OLD OYO NATIONAL PARK: is a unique park
among the other parks in Nigeria. Apart from the
preservation of flora and fauna resources the park is
highly blessed with historical features. The park takes
its name from Oyo-lle (Old Oyo), the ancient political
capital of Oyo Empire of the Yoruba people, and
contains the ruins of this city, the park had been in
existence in the past as two game reserves- the upper
Ogun games reserve and the Oyo Ile games reserve.
The Oyo Ile game reserve was the abandoned
site of old Oyo Empire where the present day Oyo
came from. The Oyo people settled down in so
many places before they got to the present Oyo
town. “One of those places is Oyo ile which falls
within the park today. It is the largest
concentration of archaeological and cultural sites
that contain more than twenty of the identified
relics. One will be struck by the hosts of cultural
artefacts that litter the sites like grinding stones;
earthen pots potsherds; snags, snail shells; mud
walls; mound of ashes and charcoals that are still
discernible with the abandoned old settlement till
date. The walls called the Koso defence wall were
built around the city of old Oyo-Ile; it is about 6.5ft
high and they made holes on it where they spy on
those coming in . The wall made with mud is still
standing till date right from 16th c.
We are training over 5,000 youths to develop tourism potential — Ooni of Ife
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan
Ogunwusi, on Wednesday said
that no fewer than 5,000 youths were
currently being trained to develop
tourism potential in Ile Ife and make
them financially independent.
By Rotimi Ojomoyela
Ado Ekiti-In a bid to shore up
the revenue base of Ekiti State
through Tourism, the Director
General of the State Arts and
Culture, Wale Ojo-Lanre , hinted
during the week that the state
government would acquire all local
festivals being celebrated in some
towns and give it national and
international exposure.
The Director General said this
when playing host to Ogun Onire
Carnival Forum, a committee set up
by Ire Ekiti for the 2019 edition of
the Ogun Onire Festival slated for
August in his office .
Ojo-Lanre expressed regret that
many of the deities that were of great
significance in Ekiti like Ogun and
The Ooni of Ife, represented by Oba
Adebanjo Adenini, Asoja of Isoja in Ife
Kingdom, disclosed this during the
2019 Tourism Innovations and
Development Advantage c (TIDA)
conference.
Osun, but were relegated and
neglected, were veritable sources
of income in other states of the
federation.
He said the administration of Dr
Kayode Fayemi was committed to
the promotion of those sites that
were regarded as being historical
and strategic to the existence of any
town.
“Ogun was a deity that had
become so popular in Yoruba race
and other climes. And if you look at
the myth around it, it has
significance connection with Ire
Ekiti people, but not much has been
done to improve the festival the way
Ondo people were doing .
“ According to history, the Osun
Osogbo originated from Igede Ekiti
but we could all attest to the millions
The theme of the conference is:
“Impact of Sustainable Tourism
Development and Marketing of
Tourism Destinations on Host
Communities” held at the Nigerian
Institute of International Affairs (NIIA),
of naira being made annually
through Osun groove and its
celebration by Osun government .
“That is why we have a law that
had empowered the state to acquire,
protect, project and market local
festivals and deities of interest to
promote our culture and make
money for our dear state.
“If you look at Ogun festival,
people only paid obeisance to a man
who did well for the people , there
was nothing fetish about it and other
mythical festivals we are holding to
celebrate our past heroes”.
The Director General added that
it would seek the collaborations of
the towns where the deities are
located and corporate organisations
to achieve the task.
The Chairman of the Ogun Onire
Victoria Island, Lagos.
Ogunwusi said that this was embarked on
due to his passion for tourism development
in the country and to ensure tourism has
positive impact on community members.
“Two years ago, I built the Ife Grand Resort,
thereby creating over 2,000 jobs.
“I am currently training 5,000
youths in Ile-Ife on embracing
tourism businesses to make a
good number of youths self
reliant and independent.
“The training started in
January and it will last six
months to complete.
“With all the innovations in my
mind, nothing is impossible to
achieve, I am fully ready to listen
to the youth.
Dr Wanle Akinboboye,
Managing Director, La
Campagne Tropicana Resort,
urged Nigerians to groom
tourism potential within their
local communities.
He said this would have
great impact on the community
members, boost the economy of
the community and the country
at large.
Carnival Forum, Chief Femi Ajayi,
appealed to the government to help
in rehabilitating the Ogun groove
in Ire Ekiti before the 2019
celebration slated for August.
Ajayi said the the town was
particularly happy that the
government had taken over the
location where the groove was
situated , saying developing the site
to an international standard would
help the drive to promote the festival
to national and international
standard.
“We are not going to leave the
festival to government alone to
promote, we are ready to collaborate,
because our local economy will
witness a radical change when
tourists are trooping in the be part
of the celebration”, he said
•Ooni of Ife
According to him, this will
also raise the standard of living
for women in the communities,
reduce conflict, crime rate,
menace of area boys.
He said that it would also
improve financial
independence, exposure to
different cultures and attract
more investors.
“Our major problem in Africa
is that we are only interested in
grooming that sector of our
economy which yields
immediate gain.
