Meadow Ridge’s fourth-graders pitch to
professionals during Entrepreneur Expo
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
For the past decade, the
reality show “Shark Tank”
has inspired new entrepreneurs
to dip their toes into
the waters of business.
On Thursday, April 18,
14 fourth-grade enrichment
students at Meadow
Ridge School stepped into
the tank — also known
as the multipurpose room
— to pitch local business
owners to invest in their
companies and products
during the Entrepreneur
Expo: Shark Tank Style.
The program showcased
the many talents of these
young innovators, who
offered solutions to everyday
problems, such as reducing
waste, entertaining
pets and hydrating while
playing sports.
Enrichment resource
teacher Lauren Musielewicz
said students began
learning beginner business
concepts more than a year
ago.
“In third grade, I introduce
them to some basic
economics, like wants versus
needs, goods versus
services, productive resources,
choice and opportunity
cost,” Musielewicz
said. “We review that in
fourth grade, and then we
move on to higher-level
economics concepts.”
Profit and loss, entrepreneurship,
business plans,
market surveys and more
were among the areas explored
by the fourth-graders
as they developed their
products. Also, elements
of math, science and social
studies — students study
regions to learn about
where resources are found
and produced — are combined
as children in the enrichment
program develop
their products.
“First, they come up
with something that bugs
them — what is it that really
bothers them that they
want to solve,” Musielewicz
said. “From there,
they create the name for
their product, a logo and
slogan. They come up with
start-up costs, so they do
a lot of research on what
it would take to actually
build their product.”
Students also created
their own websites and
marketing plans.
Yazhi Paguntalan’s
product was designed as a
delicious solution to preventing
waste.
“My product is called
Yum Cones,” Paguntalan
said. “They’re edible popcorn
containers. They’re
all natural, and they’re not
like other popcorn containers,
where you just eat the
popcorn and you throw it
away after.”
She added that Yum
Cones are available in apple
flavor and are the perfect
item for anyone who
likes to watch movies.
“If I would expand into
a real business, I would
sell to Marcus Theatres,
because I realized that
when everyone walks out
of a movie, there’s this one
guy who holds out the garbage
can for them to throw
away their popcorn containers,”
Paguntalan said.
Zain Shalabi also wanted
to make a common item
greener with his Walk N
Charge solar-powered
backpack.
Please see shark, 4
Orland Park Village Board
LaGrange Road hotel project
back on the table with revisions
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The Orland Park Village
Board will soon decide
whether or not to bring another
hotel into town after
the Development Services,
Planning and Engineering
Committee voted 3-0 on
April 15 to recommend the
full board approve the project
at a future meeting.
Hawkeye Hotels, the
petitioner of the project, is
seeking approval of a fivestory,
84,514-square-foot
hotel on approximately
3.89 acres of vacant land
located between 16160 and
16186 LaGrange Road.
The hotel is proposed to
have 158 rooms and 199
parking spaces.
Khurshid Hoda, director
of programs and engineering
services with the Village,
said the project was
unanimously approved by
the Plan Commission on
April 2.
Hoda noted that in 2016,
the petitioner submitted a
request to build two hotels
at the site. That request was
met with apprehension by
nearby residents.
Ultimately, it was referred
onto the Development
Services, Planning
and Engineering Committee,
where the request was
forwarded to the full Village
Board with no recommendation.
The request did not come
up on the board floor, and
the plan has changed since
then.
“What they are doing is
proposing one hotel with
less square footage and less
number of rooms, as well
as less parking,” Hoda said.
The new plan is roughly
a 75,000-square-foot decrease
in area and a reduction
of 68 rooms, Hoda
said. He also noted there
are 16 fewer parking spaces
being requested.
“We have looked at it,
and there is more greenspace
in this project than
what it was in 2016,” Hoda
added.
Hoda said there were
three “major elements” that
were brought up at the Plan
Commission meeting by
residents: traffic impact,
landscaping and land use
compatibility. He said staff
worked with the petitioner
and the petitioner’s consultant
to research the traffic
volume at the site and projections
of what it will look
like after the hotel would
be built.
Hoda said staff also
looked over landscaping
plans from the petitioner,
and worked with them to
include “heavy landscaping”
on the east and west
sides of the project.
Additionally, a stipulation
the Village would require
of the petitioner upon
approval is to “return within
one year of final installation
of landscaping to add
any additional landscaping
deemed necessary by the
Development Services Department
to screen or further
enhance the site,” per
the staff report.
Hoda said the Village
also received two letters
from restaurants near the
proposed site. He said both
supported the project.
Jay Patel, Hawkeye Hotels,
said they decided to
move forward with just one
hotel based on feedback
they received in 2016.
Trustee James Dodge
also confirmed with Hoda
that the Village was expecting
“a minimal amount of
traffic on 97th [Avenue].”
Patel said the permitting
phase may take up to
six months, but he hopes
to break ground in 2019
— ideally in September or
October.
“This is going to be a
metal-stud building, so
weather does not really affect
us, as long as we excavate
and have foundation
and slab done,” he said.
There were no comments
from the public during the
committee meeting.
Board members bid
farewell
Later, during the regular
meeting of the Village
Board, outgoing Trustees
Michael Carroll, Pat Gira
and Carole Griffin Ruzich
were honored by the rest
of the board members and
staff. Each were presented
with engraved watches,
flowers and street signs
with their names on them.
Board members and the
mayor also made comments
during the recognitions.
Carroll complimented
and thanked staff, as well
as the other board members.
“I do really treasure the
time I’ve spent with all six
of these board members
with whom I’ve served,”
he said.
Ruzich thanked her family,
the fellow board members
and also the public for
supporting her in past elections.
Round It Up
A brief recap of action and discussion from the
April 15 meeting of the Orland Park Village Board
• Alexandra Snodsmith, of the Village clerk’s
office and co-chairperson of the Village’s Live
Well Committee, presented a check for $2,487 to
• The Village Board voted unanimously to approve
the appointment of Mohammed El Natour to the
Veterans Commission.
• In another unanimous vote, the Village Board
approved the appointment of Sean Kampas as
chairman of the Technology Commission.
elected me and allowed us
to do our jobs: You are the
most important people to
Gira gave plaudits to the
Village staff.
“We have the best,” she
said of staff.
Gira also complimented
her fellow board members
and reflected fondly on her
time serving the public.
“It’s been sometimes
harder than others, but I
have enjoyed every minute
representing the residents
of this community,” she
said.
A seemingly unprompted
show of support
During the nonscheduled
speakers portion of
the meeting, Jeff Dexter,
a staff representative from
the American Federation of
State, County & Municipal
Employees Council 31, addressed
the Village Board
to talk about labor relations.
“Our members represent
the public image of this Village,”
Dexter said.
He said in 2012, there
was a strained relationship
between AFSCME and the
former Village manager, as
well as issues in reaching a
union agreement.
Dexter said in 2017,
when Joe La Margo was
officially named Village
manager, the relationship
with the union improved.
“Joe La Margo has
worked tirelessly with our
local union to not only
understand in detail what
we do but [also] to work
through issues to ensure
we avoid grievances and a
host of other issues that in
the past were something we
could not work out,” Dexter
said.
Later, during board comments,
Trustee Kathleen
Fenton thanked staff for
coming to honor the outgoing
trustees before singling
out La Margo for “his
dedicated work, for being
a great Village manager,
and helping all of us do our
job.”
Trustee Dan Calandriello
also complimented staff
and added that La Margo
has done “a marvelous job”
since taking over as Village
manager.
“He’s been a great Village
manager, and I just
want to thank him for all
his service throughout the
last 13 years with the Village.”
Mayor Keith Pekau by
phone April 16 declined to
comment status of LaMargo
and the Village manager’s
position in relation
to what prompted a show
of support for him at the
meeting.
Reached April 17, La
Margo, when similarly
asked about his status and
the show of support, provided
a brief statement
about his status with the
Village, noting he looks
“forward to working with
the mayor and new board.”
Dexter did not return a
call before press time seeking
further comment.
“Basically, electricity
comes from coal, and that
ruins the environment,”
Shalabi said. “So, I created
my product, which charges
your phone by solar power
without ruining the environment.
You can carry it
around, and most people
— maybe college students
— would probably use it a
lot.”
The Sharks — local
business owners and organization
representatives
— had the opportunity to
meet with students and try
their products before the
presentations. After each
pitch, the Sharks asked
questions, shared enthusiasm
and offered advice.
Caitlin Reiter was the
first entrepreneur to give
her elevator pitch. She
explained that her Fidget
blind bags with five layers
of surprise fidgets to help
people stay focused. Each
fidget was wrapped in bubble
wrap, which also could
be used as a fidget itself.
Later, Adrienne Maynard
said she developed
her Kitten Play: Ultimate
Play Pack with her cats
Toby and Telly in mind.
“It’s a cat toy, and I
came up with this because
my cats always love to
play, but they get bored
with the cat toys we have,”
Maynard said.
Musielewicz said she
was grateful for the support
of parents, teachers,
sponsors and everyone
who helped to make the
Entrepreneur Expo a success.
She also credited students
for their efforts.
“I think that when we set
our expectations high for
the students, they will rise
to the challenge,” Musielewicz
said. “And I don’t
think it’s ever too early to
start teaching them about
personal finance and economics.”

A wide range of emotions
At the beginning, there
were tears.
At the end, there were
big laughs.
The District 230 Foundation
Legacy Hall ceremony
ran the gamut of
emotions on April 12 at
Silver Lake Country Club
in Orland Park.
The first of the 11 inductees
was Stagg graduate
Brian Baldea, a legendary
University of Chicago
baseball coach, who died
in 2017. His son Anthony
broke down crying a
few times while giving a
speech for his father.
The last of the inductees
was Stagg’s Michael Rogers,
who is a Global Dams
practice leader at Stantec.
Vice President Dave
Sandburg graduate Tanya Carter had fun with those
in the audience April 12 during her induction into the
District 230 Foundation Legacy Hall at Silver Lake
Country Club. Jeff Vorva/22nd Century Media
O’Connor started to introduce
Rogers, paused, and
said, “I’ve never said the
word ‘dam’ so much in my
life.”
That produced laughter
from the hundreds in the
crowd. It also produced
laughter from O’Connor
himself, who had a case
of the giggles. Every time
committee member applications by May 12
Submitted by Orland
School D135
The Orland School District
135 Board of Education
is seeking applicants
for five advisory committees
to assist in gathering
information and feedback
from the community to
guide board’s decisionmaking.
The committees will be
as follows: Communications,
Finance/Operations,
Policy/Personnel, Teaching
and Learning, and
Technology.
Each committee is to be
made up of board members,
D135 staff, and parents
or community members
to ensure an array of
perspectives on each topic.
While the advisory committees
will not vote on
district matters, they will
provide insight to board
members, and they will
guide board discussion
during School Board meetings.
Interested parties should
use the online application
to apply to serve on a committee.
Applications will
be accepted through Sunday,
May 12.
Once the application
window closes, a boarddirected
committee, made
up of board members,
parents and community
members, and staff members,
will review and score
all applications based on a
rubric. Identifying information
will be removed
from all applications prior
to the scoring process. All
applicants will be notified
via email once the committee
selection process is
complete.
Women learn tips and tricks for self-defense
Orland Parkers
Margo McDermed’s
program
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
For a group of women
taking a recent Self-Defense,
Distraction and
Awareness Tactics class,
they had one word in mind
for themselves: safety.
The class, taught by One
Light Self-Defense and
organized by State Rep.
Margo McDermed (D37-
Mokena), was held April
9 at Parker Road Bible
Church in Mokena.
“We do these free community
events about four
times a year,” said Amy
Shanks, communications
analyst with the Illinois
Contact Lens Care • Family Practice
House Republicans. “This
is less about politics and
more about providing services.
“This is something that
when you really need it,
you want to have that
knowledge. This is to prepare
for something ahead
of time. We heard about
this group, One Light Self-
Defense, who gives these
free classes. We thought
we’d bring them in because
they put on a great
class. Last year, we had
someone come back and
tell us they had used what
they had learned.”
Shanks, herself, has taken
this class.
“There are common
misconceptions about
defense, such as: When
women walking with their
keys between their fingers,
that’s actually not a
great way to keep safe because
the keys bend over,”
Shanks said. “Tonight,
these women will learn
how to get out of holds
when someone grabs your
arm or your neck. They
don’t teach fighting back;
it’s about how to get away
from your attacker.”
Staying safe is important
for Leslie Labit, of
Mokena. She and her adult
daughter Amy Griffin, of
Frankfort, took the class
together.
“It’s important to me,
because I wanted to learn
how to defend myself and
for my daughter to learn
that, as well,” Labit said.
Gary and Jeanette Brook,
of Orland Park, teach skills
on how to act in various
situations. They have been
married 33 years and they
have dedicated their lives
in serving others. Both
have been doing martial
arts for more than 23 years.
6,500 people in the United
States.
“We have 10 people on
our team that volunteers to
do this,” Gary said. “We
help teach people on how
to stay safe.”
Jeanette added, “Anyone
can be a victim at any
time. ... You need to be
prepared at all times.”

New health fair gets Sandburg students socializing
Mental, emotional
health are among
focuses of program
Bill Jones, Editor
Sean Airola cannot help
himself when it comes to
revamping what physical
education and health can
mean for high school students.
After last year unveiling
a more tech-heavy
curriculum to update
physical education for
2018, Airola — Sandburg
High School’s division
chairman for physical education,
health and sports
medicine — was sitting
on the pool deck, thinking
about how he could
improve mental and social
well-being education
as the next step forward,
as the mind and body are
“one big whole.”
“I felt the best avenue
was within our health curriculum,”
he said.
And Sandburg’s inaugural
Mental-Emotional-
Social Health Fair was
born.
The fair kicked off the
morning of Thursday,
April 18, with a keynote
presentation from Karissa
Kouchis, a Sandburg
graduate who now works
with Tony Robbins. She
spent time in the school’s
Performing Arts Center
teaching students how
they can harness and focus
their emotions to
achieve their goals. She
talked about limited mental
states versus empowering
ones, and instead
of a lecture engaged the
students with shows of
hands, activities and open
discussion.
“She pumps up kids and
gives them the chance to
get out of their slumps,”
Airola said.
That was a goal of the
program as a whole: to
take students at an age
when their chemistry and
emotions are changing,
and give different personalities
the chance to
interact, open up to one
another and feel comfortable
with themselves.
“Oftentimes, you have
kids that don’t want to
branch out, get out of their
comfort zone,” Airola said
of high school. “We’re going
to give them that opportunity.
... There’s more
time to be social in these
kinds of settings.”
Students got to help
each other along that
path. Following the presentation,
students broke
out into three groups and
rotated through stations.
One stayed with Kouchis
to spend more time on the
keynote message; another
talked with social workers;
and the last got to
check out the fair itself,
which included outside
organizations such as The
Bridge Teen Center and
Orland Park Public Library,
as well as service
opportunities. But it also
featured student groups
such as Student Council,
Honor Society and SuperfanZ.
Twins Rachel and Ashley
Keller talked to students
about FEMpower,
Sandburg’s feminist club.
“Our goal is to empower
women and female students,”
Rachel said, noting
the group also raises money
for Girl Up, a United
Nations Foundation organization
that helps women
in developing countries.
The students also said
the group deals with intersectional
feminism,
encouraging everyone to
join the conversation. And
Ashley said she felt the
message was an important
one to have at the fair.
Dave Pascarella, from The Bride Teen Center, waits with Sandburg student Omar Beirat as a wheel spins to
determine his prize on Thursday, April 18, at the Mental-Emotional-Social Health Fair held at the high school.
Photos by Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
“We like to promote
self-love with women,”
she said.
The school’s Mindfulness
Club also had a booth.
Its goal was to share what
it can offer students.
“It teaches you to be
compassionate to ourselves
and others,” Mariam
Jaber said of the club’s
simple message.
Student Omar Beirat
said he had a great time
checking it out.
“I enjoyed it,” he said.
“It’s really good that the
schools are pushing for the
healthy stuff.”
He said the presentation
was fun, too.
“She’s really motivating
and gave us things to think
about,” Beirat said.
In a breakout group later
in the morning, Kouchis
encouraged students to “let
yourself soar,” and Airola
said he hopes that is what
this program does, too.
The curriculum continues
Mindfulness Club members (left to right) Victoria
Eakins, Nicole Buckley and Mariam Jaber pose at their
booth.
to evolve, and the educator
said this fair was the result
of how the education has
evolved over the last couple
of years, as well as the
support of not only others
in the physical education/
health department but also
the rest of the school and
district, who see an opportunity
to connect to students
on a different level.
“Everyone needs to play
a part,” Airola said, noting
he was allowed to “field
trip” the students for the
first three periods to take
part in this event.
In a twist from Airola’s
recent tech focus with
physical education, he said
it might be the tech that
makes it more difficult for
students to socialize nowadays,
because something
is lost as they spend more
time communicating electronically.
“They’re not talking
about where they’re at
mentally and emotionally,”
he said.
He is hoping programs
like this can change that
going forward, setting a
template for other schools
in the district in the process.
“I don’t think they knew
what to expect today,” Airola
said of the students.
“We’re going to see how
it goes.”

Orland School D135 Board of Education
Bryk explains proposed
$10 million in bond issues
Bill Jones, Editor
Orland School District
135 is gearing up to issue
a combined total of $10
million in bonds.
The Board of Education
voted 6-0 twice on April
8 for one resolution authorizing
the intent to issue
$6.8 million in bonds
for the purpose of paying
claims against Orland
School District 135 and a
separate resolution declaring
an intent to issue $3.2
million in working cash
fund bonds. Board Member
Angie Sexton was absent.
According to John
Bryk, an assistant superintendent
who is overseeing
the duties of superintendent
as DJ Skogsberg
is on leave, D135 intends
to use the funds from the
working cash bond issue
to complete capital projects
that include Liberty,
Century, Park and Prairie
schools roof projects, as
well as the replacement of
HVAC rooftop units and
two school playground
sets.
The payback on the
bonds is to occur over
the next six years, with
an estimated total interest
cost “conservatively estimated”
at $300,000 Bryk
said.
The $6.8 million bond
issue is a refunding to
cover the claim of Series
2012 Debt Certificates.
“Nothing else is included
in the funding bond
other than the refunding
of the debt certificates,”
Bryk wrote in an email to
The Orland Park Prairie.
The payback time of six
years matches the existing
debt certificates, and
the estimated interest cost
on the refunding bonds is
$615,000.
Both are to be paid with
a level debt service.
“The proposed bond
resolution will assist the
district in continuing to
maintain high-quality
programming and meeting
unfunded State mandates,”
Bryk said. “This
will also help the District
stay ahead of any potential
State and local funding
issues.”
was set to begin April 15.
The project is expected
to last 4-6 weeks and is
may be limited, and the
east side of the building,
including the 149th Street
Police Reports
Orland Park man reportedly made up story about being robbed outside gas station
Yacub S. Ibrahim, 41,
of 17505 Brook Crossing
Drive in Orland Park, was
charged March 26 with
felony disorderly conduct
after he allegedly reported
an armed robbery that did
not actually happen outside
of Circle K, 17940
Wolf Road.
Police were dispatched
there after receiving a call
of someone being robbed
of his wallet and punched
in the stomach by two offenders
described as black
males, according to the report.
The man claimed one
was armed with a knife
and the other implied he
had a gun but did not display
it, and the two got
into a black sedan last seen
on LaGrange Road.
But an employee told
police no robbery had occurred
but a male who often
causes problems at the
store had just left after she
refused to give him cigarettes.
Police then reportedly
stopped at a gas station at
11200 183rd Place, where
and employee said a male
who typically causes problems
just left after buying
cigarettes. The man,
later identified as Ibrahim,
mentioned he called police
for the aforementioned
reason, according to the
report. Police recognized
him from video as someone
who had previously
been arrested for allegedly
making false 911 calls.
Finally, police stopped
at the Starbucks at 18092
Wolf Road, where an employee
of another store
said Ibrahim talked about
going, and Ibrahim was
spotted traveling northbound
along Wolf Road.
He repeated his story
about being robbed, gave
specific times and said it
happened right as he exited
the Circle K on Wolf,
according to the report. He
also reportedly provided
police with the telephone
number used to make the
911 call.
But police said he still
had his driver’s license as
well as credit and debit
cards, and video at the gas
station documented him
leaving without incident.
March 22
• Mark A. Peterson, 53, of
4454 Damen Ave. in Chicago,
was charged with
retail theft after he allegedly
tried to take two pairs
of headphones valued at
a total of $699.90 from a
store at Orland Square. He
reportedly concealed the
headphones under a jacket
and fled the store without
paying for the items.
Following his arrest at
2:09 p.m., Peterson reportedly
was arrested again at
5:45 p.m. In the second
instance, he allegedly tried
to take two pairs of headphones
valued at $199.98
from a store on Orland
Park Place. This time, he
took the security sensors
off of the boxes, placed the
headphones under a jacket
and left the store without
paying for them, police
said. Peterson reportedly
ran eastbound through the
parking lot and was later
spotted in the passenger’s
seat of a Jeep that was
stopped.
March 20
• Liana P. Bolden, 21, of
5826 Timberlane Road in
Matteson, was charged
with retail theft after she
allegedly tried to take various
merchandise valued at
a total of $538.67 from a
store in the 15800 block of
94th Avenue. She reportedly
put the items in a plastic
tote inside of a shopping
cart and left without paying
for the items.
March 15
• Mary L. Rogers, 48, of
18951 Richard Ave. in
Mokena, was charged with
retail theft after she allegedly
tried to take four
bottles of tequila valued
at a total of $91.96 from a
grocery store in the 17900
block of Wolf Road. She
reportedly concealed the
items in a trench coat and
left the store without paying
for them. She was
stopped as the passenger
in a 2009 Ford Focus on
northbound Wolf Road at
the intersection with Bernard
Drive.
Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre
seeks additional sales of liquor
Patrons of the Hollywood
Casino Amphitheatre may soon
have more ways to purchase alcohol.
The Tinley Park Village Board
voted 5-0 on April 16 to direct
the Village attorney to draft an
ordinance that would amend the
liquor license classifications for
the concert venue.
A vote on final approval of the
ordinance is expected during the
board’s first meeting in May.
Per the request, representatives
from Hollywood Casino
Amphitheatre and Legends Music
LLC, are asking for changes
to the venue’s Class I and J licenses.
Changes to the Class I license
would include allowing for the
sale of alcohol within the fence
line and at two designated points
of sale; within a secured, temporarily
fenced-in area for events
during which all-day concerts
are playing in the parking lot;
and within an extended fence
line outside of Gate 4 (and possibly
Gate 3, if attendance is more
than 23,000).
Other changes to the Class I license
would allow for the sale of
wine in recyclable cans and wine
coolers up to 25 ounces, as well
as mobile vendors selling alcohol
in the lawn section.
Changes to the Class J license
Letters to the Editor
Transform your toxic turf
As I wandered into the mecca of suburbia,
also known as Costco, I was met by
pallets upon pallets of synthetic fertilizers.
I was a bit disturbed. No suburban lawn
needs a 10-gallon bucket of chemicals.
I take no issue with homeowners devoting
themselves to a well-curated lawn. I do
take issue with the fact that many homeowners
have fallen guise to the advertisements
of Big Ag.
So, fellow suburbanites, put the buckets
of fertilizer back; there is a better way.
The humble turf grass is, in fact, a
mighty plant. What it lacks in exotic beauty
it makes up for by design. Beneath the
green blades, however, is where the real
action happens. The soil is teeming with
tons — literal tons — of microfauna that
bring grass to life.
Those microfauna are the best “fertilizers”
around. They break up any organic
matter that falls atop the grass and incorporate
it back into the soil so that the roots can
access it. But these tiny little machines are
hindered by synthetic fertilizers. The solutions
to these problems, though, are all free.
1. Cut your grass higher and leave the
grass clippings. Simply mulching as you
way to get inside of the
minds of children — what
they see as problems,
and what their creativity
conjures as solutions. It
makes for great photos.
The presentations are fun.
The discussions some of
the most enjoyable interviews
you’ll ever do.
But we at the paper have
already taken a keen interest
in what Airola has been
doing to upgrade physical
education with technology,
and I was curious to know
what he had in store for the
health side of things. It was
a first-time event, tackling
a topic too often left undiscussed.
And so I sided with
trying something new.
I asked Laurie Fanelli
to cover the Entrepreneur
Expo. She got some great
photos, fun pitches and
our cover story for this
week.
But please don’t sleep
on the health fair story on
Page 8. It’s important.
At the fair itself, a nice
woman had the thankless
task of trying to get more
students to volunteer.
Student groups were more
than happy to talk to peers
interested in joining their
ranks. And a few area
organizations came out to
show high-schoolers what
they have to offer. And
a prize wheel from The
Bridge Teen Center stole
the show. (A prize wheel
always steals the show.)
Inside of the auditorium
at the Performing Arts
Center, Karissa Kouchis
first addressed the whole
of the sophomore health
students in attendance,
then worked with them in
smaller numbers during
mow is a natural fertilizer. The grass will
break down and be used by the microfauna
to return nutrients back into the soil. As
a bonus, the clippings can help shade the
grass from the harsh summer sun it does
not like. A higher cut also allows the grass
to retain its natural moisture. So, less time
cutting the grass and less time spent watering.
2. And, if the grass starts to turn brown,
do not rush to water it — let it be. For this is
the miracle of grass. It knows when to take
a break and when to wake up. Rest easy
that if your lawn goes brown, it is not a
reflection of poor home ownership; rather,
it is a reflection of a responsible, sustainable
and healthy household. Save money
on your water bill; let nature do her work.
3. As autumn rolls around, let your
leaves be to sit under the winter’s snow and
melt away into the lawn. Come spring, no
fertilizer will be needed.
This summer, make a pledge to keep
your lawn free of fertilizers, excessive watering
and too much work. Let your “lowmaintenance”
lawn be truly low-maintenance.
Allison Carmody
Orland Park resident
breakout sessions. The
message there was simple:
Know how to make your
emotions work for you in
achieving your goals. The
students seemed to have
fun with it.
But underlying all of it
was something more. The
students were out of the
classrooms, interacting
not only with the teachers,
a graduate and the other
adults in the room but also
with each other. And the
education had a lot to do
with socialization. It was
about getting them out
of a comfort zone, Airola
said, and it seemed to be
working quite well.
I was happy to play a
small part in the conversation
by covering it, and I
hope it’s a conversation
that doesn’t stop anytime
soon.
Orland Park’s Easter Egg Hunt
On April 13, the Orland
Park Public Library held a
mini-golf event for teenagers
and children.
As part of an ongoing
effort to bring together
teens and children, the
teens designed and built
a mini-golf course inside
the library out of everyday
library items, such as
books. Then, they paired
up with a children and
navigated the course together.
“This is our first year
doing this,” said Vanessa
Fernandez, a youth services
reference librarian.
After the teens designed
and built the course, they
also tested it, assigning
pars for each hole. They
worked on the project for
two days.
“I think a lot of the teens
have a passion for working
with kids, and they’re also
getting service hours and
having a huge blast doing
it,” Fernandez said.
The children seemed
to enjoy it, as many went
times to revisit favorite
The Dish
Texas de Brazil brings slow-roasted meats to OP
Steakhouse picks
southwest suburbs
for third Chicago-area
location
Thomas Czaja
Contributing Editor
A small, two-sided disc on the
table is flipped from red to green.
Suddenly, one by one, a variety
of meats begin to arrive.
The gauchos, or servers, bring
the flame-roasted meat selections
tableside, carving them off
the skewer for hungry guests,
who occasionally offer assistance
by using tongs to help pry
the succulent cuts loose. When
guests are ready for a break from
the parade of meats, they simply
flip the disc back to red.
With this system in place, Texas
de Brazil allows its guests to
eat at their own pace, making for
a quick or relaxed dining experience.
The eatery, which opened
its third Chicago-area location
April 5 in Orland Square, is a
churrascaria, cooking meats in a
churrasco style, which translates
loosely into “barbecue” from
Portuguese.
The Brazilian steakhouse
brand was first started in Texas.
And its name is a nod to idea of
blending Brazilian culture and
cuisine with a cordial Texan and
southern hospitality. The Orland
Park location marks the chain’s
62nd spot worldwide.
“We had a lot of feedback
from our guests that were going
to Schaumburg and going
to Chicago requesting we come
out here,” said Carlos Restrepo,
corporate training manager for
Texas de Brazil. “A lot of people
live closer to over here. That’s
where we are fortunate we had
a good following, so when we
opened the doors people were
excited for us already.”
Those who visit Texas de
Brazil pay a fixed price. Regular
adult meals with endless offerings
of meat and a chance to
pick from approximately 50 selections
in a salad area is $44.99,
with a cost of $29.99 for just the
salad area.
During lunch on the weekends,
diners also get a dessert of
their choice as well as bottomless
non-alcoholic drinks included
in the regular price. Desserts
and drinks typically cost extra.
Children ages 2 and younger
can eat for free, with ages 3-5
costing $5 and ages 6-12 being
50 percent off an adult meal
price, all when a full-price meal
is purchased with them.
When it comes to the meats,
there are notable favorites.
“By far, the flank steak and the
picanha are the most popular,”
Restrepo said. “The picanha is
the top part of the sirloin. That’s
our house specialty. It’s really
tender and going to have a little
bit of a fat cap around the edge.
When it’s sliced very thin, it’s
very, very good.”
Other meats include the likes
of Brazilian sausage, chicken
breast wrapped in bacon, braised
beef ribs, filet mignon and alcatra,
another sirloin cut popular in
Brazil. Texas de Brazil sources
its meats from the Midwest, seasons
them in rock salt and cooks
them over an open flame using
charcoal.
“We let the meat speak for itself,”
Restrepo said. “What brings
a lot of flavor to the meats is going
to be the charcoal itself, so we
are using hardwood charcoal that
imparts a lot of the flavor.”
In addition to the buffet of
juicy and delectable meat, the
other main culinary component
is the salad area. With salad
dressings of ranch, blue cheese,
balsamic and Brazilian vinaigrettes,
and options like prosciutto,
salami, smoked salmon,
sliced tomato, capers, hearts of
palm, spring mix, couscous salad
and marinated artichoke hearts,
there is likely something for everyone.
“There are tons of items up
there,” Restrepo said of the salad
area. “For me, the first time, I
would really recommend trying
the lobster bisque soup that is
made fresh daily and is really,
really good.”
For those with a sweet tooth,
there is carrot cake, Brazilian
cheesecake, Key lime pie and
flan made in house and available
for an extra charge. A seasonal
passionfruit mousse ($8.75) also
available for the next two-anda-half
months, according to Restrepo.
“It is probably the lightest dessert
we have,” Restrepo said of
the mousse. “It is blended together
with a condensed milk,
and they whip it into a light
mousse that is really tasty, and
nice and light.”
In terms of drinks, Restrepo
said there are approximately 150
wines on the wine list, with 16-
17 of those available by the glass
and bottles going anywhere in
price from roughly $36-$400. A
collection from South American
and Californian vineyards await
the palates of those looking to try
something new.
“If you are just starting to
learn about wine, we’ll give
you samples of all wines by the
The salad area at Texas de Brazil is included in the fixed price of
admission and has a wide array of offerings, ranging from gourmet
artisan breads to imported cheeses, sushi and steamed asparagus.
glass,” Restrepo noted. “We help
educate our customers on wine.
Wine is a great thing to have
with the meats to make them a
little bit better.”
Craft cocktails include the
caipirinha, Brazil’s national
cocktail made with cachaca,
sugar and lime. It tastes like
something between a mojito and
margarita.
One recommendation Restrepo
gives to new diners is to go
to the Texas de Brazil website
and sign-up for the e-club, which
he said will give $20 off for a
first visit, as well as invitations
for special events and dinners at
the steakhouse. Between prime
cut meats, a focus on top-notch
the orland park prairie | April 25, 2019 | 21
get out of town!
Nashville a lot of live country, a little bit rock ’n’ bowl
Catch some tunes,
make sure to visit
the bathroom in
the Music City
Bill Jones, Editor
You’ve been on the road
nearly seven hours by the
time you reach Nashville,
unless you took a (recommended)
break in Louisville.
And the first thing
you need to do is visit the
bathroom.
Whether you need to
use the facilities or not is
beside the point. The Hermitage
Hotel has a men’s
bathroom that was remodeled
and reconfigured in
the 1930s, restored to its
original Art Deco scheme
at the request of both men
and women, according to
a plaque outside of it. It
has been featured in music
videos and purportedly has
hosted legislative deals.
There is a shoe shine station
and an old phone, and
the sinks, toilet bowls and
urinals are all mint green,
popping against the otherwise
black walls. The sign
says that color scheme has
encouraged as many women
as men to take a peek
inside, but it is an active
bathroom, so peek at your
own risk.
While you’re at the hotel,
the Oak Bar is worth
a visit. It features an extensive
(in the realm of a 130
bottles) Bourbon list that
goes well with its Prohibition-era
vibe. With that
pit stop out of the way, it’s
time to start truly exploring
the Music City.
Exploring Music City
Nashville is known for
its country music, and there
are, of course, the big tourist
attractions such as the
Grand Ole Opry, Ryman
Auditorium and, yes, a
replica of the Parthenon to
see. If you made the trip and
have the time, by all means
check them out. But if your
time is limited, it’s better
spent hopping bars at night
to catch live musicians.
Before we do, let’s get
one thing out of the way:
You don’t need to be a huge
country music fan to enjoy
Nashville. I’m not, but I
married one, and we both
had a lot of fun there. As
long as you appreciate live
music, the city offers it in a
volume and with an ease of
access I’ve seen nowhere
else.
Broadway serves as the
main strip just southwest of
the Cumberland River, but
that area can feel like the
main strips in the Wisconsin
Dells or Gatlinburg —
worth seeing but definitely
a tourist trap. There are
plenty of spots on offshoots
and even in other neighborhoods
that offer great music
minus the foot traffic.
No matter where you
decide to start, free music
will not be in short supply.
My recommendation:
Don’t plan. Stop in a joint
that looks like a good, has
the outdoor seating you’re
craving or beckons with the
Siren sounds you can’t resist.
Buy a drink and take in
a few songs. If you love it,
you found your spot for the
night. If you don’t? Start
walking until something
else catches your eyes and
ears. That’s the beauty of
Nashville in a bandshell.
When you’re done seeing
main drag, though, make
sure to check out the nearby
Rocket Fizz soda shop
for the wall of bottles and
an eclectic selection of candy.
And while the Johnny
The restored Art Deco of the men’s bathroom at the
Hermitage Hotel in Nashville makes it a must-visit pit
stop. Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
More music, more fun
Two things that thrill in
Louisville
The Workhouse
Ballroom: Otherwise
known as “The Cave”
or “Secret Cave,” it’s
literally a music hall
in a cave in the side
of a hill that looks like
something out of The
Shire from the outside
and brick barrel cellar
from the inside. I’ve
heard better sound,
Cash Museum looks small
from the outside, plenty of
cool memorabilia lines the
inside of the space, highlighted
by a wall of records,
a theater space and history
lessons focused on one of
the greats.
Sleep, drink, eat, repeat
When I visited a few
years back, I made the
Hutton Hotel my base
of operations. Though it
is a good couple of miles
from the riverfront, it sits
near Music Row and the
Vanderbilt campus, which
is a beautiful sight on the
but the ambiance here
makes it worth seeing
just about anything
once in this space.
Holy Grale: This
Unitarian Church
was built in the
Original Highlands
neighborhood in 1905.
Now, it features an
extensive beer list
with a solid focus on
Belgians, good food
and a nice outdoor
space when the
weather’s right.
way to the Pancake Pantry,
one of those unique
spots that makes standing
in a line feel almost fun,
and the reward is breakfast.
The hotel houses some musical
artifacts, such as the
handwritten Charlie Daniels
lyrics to “The Devil
Went Down to Georgia”
framed with a frayed bow
in the room where I stayed.
If you’re a food fanatic,
it also is close to The Catbird
Seat. While Nashville
is predominantly known
for its hot fried chicken and
other Southern favorites,
this upscale spot is perfect
for adventurous types.
Another Perspective
We asked readers on social media to share their favorite
spring break spots. They said…
“Anywhere I can go fishing. Lake
Michigan for salmon/trout; Atlantic
Ocean out of New York for striper,
shark or tuna; Lake Fork, Texas, and
upper Mississippi River for bass.”
—Jeff Wolfe, in reply to The Mokena Messenger
on Facebook
“Hawaii! Perfect weather all yearround.
Beautiful beaches. Whales
during spring break. Really is
paradise.”
—Lisa Witkowski, in response to The Orland
Park Prairie on Facebook
“Six Flags Hurricane Harbor for
the sunburnt suburban dads. Chasing
around a bunch of kids named
Cody.”
—James Hancock, in response to @TinleyJunc
tion
The U-shaped layout gives
everyone a view of the
kitchen action. And before
or after dinner, a drink at
the neighboring Patterson
House is highly recommended.
It offers a dimly
lit, pre-Prohibition craft
cocktail vibe — and has
house rules to help keep it
that way. Few nail the feel
like this place does.
But you promised rock
Before you leave town,
make sure to check out the
Third Man Records storefront.
Owned by The White
Stripes’ Jack White, it’s a
record store but also a bit of
a museum, complete with a
wax collectible machine. It
also has a live music space,
because this is Nashville.
Get out of Town! is a monthly
travel column focusing on
relatively local destinations
and activities, with helpful tips,
Outstanding new home values in Peotone can be yours At Westgate Manor
Distinctive Home Builders is building new homes from the low $200s
When it comes to a preferred location,
Peotone is a steadily growing
suburb with a strong infrastructure
and an irresistible small-town charm
with a bright future—which is why Distinctive
Home Builders chose the Will
County village for its newest community
of 38 single-family homes: Westgate
Manor.
“Peotone is a family-friendly village
just south of Chicago and is one
of the best kept secrets among new
home seekers,” said Bryan Nooner,
President of Distinctive Home Builders.
“We expect to attract home shoppers
from northwest Indiana and the
south suburban Chicago marketplace.
We will likely also see buyers from the
Kankakee area because the Peotone
school district is so desirable.”
Several factors attracted Distinctive
Home Builders to this hometown atmosphere
community, not the least of
which was its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 and easy access to I-80. Commuters
will enjoy several nearby train stations
and a mere 35-minute drive to
Chicago.
“It’s a vibrant, growing community

centers in the west and southwest suburbs
with impressive commercial and
industrial growth that has followed the
residential boom here,” said Nooner.

combined with lower construction
costs add up to savings when compared
to a similarly-equipped home in
the area,” added Nooner.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
With Jade Hamilton
Jade Hamilton is a junior
lacrosse player for the
Sandburg co-op team who
returned to the sport this
season after ACL surgery
and is also a bowler for
the Eagles.
Do you have any
college plans yet
and do they involve
lacrosse?
Yes, I want to go away
to school, pursue either
nursing, pre-med or health
sciences and play DII or
NAIA Lacrosse.
What is your proudest
moment in athletics?
Playing in the Brine National
Classic in 2017
Are there any
embarrassing
moments you had in
sports?
For bowling, one time
at a meet as I swung my
arm back to roll the ball it
slipped out of my hand and
hit the ground. It happens
more then you think, but
it makes a loud noise and
everyone looks at you.
Do you have a
favorite pregame
pump-up song?
“We Will Rock You” by
Queen.
Do you have a hero,
or someone you look
up to?
Probably my dad [Ron],
because he is a firefighter,
and when I injured my
knee he jumped from the
stands to run onto the field.
Is there something
people don’t know
about you?
I’m double-jointed, so
I can bend just the tips of
my fingers and bring my
thumb to my wrist.
Is there a TV show
that you could binge
watch over and over?
“Criminal Minds.” I
love the suspense, even
though I’m not really into
horror movies, but the
studies of people and their
minds interests me.
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
Any superstitions?
No, not really. My second
lucky number is actually
13.
If they made a movie
about your life, who
should play you?
Jennifer Lawrence, because
she is quirky and
funny — kind of like me
What would that
movie be called?
“Cut It Like Jade.” It’s
like “Bend It Like Beckham”
for two-fold reasoning
— lacrosse and an
ACL repair.
He opened some NFL
scouts’ eyes a little wider
in late February and early
March, during the NFL
Combine in Indianapolis.
At the time, some scouting
reports said that he did
not have NFL wide receiver
speed and might be
better suited as a tight end.
Those comments were
made moot at the combine,
when his 4.42-second time
in the 40-yard dash made
some jaws drop. That time,
combined with his impressive
vertical leap of 43 1/2
inches (the second-highest
jump in NFL Combine history)
and 11-foot, 8-inch
On the other hand, Rotoworld.com’s
Josh Norris
had Boykin 23rd on his
“NFL Big Board” with
only Butler, Brown and
Metcalf ahead of him at
that position.
Norris raved that Boykin
is “such a fluid mover for
his size. Has real potential
to win in both the big and
small receiver game. That
is not common.”
Boykin, who attended
Central Middle School in
Tinley Park and was a part
of the Tinley Park Bulldogs’
baseball and softball
programs, as well as the
Orland-based Jayhawks
teams growing up, nabbed
a team-high 59 passes for
Irish last season.

AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP
Sandburg gunning for another daily double in sectionals
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
It is not easy to win a
sectional title in baseball
or softball.
In Class 4A, only eight
teams in the state can accomplish
that in baseball
and another eight in softball.
So, when Sandburg won
sectional titles on the same
day on June 2, it was a
special accomplishment.
The baseball team went on
to finish fourth in the state,
and the Eagles softball
team suffered a walk-off
home run defeat in supersectional
action.
The fourth-seeded Eagles
baseball team knocked
off top-seeded Lincoln-
Way East in the sectional
semifinals on May 31 and
second-seeded Marist,
8-0, on June 2 to win the
Lockport Sectional title.
The Eagles softball team
stunned top-seeded Marist
9-8 in nine innings to win
the Hinsdale South Sectional.
Talk about a great
daily double.
Will there be that much
fun and excitement for
Sandburg’s teams in 2019?
That remains to be seen.
But the first step in building
up for the excitement
starts now as the sectional
assignments have been
announced by the Illinois
High School Association.
Lockport will host the
baseball sectional again,
and Sandburg is in the 21-
team field, which includes
Marist, Lincoln-Way East,
Lockport, Providence and
Andrew. The survivor of
this meat grinder heads
to the Springfield Supersectional
at Lincoln Land
Community College.
Marist hosts both the
softball sectional and supersectional
that Sandburg
is in.
The 20-team tournament
also features Mother
McAuley, Lyons and Riverside-Brookfield.
Regional action for both
sports begins May 20, sectional
play starts May 28
and the supersectionals are
June 3. The state semifinals
are June 7.
Sectional seedings are
scheduled to be announced
May 7.
Soccer team warms up
Sandburg’s baseball team, which was 7-6 through its first 13 games, hopes to make a big push in the postseason
at the Lockport Sectional. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
with Stagg win
Sandburg’s girls soccer
team warmed up for the
Naperville North Tournament
with a 5-0 victory
over District 230 rival
Stagg on April 16.
Bella Corkula, Ella
Hase, Maddie Manzke,
Arienne Monteclar and
Maggie Manthey scored
goals for the Eagles.
The 24-team Naperville
North event boasts that
since 1988, 27 teams won
the state championship the
year they competed in the
tournament. The Eagles
took a 10-1-1 mark into
the tournament and lost
to Neuqua Valley, 2-1, on
April 17 and dropped a 2-0
decision to Geneva on Saturday,
April 20.
The long run
Sandburg’s boys track
team finished third in the
12-team Tinley Park Titan
Relays on Thursday, April
18. The lone winning team
for the Eagles was the
6,400-meter team of Sean
Marquardt, Brock Brice,
Tommy Sieczkowski and
Ahmad Alhayek.
MVC stars
Southern Illinois University
won the Missouri
Valley Conference women’s
golf title recently
and former Sandburg star
Emilyee McGiles finished
eighth.
Bradley senior Frankie
Saban, another former
Eagles golfer, earned All-
MVC honors for the second
year in a row after
averaging 76.54 per 18-
hole round. She will leave
the Peoria school with the
sixth-best career average
of 77.83 in 105 rounds.
Boykin awaits ‘real excitement’ of NFL Draft
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Since Dec. 29, when
Notre Dame’s football
team lost to Clemson 30-3
in the Cotton Bowl, wide
receiver Miles Boykin has
been on a personal fulltime
internship.
The Providence Catholic
graduate who once led
the Orland Park-based
Windy City Magic basketball
team to a national title
in 2011, has been getting
his 6-foot-4, 220-pound
body NFL ready.
He is working on strength.
He has been working on
endurance.
He has been working out
for football teams including
the Bears.
“This isn’t anything different
from anyone with
an actual job,” Boykin
said. “That’s what it is to
me. It’s my job. Of course,
I love playing, but it’s an
eight-hour day. I train for
eight hours a day, and beyond
that there is recovery
and a diet that I have to
pay attention to. So, really,
I am doing something at
least eight hours a day to
make myself better.”
That hard work should
pay off this weekend. The
three-day NFL Draft begins
on Thursday, April
25, in Nashville. While
it is not an exact science,
there is speculation he
could go in one of the first
four rounds, and he has
heard he could go as high
as the second round.
If he gets the call, all of
the hard work he put in this
year will be worth it.
“It’s been a lot of work,”
Boykin said. “I think the
real excitement will come
Please see Boykin, 35
Providence graduate Miles Boykin will be anxiously
awaiting the results of the NFL Draft this weekend. He
could be picked in the top four rounds.
RedHawks from Orland swing for the fences at Wrigley
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Orland Park’s Jack Brannigan
said he had never before been to
Wrigley Field.
His first trip to historic park
that houses the Chicago Cubs,
however, will be one he will
never forget.
He was not in the stands
watching an exciting MLB game
involving the Cubs.
He was not watching a highpaid
baseball star hit for the cycle
or throw a no-hitter.
The stands were filled with
hundreds, not thousands.
But the infielder/pitcher who
is heading to Notre Dame to play
baseball next year and his Marist
teammates had the rare opportunity
to play at the park in a 12-2
loss to Nazareth in an East Suburban
Catholic Conference battle
on April 17.
Conor Kelly, Brian Ward and
Tristan Stefanos are other Orland
Park players on the roster
who had the opportunity to take
batting practice at the park. And
coach Kevin Sefcik, who also
lives in Orland Park, was a major
league player who returned to
the park and had some memories
of the place.
“You come down those stairs
[from the locker room] and you
wind through that tunnel, that
maze they have, to the dugout,”
he said. “Then you go into the
dugout, and then it’s pretty cool
when you are on the field. You
can feel the whole atmosphere
of the place. Batting practice is
awesome, because there is so
many people there.
“There are some cool parks
around the country, but that one
is pretty special, since I grew up
here.”
But to Brannigan, it was something
he would only see on TV.
He grew up a White Sox fan
and has seen home games on the
South Side, but never ventured
to Wrigley.
He hit three balls into the
Wrigley bleachers during his
batting practice session.
“The first one was awesome
being able to watch it go out,” he
said. “It clanked off the bleachers.
It’s something I’ll never forget.
“I grew up knowing this place
was pretty old. But I’m just
amazed at how amazing it still
looks. It might be a little bit better
than the one on the South
Side. That’s tough to admit.”
Ward scored some lower-level
left field seats for Game 5 of the
World Series in 2016 and can
brag that it was the only World
Series game the Cubs won since
the ballpark was named Wrigley
Field.
He also can brag that he took
some hacks at the plate at the
place.
“This is a big deal, thinking
about all of the players who
have played on this field,” he
said minutes after he had his
photo taken in an empty left field
bleacher area.
Stefanos is a Sox fan who was
making his second visit to Wrigley.
“I came to game when I was
younger,” he said. “It’s cool being
on the field and being able to
take BP.”
Kelly, who recently moved
from Oak Forest to Orland Park,
also enjoyed the experience.
“It was really great to see the
ball fly in a major league park,”
he said. “It was something different.
It’s something I will never
forget. I was close to hitting
one out.”
It has been an eventful season
for the RedHawks. In the preseason,
they were ranked No.
1 in the state by Prep Baseball
Report. They played a couple of
games at the USA Baseball National
Training Complex in Cary,
North Carolina. They had nine
of their first 20 games cancelled
because of the weather. They
won by scores of 13-0 and 11-1
and lost by scores of 10-4, 10-5
and the 12-2 league setback to
Nazareth and left-handed pitcher
East Suburban Catholic Conference contest.
Michael Prosecky, a Louisville
recruit who had a small army of
pro scouts sitting in seats behind
home plate.
A 6-5 record to start the season
was not what they were expecting.
“It’s been pretty much a whirlwind,”
Brannigan said. “We
made a lot of memories. We had
a lot of experiences that were really
cool. And for the rest of the
year, we’re going to just enjoy
it.”
Kelly said that this is still a
close-knit team, and the team
needs to play its best in May and
June during the playoffs.
“All it takes is putting seven
games together at the end of the
season,” Kelly said.

A FEW FACTS ABOUT
ORLAND PARK’S KEVIN
SEFCIK (ABOVE), WHO
COACHES MARIST
BASEBALL
1. Number, please
Sefcik had his
number, 5, retired
at Andrew High
School. He is also a
Hall of Famer at St.
Xavier University.
2. The draft
He was selected
by Philadelphia in
the 33rd round of
the MLB Draft, and
despite starting his
career buried in the
Phillies’ system,
he made his major
league debut two
years later.
3. Great ’98
The year of Sammy
Sosa and Mark
McGwire banging
out homers at a record
pace also saw
Sefcik have his best
season, as he hit
.314 in 104 games
in 1998.
Jeff Vorva
Sports Editor
There were 11
people inducted
into District 230’s
Legacy Hall on April 12.
Two of them were honored
posthumously.
The first of the 11 honored
was 1972 Stagg grad
Brian Baldea, who had
an impressive baseball
coaching resume at the
University of Chicago
and died in December
2017.
His son Anthony
bravely got up to the
microphone for a speech
in front of a few family
members and hundreds
of strangers, and the pain
of losing his father hit
him several times, as he
broke down crying and
composed himself before
continuing.
A few tables to the
right of the stage in the
banquet room at Silver
Lake Country Club sat
Jordan Cortez.
If anyone in the room
could understand what
Anthony was going
through, it was the junior
from Andrew High
School. Cortez also was
set to give a speech about
his father, Jerome, an
Orland Park native who
died of a heart attack on
June 2 at age 47.
“I saw that, and I
knew that when I talked
I would have to push
through it,” Jordan said.
“At first I thought I was
OK and I could do this.
Then, the first guy went
up there, and that heightened
up my nerves a little
bit.”
That is a tough task for
a high school student.
For some, it is terrifying
enough to give a speech
in class in front of 25 or
30 students. This was a
whole new game.
But Cortez — who
plays football, lacrosse
and is on the chess team
at Andrew — got through
his 2-minute, 46-second
tribute in fine fashion, as
he had some in the crowd
laughing and brought
some tears to the 20
friends and family members
who were there for
Jerome’s induction into
the Hall.
Jerome grew up in Orland
Park and graduated
from Andrew in 1990.
He was known around
the area for helping start
the Tinley Park Bulldogs
lacrosse program with
Ron Hallman and the
program is 170 strong
right now, according to
Jordan. Jerome’s main
job was a chief engineer
at Navistar, and he is
Jordan Cortez (middle, with tie) and some of the other 20 members of his group pose
after the Legacy Hall dinner at Silver Lake Country Club, where his father, Jerome,
was posthumously honored. JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
credited with designing
military vehicles that
protect military personnel
from roadside bombs and
attacks.
Jordan had a few funnies
for the crowd to start
the speech.
“He never did anything
for the praise, and the
extra attention that came
with it except for screaming
at the refs for calls
in my games,” he joked.
“He earned the nickname
‘T-Bolt Terror’ for
football. It was a mostly
self-proclaimed nickname,
and it got picked
up in a news article and it
just kind of stuck.”
But Jordan also got
down to the business of
praising his father and
concluded on a strong
note.
“My sisters [Lauren
and Hayden] and I will
strive to follow his amazing
examples, seeking
higher education, career
success and giving back
to our community,” Jordan
said.
This was the second
time Jordan spoke publicly
about his father.
Jordan gave Jerome’s
eulogy last year. This was
a little different, because
it was not all family and
friends.
“It was tough to relate
it to everybody, because
when you are talking to
people you know, you can
get a little more personal,”
Cortez said.
It has been a rough year
for Jerome’s wife, Cathy,
and the three children.
Jordan said there was
one thing Jerome taught
everyone that has helped
them try to get through
all of this.
“This whole year has
been about perseverance,”
Jordan said after
the speech. “That’s what
he taught me. Keep pushing
through. Not giving
up on anything. That’s
pretty much the word
that’s been in the back of
my head all year.”
LISTEN UP
“There are some cool parks around the country, but that one
is pretty special, since I grew up here.”
