• 26—VANGUARD, FRIDAY, APRIL 26, , 2019 AS the glorious month of Ramadan approaches, some Muslims are still in a state of unpreparedness. In this part of the world, many of us are used to the last minute rush and at the end, what we see is shoddy preparation. Ramadan is so popular that we don't depend on any media to inform us of its time. In fact, at the end of one, we start counting another. We thank Allah for sparing our lives to witness another Ramadan which comes in about 10 days from now. Against all odds, many of us still take the fire brigade approach, living undone what we ought to have finished long before now. Our preparation ought to have started some few months back and not now that the Ramadan is almost here. Giving some thought to the unique concerns that Muslims face during the month of Ramadan, it is pertinent first and foremost, to check our health status, make necessary corrections and get physically and medically ready for the exercise. Most importantly therefore, it is crucial, that Muslims take the time to check their health and other concerns before the month even starts. Moderation in eating: Some erroneously believe that a few weeks before Ramadan, they have to eat voraciously to make up for the period of Shaaban 21, 1440 A.H. As Ramadan glides in fasting. This is antithetical to the teachings of the Prophet. One hadith says: “No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.” (Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasaa’I, Ibn Majah ) Besides, by controlling what we eat now, it will help us a great deal in our quest for sound health and enable us to worship more everyday during Ramadan. Change your sleeping habit: If you are an individual who is used to sleeping throughout the night, it may be wise to change your sleeping patterns in order to ensure that you don’t miss your suhoor as well as attaining the benefit of Qiyaamul-Layl. Control your tongue and character: We must start controlling our tongues now. Bad habit cannot be controlled overnight. We must make a start now so that by the time Ramadan comes, we would have achieved the necessary changes in our manners and characters. Let us begin to feel that Ramadan is here and ensure that everything we do falls within what is permitted during the month. Dua/Supererogatory prayers: Endeavour to always perform some supererogatory prayers, (nafil). We should start now by observing all the daily supererogatory prayers. This will enable us to get accustomed to observing the Sunnah and Nafils in Ramadan and even increase them during the month. By increasing our voluntary worship, we can also give more attention and concentration to our regular daily salat and thus, gain closeness to Allah. Making Dua: What better time than now to get into the habit of regular communication with Allah through Dua. By the time Ramadan arrives, we would have already gotten into the habit of making the long and intense dua during this blessed month especially while fasting and in the latter part of the night during Tahajjud. Charity: Ramadan is a time for generosity and giving. It is a time we think about the less privileged and also show gratitude to Allah for everything He has given us. Ramadan is a blessed month, and the rewards for charity are multiple. Therefore, we should set aside part of our wealth to fulfil this act of ibadaah. It will not be nice if we are caught in the web of ill-preparation and found wanting in this profitable act. We pray Allah to give us the grace to witness this forthcoming Ramadan, observe it and grant us the strength and ability to maximise the rewards therein. O’ Allah save us from the punishment of the hereafter. Happy Juma'at — Dr Adewale Adeeyo, OON NASFAT set t to build capacity of teachers, members IN line with fulfilling one of its shared values, a faith-based organisation, Nasrul Lahi L Fatih Society, NASFAT has invited academic scholars to train its school teachers and secretaries on leadership and capacity building methodology. The event will be held as part of the activities to mark its 4th Annual Education Week holding from 21st to 28th April 2019. Facilitators from higher institutions of learning will take the participants through various ways of developing their s<strong>kill</strong>s, gaining control of the class and carrying every student along in the class. The lead speaker, Prof. Femi Saibu of Economics Department of the University of Lagos will be speaking on the main theme of the Week: Education, Tool for Sustainable Growth and Development. The Education Secretary, NASFAT, Dr. Rahmat Adetutu Adisa said that as part of the celebration, her team shall visit selected Juvenile Centres in Nigeria and donate gift items and other useful materials to the Homes. Students from both public and private schools will also be participating in Quranic and Quiz competitions; and they shall be tested on Mathematics, English Language, Quantitative & Verbal Reasoning, Knowledge of Computer and General Knowledge. The schools shall also partake in project exhibition where they will display their projects. The semi-final and grand finale of the various competitions will hold in Lagos State Secretariat Mosque's Multipurpose Hall and Combo Hall at Lagos Television (LTV) Agidingbi Lagos respectively. Other invited speakers at the event are the Programme Designer & CEO, Scorpiosis Centre for Leadership Values, Dr. Kayode Olusunmade and a lecturer in the Dept. of Engineering & Technology, University of Ilorin, Engr. Islamic body donates borehole to inmates in Ogun BY DAUD OLATUNJI AN Islamic organisation, Sebilunajat Concept has urged Muslims and other Nigerians to continue to show kindness to inmates and the less privileged. The Chief Executive Officer of Sebilunajat Concept, Sheikh Ahmad Olanrewaju stated this in Abeokuta while donating a borehole for inmates at Ibara prison in Abeokuta, Ogun State recently. He said the goal of the organisation was to assist the less privileged, adding that the organisation had spent millions of naira on the construction of the borehole for the inmates. He added that the Islamic body would go to other prisons across the country to do the same. He said: “The essence of our organisation is to assist people. We organise lectures and charity for the people. “We have spent millions of naira on what we have done. We get our funds from Nigerian Muslims all over the world to assist the less privileged. “We are not stopping here, we are still going to different prisons across the country to do something meaningful for them and that is what this association stands for." In his remarks, the Comptroller, Nigeria Prison Service, Ogun State Command, Abolade Benson, expressed gratitude to the Islamic body for rendering assistance to the inmates. Benson who was represented by CSP Jeremiah Haruna stressed that the Prison Service relies on religious bodies for spiritual development of the inmates. “The inmates have no ability to help themselves in this situation and that’s why we rely on people’s assistance. We are relying on good spirited people like this to assist us.”

Redefine our varsities’ curriculum now — Ojelade ...As Anwar-ul Islam holds 103rd conference THE National President, Anwar-ul- Islam Movement of Nigeria, Barrister Mubashir Ojelade has called on government and stakeholders in the education sector to redefine the curriculum of universities in the country with a view to making them specialise in specific areas. Barrister Ojelade stated this during the opening session of the Movement’s 103rd annual conference themed: Muslim organisations and the development of education in Nigeria held at Anwar-ul- Islam Model College Oniwaya, Agege, Lagos recently. Ojelade argued that making the universities to specialise in specific areas would produce better products, easy and effective management of the universities. “Government and stakeholders in the education sector should look critically at tertiary education. We need to redefine our objectives in that sector by looking at the curricula of all the universities and redefine them with a view to focusing more on technology. “The redefinition, in fact, should make universities specialise in particular areas rather than have university offering every course. We can narrow down their specialisations. I like to see the university of heath sciences, universities of engineering and technology, university of legal and management studies. Once our universities handle specific areas, they will be very proficient and they will hand out better product. They will be easily managed too because when you specialise, the manpower and every other thing will be limited. “All we are trying to emphasise is that education is very important and key to the society and to the world at large. So, focusing on the development of education in Nigeria and the role of Muslim organisations, we are looking back to see in what ways Muslim organisations have impacted in the education sector in the country, and the role played by the founding fathers of this Movement. Also, look at the challenges we are facing for the future and what solutions can we proffer against the challenges,” Ojelade stated. On the forthcoming Ramadan, he advised Muslims THE National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON on Wednesday held a one-day national training workshop for Hajj managers in Nigeria. The workshop which held at JEMY’s Plaza, Plot 48, Justice Dahiru Mustapha Road Farm Center, Kano, was themed: Towards Achieving Acceptable Hajj. Participants included chief executives of state pilgrims’ welfare boards, NAHCON zonal coordinators, chief executives and staff of private tour operators among others. The training was meant to sensitize participants on to be mentally, psychologically and materially prepared for the month of fasting. Be Godfearing, kind to people and observe all the ibadaah in the glorious month. The Chief Imam of Lagos, who was represented by Alhaji Shakur Gafar urged the organisation to consider the establishment of university of science and technology. “You are our pride. You are the first Muslim organisation to have established schools in Nigeria and taken education as your core area of dawah. I urge you never to relent. I also want you to consider the establishment of University of Science and Technology. I also urge the wealthy among you to sponsor indigent children in various levels of their education. We can all use our positions to develop the youth through education sponsorship,” he said. NAHCON trains Hajj managers important matters pertaining to 2019 Hajj which intending pilgrims need to know. Apart from subjects on Hajj rites, participants were trained on civic responsibilities of the pilgrim such as airport protocol, criteria on guarantor and its consequences, penalties of breaching Saudi Arabian regulations and merits of abiding by them. MIC holds pre-Ramadan lecture, free medical test A religious organisation, Misbaudeen Islamic Centre, MIC, is set to hold the 7th edition of its yearly pre-Ramadan lecture on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Jubril Martins Memorial High School, Iloro-Agege, Lagos. Managing Director, Silver Feeds Limited, Alhaji Musbaudeen Bolarinwa, who is the chief host said there would be free medical screening on Sunday, April 21, as part of the7th Ramadan lecture in preparation for Ramadan. He added that the event scheduled to start by 9am will be chaired by Prof. Kamil Oloso of the University of Ibadan. The Chief Imam, University of Lagos Muslim Community, Associate Professor Ismail Musa will deliver lecture on Achieving Socio-Political Development Through Moral Re- Orientation: Islamic Perspectives, while Ustaz Sulaiman Adangba will speak on The Efficacy of The Glorious Quran As a Book of Life. Senior Assistant Registrar and Imam, Yaba College of Technology, Ustaz Saeed Salman, is expected to deliver another lecture titled: Maximising The Month of Ramadan For Here and Hereafter. Alhaji Bolarinwa urged Muslims to take advantage of the lecture to prepare themselves spiritually, emotionally, physically and healthwise for the coming Ramadan. Bolarinwa said the theme has been carefully chosen in view of the developments and challenges in our society. “The public lecture is meant to prepare Muslims towards having a perfect and acceptable fasting experience during the glorious month in line with the dictates of the Quran and the sunnah of our noble prophet, Muhammad (SAW).”
