18 | April 18, 2019 | The winnetka Current SCHOOL winnetkacurrent.com Banner Preschool finds its footing at new Northfield space Megan Bernard, Editor After 40-plus years in Wilmette, Banner Preschool started a new chapter at Am Yisrael in Northfield. The recent move occurred after the preschool’s lease was not renewed at Beth Hillel, said current owner and executive director Alexandra Lipscomb, of Glenview. “It was kind of a big shocker because we were not ready for it,” Lipscomb said of the news in January 2018. “The major struggle was not being able to find a space right away. We were at every local Village’s office looking for somewhere for 110 students and 17 teachers.” Lipscomb said the following months were a whirlwind, but “I knew deep down we’d always find a space.” When Lipscomb and her friend Christine Perkins, who serves as the preschool’s director, connected with Nancy Holab Nevins, the executive director at Am Yisrael, everything clicked. “I still remember the day I called her,” Lipscomb said, laughing. “While there had not been a preschool there since 2001, there were still eight beautiful classrooms and a playground.” Within less than a month, Lipscomb had signed a lease at Am Yisrael, 4 North Happ Road (across from New Trier High School’s Northfield campus), beginning for summer 2018. Now closing in on its first year at the new school, it’s so far, so good, Lipscomb said. “It’s going flawless; it’s such a great partnership,” she said of Banner and Am Yisrael. “Everything fell into place. We kept about 90 percent of our families and the few that didn’t move with us had children moving up grades so it made sense.” Banner, a nature-focused preschool, focuses on the modern child and family. “What we hear most from parents is that there’s nothing else in the North Shore that looks like it,” Lipscomb said. “At Banner, we give the kids and families a better idea of where they are going later in life in the local school districts. We’re also focusing on the social and emotional aspect.” The concept of Banner did not change from its Wilmette roots, which date back to the 1970s when founder Adell Kabins started the school business. Kabins retired in 2015 and searched for someone to purchase and continue to run Banner. “I was going to open my own preschool with three classrooms when I moved here from the city,” Lipscomb said. “My son at the time was 4 and I needed a preschool for him. I didn’t have a ton of time to research, but I quickly found something was missing that was in the city. For a couple years, I was building my business proposal and then I got an email from a friend about Banner and how Adell was looking for a new owner. Photo Submitted “She needed someone to carry on her legacy of the school — one that looks like everyone other preschool, but explodes with love and warmth inside.” Looking forward, this is the second summer Banner will be occupying space at Am Yisrael and it will be the first year for its summer camp. School News Depaul University Northfield resident makes dean’s list Nicholas Zeddies, of Northfield, made the dean’s list for academic achievements during the 2019 winter quarter. Knox College Brooks makes dean’s list Shannon Brooks, of Winnetka, has been named to the Knox College dean’s list of distinguished students for the 2019 winter term. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must have earned at least 2.5 credits in the term, with a grade point average of 3.6 or better (on a 4.0 scale). Brooks is majoring in Spanish at Knox College and graduated from New Trier High School. The University of Alabama Winnetkan participates in undergrad research, creative activity conference Nearly 500 students at The University of Alabama highlighted their research and creative projects during the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference on March 27. Among them was Mac Hanslip, of Winnetka, whose presentation was titled “Effect of Personal Relationships on Banking Behavior” in the business category. The University of Vermont Winnetkan Rallython raise over $117K Eliza Parkinson, of Winnetka, along with 40 teams and over 700 participants, has helped the University of Vermont’s annual student-led fundraising event Rallython raise a record-breaking $117,520.29 for the UVM Children’s Hospital. Rallython is a student-led yearlong fundraiser which culminates in a 12-hour dance marathon, signifying the average length of a nurse’s shift at Vermont’s local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. During Rallython, which took place on Saturday, March 2, students heard stories from patient families treated at the UVM Children’s Hospital and engaged with champions — current and past patients of the hospital, while fundraising, participating in games and dancing until the final reveal their annual fundraising total. Colgate University Locals earn fall 2018 dean’s award Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher while completing at least three courses for a conventional letter grade during the fall 2018 semester earn the dean’s award with Distinction. Local award winners include: Annelouise Martin, Vivienne Sleigh, Jacob Freedman, Andrew Huber and Olivia O’Bryan, all of Winnetka. University of San Diego Winnetka resident earns first honors University of San Diego student Thomas Wellington, of Winnetka, earned first honors in the fall semester of 2018. Colby College Resident makes dean’s list Ezekiel B. Edwards- Mizel, of Winnetka, was recently named to the highly selective dean’s list at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for outstanding academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2018-19 academic year. Edwards-Mizel is one of 538 Colby students — or 26 percent of the qualified student body — to qualify for the dean’s list last semester. Winnetkan returns from first-semester global experience Kathleen F. Burton, of Winnetka, a first-year student at Colby College, recently returned from spending the fall semester in Salamanca, Spain, through a special program that offers first-year students the opportunity to study abroad. Burton, a graduate of New Trier, is the daughter of James Burton and Anne Murphy, of Winnetka. Rochester Institute of Technology Dean’s list honoree Lauren Rohland, of Winnetka, was named to the dean’s list at Rochester Institute of Technology for the 2018 fall semester.
