Jahrbuches!
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen
The goal of sustainable growth in global air traffic poses
ever greater challenges for the aviation industry. These
challenges cannot, as in the past 50 years, be solved by
continuous technological progress alone. Disruptive technologies,
on the other hand, require increased expenditure
and entail major risks.
New technological concepts such as electrification,
autonomous flying, artificial intelligence, and connectivity
make new vehicles and services possible and open up
new markets, such as urban air mobility. At the same
time, digitalisation and Industry 4.0 are driving a farreaching
transformation of companies.
In these more complex and innovative times, it is
increasingly difficult for aerospace companies to prioritise
their technology, product, and business strategies, and
thus make important decisions about the use of limited
resources.
A think tank like Bauhaus Luftfahrt with its competence
and its ability to integrate new technological
approaches in a holistic and interdisciplinary way can
provide valuable decision support for companies and
institutions with studies, simulations, scenarios, and
technology impact analyses. With a conscious look into
other business and research areas, promising trends
and technologies are to be identified at an early stage
and evaluated in the aviation context. In this way, new
possibilities and potentials can be realised and cooperation
in the development of disruptive technologies can
be accelerated.
Two special chapters of this Yearbook are devoted to
the research topics “Urban Air Mobility” (pages 14 to 21)
and “Digital Transformation in Aviation” (pages 28 to 33).
In addition, this year’s issue once again provides you
with unique insights into the future of aviation. I hope
you enjoy reading this special Yearbook!
Liebe Luftfahrtbegeisterte
Dear Aviation Enthusiasts
In an increasingly global world, aviation takes a very important
role in shaping the mobility of tomorrow. While the
“classic” air transport system faces immense challenges
to meet the continuously growing demand in a sustainable
manner, while drastically reducing its ecological footprint,
new technologies are enabling the extension of air mobility
in completely new application areas.
Growing urbanisation is fostering the demand for
efficient mobility concepts between and also within urban
areas. While the team of Bauhaus Luftfahrt already in
2016 established the CentAirStation, a possible solution
for a highly efficient air transport system for city-to-city air
travel directly from the heart of the city, actual research is
increasingly focused on inner-urban air mobility. Within this
yearbook, a dedicated emphasis is being placed on technologies
and solutions featuring urban air mobility, providing
information about the key interrelations and challenges.
Besides urban mobility, the search and identification
of technologies, concepts, and business models to improve
the air transport’s efficiency are at the centre of research
at Bauhaus Luftfahrt. To achieve the targets of Flightpath
2050 as well as to actively contribute to the long-term
climate goals are the key drivers for this research. This is
why alternative fuel options, novel propulsion, energy,
and aircraft concepts as much as radical operational and
business models are under scrutiny. A major foundation
for this research provides the Bauhaus Luftfahrt internal
Technology Radar as well as the trend monitor, where
promising research is identified and evaluated in the context
of aviation.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt also evolved organisationally in
2018. With the return of Insa Ottensmann to the aviation
industry, the governance structure of the research institution
has been adopted, leading to a single Executive Director
heading the organisation in the future.
The large bandwidth of technologies and options for
the future of aviation shall be brought to you by this yearbook.
We wish you, dear readers, insightful impulses; enjoy
reading!
gelungen, synthetisches „solares“ Kerosin herzustellen.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt had its own booth at ILA Berlin – the most innovative trade event
for the aerospace industry – from April 25th to 29th, 2018. Once again, the futurologists
from Munich had a lot of innovative food for thought and discussion in their
luggage, which has the potential to fundamentally change the air transport system.
On 43 square metres, the think tank not only presented its own technological concepts
and operational solutions, but also provided scientific answers to the central
future questions of aviation. Bauhaus Luftfahrt was also breaking new ground with
its booth concept: The focus was on a 60-centimetre diameter, touchable globe, on
which visitors could interactively discover the entire world of aviation research.
Another highlight at the Bauhaus Luftfahrt booth was the presentation of the
world’s first “solar” jet fuel on April 26th, 2018. Within the framework of the SOLAR-
JET research project funded by the European Union, synthetic “solar” kerosene had
been produced for the first time. The entire production chain for renewable fuel from
sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide had been successfully completed, which could
have a major impact on the future of aviation.
Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt hat auch auf
der ILA Berlin 2018 bei Politik (unter
anderem Verkehrsminister Andreas
Scheuer), Fachpublikum und der
breiten Öffentlichkeit für Aufmerksamkeit
gesorgt.
At ILA Berlin 2018, Bauhaus Luftfahrt
once again attracted the attention of
politicians (including Federal Transport
Minister Andreas Scheuer), important
trade visitors, and the wider public.

Was treibt die Mobilität von morgen? Welche alternativen
unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln: Die 37 Wissenschaftler
mit fachlicher Expertise aus Sozialwissenschaft und
Ökonomie, Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaft sowie Informatik
identifizieren und bewerten erfolgversprechende
Ansätze und entwickeln diese, häufig in Zusammenarbeit
mit nationalen und internationalen Partnern, als Grundlage
für neue Produktideen und -konzepte weiter. Damit
nimmt das Bauhaus Luftfahrt eine wichtige Vorreiterrolle
ein – als Ideenschmiede, Forschungseinrichtung und
Impulsgenerator für Fachwelt, Öffentlichkeit und Politik.
Die Luftverkehrsflotte wird sich allen Prognosen nach
bis 2050 verdreifachen. Die Ziele 75 % weniger CO 2 -
Ausstoß, deutlich geringere NO X - und Lärmemissionen
gegenüber dem Jahr 2000 sind im „Flightpath 2050“
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
formuliert.

About
Bauhaus Luftfahrt
What drives the mobility of tomorrow? What alternative
energy options will be available for aviation in the long
term? Which power and system technologies will further
improve the efficiency of future aircraft concepts, and
will these lead to completely new designs? What impact
will information technologies have on future products
and their development processes? In light of these and
other questions, as a research institution, Bauhaus
Luftfahrt analyses major driving forces, new technological
approaches, and innovative ideas and integrates
them into holistic solutions for aviation.
For more than a decade, Bauhaus Luftfahrt is
studying topics from very different perspectives in the
sense of a think tank: The 37 scientists with professional
expertise in their field areas of social sciences and
economics, nature and engineering sciences as well as
informatics identify and assess promising approaches
and develop them, frequently in collaboration with
national and international partners, as a basis for new
product ideas and concepts. Bauhaus Luftfahrt is thereby
playing a key pioneering role – as a think tank, a research
institution, and an impulse generator for experts, the
public, and politicians.
According to all forecasts, the civil aviation fleet will
triple by 2050. The goals of 75 % less CO 2 emissions,
considerably reduced NO x emissions and noise compared
to 2000 are expressed in Flightpath 2050. From the
growth in air traffic, the Flightpath 2050 goals, and the
long product life cycles of aircraft of up to 60 years,
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Bauhaus Luftfahrt derives its task of going far beyond
the boundaries of conventional technologies and
materials and of studying new aspects. Here, no predictions
can or should be made on what the next product
will be. Instead, scientists are searching for new technologies
and materials, showing their relevance for
future developments, and raising awareness of wherein
the potential for aviation lies. The knowledge gained in
this way offers numerous incentives to think differently
and participate in discussions – and all of that is outside
the existing conventional research and development
landscape. The approach, to first let an idea arise in an
interdisciplinary creative process and then check it in
a scientifically sound manner for its applicability, makes
Bauhaus Luftfahrt unique as a research institution in
Germany and Europe.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt e. V. was founded in November
2005 by the three aerospace companies Airbus,
Liebherr-Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines as well as
the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional
Development and Energy. The source of the name was
Staatliches Bauhaus, the interdisciplinary art, design,
and architecture school by Walter Gropius in the
Weimar and Dessau of the 1920s. Since 2012, IABG
Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft has rounded out
the circle of renowned industrial partners. Since 2015,
Bauhaus Luftfahrt has been based on Ludwig Bölkow
Campus in Taufkirchen near Munich, whose founding
partner it is.

Was braucht es, damit
Urban Air Mobility zum
Massentransport wird?
What Does It Take for
Urban Air Mobility to
Be Mass Transport?
Neue Einsatzgebiete für Luftfahrzeuge eröffnen sich
durch Entwicklungen in der elektrischen Antriebs-,
Batterie- und Sensortechnologie. Zurzeit arbeiten
mehr als hundert Unternehmen an der Realisierung
des Konzeptes von Urban Air Mobility (UAM), dem
Einsatz von vertikal startenden und landenden Flugzeugen
für den inter- und innerstädtischen Personenverkehr.
Um die potenzielle Transportleistung von UAM
zu verstehen, verfolgt das Bauhaus Luftfahrt einen
agentenbasierten Modellierungsansatz, da – im
Gegensatz zum klassischen Vier-Stufen-Ansatz – die
agentenbasierte Modellierung dynamische Agentenentscheidungen
Auswirkungen liefern. Somit können
wesentliche Anforderungen auf Vehikel, Infrastruktur
und Betriebsebene abgeleitet werden.
performance of UAM, Bauhaus Luftfahrt pursues an
agent-based modelling approach, since – in contrast
to the classical four-step approach – agent-based
modelling enables dynamic agent decisions during
simulation. Thus, new mobility services, such as
on-demand, sharing, or pooling, which are the basis
of most UAM concepts, can be analysed.
The transport simulation framework MATSim has
been extended by a UAM module that enables the
definition of UAM infrastructure and vehicles and
allows the agents of the simulation to integrate
UAM as a means of transport into their daily mobility
behaviour. Therefore, UAM is simulated in a coherent
urban traffic model, in which UAM cooperates and
competes with ground-based traffic systems.
This simulation capability is used to perform sensitivity
studies on UAM parameters that provide
estimates of UAM traffic volumes and the resulting
transport system-wide effects. Thus, essential
requirements at vehicle, infrastructure, and operational
level can be derived.

An essential key to the successful market launch of urban air mobility, besides the technical performance of future
UAM systems, is the broad public acceptance. To achieve this, it is necessary to identify at an early development stage
a future added value of urban air mobility for a large proportion of the city’s population. The agent-based simulation thus opens
up a detailed view of the individual potential user as well as the synergetic interaction with the existing transport system and the
quantification of effects on the entire transport system in a city.

wichtig.
Zur Untersuchung der Effekte wurde eine Simulation
aufgesetzt, um das statistische Aufkommen
von Konflikten als Funktion der Luftfahrzeugdichte
einschätzen zu können. Ein physikbasierter Algorithmus
zur optimalen Flugführung bei Konfliktvermeidung
wurde implementiert und wird auf seine Leistungsfähigkeit
hin optimiert und analysiert.
In future scenarios, which envision drones and air
taxis operating in high numbers as well as at low
altitude in airspaces that as of yet are not highly
frequented, novel concepts and technologies are
required for safe and efficient operation. Apart from
technical reliability, collision avoidance is a crucial
aspect handled differently in traditional aviation,
according to visual and instrument flight rules, and
based on airspace allocation, procedures, and telecommunications.
As flying according to visual flight
rules is weather dependent and airspace capacity
is limited under instrument flight rules, neither
approach is directly applicable to visions of urban
air mobility. Here, new and robust concepts are
required.
Mobile applications that enable safe operation
using digital databases and visualisation are available
today to drone pilots. As air traffic densities
increase, flight route planning and optimisation
should happen already on ground to forestall collision
avoidance manoeuvres in the air. Algorithms,
for example from the field of robotics, are required
for this task. As certain conflicts may not be anticipated,
for example, the emergence of an unregistered
drone, methods for real-time route adjustments
are required.
In order to investigate the relevant effects, a
simulation was set up to be able to estimate the
statistical occurrences of conflicts as function of air
traffic density. A physics-based algorithm for optimum
flight guidance under the condition of conflict
prevention was implemented and its capability is
being optimised and analysed.

Elektrische Antriebskonzepte sind eine Schlüsseltechnologie
zur Entwicklung senkrechtstartender
Lufttaxis.
deutlich geringere Energiemengen. Erst auf längeren
Strecken erreicht das Lift+Cruise-Konzept bessere
Effizienzwerte. Das legt in dieser Hinsicht einen
Flottenmix für künftige UAM-Szenarien nahe.
Electric propulsion concepts are a key technology
for the development of VTOL air taxis for urban air
mobility. Electric power transmission enables the
distribution of thrust generation to multiple, flexibly
arranged rotors or fans, opening up a large design
space. The balance between efficient hovering/
vertical flight and high efficiency during cruise flight
is an essential design decision. Considering a possible
future on-demand UAM network, it is also important
to be able to serve a broad spectrum of ranges
in the best possible way.
In a study at Bauhaus Luftfahrt, two air taxi concepts
with different design priorities were investigated
as possible reference configurations: a multicopter
with 18 concentrically arranged rotors and
a correspondingly large rotor surface as well as a
so-called lift+cruise configuration. The latter enables
vertical take-off and landing using eight smaller
rotors and changes to a separate drive train with a
single propeller for cruise flight. Lift is then efficiently
generated by fixed wings. This allows a much higher
cruising speed of 180 km/h compared to the multicopter.
A glance at the energy efficiency for different
mission ranges illustrates the different strengths of
the concepts. The multicopter requires significantly
less energy for missions within its mission range
(up to 19 km). Only on longer mission ranges, the
lift+cruise concept achieves better efficiency values.
From an energy efficiency perspective, this indicates
a fleet mix for future UAM scenarios.

The development of air vehicles for urban air mobility applications is reflected in various concepts, and the present study
also suggests a fleet mix of different configurations. Nevertheless, it is still very difficult to predict which concepts will
ultimately be successful in combination with the degrees of freedom in design. In addition to the technological advantages, practical
aspects such as approval, reliability, operational cost, or user preferences will determine the market success of individual UAM.
Therefore, such technical analyses together with the simulations of the operator models provide a basis for the evaluation of air
transport in urban areas.

Decision-Support
in Maintenance
Ergebnisunsicherheit gewinnbringend reduzieren
können. Somit erlaubt er Zuverlässigkeit und Profitabilität
von Prescriptive-Maintenance-Ansätzen
und damit, ihr Einsatzpotenzial für neue Geschäftsmodelle,
wie Servitization oder automatisierte
(Fern-)Wartung, zu steigern.
The progressive shift from time-based to demandbased
maintenance concepts is driven by the use
of more and more data and advanced analytics
technologies. In this way, predictive maintenance
can detect early signatures of component failure
and thereby reduce downtime. 1 A significant step
further goes prescriptive maintenance. By comparing
the chances of success of maintenance alternatives
and their effects on, for example, cost and
safety, optimised courses of actions are recommended.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt has investigated the
key question as to how their reliability and their
potential business advantage can be assessed and
improved.
A statistics-based approach to cost-benefit
analysis was chosen, the value of which was illustrated
by an example. Replacing a component can
be more expensive than repairing it, but then it is
new and perhaps more long-lived. The result of the
cost trade-off is influenced by uncertainties concerning,
for example, remaining useful life and
cost factors. These were quantified by probability
distributions, just as the result of the cost trade-off
that was determined by a Monte Carlo simulation.
The probabilistic approach shows not only
which decision option promises the higher profit
and is thus preferred, but also with which risk and
potential cost disadvantage it is associated. It also
determines where higher-quality data or information
can gainfully reduce result uncertainty and
hence be assigned a monetary value. Thus, the
presented approach allows to enhance the reliability
and profitability of prescriptive maintenance
strategies and thereby increases their application
potential for new business models, such as servitization
or automated (remote) maintenance.
Inspired Materials
and Structures
Biologische Konzepte und Systeme können Inspiration
für technische Innovationen sein. Die Prinzipien
biologischer Strukturen zu analysieren und
hinsichtlich geeigneter Parameter einzuordnen,
Biological concepts and systems can inspire technological
innovations. It can be of great value to
analyse the principles behind natural structures
and assess them with regard to suitable parameters
in order to create novel technological materials
and structures.
One well-known example are self-cleaning
surfaces, emulating the surface of the lotus leaf.
Nano- and microscopic structuring of the surface
can also be used for passive anti-ice surface technologies
for aviation, leading to energy-efficient
de-icing concepts. 1
Not only biological surfaces like those of lotus
leaves, but biological materials as a whole are
often structured in a hierarchical way over many
orders of magnitude. This principle also determines
the properties of wood, which played a major role
as construction material in aviation in the past, and
that might become interesting again in another
form through an innovative densification process.
“Natural” features of wood are often acting
as origins for failure under mechanical load. Their
number can be drastically reduced by a novel twostep
treatment. 2 After partial removal of lignin, the
wood is hot-pressed, resulting in a highly densified
structure. The cellulose fibres are well aligned,
facilitating the formation of hydrogen bonds between
neighbouring cellulose molecules. Together with the
reduction of defects, this results in an increased
toughness and in a more than tenfold rise in tensile
strength compared to natural wood. The values
for strength are then similar to those of aluminium
alloys. Laminates fabricated of this anisotropic
material are potentially applicable to innovative
structures in aviation.
The recent technological evolution towards connected, situation-aware, and adaptive technologies suggests analogies
with biology. Networked, intelligent solutions create a new cyber-physical innovation paradigm. Bio-inspired innovation
is therefore more relevant than ever. For example, a “bio-intelligent” model is the network-forming unicellular organism Physarium
polycephalum. In a lab demonstration, it simultaneously optimised a scaled urban transport network in terms of efficiency, stability,
and cost. Neural quantum computers are another example. Therefore, the Bauhaus Luftfahrt Technology Radar also explores bioinspired
solutions to the complex challenges of digital transformation.

Vom Datenbewusstsein
zur Nutzbarmachung
von Wissen
From Data Awareness
to Harnessing
Knowledge
Die Steigerung von Qualität und Nachvollziehbarkeit
im Produktionsablauf ist ein zentrales Versprechen
von Industrie 4.0. Hierfür soll die Bauteilbearbeitung
durch Auswertung von Daten aus dem operativen
Geschäft unterstützt oder sogar neu ausgerichtet
werden. Ziel ist der Aufbau weitreichender Steuerungsmöglichkeiten
auf Basis einer volldigitalisierten
und integrierten Produktionskette. Welches
konkrete Potenzial sich hier für einen Flugzeugkomponentenhersteller
ergeben kann, wurde im Rahmen
des LuFo-Projektes EFFPRO_4.0 anhand einer mehrstufigen
Datenuntersuchung evaluiert.
Datenanalysen
gewinnbringend zu
integrieren, bedingt
eine vorherige
Nutzbarmachung
Integrating data
profitable way
requires harnessing
of its domainspecific
context.
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Increasing the quality and traceability in the production
process is a central promise of Industry 4.0. For
this purpose, component manufacturing is supported
or even realigned by evaluating data from the operative
business. One objective is to establish farreaching
operative control options on the basis of
a fully digitalised and integrated production chain.
The LuFo project EFFPRO_4.0 evaluated the concrete
potential of this target for an aircraft component
manufacturer on the basis of a multi-stage
data analysis.
Based on a mapping of the production landscape,
valuable data sources were first chosen
using a process-oriented data diagram (see Yearbook
2017). Procedures from quality data management
were then combined with classical approaches
from data mining and time series analysis in order
to derive quantitative statements on process capability
or to identify conspicuous measurement
series. Ultimately, however, the knowledge of the
respective technical experts was decisive in order
to be able to assess the result in its context.
Even though the potential for data evaluation
and forecasting has certainly not yet been exhausted
at this point, our practical evaluation suggests
that the pivotal success factor is neither the quantity
nor the quality of the underlying data, but the
deeper understanding of the domain’s background.
Thus, making far-reaching operational decisions
requires the sufficient accumulation of contextual
knowledge beforehand. Above all, it is harnessing
this knowledge that makes data analyses valuable
in the first place and thus should be at the heart
of future Industry 4.0 approaches right from the
beginning.
Engineering 4.0
und die Wirklichkeit
von Modellen
Engineering 4.0
and the Reality of
Models
Modelle
begleiten den Engineering-Prozess von der Anforderungsanalyse
über erste Designentwürfe und Simulationsmodelle
bis hin zu physischen Modellen und
Prototypen. Die fortschreitende Digitalisierung dieses
kreativen Prozesses und die Verfügbarkeit gewaltiger
Rechenkraft verändern dabei die Rolle von Modellen:
Modelle treiben zunehmend das Engineering (vor-)an
und etablieren sich als die eigentlichen Engineering-
Objekte. Modelle und die physischen Produkte gehen
hier eine neue Koexistenz ein: Produkte werden
anhand von Modellen realisiert und über ihren
Lebenszyklus von ihrem digitalen Zwillingsmodell
begleitet.
Die Harmonisierung der aktuellen Modellierungspraxis
über den gesamten Lebenszyklus und unter
Einbeziehung aller teilnehmenden Stakeholder ist ein
wichtiger Schritt, um hier neue, integrierte, modellbasierte
Engineering-Prozesse zu etablieren. Gerade
darin liegt aber eine der größten Herausforderungen
jenseits von technischen Problemen, wie Austauschformaten,
Schnittstellen oder Tools: Modelle werden
stets in einem spezifischen Kontext eines Produktes
und Projektes erstellt. Um die Zusammenarbeit
zwischen den unterschiedlichen Stakeholdern zu
unterstützen, müssen Modelle also ausreichend
Kontext- und Hintergrundwissen über ihren Lebenszyklus
hinweg vorhalten.
“Models are at the heart of engineering”, as every
practitioner would immediately agree. Models are
accompanying the engineering process from requirements
analysis over first design sketches and simulation
models to physical models and prototypes.
Today’s proceeding digitalisation of this creative process
and the availability of immense computation
power are changing the role of models: models are
increasingly becoming the basis and the heart of
engineering – they emerge as principal engineering
entities. Models and the physical products are in a
new coexistence along their lifecycles: products are
realisations of models and are accompanied by their
digital twin model.
Harmonising the state-of-the-art modelling practice,
techniques, and tool chains over the whole lifecycle
is crucial to accomplish a well-integrated,
model-based engineering process and to involve all
participating stakeholders along the lifecycle. Here,
the real challenge lies beyond technical obstacles,
such as interchange formats, interfaces, and tools:
Models are built and updated in a context specific to
a given project and product. Therefore, they should
provide substantial context and background knowledge
supporting the collaboration of stakeholders
along the entire lifecycle.
After organising a first well-received workshop
on “Model-based engineering in aviation” with our
partners, we are looking forward to continue discussions
in subsequent events in order to analyse the
identified challenges. Understanding the ongoing
step-change in digitalised aircraft engineering, its
consequences and potentials is the crucial first step
towards an Engineering 4.0.
Changing
Mobility in Europe
Das zukünftige europäische Transportsystem steht
vor der Herausforderung, intermodale Lösungen
unter Berücksichtigung der Nutzeranforderungen
zu entwickeln. Im EU-geförderten Projekt Mobility4EU
wurde eine Vision für ein nutzerzentriertes
und intermodales Transportsystem für Europa in
2030 erarbeitet. Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt nahm hier
die Luftverkehrsperspektive ein. Ein Fahrplan für
diese Vision, der Mobility4EU-Aktionsplan, definiert
spezifische Aktionspunkte, die umgesetzt werden
müssen, um die Ziele zu erreichen.
Kurzfristige Aktionspunkte priorisieren vorrangig
den Austausch und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen
den verschiedenen Vertretern der Verkehrsträger,
die Förderung der Dekarbonisierung des
europäischen Transportsystems und das Bestreben
eines besseren Verständnisses der Verhaltensmuster
der Nutzer für die Entwicklung neuer Geschäftsmodelle.
Darüber hinaus muss ein rechtlicher Rahmen
für die Umsetzung neuer Transportlösungen
auf EU-Ebene geschaffen werden.
Ein wesentlicher Bestandteil eines intermodalen
Verkehrssystems sind der kontinuierliche
Betrieb und die Verbesserung des bestehenden
Luftverkehrs sowie neuartige Ansätze speziell für
den urbanen Lufttransport. Insbesondere die Anbindung
internationaler Flughäfen kann mit Hybridbis
vollelektrischen sowie automatisierten oder
sogar autonomen Lufttransportlösungen verbessert
werden.
Um den Austausch zwischen allen Beteiligten
im Verkehrsbereich zu fördern, wurde das Forum
für Verkehr und Mobilität ins Leben gerufen. Diese
Plattform soll die Implementierung von nutzerzentrierten
und intermodalen Transportlösungen erleichtern
und eine kontinuierliche Diskussion ermöglichen.
This project has received
funding from the European
Union’s Horizon 2020
research and innovation
programme under grant
agreement No. 690732.
The future European transport system is expected
to provide intermodal solutions meeting the users’
requirements. Within the project Mobility4EU,
funded by the European Commission, a vision for
a user-centred and cross-modal transport system
in Europe in 2030 was developed, where Bauhaus
Luftfahrt focussed on aviation’s future role. A roadmap
towards that vision, the Mobility4EU Action
Plan, defines specific action items, which need to
be implemented to achieve the vision’s objectives.
Major objectives, which are addressed by
immediate action items in the roadmap, focus on
encouraging exchange and collaboration between
different transport stakeholders, promoting decarbonisation
of the European transport system and
gaining a better understanding of users’ behaviour
patterns to develop new business approaches in
transport. Furthermore, an EU legal framework for
the implementation of novel transport solutions is
required.
One integral part of a truly intermodal transport
system are the continuous operation and improvement
of commercial aviation as well as new transport
solutions, such as urban air mobility. Especially
the connection of international airports can be
improved with this concept of hybrid to full electric,
automated or even autonomous flying vehicles.
In order to foster the required exchange among
the all transport stakeholders, the European Transport
and Mobility Forum has been initiated. This
platform intends to continue with the implementation
of user-centred and cross-modal transport
solutions and to enable continuous discussions
about these transport solutions.
Wie können
Fluggesellschaften in
Zukunft Geld verdienen?
How Can Airlines
Make Money in the
Future?
Ein Großteil heutiger Fluggesellschaften hat Probleme,
ein profitables Geschäftsmodell aufzusetzen.
Innovationen in diesem Bereich sind somit essenziell,
um neue Einnahmequellen aufzutun und im
wettbewerbsintensiven Markt zu bestehen. Im
Rahmen einer Szenarioanalyse in Zusammenarbeit
zwischen der Technischen Universität München,
Airbus, dem Flughafen München und dem Bauhaus
Luftfahrt wurden zukünftige Entwicklungspfade,
Nischenmärkte und Geschäftsmodelle für diesen
Sektor diskutiert.
Eine Vielzahl von Faktoren, die einen Einfluss
auf den zukünftigen Markt von Fluggesellschaften
haben, wie Marktliberalisierung oder veränderte
Passagierbedürfnisse, wurden auf konsistente und
plausible Weise kombiniert, sodass drei unterschiedliche
Szenarien resultierten. Anhand der differenzierten
Entwicklung in jedem Szenario wurden
verschiedene Geschäftsmöglichkeiten und Einnahmequellen
evaluiert. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass
Digitalisierung einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf
diesen Sektor hat. Eine nahtlose Reisekette für
Passagiere kann durch den besseren Austausch von
Daten zwischen Transportdienstleistern ermöglicht
werden.
Zudem ist die Ausgestaltung von Geschäftsmodellen
sehr unterschiedlich – vom Anbieter der
gesamten Reisekette bis hin zum reinen Anbieter
des Flugzeuges. Der Szenarioansatz und die Ergebnisse
fördern somit ein besseres Verständnis der
zukünftigen Einflüsse und Entwicklungen, denen
sich die Fluggesellschaften im Speziellen und die
Luftfahrt im Allgemeinen gegenübersehen. Innovationspotenzial
und das Erkennen von Passagierbedürfnissen
können zu einem Wettbewerbsvorteil
und zu neuen Einnahmequellen führen. Das Aufzeigen
neuer Geschäftsmodelle erweitert außerdem
die heutige Diskussion bezüglich Low-Cost-Airlines
und Full-Service-Airlines.
A high share of airlines struggles to operate profitably.
Innovating airline business models is therefore
crucial to tap additional revenue sources and to
persist in a competitive market. Future paths for
the airline industry, new business models, and
niche markets have been discussed within a scenario-based
analysis in cooperation between Technical
University of Munich, Airbus, Munich Airport,
and Bauhaus Luftfahrt.
Multiple factors that have an influence on the
future airline sector, such as liberalisation efforts
or changing passenger expectations, were combined
in a plausible and consistent way to yield
three different scenario frameworks. The distinct
development within each of these scenarios provided
the basis for the evaluation of new airline
business opportunities and related revenue sources.
It showed that digitalisation is one of the main
drivers for changes within this sector. In order to
facilitate a seamless journey, providers of services
and products along the travel chain see increased
need for sharing and accessing relevant data.
Furthermore, airline business models take different
shapes, ranging from an integrated service
company to a mere provider of the aircraft itself.
This approach and the scenario results contribute
to a more detailed understanding of future
challenges and opportunities for the airline sector.
Being innovative and answering to passenger
expectations provide the potential for a competitive
advantage and resulting ancillary revenues. The
discussion of potential new business models
broadens the current debate circling around low
cost carriers and full service network airlines.

Dr. Annika Paul Lead Operations
We are about to witness a redesign of the transport system as we know it today. Coming up with solutions that tackle
increasing congestion, significantly reduce emissions and, at the same time, meet distinct future passenger needs is an
essential step in this direction. New competitors, such as online platforms, are challenging today’s transport business models by
already providing more efficient or better-tailored services and products. A sustainable rethinking can be realised, though, if the
cooperation across transport modes as well as with other stakeholders is intensified and innovations are being mutually pushed
forward and implemented.

Zukünftige Pfade hin
zu mehr Nachhaltigkeit
in der Luftfahrt
Future Pathways
towards Sustainability
in Aviation
verschiedene Technologieszenarien beleuchtet.
Diese umfassen sowohl evolutionäre
Entwicklungen zur Effizienzsteigerung von Flugzeugen
als auch den Einsatz von nachhaltigem Kerosin.
Erste Ergebnisse zeigen, dass eine kombinierte
Strategie aus starken Effizienzsteigerungen und
einer massiven Nutzung nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe
die Erreichung der Klimaziele potenziell ermöglicht.
Unter bestimmten Bedingungen ließe sich dabei
der Anstieg der Kraftstoffkosten pro Passagierkilometer
auf unter 50 % im Vergleich zum heutigen
Niveau begrenzen. Dies erfordert allerdings
günstige sozioökonomische Rahmenbedingungen,
hohe Technologieinvestitionen sowie ernsthafte
und unverzügliche Anstrengungen aller Luftfahrtakteure.
Weiterführende Forschung wird sich auf den
Ausbau der Simulationsmodelle und die Präzisierung
der Rahmenbedingungen konzentrieren, um
erweiterte und robustere Szenarien entwickeln und
Handlungsempfehlungen für die Luftfahrtakteure
ableiten zu können.
Eine wettbewerbsfähige
und nachhaltige
Luftfahrt ist
aber ganzheitliche
Aviation is facing substantial ecological challenges.
Strong growth of air travel will likely lead to a sustained
increase in greenhouse gas emissions. This
stands in contrast to the goal of the aviation industry
to reduce fleet-wide emissions by 50 % until 2050
and the worldwide goal to limit global warming to
preferably under 1.5 °C.
This brings up a core question: Which technological
solutions are available in order to achieve
substantial emissions reductions, and which implementation
costs might the aviation industry have
to face?
In cooperation with Munich Airport, system
dynamic models have been developed to shed light
on different possible technology scenarios. These
comprise both evolutionary technologies increasing
aircraft efficiency and the deployment of sustainable
jet fuel. First results show that climate goals
can be achieved with a combined strategy of strong
aircraft efficiency improvements and a massive
use of sustainable fuels. Under certain conditions,
fuel cost increase per passenger kilometre can
be limited to 50 %, compared to current levels.
However, this requires a supportive socioeconomic
framework, high investments in technology, as well
as serious and immediate commitments by all aviation
actors.
In order to develop more complete and robust
scenarios and deduce policy recommendations for
aviation actors, future research will focus on
expanding the simulation models and specifying
more precisely framework conditions.

Dr. Arne Roth Lead Alternative Fuels
The targets for climate protection defined in the Paris Agreement demand drastic reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions and, ultimately, a complete decarbonisation of all sectors, including aviation. An important measure for
aviation to meet these targets is to reduce fuel consumption, for example, through technological innovations and operational
optimisation. Another mandatory measure is the energy transition in air traffic, that is, the transition to a renewable energy basis.
The assessment of technical, environmental, and socioeconomic potentials of renewable energy carriers represent the central
task of the research focus area “Alternative Fuels” at Bauhaus Luftfahrt.

Particle Reactor
Synthesis Gas
Solarthermochemische Kraftstoffe könnten den
CO 2 -Eintrag der Luftfahrt um über 80 % gegenüber
konventionellem Kerosin senken und sind prinzipiell
in beliebiger Menge verfügbar.
Materials, welches dann auf der unteren, kalten
Solar thermochemical fuels could reduce the net
CO 2 emissions of the aviation sector by over 80 %
with respect to conventional fuels and are in principle
available in unlimited volumes. Using concentrated
solar energy in a thermochemical reactor,
water and CO 2 are converted into synthesis gas
from which jet fuel is subsequently synthesised in
the Fischer-Tropsch process. The thermochemical
process step with cerium oxide as the solid
reactant is the cornerstone of the process chain,
achieving energy conversion efficiencies of about
5 % 1 today. For an economical fuel production,
values approaching 20 % 2 should, however, be
accomplished. For that reason, new reactor concepts
are being investigated.
Among the new concepts, a reactor using
mobile cerium oxide particles is very promising
because it enables the effective transfer of heat
from hot to cold reactant material, as well as new
reactor geometries.
In the analysed reactor concept, the particles
move in a vertical counter-flow, whereas the cold
particles are heated by the hot ones. At the upper,
hot side, the material is reduced, while it is subsequently
reoxidised at the lower, cold side of the
reactor for the production of synthesis gas from
water and CO 2 . The detailed modelling of heat
transfer in this concept shows that about 50 to 80 %
of the heat can be recuperated, dependent on the
level of mixing of the particles. Developed in the
SUN-to-LIQUID project, this model can be used to
determine the optimal geometry for the maximisation
of efficiency. The performed work therefore
represents an important step on the path towards
more efficient reactors for solar thermochemical
fuel production.
of Biomass
Die hydrothermale Verflüssigung (HTL) ist ein
thermochemisches Verfahren zur Konversion
von Biomasse. Der HTL-Prozess kann selbst
problematische Abfallströme, wie Klärschlamm
und Gülle, ohne energieintensive Trocknung in
ein erdölähnliches Rohprodukt umwandeln.
Dieses „Biocrude“ wird durch petrochemische
Raffination zu Kraftstoffen aufbereitet.
Im EU-geförderten Projekt HyFlexFuel
arbeiten zehn europäische Partner an der Entwicklung
einer HTL-basierten Prozesskette zur
Produktion nachhaltiger Kraftstoffe. Alle Teilprozesse,
einschließlich der Verwertung von
Nebenprodukten und Restströmen, werden im
Projekt unter relevanten Prozessbedingungen
demonstriert.
Im ersten Projektjahr wurden an der Universität
Aarhus (DK) mehrere HTL-Kampagnen
an einer weltweit einzigartigen Pilotanlage
durchgeführt. Dabei wurden durch Konversion
von Klärschlamm, der Mikroalge Spirulina
und dem Energiegras Miscanthus jeweils über
10 kg Biocrude sowie 200 L wässrige Produktphase
gewonnen. 1
Erste Tests zur katalytischen Aufbereitung
des Biocrudes wurden an der Universität Aalborg
(DK) durchgeführt. Dabei konnten der
gebundene Sauerstoff vollständig sowie der
Stickstoff weitgehend entfernt werden. 2 Die
Abtrennung dieser Elemente ist ein wichtiger
Schritt auf dem Weg zur Produktion hochwertiger
Kraftstoffe.
Das Bauhaus Luftfahrt koordiniert das Projekt
HyFlexFuel und ist für die techno-ökonomische
und ökologische Analyse des Prozesspfades
verantwortlich. Erste Analysen zeigen,
dass die Integration einzelner Teilprozesse,
wie etwa die energetische Nutzung der wässrigen
Produktphase, eine entscheidende Rolle
spielt, um HTL-Kraftstoffe zu etablieren.
Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a thermochemical
technology for the conversion of biomass. Even
problematic wastes and residues, such as sewage
sludge and manures, can be processed through HTL
into a raw product that is similar to conventional
crude oil. This “biocrude” is upgraded to fuels
through petrochemical refining procedures.
In the EU-funded project HyFlexFuel, a consortium
of ten European partners collaborates on the
development of an HTL-based fuel production
chain. All sub-processes, including the valorisation
of by-products and residual process streams, are
demonstrated in a relevant operational environment.
In the first year of the project, HyFlexFuel partner
Aarhus University (DK) conducted several HTL
campaigns in a unique pilot facility. These campaigns
yielded more than 10 kg of biocrude and
200 L of aqueous product phase from processing
sewage sludge, microalgae (Spirulina), and the
energy grass miscanthus. 1
First screening experiments on catalytic upgrading
of biocrude were carried out by Aalborg
University (DK). Under certain process conditions,
the chemically bound oxygen could be completely
removed, while removal of nitrogen proved more
challenging and was partially achieved. 2 Complete
deoxygenation and denitrogenation represent
important steps on the way to produce liquid transportation
fuels.
In HyFlexFuel, Bauhaus Luftfahrt acts as coordinator
and is responsible for the techno-economic
and environmental assessment of the entire process
chain. First findings indicate that the integration
of individual sub-processes, such as the energetic
utilisation of the aqueous product phase,
plays a crucial role in the development of a HTLbased
fuel production.
Brennstoffzellen als
Mobilitätsoption: Fortschritte
und Perspektiven
Fuel Cells as Power
Option for Mobility:
Progress and Prospects
Mit der direkten elektrochemischen Umwandlung
von chemischer in elektrische Energie stellen
Brennstoffzellen eine vielversprechende Lösung für
elektrische Mobilität dar. Im Gegensatz zum Verbrennungsmotor
mit Generator ist die PEM-Brennstoffzelle
kompakter bei vergleichbarer spezifischer
Leistung. Die PEM-Brennstoffzelle ist heutzutage
eine ausgereifte Technologie, wobei Kosten,
Lebensdauer und Zuverlässigkeit drei Hauptkriterien
für den kommerziellen Erfolg und die Akzeptanz
sind, in denen ein Brennstoffzellensystem besser
sein muss als ein herkömmliches System.
Die Kosten eines PEM-Systems werden auf
Zellebene durch den Katalysator und die Membran
bestimmt. Der Stapel hat jedoch nur einen Anteil
von circa 40 % an den Gesamtkosten, die damit
zum größeren Teil durch die Nebenaggregate
bestimmt werden. Letztere sind auch die „Achillesferse“
bei der Zuverlässigkeit. So führen Probleme
mit Lüftern, Kompressoren und Undichtigkeiten
am häufigsten zu einer Abschaltung des Systems.
Die Kernkomponente, der Stapel, arbeitet dagegen
meist zuverlässig über die geforderten Betriebsstunden
und ist wartungsfrei.
Die Technologieziele für die PEM-Brennstoffzelle
von 2009 für das Jahr 2020 sowie die langfristigen
Ziele des „Fuel Cell Technologies Office“ im
„US Department of Energy“ wurden bereits in 2015
H 2 O 2
With the direct electrochemical conversion of chemical
energy to electrical energy, fuel cells represent
a promising solution for electrical mobility. In contrast
to the internal combustion engine with a
generator, the PEM fuel cell is more compact at a
comparable specific power. The PEM fuel cell is a
mature technology today, whereby cost, lifetime,
and reliability are three main criteria for commercial
success and acceptance on the market, wherein a
fuel cell system must be better than a conventional
system.
The catalyst and the membrane determine the
cost of a PEM system at cell level. At system level,
the auxiliary equipment cost accounts for the largest
share, whereas the stack accounts for about 40 %
of the total system cost. The auxiliary equipment is
also the “Achilles’ heel” in terms of reliability. Problems
with fans, compressors, and leakages are the
most frequent causes for a shutdown of the system.
The core component, the stack, usually works reliably
over the required operating hours and is truly
maintenance-free.
The technology targets for the PEM fuel cell for
2020 and the long-term targets, both set in 2009
by the “Fuel Cell Technologies Office” of the “US
Department of Energy”, were already achieved in
2015 and surpassed in some cases, such as the
power density of the fuel cell stack and system or
the required operating time. The commercial breakthrough,
however, requires a well-performing overall
system with a corresponding hydrogen infrastructure.
Such system is already being tested in the
context of urban mobility. Bauhaus Luftfahrt re-evaluates
in the field of climate impact of aviation the
long-term technology potentials at all levels of integration,
ranging from stack efficiency to the techno-economic
potential of the overall system.

Battery-based electric mobility has proven practical, despite the need for further development towards extended operating
range. Fuel cell systems, on the other hand, have different scaling characteristics and may provide a better solution for
extended operation times. Whereas fuel cell systems can compare to internal combustion engines today, they still exhibit significant
weight penalties by a factor of 10 at similar overall electric efficiencies, when opposed to core engines of gas turbines coupled with
an electric generator in the high-power regime. However, fuel cell systems as replacement for the APU seem to have reasonable
potential because of their specific integration benefits.

Die Auslegung des Antriebsstranges eines turboelektrisch
Concept“ stellt einen der Forschungsschwerpunkte
des von der Europäischen Union geförderten
Forschungsprojektes CENTRELINE dar. In diesem
Zusammenhang wurden am Bauhaus Luftfahrt Vorstudien
der wesentlichen Systeme durchgeführt.
Das Antriebskonzept zeichnet sich durch flügelinstallierte
Getriebefan-Triebwerke (GTF) aus, die
speziell für die zusätzliche Bereitstellung der Leistung
des elektrischen Propulsors am Rumpfheck
ausgelegt sind. Diese Zusatzleistung übersteigt
die typischen Leistungsbedarfe für Flugzeugsubsysteme
bei Weitem und kann starken Einfluss
auf die Leistungsbilanz der zugehörigen Triebwerkswellen
haben. Für ein Triebwerk mit einer
Design-Entnahmerate von 15 % der Niederdruckturbinenleistung
sind die Auswirkungen operativer
Entnahmeleistungen in der Abbildung rechts
oben gezeigt.
The conceptual design of the turboelectric drive
train for a Propulsive Fuselage Concept is one of the
research areas investigated as part of the European
Union-funded research project CENTRELINE. In this
context, pre-design studies of major systems were
conducted at Bauhaus Luftfahrt. The power transmission
concept is characterised by wing-installed
geared turbofan (GTF) engines specifically designed
to allow for power off-takes required for the operation
of the fuselage-installed electric propulsor.
These power extractions are significantly greater
than the amount typical for aircraft subsystems and
may have a strong impact on the power balance
of the engine spools. The powerplant off-design
study presented in the upper figure on the right page
shows the implications of varying operational power
extraction levels for a design off-take representing
15 % of the low-pressure turbine power output. For
comparison, the part power characteristic of a conventional
GTF is shown as well. As can be seen, the
extraction variability during off-design operation is
constrained by several operating limits of the associated
turbo components.
Important results on the design and operating
characteristics of the fuselage-installed propulsor
can be derived from the figure below. It has been
established that freestream total pressure recovery
ratio (p 2 /p 0 ) – a parameter that is typically impaired
in case of propulsors working in the boundary layer
– has a significant impact on the performance characteristics.
Beside the implications of design fan
pressure ratio variations, the second figure shows
the pronounced effect of p 2 /p 0 on fan diameter and
required shaft power at take-off conditions.
This project has received
funding from the European
Union’s Horizon 2020 research
and innovation programme
eng mit fortschrittlicher Gasturbinentechnologie integriert werden. Dies gilt auch für das vielversprechende turboelektrische
„Propulsive Fuselage Concept“.
Electric propulsion and power are a key enabler for new market segments at the low end of the payload-range spectrum.
Heat engines, however, will remain the backbone for propulsion and power in classic air transportation. To enable
a strong impact on aviation’s sustainability, the electrification of aircraft motive power requires a synergistic systems design
integration with advanced gas turbine technology. This holds true for the promising turboelectric Propulsive Fuselage Concept,
where low losses in the turboelectric power train and an optimum design and operational matching of the main power plants and
the aft fuselage fan are essential.

Kraftstoff als alternative
Wärmesenke für
zukünftige Flugzeugkonzepte
Fuel as Alternative
Heat Sink for Future
Aircraft
aufzunehmen. Die Studie zeigte, dass
Kraftstoff eine geeignete alternative Wärmesenke
für Flugzeuge mit großen Abwärmebelastungen
ist. Das bestehende Modell wird weiterentwickelt,
um die Leistung unter schwierigen Bedingungen,
wie beispielsweise beim Rollen, weiter zu untersuchen
und zu optimieren.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt investigates fuel as an alternative
heat sink to manage future aircraft’s cooling
needs. With the introduction of partial electric propulsion
systems, cooling requirements are likely to
increase by up to an order of magnitude compared
to today’s aircraft. For hybrid concepts, fuel poses
an excellent alternative as heat sink compared to
traditionally used ram air. It has a higher thermal
conductivity, heat capacity, and density. It is stored
in wing-integrated tanks, which enables the wings
to act as heat exchangers with ambient air, without
the addition of a drag increment to the aircraft
system. Furthermore, the cooling system mass can
be reduced due to shorter transmission distances
and more compact components.
In a first case study, the Bauhaus Luftfahrt quad
fan – a short-range, year-2035+, parallel discrete
hybrid-electric aircraft concept with a maximum
heat load of 120 kW – was investigated. The first
developed model is stationary, but multiple operating
points were considered. A fuel flow absorbs
all emitted waste heat from the electric propulsion
system and circulates underneath the wing skin
to enhance heat transfer to ambient. The system
is able to remove the entire waste heat during all
operating conditions, except for the taxi case.
During flight, the conservatively designed system
has the capacity to absorb temporary peak loads.
The study showed that fuel is a viable alternative
heat sink for aircraft with large waste heat loads.
The developed model can be refined to further
investigate and optimise performance in challenging
conditions, such as the taxi case.

The handling of waste heat plays a central role in many alternative propulsion concepts. For example, for both fuel cells
and power electronics, if they are part of the primary propulsion architecture, cooling is one of the biggest challenges
for integration in passenger aircraft. Heat flows of this magnitude can only be reliably evaluated and processed at the overall
aircraft level. Innovative approaches for the synergetic integration of aircraft components, such as structural elements and other
subsystems, into a cooling concept can be crucial for the successful integration of alternative propulsion systems.

erarbeitet. Darauf aufbauend wurde ein Bewertungsansatz
entwickelt, der für die konzeptionelle
Bewertung der Eigenschaften unkonventioneller
Konfigurationen mit einer starken Kopplung
zwischen Antriebssystem und Flugzeugaerodynamik
universell anwendbar ist. Der Ansatz basiert auf
integraler Impulserhaltung in einem Nahfeld-
Kontrollvolumen. Die Methode ist mit Standard-
Flugzeug- und Antriebssystemauslegungsmethoden
kompatibel und kann unter bestimmten Annahmen
auf Berechnungsmethoden unterschiedlich hoher
Genauigkeit, wie zum Beispiel semiempirische
Methoden, numerische (CFD) oder experimentelle
Methoden, angewandt werden.
A Unified Bookkeeping
Approach for
Boundary Layer
Ingestion Concepts
Targeting the exploitation of thus far unused vehicular
efficiency benefits, aircraft concepts with a
closely coupled propulsion-airframe integration,
such as boundary layer ingestion (BLI) configurations,
have gained much attention in the recent
past. These concepts feature a closely integrated
propulsion system and therefore exhibit a high level
of coupling between airframe aerodynamics and
propulsion system characteristics. Their performance
assessment cannot be based on an existing
bookkeeping scheme for a conventional aircraft
with separated airframe and propulsion system.
A number of bookkeeping approaches can be found
in literature that address this issue in various ways
for specific configurations and particular purposes.
Most are not easily applicable to other concepts or
to all phases of conceptual design. The increasingly
detailed investigation of a Propulsive Fuselage
Concept in the on-going project CENTRELINE drove
the need for a unified bookkeeping scheme. An
approach was developed that is able to integrate
results from numerical optimisation as well as
experimental assessment in an integrated sizing
and optimisation process, being able to consider
all closely coupled aerodynamic effects of BLI. The
bookkeeping scheme follows an integral momentum
conservation approach in a near field control volume.
It is universally applicable to coupled airframe-propulsion
aircraft concepts, compatible with
standard aircraft and propulsion system sizing
methods, and under certain assumptions deployable
for low- and high-fidelity evaluation methods, such
as semi-empirical methods as well as computational
fluid dynamics or physical testing results.

unter Berücksichtigung der Bestandsveränderungen
für unfertige Leistungen um 13,9 % auf 5,1 Millionen EUR
angestiegen.
In the fiscal year 2018, earnings of Bauhaus Luftfahrt
increased by 13.9 % to 5.1 million euros, taking into
account the changes in inventories of work in progress.
The increase is attributable to the revenues from
industrial partners. These grew by 349,000 euros
(+ 36.3 %), compared to the previous year. Funding
from third-party projects rose as well significantly by
395,000 euros (+ 34.3 %). The increase in revenues
mainly results from two new EU projects that have
started in the previous year.
For the year 2019, Bauhaus Luftfahrt further expects
a distinct increase in revenues from industrial partners.
Funding from third-party projects will probably stay at
the previous year’s level.
