SPORTS CLUBS and community 

groups have met with the city 

council to discuss the future use 

of Lancaster Park. 

The earthquake-damaged stadium 

is being pulled down, with 

demolition work scheduled to be 

completed later this year. 

City council staff have been 

discussing the future of the park 

with Ngāi Tahu, the Crown, the 

Linwood-Central-Heathcote 

Community Board and other key 

stakeholders such as the Charleston 

Neighbourhood Association, 

Woolston Community Association, 

XCHC, Phillipstown Community 

Hub and the Christchurch 

Youth Council. 

The plan is for the park to be 

used for sport as there is a shortage 

of parks in the communities 

neighbouring Lancaster Park. 

However, the city council is 

asking the community what 

attributes it wants to see in the

IT APPEARS local sports clubs and 

community groups will have input into 

what happens to Lancaster Park. 

A city council-led workshop has been 

held on the future of the park (see page 1). 

The workshop involved a number of sports clubs and groups 

from the local area. 

That’s a great sign because it does point to what the park 

should be used for in my view – sport and community activities. 

As Christchurch grows and high density housing becomes 

the norm in many areas, green space for recreation and sports 

matches will be vital to the health of the city. 

Instead of kids staying cooped up inside on the computer 

there needs to be plenty of green space to kick a ball around.

St Martins church up for sale 

ST ANNE’S Church in St 

Martins is for sale. 

The Anglican Diocese of 

Christchurch is selling the 

church and vicarage, on the 

corner of Wilsons and Centaurus 

Rds as is where is. 

St Anne’s, part of the Opawa/St 

Martins Parish, is on the market 

to help to raise money for 

repair and restoration work to be 

done on the other neighbouring 

Anglican church in the parish, St 

Mark’s in Opawa. 

The two churches 

amalgamated in 2007 as part 

of a Diocesan rationalisation 

programme. 

Reverend Canon Ben Truman, 

vicar of the Parish of Opawa/St 

Martins, said that the parishioners 

are sad but philosophical 

about relinquishing the site. 

“It’s a site that has been used 

for worship for almost 100 years. 

Services there began in the 1920s 

and the church there was built in 

the late 1940s. So, of course, we 

are sad. But we are very excited 

to begin work on repairing and 

renovating St Mark’s,” Rev Truman 

said. 

“As part of that renovation, 

plans are under way to include 

a small chapel, which we will 

call the Chapel of St Anne’s, in 

recognition of our parish history 

and to keep a new expression of

The Neil and Liam Finn summer 2018 tour of 

Aotearoa

Low Hum for a tour that took them to spots even the most 

ardent of Kiwi nomads would be hard-placed to point out 

on a map. It was a way to connect with audiences often

summer road-trip. ‘Where’s My Room’ was both a vacation for the Finns and their friends 

and a celebration of that li’l kiwi battler, the community hall. Nineteen shows in all, the tour 

stretched throughout January and saw Neil and Liam Finn debut live a wealth of material 

from their new collaborative album, Lightsleeper, as well as digging into the various band 

members’ envious and deep back catalogue of hits. Utilising his privileged position as 

promoter and tour manager, notorious music photographer Ian Jorgensen captured intimate 

moments of the Finns, crew and the visited communities on 35mm film. His candid 

portraiture documents the tour behind-the-scenes, showing what it’s like to be out on-theroad 

in rural New Zealand from the perspective of one of touring’s most roadworn advocates.

BROMLEY’S ODOUR issues

mobile phones. 

Environment Canterbury and 

the city council have been working 

together to investigate the ongoing 

issue of bad smells from industrial 

activity in the area. 

Now ECan has beta-tested an 

app, which would let residents 

and industries file and respond to 

odour complaints in real time. 

ECan manager zone delivery 

Paul Hulse said the public will be 

able to use the app to report how 

odour is impacting their environment 

and amenity. 

“They can advise us where they 

were when they smelt the odour, 

the intensity of the smell, what it 

smelt like and how long the odour 

lasted for. They can also see other 

reports of odour on a real-time 

map,” he said. 

But Mr Hulse said the project 

was in the very early stage. 

A prototype was piloted with 

previous complainants to help understand 

localised odour issues. 

“The app, while promising, 

needs further development and 

testing before a decision can be 

made as to if the solution will be 

implemented.”

Taylors, Sumner lifesavers awarded for rescue 

TAYLORS MISTAKE and 

Sumner surf life saving clubs 

received the national rescue of 

the month award. 

The award recognises operational 

excellence by surf lifeguards 

around New Zealand. 

The winners receive a $500 

BP gift card and a citation, and 

become finalists in the BP rescue 

of the year award. 

The award was given to a combination 

of Taylors Mistake and 

Sumner lifeguards for a rescue 

they performed in January. 

On January 3, lifeguards 

responded to a call that a young 

male had fallen off the cliff face 

at Taylors Mistake beach. 

Eight lifeguards from Taylors 

Mistake responded, with assistance 

from Sumner Surf Life 

Saving Club, to make sure the 

person had the best chance of 

survival in spite of being in a 

critical condition after a 10m fall 

onto rocks near the beach.

THIS IS what the new Taylors 

Mistake Surf Life Saving clubrooms 

will look like. 

Club president Ken Jones was 

hopeful work on the $3 million 

project would start by the end of 

the year. 

“If we can do it earlier we will but 

we are reliant on a smooth process 

with the council on the approval of 

the building consent application,” 

he said. 

Working drawings for the new 

clubhouse are currently being designed 

which will be submitted for 

building consent. 

The new building will be built in 

place of the old one which will be 

demolished. 

The old clubhouse was red-stickered

emergency call-out squad team 

including Kate Suter, Melissa 

Patterson, Eden Cotter and Tom 

Denman also launched their 

inflatable rescue boat to assist, 

however, due to the low tide, 

lifeguards were able to reach the 

earthquake rendered its previous 

stop-gap repairs unsafe. 

Since then the club has had to 

operate out of three portacom 

buildings. 

The temporary facilities, which 

cost the club about $95,000, include 

a first aid room, a patrol and 

administration room, and a smoko 

room. 

Mr Jones said the new clubrooms 

would be a “healthier and cleaner 

environment” than the temporary 

facilities the club is currently operating 

out of. 

“At the moment you can’t have 

the whole family come over whereas 

we will have a facility where 

everyone can be involved.” 

Mr Jones said specific details for 

the new building would become 

clearer once the working drawings 

were finalised.

helicopter and an off-duty 

nurse to stabilise the patient 

allowing him to be winched 

away from the rocks and incoming 

tide, onto the beach, before 

being airlifted to hospital.

Southern Region manager Chris 

Jeffery said this was another 

example of the wide range of 

skills volunteer surf lifeguards 

have, particularly the advanced 

first aid skills that make 

them “valuable assets to the 

community, even away from the 

beach.” 

“The surf lifeguards that 

responded to this rescue are 

some of the most experienced 

at Taylors [Mistake]. They have 

invested a lot of their own time 

upskilling both in lifeguarding 

abilities and first aid, and we 

couldn’t have had better people 

on scene to help,” he said. 

At the time of the rescue, police 

had high praise for the lifeguards 

involved, and made special mention 

of their skills, including the 

ability to clear a safe landing area 

for the helicopter and the way 

they integrated their first aid expertise 

into the response without 

requiring guidance. 

The Taylors Mistake Surf 

Life Saving Club also took out 

second place in conjunction 

with the Sumner club where 

they were awarded an additional 

$300 of BP gift cards for another 

rescue which was completed in 

January.

Jean Rogatski loves living in her 

serviced apartment at Ryman 

Healthcare’s Essie Summers 

Retirement Village where she 

has the best of both worlds – 

independence and a helping 

hand from village staff if she

Jean has a slice of paradise

and her husband Neville moved 

to Akaroa, both aged in their

more care and the decision was 

made to move back to the city 

and eventually Essie Summers 

Retirement Village. Rosemary 

Deane, the village manager, 

had always said they would 

be welcome. 

The couple worked hard in 

their early careers – Neville had 

been a cabinet maker by trade 

who then became a furniture 

buyer for the Farmers Trading 

Company group. From the 

1950s Jean worked as a secretary 

and a personal assistant to 

the chief executive of AM 

Satterthwaite, an importing 

and distribution company. 

She took some time off to raise 

two children, but then returned 

to work and became the South 

Island general manager. 

After moving to Akaroa, the 

couple lived in Takamatua 

Bay, near the main Akaroa 

township. Jean recalls that 

it was a wonderful place to 

live. Neville often went shing

the pair quickly became 

part of the community. 

Jean’s administrative skills 

saw her become involved in 

local committees. 

Jean and Neville moved to 

Essie Summers village in late 

2014. Jean moved into her 

serviced apartment and Neville 

to the care centre. Jean’s 

apartment reminds her of 

their Akaroa lifestyle. She likes 

to read the newspaper on the 

deck in the morning. Each day 

she enjoys spending time with 

Neville in his room and they 

enjoy the village facilities and 

staff care. 

Jean loves the privacy of her 

own apartment, but also enjoys 

the facilities that include a 

large, bright village atrium with 

inside seating and gardens. She 

uses the area for relaxing and 

group or solo activities such as 

needlework. Village facilities 

include a library, atrium, hair 

salon, pool table, bar, village 

centre and shop. 

Essie Summers provides 

independent living, assisted 

living in serviced apartments, 

along with the very best 

of resthome, hospital and 

dementia care. The staff 

look after her if she ever has 

problems with her asthma. “I’ve 

never regretted coming here, 

it’s wonderful and the staff are 

very caring.” 

Jean also has a car at the 

village and loves to keep 

connected to the city, her 

friends and regular shopping 

events. “I like it here because 

it’s on the bus route, if it 

ever gets to the point where I 

can’t drive. It’s got the grocers 

across the road, there are a 

lot of food courts around – 

everything’s easy. 

“My son comes in once a week 

with food for Neville and we 

have sh and chips, oysters or 

whatever’s going.” 

She has also used the village 

van option for either shopping 

or café expeditions. 

She and other residents enjoy 

a monthly ‘metro’ trip, courtesy 

of their SuperGold Cards. They 

set off around 10am and catch a 

morning tea or lunch in the city. 

On a recent trip they caught 

the bus to Lyttelton and then 

the ferry across to Diamond 

Harbour before returning to 

the village. 

Jean likes being able to 

stay in touch with her ve 

grandchildren and ve greatgrandchildren. 

She also loves 

the local community. 

Sales Advisor Michelle Van 

der Park said the location of the 

village appeals to many, given 

that it is close to the Beckenham 

shops and wonderful 

community facilities. There is 

a supermarket across the road 

and a bus stop right at the gate.
