Welcome to the 10th Annual
Prescott Film Festival!
The Prescott Film Festival was started for people who, like us, love and appreciate the movies!
Movies are a unique art form that tells stories. At their best, these stories make us laugh, move us to
tears, inspire us to take action, or bring us to a deeper understanding of the human condition. With
the help of our creative, talented and dedicated board of directors and volunteers, we are fortunate
to bring some of the best independent, foreign, and documentary films from across the country and
around the world to Yavapai County.
This year we are bringing you some very special events. We are very excited to be bringing you Silent
Symphony. We will screen a beautifully remastered version of The General with live accompaniment by the
Mont Alto Silent Film Orchestra. For over 25 years, Mont Alto has been delighting audiences across the
country from Lincoln Center to the Telluride Film Festival and beyond. They are known for their authentic
photoplay style which allows the music to speak for the film, just as music did over a century ago when
films were not “talkies.”
We also have arranged for an exhibit of historic film posters to be exhibited in the Yavapai College Art
Gallery. Many thanks to Tom Slaback for sharing the posters of films shot in Yavapai County from his
personal collection!
Soon to be added to that poster collection is the one for the made-in-Prescott film, Wish Man. We are
THRILLED to open the 10th annual festival with the premiere of this film about long time Prescott resident
and co-founder of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Frank Shankwitz.
I would like to thank the many local sponsors, foundations, and donors for their financial and in kind
support, as well as our board members (who work on the festival year round) and hundreds of dedicated
volunteers who have made the festival into the success it is today. Together, we have created an event that
is making Yavapai County an even better place to live. Thank you for your support! See you at the fest!
Located in the Yavapai College Art Gallery in the Performing Arts Center
Film is an art form. Movie poster designers have always been charged with
creating art that not only represents the film, but also engages people and
piques their curiosity enough to go to the movie. As part
of our 10th annual festival celebration, the Prescott Film
Festival is thrilled to present a movie poster exhibition in
the Yavapai College Art Gallery May 18th - June 15th. The
exhibit is curated and designed by Brandelyn Andres, YC
Art Faculty, and utilizes posters from the collection of Tom
Slaback, an avid collector of movie posters from films
made in Yavapai County. Tom’s extensive collection
ranges from the silent era to the present.
Tech Kills the Movies! Film at 11!
“Every time there has been a
groundbreaking technical advance in
the making of motion pictures, there are
those who feel it heralds not an advance
but the potential death knell of the
medium. Sound, color, wide screen…they
have all had their detractors. Now, along
comes computer graphics, a technology
that is maturing at an astonishing pace.
Will that finally be the advance that kills
filmmaking?”
Presented by Novelist and Screenwriter
Alan Dean Foster
4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Made in Yavapai County! Part I
Join us in the YC Art Gallery for a deeper
exploration of selected movie posters
in this exhibition of posters from films
made in Yavapai County. This talk will
be presented by movie poster curator
and local film historian, Tom Slaback.
Tom has been studying the history of
filmmaking in the county, including
interesting stories behind the making and
locations of the films. Film history comes
to life in this interesting talk!
2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Thriller Versus Horror Films and Why
We Can’t Get Enough
What are the psychological components
of The Silence of the Lambs and why
does it mesmerize audiences? How do
the filmmakers craft the themes and
supernatural components with stories
of ordinary people in extraordinary
situations contributed to their success?
What are the common denominators in
films like The Omen, The Exorcist, and
Rosemary's Baby? Why is it that what is
not seen on the screen and left to the
imagination can reveal an innate fear far
more powerful and effective than buckets
of blood?
Presented by Producer/Director/Film
Distributor Jeffery Cooper
3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
The Silence of the Lambs screening
Presented by Jeffery Cooper
2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
It’s Not the Monster but the Situation
that Frightens: Understanding the
Structure of a Horror Film
Traditional theories of horror emphasize
the role of the monster as being the
source of fear, or what is known as the
horror-effect. For example, It is not really
about a clown that eats children, but is
about the nature of fear itself. Both fear
and the possibility of losing our grasp
on reality are frightening. The monsters,
however, are only mediums by which
these ideas are communicated—they are
not the focus of the fear.
In this film talk, YC professor, Dr. Winters,
will present an argument in support
for what he calls situational horror.
Participants will then have their own
opportunity to create and explore horrific
situations as a basis for creating a horror
film plotline.
Presented by Yavapai College Philosophy
Professor Dr. Andrew Winters
3:30 – 5:00 p.m.
Bias
The toxic effects of bias make headlines
every day: sexual harassment, racial
profiling, the pay gap. As humans we are
biased; yet, few of us are willing to admit
it. We confidently make snap judgments,
but are shockingly unaware of the
impact our assumptions have on those
around us. The documentary feature
Bias follows filmmaker Robin Hauser
on a journey to uncover her hidden
biases and explore how unconscious
bias defines relationships, workplaces,
our justice system, and technology.
Hauser contemplates the most pressing
question: can we de-bias our brains?
