7th Annual
Prescott Film Festival
July 17-24, 2016
“…supporting independent and critically acclaimed films and filmmakers….”
We are celebrating our 7th annual festival this year and are THRILLED with the lineup
of fantastic films and workshops! Each year we have grown and changed a bit, all the
while keeping our mission at the forefront of what we do. We continue to present
amazing “movies that move you” and “entertain, inspire and inform.”
Our films are unique, fun, fascinating, inspiring and many bring us a true sense of
gratitude for living in (or having a chance to visit) the Central Arizona Highlands we call
home.
This year, thanks to the Yavapai College Film and Media Arts Program, an impressive
slate of workshops will be held during PFF. These are fantastic offerings for new and
experienced filmmakers, movie geeks and lovers of the art form! This is a chance to
meet professionals in the industry, hear about their experiences and perhaps, through
these workshops, take craft and/or enjoyment and appreciation of film to the next level.
There will be a representative from RED Cinema camera giving a demo, a professional
animation editor, an award winning sound designer and editor, a film preservationist, a
film financer, (yeah; a “money guy!”) two screenwriting workshops and several successful
indie filmmakers. These will all be “don’t miss” FREE workshops!
This year’s fest kicks off with a special “Film Noir and Pinot Noir” wine tasting. The
noir film is The Lady from Shanghai starring Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. Our special
guest? Beatrice Welles, daughter of Orson Welles. We will have a special screening on
the National Day of the Cowboy, July 23rd. Additionally we will have quirky unique films,
and a fantastic slate of shorts for your enjoyment!
The Prescott Film Festival would not be possible without the help of our generous
sponsors, grantors and volunteers. Please thank a volunteer when you have a chance.
And take note of the sponsors and grantors in this program guide and on the “big
screen” in our theatres. When you see them or frequent their businesses, please tell
them you appreciate their support of the Prescott Film Festival.
Have a wonderful festival experience and thank YOU for your support!
Film Preservation
Monday, July 18, 5:00 – 6:00 pm
Presenter: Bob O’Neil
In the history of motion picture cinema and television there have been many challenges
in preserving and restoring titles from the past (film) as well as the future
(digital). Technical issues like obsolete formats and deteriorating media are part of
the obstacles in working with an old library. Bob O’Neil takes us on a journey through
the film vaults and the fascinating process that results in the preservation of our film
heritage.
Bob O’Neil worked at Universal Studios for nearly 40 years, retired, and recently
moved to Prescott. He spent the final 25 years of his career doing analogue film
preservation, restoration, and asset management on such titles as Dracula, Bride of
Frankenstein, All Quiet On the Western Front, To Kill A Mockingbird, Double Indemnity, Psycho,
and Rear Window.
Planting the Seed of your Film:
Writing an Effective Log Line
Tuesday, July 19, 3:30 – 4:30 pm
Presenter: Jeff Wood
A clear, concise, and compelling log line is to
your completed story what the seed is to a
mighty tree: It contains the potential and the
necessary information to grow straight, tall, and
tower above the rest. In this hands-on workshop,
we will discuss what a log line is (and isn’t),
what the essential elements
are, and how to craft one of
your own. No experience is
required. Participants will leave
the seminar with one log line
with a story begging to be
written from it! Jeff Wood is
the Screenwriting Instructor
for the Film and Media Arts
program at Yavapai College.
Micro and Macro Film Financing
Tuesday, July 19, 5:00 – 6:00 pm
Presenter: Larry Sakin
Larry will explore the
sublime outlets and dirty
secrets for funding your
project. Larry believes,
“Financing is among the
greatest challenges facing
filmmakers today. In an
uncertain economy that
stymies masters of the
craft, how do innovative
filmmakers find the money to complete their
vision?” Larry Sakin has been in the entertainment
industry for thirty-six years. Most recently,
he was the Executive Producer for the internationally
acclaimed documentary Being George
Clooney, and is serving as Executive Producer for
a documentary on global climate change.
take a filmatic tour through sound editing, design and Foley and find out how
audio takes us on an emotional ride at the movies.
Noah Blough has over 30 years experience in the film industry. His feature
sound work includes Field of Dreams, Stargate, Independence Day, Black Hawk
Marketing
Wednesday, July 20, 2:30 – 3:30 pm
Presenters: Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella
Finding gainful employment in Hollywood has
long been the ultimate goal for many aspiring
filmmakers and television producers. In this
workshop, veteran producers Bryan Matuskey
and Kim Kapin will share their experiences working
in the mainstream as well as offering tips on
how aspiring content-makers can carve out a
creative and profitable niche for themselves in
exciting new areas.
Kapin is currently the marketing and communications
director at Yavapai College, but is also
a veteran writer, director and producer. Bryan
Workshops
Invisible Art/Invisible Artist
Thursday, July 21, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Presenter: Tom Finan
The editor is often the unsung hero of the film world. Editors get to tell the story
of a film and their contribution is essential to the final product of a theatrical,
television and animated feature film. Tom will discuss the physical workflow
necessary to create what we finally watch at home on our television or in the
theater. Learn more about how editors contribute to the art, craft and technology
of filmmaking.
Tom Finan has worked for over 4 decades as an editor in television and film. His
credits include The Lion King, Platoon, Hercules and Stuart Little, among many others.
Screenwriting: I’ve Written a Script, Now What?
Friday, July 22, 10:00 – 11:00 am
Presenter: Philip Sedgwick
Without being a Hollywood insider, what can you do to get your script in circulation and consideration?
You will learn about screenwriting from a veteran and also have the opportunity to register
to win a copy of "Movie Magic Screenwrier". Philip Sedgwick started out his writing career at a
reality TV show, Everything Entrepreneur, which aired on a non network Arizona station. His second
screenplay effort, Neon Cactus, was a quarter-finalist in the 1990 Nicholl Fellowship and a finalist in
the 2011 Amsterdam Film Festival. Philip’s latest film, Mirage, at Zabul Province won Best Short Film
at the 2013 Prescott Film Festival.
RED Camera Demo
Friday, July 22, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Presenter: Colin Glenn
RED Digital Cinema was founded in 2005 by Jim
Jannard, who had previously founded Oakley. The
company started with a small group of entrepreneurs
in a warehouse who wanted to build affordable,
high-end digital video cameras and believed
that 4K video was the future of digital image capture. The RED One
was arguably the first affordable camera that provided filmmakers
customizable features and out-of-the-box functionality with
the “feature film quality” known to much more expensive 35mm
film. Films shot on RED include The Martian, Straight Outta Compton,
Jurastic World, Avatar 2, Transformers: The Last Knight, Pirates of the
Caribbean. TV programs include
House of Cards, Better Call Saul, The
Man in the High Castle and Game of
Thrones. Need we say more? Yes we
do! The Yavapai College Film and
Media Arts Program will be accepting
delivery of two RED cameras in
the fall.
Come see a demo of this amazing
camera by Colin Glenn, Road
Warrior, RED Digital Cinema.
Storytelling, the Humanities and
Filmmaking
Sunday, July 24, 1:00 – 2:00 pm
COMMUNITY ROOM
Presenter: Dr. Suzanne Waldenberger
Martin Scorsese says, "Young people
need to understand that not all images
are out there to be consumed like,
you know, fast food and then forgotten.
We need to educate them to
understand the difference between
moving images that engage their
humanity and their intelligence, and
moving images that are just selling
them something.”
Join Dr. Suzanne Waldenberger as
she discusses the importance of storytelling
and how storytelling engages
the humanities in strong screenplays.
The workshop is presented in part by
Special Sneak Peek Screenings
La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast)
Tuesday, July 19, 7 pm (YCPAC)
We are proud to present one of the most
beautiful films we have had the opportunity to
screen in La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast).
This French production is visually stunning. The
costumes and sets alone are enough to make
this film worth seeing. But they are backed
up with outstanding performances by Vincent
Cassel (The Beast) and Léa Seydoux (Belle).
They breathe new life into one of the most enduring
love stories in this can’t miss film! Also
screening will be the short film Todo lo demás
(Everything Else). Both are foreign language
films featuring English subtitles.
Big Voice
Thursday, July 21, 7 pm (YCPAC)
An inspiring feature documentary about a year in the life of a
demanding high school choir director who pushes his students to
become “one big voice”. This film celebrates the importance of the
fine arts to the educational process and the difference one teacher
can make in the lives of students. Big Voice has won awards
for Best Documentary Feature at the New Filmmakers of Los
Angeles Best of 2015 Awards, Best US Premiere Documentary at
the Heartland Film Festival, and Best Family Feature at the South
Dakota Film Festival.
Director Varda Bar-Kar will be in attendance and will answer your
questions following the film.
Lives Well Lived (Work in Progress)
Saturday, July 23, 10 am (YCPAC)
This outstanding documentary asks the
question “What is a Life Well Lived?” This
film uses interviews with people between 75
and 100 and asks them this crucial question.
While they all have lived well, the filmmakers
discover that the road to that elusive goal
is not always the same. A film filled with
wisdom and wit you won’t want to miss. This
film is screening as a work in progress.
Francesco Pannofino. Martin
Umbach. Tamer Karadagli. Marco
Antonio Costa. What do these
men have in common? They are
the international voices of George
extraordinary music within the
context of a public school. This film
are important. They are more than
acting, painting or singing. Arts can
be used to impart life skills and life
lessons. Moreover, this film shows
how good teachers of any subject
Volunteers
We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers that have made
the Prescott Film Festival possible for the past seven years. Would you like to
be a part of the team? The Prescott Film Festival is run by volunteers, from the
imagineering of the fest each year, to running the numbers, writing grants,
choosing films and event planning! Left brain? Right brain? The Prescott Film
Festival has a spot for you!
As we head into planning the 2017 fest, (8th annual!) here are many opportunities
- especially for leadership positions. The fest will be moving a bit earlier
in the Summer next year - June 11 - 17, 2017. That means a tighter schedule for
festival prep. Some of the positions we are looking to fill:
Volunteer Coordinator
Grant Coordinator
Tech Team
Marketing Coordinator
and more!
If you would like to join us email info@PrescottFilmFestival.com or go to
prescottfilmfestival.com/volunteer-news/ for more information.
Hope to see you on Team PFF!
