Cadets: Why new intakes wouldn’t have
sea time training problem — Rector
He pointed out that as a first
step, they had to drastically
reduce the number of
admission from between 1,200
- 2,000 to less than 250 to
ensure the quality of their
training as well as sea time for
them.
According to him, “On our
part as management in
conjunction with the board
members, we have decided to
reduce the cadet intake from
1,800 to about 30 in a class.
So with the 30 we can manage.
“We have invited SOAN to
come. It is not difficult for
them to put two cadets onboard
each of their vessels which is
about 15 to 20 ships and l know
ship owners have over a 100
ships in their fleet.
“The time the cadets have to
spend is about four years. After
National Diploma, ND1, the
cadets go for one year sea time
training and come back for
ND2.
“The first year they spend
onboard the academy pays, it
is not going to be free but we
expect the ship owners should
give us some concession too,
it is part of what we intend to
discuss with them when they
come. “We give them a sea log
book to record the number of
hours they spend at sea. So for
that one year, they would have
gained some sea time hours
and then they come back for
ND2.
“When they complete ND2,
they go for another one year
that means that they have two
years onboard. Then by the
time they come back for their
Higher National Diploma,
HND1, during their one year
break, they go back that
means three years onboard.
“When they graduate after
HND2, they are free. Where
they have worked, if they have
actually asserted themselves
and have made themselves
dependable, then the ship
owner will recall them just like
we have with youth corpers,”
he noted.
