May 2019

From the Pastor
Dear Church family,
I hope you've all heard by now that May 19 we are having a special Combined Worship Service at 11am
followed by a Picnic out at the Hwy 61 Property to celebrate our 175th anniversary.
As it happens, in the United Methodist Church, May 19th is also known as "Heritage Sunday", so it is a great
time for us to be celebrating our heritage as well.
On Heritage Sunday we remember the preaching of John Wesley, the Hymns of Charles Wesley, which
highlight the important beliefs and priorities of Methodists. On Heritage Sunday we remember the clergy and
laity, the men and women who have worked, prayed, and struggled to live faithful lives, to pass along the faith
to the next generation, to build up the Church, and to help people discover the salvation from sin and eternal
life that Jesus alone brings.
None of us would be here today without the efforts of our forebears in the faith, and this is a great time to
celebrate and remember those who came before, to give thanks for the gifts they've passed down to us, and
also to remember our obligation to faithfully pass that faith on to others.
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless and keep you+
-Rev. Daniel
The founder of the Methodist movement. John Wesley (1703-1791) was born at Epworth,
England, the son of a Church of England clergyman. He was graduated from Christ College,
Oxford, England. In 1738 he had an intense religious experience at a meeting on Aldersgate
Street, London. Following this he began to preach throughout the country. He was a prolific preacher and writer, and
his writings provided a core of standard doctrine and interpretation to guide the new Methodist movement. In 1784,
he sent instructions to America for the formation of a separate Methodist church for the United States.
