All about Cinco De <strong>May</strong>o!<br />
Cinco de <strong>May</strong>o means “the fifth of <strong>May</strong>.” Cinco de <strong>May</strong>o is the anniversary<br />
of a battle that took place between the Mexicans and the French in 1862.<br />
• The battle is known as the Battle of Puebla and it celebrates Mexico’s<br />
victory over the French. It also marks a turning point in Mexican national<br />
pride. The victory made the Mexican people very happy and helped create<br />
a feeling of national unity. • While Cinco de <strong>May</strong>o is a national holiday in<br />
Mexico, it is mainly observed in the state capital of Puebla. However, in<br />
the United States, it is becoming a popular holiday to celebrate Mexican<br />
culture. • The largest Cinco de <strong>May</strong>o event in the world is held in Los<br />
Angeles, California, where more than 600,000 people celebrate with music<br />
and food. The whole event is called Festival de Fiesta Broadway. • There<br />
aren’t any specific foods associated with Cinco de <strong>May</strong>o, but traditional<br />
Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, burritos, guacamole and tacos<br />
are popular. • The Mexican flag is green, white and red. The traditional<br />
meaning is thought to be that green = hope and the independence<br />
movement; white = purity and religion and red = Spain and union. The<br />
emblem in the middle consists of an eagle and a snake, based on an Aztec<br />

• Originally called Decoration Day<br />
• Memorial Day Holiday was officially proclaimed on <strong>May</strong> 5, 1868 by<br />
General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the<br />
Republic<br />
• Memorial Day first observed on <strong>May</strong> 30, 1868<br />
• Congress changed the observed Memorial Day date in 1968 to the last<br />
Monday in <strong>May</strong> to ensure a three day weekend.<br />
Formal Observance of Memorial Day:<br />
• Wear a red poppies on Memorial day to honor those who died serving<br />
the United States during war<br />
• At 3 PM local time on Memorial Day, Americans should pause for a<br />
moment of silence or listen to “Taps”<br />
• Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of veterans for<br />
Memorial Day<br />

• Attend a Memorial Day parade to honor fallen heroes<br />
