Nigeria's justice system has failed
women —BFF
By Emmanuel
Elebeke
ABUJA—A
nongovernmental
organization, Breath of
Freedom Foundation, BFF
has accused the Nigerian
justice system as being
unfair to the women folk.
The foundation made the
assertion at the weekend
during an outreach
programme at Suleja
prison.
The Founder of the
foundation, Tony Ekoaba,
who decried the nation's
justice system expressed
concern over the manner in
which widows in the
country are sent to prison
for trying to assert authority
over properties willed to
them by their late
husbands. A situation he
said is supported by some
traditions and culture in the
country.
This he said is injustice
to women and should be
condemned in totality,
especially widows who
lawfully seek what rightfully
belong to them
Ekoaba, who was
represented by other
management team of the
foundation called for total
overhaul of the entire
justice system in the
country to address the
injustice in the land,
especially as it concerns
women and the will left
behind by their late
husbands.
‘‘I think the laws need to
be changed, they need to
be in black and white and
straight forward. If a person
puts one as next of kin, that
person should be next of
kin. There should just be a
standard justice system that
would just be there based
on if you are not as
powerful as the opposition
party, then you have to be
on the receiving end.
