Lockport City Council
Officials hear plans for new B&B Foods location
Jesse Wright
Freelance Reporter
During the April 17
Lockport City Council
meeting, officials were
presented with a requested
zoning variance and plan
to move B&B Foods from
its State Street location
to a business park at Wall
Street and Prime Boulevard.
Developers had gone
through the planning and
zoning office, but the zoning
variance was denied,
because the developers
hadn’t provided enough
information, according
to city administrator Ben
Benson. That information
was presented during the
meeting.
In a short statement,
Jennifer Barrios, the director
of operations for the
food distributor, said the
business was opened by
her family 12 years ago
and they would like to stay
in Lockport.
reality
From Page 5
ents identify everyday
items that may indicate
that a child needs help.
“This is categorized as
a girl’s bedroom,” Lieutenant
Edward Hayes explained.
“It teaches parents
– you have to be 21 or
over to enter the trailer –
how to look through your
child’s room for indicators.
Maybe your child
has changed a behavior
and, as a parent, you need
to look for these indicators
and see if maybe your
child is possibly involved
in drug use or some other
issues, including sexual
contact or depression.
Through these indicators
“We consider Lockport
our home,” she said.
When Benson introduced
the topic, he said
to date the City has not
received any complaints
from current neighbors
about the company and
added that the new location
is a newer, larger
space.
He also said the business
does not run 24 hours, the
delivery trucks do not have
backup alarms and there
will be a limited fleet of
trucks that should not impact
local traffic.
Charles Smith, the project’s
developer, told the
City the plan includes a
four-foot berm that is to be
topped with an eight-foot
fence and all of this will
be obscured by trees and
shrubs. These measures
are to limit sound and also
make part of the operation
virtually invisible to
neighbors.
Alderwoman Catherine
hopefully we can have
some intervention through
the family or counseling
or leadership to help this
individual get through a
difficult time. ”
The Road to Reality has
been a passion project for
LTHS social worker Sue
Hudders throughout her
career. In a written statement,
she expressed her
gratitude for all of the individuals
and groups that
came together to make the
program a success for the
past 18 years.
“I have experienced and
witnessed the tragedy of
losing students over the
last 25 years,” she wrote.
“It has been the loss of
these students that motivates
me to keep The Road
to Reality going. I feel so
Perretta referred to B&B
Foods as a Costco for restaurants.
“Right now their space
is too small to provide all
the supplies restaurants
might require, and this
would allow them to expand,”
she said, adding
that she visited the existing
location and was impressed.
Mayor Steve Streit said
he is happy with the existing
location and has confidence
the company will be
good neighbors at the new
location.
“I never heard any noise,
I’ve never smelled anything,”
Streit said of the
existing space. “It’s a nice
operation and clearly you
guys have outgrown it. I
think you’ve been a great
asset and a great neighbor
and I’m pleased you want
to stay in the city.”
The council is to vote on
the zoning variance at its
next meeting.
privileged to be a part of
this program from its onset.
Working together with
all these agencies to help
positively impact young
people’s lives and possibly
saving a life is powerful
and humbling.”
Hudders will be retiring
at the end of the school
year. Ferkaluk noted that
her dedication to the job
will be missed.
“Our staff surrounds
Sue and helps her in any
way they can, but she
truly takes this on as her
passion project,” Ferkaluk
said. “The Road to Reality
is the event that rounds
out our year. She’s going
to be retiring from us in a
couple months and we’re
losing somebody fantastic.”
