‘Freak accident’ kills woman
outside Stormy’s Tavern

A 70-year-old Northfield
woman was struck
and killed by a vehicle
Saturday night, April 13,
outside of Stormy’s Tavern
and Grille.
The resident, Jacquelyn
Wittleder, was struck by
the vehicle after leaving
the establishment at 6:20
p.m. in the 1700 block of
Orchard Lane, according
to Northfield Police.
Wittleder was a “neighborhood
local,” Stormy’s
manager Jenny Wilson said.

pick-up opens at 7 a.m.
and closes at 7:50 a.m.

An opening ceremony
and raffle will be held at
7:55 a.m. The 5k run begins
at 8 a.m., and the 5k
walk begins at 8:05 a.m.
After the race, runners will
participate in a ceremony
with refreshments.
The race began in 2001,
when New Trier’s Wellness
Week featured a 5K
RUNdezvous focusing
on health and wellness in
the community and the
school. In 2003, the RUNdezvous
became the Run
to Remember in memory
of Shea Fitzgerald, Sam
Farmer and Julie Sorkin,
three graduates who died
in a Chicago porch collapse
that summer. In
2012, Jan Borja, former
principal and an avid supporter
of the run, passed
away after a long illness,
freak accident,” Wilson
told The Current. “It is
such a horrible situation.”
According to Wilson,
who said she was working
when the incident occurred,
Wittleder twisted
her ankle walking on the
street and fell behind a vehicle
that was reversing.
“Some of our workers
went out there and thought
she was fine,” Wilson said.
“But she died in surgery.
No one was drunk or anything
like that. It is so devastating
for both families
— [Wittleder’s] and the
driver’s.”
Wittleder was transported
to Evanston Hospital,
police reports say, where
she later died as a result of
her injuries.
She was pronounced
dead at 9:55 p.m., according
to the Office of the Cook
County Medical Examiner.
The accident is under investigation,
and there have
been no citations issued.
As of press time, Monday,
April 15, Northfield
Police Sergeant Michael
Hutensky said he cannot
share any further details.
