There’s need for Igbo, Yoruba
to work together —Ohanaeze
By Chioma
Gabriel
APEX Igbo sociocultural
organisation,
Ohanaeze Ndigbo
yesterday agreed with the
reverred Ooni of Ife that
Igbos and Yorubas are
brothers but disgreed that
Igbos are from Ile-Ife.
Spokesman of
Ohanaeze, Chuks Ibegbu
in a statement yesterday
said, “both ethnic groups
have linguistic and cultural
relationship deeper than
most people know. I salute
the great Ooni of Ife for that
revelation. However, Igbos
are not from Ile Ife but lived
there for years as part
owners with the Yorubas
until pressures and other
factors led to their
migration to the other parts
of Nigeria .
“Igbos came to Ile Ife from
the Bantu region and
Middle East several
centuries ago like the
Yorubas too. So, they have
common inheritance, hence
the inter-relation in
language and culture
between the two most
cerebral African races. Igbo
and Yoruba historians,
linguists and cultural
activists now have a
window to research and dig
into history to bring the
details for posterity.
“The Ajie festival in
Yoruba land and the Igbo
Day festival in Igbo land
should be opportunity for
Ndigbo and Ndi Yoruba to
heighten their indubitable
brother hood. Our reverred
Obi of Onitsha in concert
with other key Igbo
traditional rulers should in
concert with Ohanaeze
Ndigbo partner with Ooni
of Ife, key Yoruba traditional
rulers and Afenifere to
deepen this brotherhood for
posterity. We indeed salute
the Great Ooni of Ife. the
lion of Yoruba land , the reincarnation
of the great
gods of Yoruba land and a
great brother of Ndigbo.”
NOPRIN, Okechukwu
Nwanguma, has revealed
that between November
2018 and April 2019,
organisation recorded 15
cases of alleged <strong>police</strong>
Nwanguma disclosed this
during a public hearing on
Police brutality, corruption
and abuse, by NOPRIN in
Imo State.
He noted that the ugly
incidents were as a result
of reckless abuse of fire
Association of Nigeria,
OMPALAN, Delta State
chapter.
In the event which took
place at Wellington Hotel,
Effurun, Warri, Delta State,
Owamah told OMPALAN
members and other
participants that mining
and other extractive
industries were among the
most destructive activities
on the planet, especially for
indigenous and farming
communities.
He noted that because
the minerals, metals, fuel,
and timber the mining
industries seek are very
profitable, resisting them
requires hard work.
Owamah charged
OMPALAN to know that at
stake is the cultural survival
and well-being of their
communities,
environment, and ability to
make a living now and for
years to come.
Owamah told the
participants that the three
stages of mining
operations; prospecting,
exploration and
exploitation all cause
serious negative
environmental, social and
health impacts to host
communities.
public outrage has reached
a crescendo over the
escalating spate of <strong>police</strong>
extrajudicial <strong>kill</strong>ings and
abuse of power.
“Indeed, <strong>police</strong>
extrajudicial <strong>kill</strong>ings in
Nigeria have assumed
epidemic proportion.
Between November 2018
and April 2019, we have
documented no less than 15
cases of <strong>police</strong> <strong>kill</strong>ings
across the country from
reckless abuse of fire<strong>arms</strong>.”
He recalled some of the
tragic events which the
<strong>police</strong> were involved,
saying: “Nigerias woke up
on Sunday April 14,2019 to
the tragic news of two more
casualties of <strong>police</strong> brutality
in Lagos in one day. That
brought it to not less than
six in less than one month
alone, the number of cases
of citizens <strong>kill</strong>ed in Lagos
by trigger-happy <strong>police</strong>
officers through reckless
and inexplicable <strong>misuse</strong> of
fire<strong>arms</strong>. In 2018, two
young women were <strong>kill</strong>ed
in Abuja, one, just a day to
her passing out from
NYSC.
“Within two weeks after
the tragic <strong>kill</strong>ings of young
Kolade Johnson on March
31 by a member of a <strong>police</strong>
team from the notorious anti
cultism unit of Lagos State
<strong>police</strong> command, and while
the outrage that greeted
that <strong>kill</strong>ing was yet to
subside, another <strong>police</strong>man
under the same Lagos State
<strong>police</strong> command shot a
young man and his young
female partner, Adaobi
Ojide, instantly <strong>kill</strong>ing the
young woman.”
It was at this point that
he commended the
Nigeria Bar Association,
Owerri branch on how they
tackled the demolition of
Ekeukwu Owerri market,
an incident which led to the
death of a teenager, named
Somtochukwu, reportedly
<strong>kill</strong>ed by a stray bullet.
The NOPRIN national
cordinator said: “The NBA
Owerri branch has been
our longstanding ally in
the struggle for the defence
and promotion of human
rights in Imo State.
“In September 2017, the
Owerri branch gathered to
deliberate on and adopt a
common front to respond to
the illegal demolition of
Ekeukwu market, Owerri
which resulted to the tragic
waste of precious human
lives and destruction and
loss of wares and means of
livelihood of fellow
citizens.”
