OLD OYO NATIONAL PARK: is a unique park<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g the other parks in Nigeria. Apart from the<br />

preservati<strong>on</strong> of flora and fauna resources the park is<br />

highly blessed with historical features. The park takes<br />

its name from Oyo-lle (Old Oyo), the ancient political<br />

capital of Oyo Empire of the Yoruba people, and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tains the ruins of this city, the park had been in<br />

existence in the past as two game reserves- the upper<br />

Ogun games reserve and the Oyo Ile games reserve.<br />

The Oyo Ile game reserve was the aband<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

site of old Oyo Empire where the present day Oyo<br />

came from. The Oyo people settled down in so<br />

many places before they got to the present Oyo<br />

town. “One of those places is Oyo ile which falls<br />

within the park today. It is the largest<br />

c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of archaeological and cultural sites<br />

that c<strong>on</strong>tain more than twenty of the identified<br />

relics. One will be struck by the hosts of cultural<br />

artefacts that litter the sites like grinding st<strong>on</strong>es;<br />

earthen pots potsherds; snags, snail shells; mud<br />

walls; mound of ashes and charcoals that are still<br />

discernible with the aband<strong>on</strong>ed old settlement till<br />

date. The walls called the Koso defence wall were<br />

built around the city of old Oyo-Ile; it is about 6.5ft<br />

high and they made holes <strong>on</strong> it where they spy <strong>on</strong><br />

those coming in . The wall made with mud is still<br />

standing till date right from 16th c.<br />

We are training over 5,000 youths to develop tourism potential — O<strong>on</strong>i of Ife<br />

The O<strong>on</strong>i of Ife, Oba Enitan<br />

Ogunwusi, <strong>on</strong> Wednesday said<br />

that no fewer than 5,000 youths were<br />

currently being trained to develop<br />

tourism potential in Ile Ife and make<br />

them financially independent.<br />

the revenue base of Ekiti State<br />

through Tourism, the Director<br />

General of the State Arts and<br />

Culture, Wale Ojo-Lanre , hinted<br />

during the week that the state<br />

government would acquire all local<br />

festivals being celebrated in some<br />

towns and give it nati<strong>on</strong>al and<br />

internati<strong>on</strong>al exposure.<br />

The Director General said this<br />

when playing host to Ogun Onire<br />

Carnival Forum, a committee set up<br />

by Ire Ekiti for the 2019 editi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the Ogun Onire Festival slated for<br />

August in his office .<br />

Ojo-Lanre expressed regret that<br />

many of the deities that were of great<br />

significance in Ekiti like Ogun and<br />

The O<strong>on</strong>i of Ife, represented by Oba<br />

Adebanjo Adenini, Asoja of Isoja in Ife<br />

Kingdom, disclosed this during the<br />

2019 Tourism Innovati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

Development Advantage c (TIDA)<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference.<br />

Osun, but were relegated and<br />

neglected, were veritable sources<br />

of income in other states of the<br />

federati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

He said the administrati<strong>on</strong> of Dr<br />

Kayode Fayemi was committed to<br />

the promoti<strong>on</strong> of those sites that<br />

were regarded as being historical<br />

and strategic to the existence of any<br />

town.<br />

“Ogun was a deity that had<br />

become so popular in Yoruba race<br />

and other climes. And if you look at<br />

the myth around it, it has<br />

significance c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with Ire<br />

Ekiti people, but not much has been<br />

d<strong>on</strong>e to improve the festival the way<br />

Ondo people were doing .<br />

“ According to history, the Osun<br />

Osogbo originated from Igede Ekiti<br />

but we could all attest to the milli<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The theme of the c<strong>on</strong>ference is:<br />

“Impact of Sustainable Tourism<br />

Development and Marketing of<br />

Tourism Destinati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> Host<br />

Communities” held at the Nigerian<br />

Institute of Internati<strong>on</strong>al Affairs (NIIA),<br />

of naira being made annually<br />

through Osun groove and its<br />

celebrati<strong>on</strong> by Osun government .<br />

“That is why we have a law that<br />

had empowered the state to acquire,<br />

protect, project and market local<br />

festivals and deities of interest to<br />

promote our culture and make<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ey for our dear state.<br />

“If you look at Ogun festival,<br />

people <strong>on</strong>ly paid obeisance to a man<br />

who did well for the people , there<br />

was nothing fetish about it and other<br />

mythical festivals we are holding to<br />

celebrate our past heroes”.<br />

The Director General added that<br />

it would seek the collaborati<strong>on</strong>s of<br />

the towns where the deities are<br />

located and corporate organisati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

to achieve the task.<br />

Ogunwusi said that this was embarked <strong>on</strong><br />

due to his passi<strong>on</strong> for tourism development<br />

in the country and to ensure tourism has<br />

positive impact <strong>on</strong> community members.<br />

“Two years ago, I built the Ife Grand Resort,<br />

thereby creating over 2,000 jobs.<br />

“I am currently training 5,000<br />

youths in Ile-Ife <strong>on</strong> embracing<br />

tourism businesses to make a<br />

good number of youths self<br />

reliant and independent.<br />

“The training started in<br />

January and it will last six<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths to complete.<br />

“With all the innovati<strong>on</strong>s in my<br />

mind, nothing is impossible to<br />

achieve, I am fully ready to listen<br />

to the youth.<br />

urged Nigerians to groom<br />

tourism potential within their<br />

local communities.<br />

He said this would have<br />

great impact <strong>on</strong> the community<br />

members, boost the ec<strong>on</strong>omy of<br />

the community and the country<br />

at large.<br />

Carnival Forum, Chief Femi Ajayi,<br />

appealed to the government to help<br />

in rehabilitating the Ogun groove<br />

in Ire Ekiti before the 2019<br />

celebrati<strong>on</strong> slated for August.<br />

Ajayi said the the town was<br />

particularly happy that the<br />

government had taken over the<br />

locati<strong>on</strong> where the groove was<br />

situated , saying developing the site<br />

to an internati<strong>on</strong>al standard would<br />

help the drive to promote the festival<br />

to nati<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

standard.<br />

“We are not going to leave the<br />

festival to government al<strong>on</strong>e to<br />

promote, we are ready to collaborate,<br />

because our local ec<strong>on</strong>omy will<br />

witness a radical change when<br />

tourists are trooping in the be part<br />

of the celebrati<strong>on</strong>”, he said<br />

According to him, this will<br />

also raise the standard of living<br />

for women in the communities,<br />

reduce c<strong>on</strong>flict, crime rate,<br />

menace of area boys.<br />

He said that it would also<br />

improve financial<br />

independence, exposure to<br />

different cultures and attract<br />

more investors.<br />

“Our major problem in Africa<br />

is that we are <strong>on</strong>ly interested in<br />

grooming that sector of our<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omy which yields<br />

immediate gain.
