 12-day
break as the Eagles return
to action Tuesday, April
23, with a SouthWest Suburban
Conference home
battle against Bolingbrook.
Quick hits
Senior Sandburg wrestler
Patrick Nolan won the
Ken Gerdes Leadership
Award from the Illinois
Wrestling Coaches and Officials
Association. Fellow
senior wrestler Nate Goodman
signed with the United
States Navy. Sandburg
baseball star Tommy Windt
had three hits and six RBI
and pitched the victory in
a 13-4 victory over Stagg
on Friday, April 12. Eagles
softball player Brianna
Dvorak hit two homers and
drove in four runs in an
11-9 win over Lyons Township
on Thursday, April
11. Andrew’s co-op boys
lacrosse team avenged an
early season loss with an
11-7 win at Dunlap, as Calvin
Greenan and Michael
Walsh had three goals each.
The Orland Park-based
Windy City Magic 17U
squad won a qualifier in
South Bend on April 7.
Orland Park’s Julia Ruzevich was named to the Division II NJCAA All-American team.
She played her college sophomore season at Moraine Valley Community College and
helped the Cyclones to an eighth-place finish in the nation.
Jeff Vorva
Sports Editor
On a foggy Saturday
morning a few
weeks ago, Orland
Park Village Clerk John
Mehalek woke up early
and headed to Challengers
Field in Tinley Park.
It was the first time he
had been at the facility.
Not only was he looking
at the recent past — Challengers
Field is five years
old now — he also hoped
he was looking into the
future, as well.
Challengers Field was
built to accommodate
special needs athletes from
all over the south suburbs
who want to play baseball
or softball. The Challengers
organization started
nearly 25 years ago and
many games were held at
a gravel-filled Tinley Park
Bobcats field.
So, Challengers Field
was built at Bettenhausen
Park and last year, 120
players on 10 teams called
it their home field.
A Tinley Park Eagle
Scout candidate, Franklin
Daviau, recently oversaw a
project with solar lights being
installed in the dugout.
That is where Mehalek
came in.
On April 6, he and a
group of co-workers from
the International Brotherhood
of Electrical Workers
installed the lights on a
morning that started out
foggy but eventually became
sunny and warm.
As the sun came out
and showed the field in a
better light, Mehalek was
impressed.
“It’s incredible; it really
is,” he said. “What a
wonderful place. It’s really
neat and it’s an opportunity
for us to partner with these
guys for a project like
this.”
Who knows? In a few
more years, perhaps Orland
Park will have a special
needs diamond of its
own and Mehalek and his
crew will help zap some
electricity or solar power
into that place, as well.
Marist High School
student and Orland Park
resident Zachary Stack is
heading up a group called
Baseball 4 All. The Village
of Orland Park donated
land near the John Humphrey
Complex and the
group is looking to raise
money to build this and
turn it into a reality.
Stack has picked up
some great publicity in
recent years, but things
seemed quiet lately.
I checked the website
and the last event that was
posted was a trivia night
event in the fall.
That got me a little
concerned. I crossed my
fingers that the project was
not being abandoned.
I was able to uncross
my fingers after contacting
Stack.
The website was not
updated because, well, he is
a high school student with a
lot on his plate, with school,
preparing for the ACT and
all that good stuff.
But he assured me the
project is “in full swing in
raising funds to build the
field.”
As a matter of fact, the
group will host two big
events in Orland Park on
May 4.
City Barbeque (14301 S.
LaGrange Road) will donate
10 percent of its sales
all day to the organization.
Starting at 3:30 p.m.,
the Square Celt (39 Orland
Square Drive) will host
a Kentucky Derby watch
party. For 50 bucks (cash
only), you can watch the
race, eat some light appetizers,
and drink beer,
wine, soda and cocktails.
The event is held through
the Orland Fire Protection
District, which named the
Baseball 4 All group its
beneficiary.
Orland Park Vilage Clerk John Mehalek, talking
to workers behind a solar panel to be installed at
Challengers Field in Tinley Park, is looking forward to
seeing two special needs baseball/softball diamonds in
the area. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Like the Tinley project,
it might take years before
we see the Orland diamond
shine.
Will the Orland field
take away some athletes
from the Tinley field?
Maybe. But that’s not the
issue here. The greater
good is that there are more,
not less, choices for special
needs athletes.
“We’re very excited
about that,” Mehalek said.
“The more we can do, the
better. “
And it’s not just for
children. This is for special
needs players of all ages.
There are adults who have
opportunities to play.’’
Going dancing
Please forgive my selfindulgence
to report that
Fontbonne University’s
men’s volleyball team,
Division III coaches’ poll,
stunned No. 1 Carthage
to win the Midwest Collegiate
Volleyball League
on Saturday, April 13. The
Griffins are in the 14-team
NCAA Tournament for the
first time in school history.
Sandburg grad T.J. Vorva
captains on the team.
He was on the 2015
