Principal’s Words
校 ⻑⾧長 的 話
Since the School’s establishment in 2002, CKY has built a reputation as pioneers in the field of
education, where emphasis is placed on bilingual, joyful and holistic learning. The 13th edition of the
CKY Newsletter showcases a few of the many ways in which our innovative approach to education is
brought to life. New ways of thinking and fresh perspectives in tackling today’s problems and challenges
are within the remit not only of our thriving STEM and design technology departments. Every subject
within CKY continuously builds on existing progress by implementing new or improved initiatives to raise
standards and achievements yet higher. Far from resting on our laurels, pushing the boundaries of what
can be achieved is a common characteristic of both our students and teachers. Our World Classroom
programme, and the rich array of extra-curricular activities highlighted in the 13th edition, also provides
opportunities for students to think creatively and gain new insights through the process of reflection.
The CKY Newsletter is intended to update our whole community on recent news and events taking place
across our bustling school campus. The 13th edition is no different in highlighting auspicious occasions,
such as our 17th Anniversary Open Day, the success of which is a testament to close collaboration
between our teachers, parents, students and alumni. Our Alumni network grows in number each year,
and the CKY Newsletter will always devote a space for notable former students to share their
experiences since leaving school, as well as their advice for current students.
Although our school day is scheduled to end in the afternoon, learning often continues well into the
evening, and new ‘Nights’ which fill our monthly calendars are featured in the 13th edition. Our first ever
Reading Night at CKY proved to be hugely popular, illustrating how newly launched overnight camps are
helping our students to discover a passion for reading.
From House Competitions to seasonal parties and Science Night, the CKY Newsletter captures only
some of the diversity of life as a member of our school community. The CKY Newsletter offers only a
snapshot of the vibrancy of our close-knit community, a community which we can all feel proud to be a
part of. Enjoy!

A Torrent of Tumultuous Fun
16th March, 2019
As the sun crested on March 16th
and its rays kissed Po Leung Kuk
Choi Kai Yau’s school halls,
schools of koi and salmon
prepared for their up river swim -
their reward, a transformative
experience of what it means to do
Open Day right.
Each subject, a tributary, fed their
s t a l l s b r i g h t l y d e c k e d w i t h
captivating prizes and garnished
with all the original trimmings of an
esteemed estuary sat, welcoming
the scores of parents and children
eager to be merry and erode away
at the rainbow coloured spoils.
Amidst the joyous chaos of the
bubbling queues for an ardent
chance of prize-winning glory,
screams of victory rat-a-tat-tatted
throughout the hallowed halls as
prize after prize disappeared into
the gaping arms of ever glistening,
gasping, smiling, children.
The jocund camaraderie and
games the stalls provided were
merely the first wave of fun! Loftier
crests overflowed in the form of the
grand inauguration of the STEM
b u s , a n d l i v e s h o w s t h a t
showcased our students’ varied
finesse in academia, sports, and
music. A feast for the eyes, a
titillation for the ears, and a growth
for the soul, as parents were
drowning in such a fantastical
d i s p l a y o f s t u d e n t t a l e n t .
Prospective parents frothed at the
chance for their own offspring to
j o i n t h e s e s a c r e d h a l l s o f
pioneering educational excellence
and the question of the day that
burbled through the bourse was,
“Does your child go to school
here?”
Swashbuckling around a sun
soaked school is an appetite
coaxing task, and Pizza Express
reprised its role as the sole
distributor of gourmet pizzas in the
m e s s h a l l w i t h t h e s a m e
resounding success that has
echoed previous years as parents
and children swam to queue up.
Despite this, the canteen was also
an exceptional hit, in no large part
due to the overwhelming popularity
of Pizza Express, and therefore
still had a niche market.
An oft perennial problem when
swimming upriver is that it
becomes narrower the closer to
the head one gets. Traffic has
plagued our Open Day in years
past and this year has been no
different despite the Herculean
improvements. Some of these
improvements included ramping up
the number of shuttle buses that
serviced our esteemed guests to
and from Tai Wai, Kowloon Tong,
and Prince Edward which departed
with military precision every 15
minutes on the dot. Our friendly
neighbourhood police officers
assisted us by taking manual
control of the traffic lights on Tai Po
road to ease congestion.
When the last prizes were being
fished away by ecstatic children
flip flopping about with their
parents in line, the cleanup ensued
with equally great gusto as staff
members continued to gasp their
last, great breaths, drowning in the
success of another great Open
Day.

STEM Oculus VR Seminar &
Workshop
New technologies push boundaries where Virtual Reality and
social media create untold opportunities for learning
“No boundaries” Virtual Reality (VR), hosted by Facebook, is a major event organized by two US
technology firms - Oculus and Facebook. The event provided an opportunity to discuss the
implementation of VR education as well as the role of VR in the future. It was truly a once-in-alifetime
experience, as not only did we visit the headquarters of Facebook in Hong Kong Central
Business District, we were also able to learn more about how VR is able to assist in teaching
through utilizing technology like never before. VR enables a much more vivid presentation of
everything, limited only by the boundaries of our imagination/ Simulations, scenarios, or even
interactive classrooms especially for STEM which were thought to impossible are now open and
available to be implemented. I cannot help but think about the possibilities for the future, and the
infinite potential that VR has in radically changing the education of the future.

Inspiring ideas incubated
during Y7 Singapore Study Tour
Building On the Foundation of Ideas We Used To Believe In
Our world is rapidly progressing. The emergence of new technology becomes more frequent, carrying our society into a
whirlwind of change and evolution. Innovation is an element that is crucial to our fast-paced world, helping us unveil
discoveries and achieve breakthroughs.
During our study tour to Singapore, we witnessed numerous avant-garde examples of innovation in the world. One of the
most significant examples of innovation was the learning methods during our visit to Commonwealth School, where we
conducted a project on the topic: How different is Land use Planning in Hong Kong and Singapore? The content wasn’t the
most innovative aspect of the project; it was the one-of-a-kind teaching and learning methods of Commonwealth Secondary
School that really caught our attention and opened our minds. To first provide us with an insight to Singapore’s land use
planning, Commonwealth Secondary school accompanied us on a field trip to the Singapore Discovery Center. There, we took
our time marvelling at Singapore’s diverse architecture, and learning how in the city state different land uses have been
merged together as one. After our trip through the Discovery Center, we were then required to complete a mini-project
investigating and exploring the differences between Hong Kong and Singapore’s land use planning. We were separated into
groups, along with our Singapore buddies. Then we sat down in the school's gymnasium and began our work.
At that time, it seemed to be quite a primitive approach. No chairs, no tables? With the exception of air-conditioners,
everything else suggested that we were having a lesson in an undeveloped country. It was only us in the gymnasium, kneeling,
working on the hard, bare floor. But as time progressed and as our visit neared its end, we realized just how wrong we had
been. What we had been witnessing was the birth of a completely new teaching and learning method. Or rather, the revival of
what had been thought of as an outdated, old-fashioned way of learning. We assumed people had long since abandoned this
way of learning (learning on the floor) because of hygiene issues coupled with the fact that, at least on the surface, there is no
demonstrable benefit. However, we soon discovered that there is in fact numerous benefits from learning in an old fashioned
manner, with only a pen and a piece of paper. Gone were the long rows of tables and chairs, replaced by wide open space.
Since we were not constricted to the small areas of our tables, we could actively participate and communicate more with our
groupmates. The absence of tables and chairs also contributed to a livelier atmosphere, and we were able to complete the
project much more freely. This approach to learning was unprecedented for us. Ever since advanced learning technology was
introduced to our community, no one has ever thought of giving them up for something more minimalist.
It was a memorable experience to sit down on the floor with our Singaporean buddies and work together. We were able to
communicate well, complete our project with ease, and at the same time, make a few new friends. In Singapore we learned a
valuable lesson: sometimes the best innovation is innovation built on the foundation of ideas we used to believe in.

Innovating bright ideas for a better world at the
World Scholar’s Cup
10th March 2019
Innovation is a mandatory and fundamental element of success. From
President Obama to Albert Einstein, from Malala Yousafzai to Antman,
they all agreed that without the innovative efforts of individuals, our world
would not evolve.
‘Innovation’ sounds like a term fit only for science. A pen and a paper
would never bring about innovation, could it? But, through the World
Scholar’s Cup (WSC) curriculum and competition, these simple tools can
innovate!
Given eight heavy booklets, all containing articles on various subjects,
from atheism to the meat rain, and even discussion on Star Wars,
superheroes, orphans, and Mona Lisa. Knowing more historical events and
current affairs broadens students’ horizons, and understanding different
perspectives allows students to think in creative and unique ways. Thus,
those of us who participate in the World Scholar’s Cup contribute to society
by opening up fascinating discussions.
This year’s theme: A World on the Margins, refers to how certain groups of
people are being discriminated against, stereotyped, and excluded. Scholars
are challenged to think differently. We must generate alternatives, arguing
for both pros and cons, and walk in the shoes of others. These methods
reveal how WSC brings innovative ideas worldwide, allowing students to
investigate their surroundings more thoroughly, and, potentially, improving
our world for the future.
Innovation is not just included in the curriculum. WSC innovates and
supports the act of learning itself. In fact, WSC is a perfect opportunity for
students to learn more about this world that we all occupy. Surely that is
why, even though it's an extracurricular activity, students are always
passionate to join.
One of the reasons includes students wanting to learn more about the
world. WSC does not only tell us what is going on in the world, it shows
us. After we qualified, as one of the top 20 teams, we can proceed to the
global round. In June this year, we will be going to Beijing. This is another
opportunity for us to learn about the Chinese culture.
The Global Round and the Tournament of Champions are both held in
other regions/countries, therefore students can explore these other
countries. This learning experience is important to learn and innovate.
Unlike some academic competitions, WSC is endless fun! We interact with
other scholars from all around the world. We make friends. We perform
our talents. We share our thoughts on different events. Accordingly and
inevitably, the interaction between scholars yields innovation and bright
ideas.

在 我 們 學 習 之 旅 的 最 後 ⼀ 天 , 我 們 快 快 樂 樂 地 來 到 餐 館 。 因 為 是 最 後 ⼀ 天 了 , 我 們 ⼤ 家 都 抓 緊 時 間 談 天 說 地 ,
抓 緊 時 間 拍 ⾃ 拍 , 留 下 回 憶 , 整 個 場 地 的 氣 氛 很 熱 鬧 。
正 當 ⼤ 家 談 得 津 津 樂 道 時 , 我 媽 媽 突 然 低 聲 說 :「 桌 …… 桌 …… 桌 ⼦ 在 震 動 啊 ——」 我 的 ⼼ 臟 怦 怦 直 跳 ,⼿⼼
出 汗 ,⼼ 裡 只 有 兩 個 字 : 地 震 ! 突 然 , 整 塊 地 開 始 搖 動 了 。 整 個 場 地 神 奇 地 變 得 寂 靜 , 下 ⼀ 秒 ,⼤ 家 ⿑ 聲 尖 叫 …… 就
在 這 慌 忙 的 時 刻 , 地 震 停 下 了 。⼤ 家 ⽤ 感 激 、 感 動 的 眼 神 看 著 彼 此 。 我 跑 去 好 朋 友 的 飯 桌 , 看 ⾒ 她 平 安 無 事 ,⽴ 即 放
下 ⼼ 頭 ⼤⽯。 當 她 看 到 我 時 候 , 她 也 ⽤ 相 同 的 眼 神 看 着 我 。 我 們 頭 貼 頭 , 開 ⼼ 地 擁 抱 了 ⼀ 下 , 享 受 了 當 時 的 幸 福 。
我 ⼗ 分 喜 歡 這 次 學 習 之 旅 ,⽽ 這 次 地 震 也 為 它 添 加 了 別 樣 的 感 受 。 經 過 這 趟 旅 程 , 我 和 朋 友 的 感 情 變 深 厚 了 。
這 真 是 有 驚 無 險 的 難 忘 之 旅 。

Year 4
Beijing Study Tour
Two students reflect on their unforgettable experience in
the timeless city of Beijing during Year 4 Study tour on
7-11 April 2019.
The whole of Year 4 went to Beijing this year. We
arrived on 7 th April and came back on 11 th April.
We went to the Great Wall, Summer Palace,
Hutong and went to old Beijing to make
dumplings.
The most exciting place was definitely the Great
Wall of China. Even though we only saw a tiny
section of the Great Wall and we didn’t climb that
high, you could still feel that this wall was very
old. You had to try not to think about the fact you
might be stepping on dead bodies. The only part I
didn’t like was climbing down, it was way too
scary. I had no idea how other students were just
jogging down the steps.
We also went to the Forbidden City. The reason it
was so memorable was because it was simply
huge. We learned lots of facts about the
Forbidden City. The gigantic, golden bowls were
for filling with water in case of a fire. We also
learned that it contained the largest wood
structure on Earth, 12 stories tall!
During this trip, not only did we learn many facts,
we also learned new skills. Other than the lack of
sleep, I think this trip was very enjoyable. I can’t
wait for next year’s study tour!
On the 7 th April, the whole of Year 4 went to the Beijing. The
study tour was a special event for students to learn outside
CKY. We went to lots of famous places and I had a great time.
On the first day, we went to Olympic Green Park to see the
Bird’s Nest (No, I’m not joking!) and the Aquatic Centre. We
took lots of photos. We also went to Qian Men Street. There
were lots of Beijing food stalls and I even ate a yummy lamb
skewer! Dinner was fantastic too! What a great day!
There were many memories on the second day too. We went
to Beijing School and believe me, it was one of the best school
days I have experienced! The students welcomed us heartily, I
love this school!
Day three was the best school day ever! I had PE lessons with
other Beijing students. They were tall and athletic and their PE
lesson was the hardest!!!
That night, there was a Kung Fu Show. It was awesome! I
enjoyed it very much. It not only showed Kung Fu, it also told a
story. We even had front row seats!
We went to the Great Wall on the fourth day. It actually wasn’t
as tiring as I thought it would be. It felt great when the wind
blew in my hair. I even took a selfie with Mr Tedstone!
On the fifth day we went to the Temple of Heaven but I wasn’t
that happy because we were leaving. This is my first study tour
and it was great, I look forward to the next one!

The sense of belonging to a community - CKY Houses
CKY House Competition
House Captains from a few of our Houses share their experiences of recent House
events and competitions, especially the upcoming CKY Idol, which the whole school
community is eagerly anticipating..!
Mozart
Risen from the ashes like a phoenix - Mozart House
The second term was filled with
house events, all of which sparked
enthusiasm and ardor from the
house. What touched me the most
was the effort that went into each of
these house events, especially
during the preparation stages,
especially with the big events such
as sports day, cheerleading as well
as CKY Idol. I saw how everyone
got excited before these events took
place and it really was a joy to see. I
felt really proud, during the moments
when students not only cheered for
their house mates, but also for
people from other houses because
this was when sportsmanship really
shone through. Cheerleading is an
event that arguably students put the
most effort into, and when
cheerleaders get the support from
other houses, it really makes the
practice worth it, that was what
really mattered, not the results, that
perhaps could be said for all the
other events as well. These events
sparked friendly competition, but it
also created elation that spread
around the school and that really
was a pleasure to watch and
experience.

Handel
The house events this year have been one of the most exciting ones yet, and undoubtedly a large portion of
it goes to our dearest house members. When we host and coordinate events such as house quizzes or
cheerleading, we never expected this magnitude of enthusiasm being met by our Handellians, and it came
as a shock and inspired gratitude that so many people care and love, and pour their utmost efforts into
these events. For cheerleading per say, despite the excruciatingly condensed schedule and a tedious thing
called rehearsals, our members handled everything with a brilliant smile on their face and the spirit of a true
competitor. The cheer itself was spectacular as we watched and observed our hard work paying off, and the
happiness that radiates from the performance ground. It’s seeing the spirit of all four houses melting
together into this beautiful harmony that fuels our drive to do better as captains, and to give the best
experience to our house members to enjoy the excitement, the adrenaline, the joy and the love that comes
with a house competition.

Beethoven
It was a roller-coaster kind of year for Beethoven
in terms of competition results. There were
successful events, like the House Shout. After
deciding on doing charity work for our Christmas
video while we sing carols that unite our
community, we found our drive to execute our
performance to the utmost of our ability. We
believe that, with our House Shout performance,
many were influenced with our kind hearts and
truly understood the meaning of Christmas, the
giving of love. After Christmas, we had Sports Day
and Cheerleading, where we performed less
ideally. Although a lot of efforts were put in the
preparation, there were disappointments when we
found out we got 4th for Cheerleading. However,
all the after school practices were not in vain, we
grew as a team, united as a house. And the defeat
had only made us stronger -- winning both the
house quiz and chinese debate competition
afterwards. Here’s to more awesome events!

This year is my second time as one of the finalists of Science Fair. Gaining experience from last
year, I’m not nervous at all. I enjoyed sharing my work to parents and students when they came
to my booth. I’m really excited that they showed interest in my project. It is a good experience
for me to learn something new through the process of researching, experimenting and presenting
my science projects. I’m very grateful to CKY for hosting a Science Fair and providing a
learning platform for us. I hope this tradition will be continued every year!

記 杭 州 學 習 團 交 流
綠 ⾊ 傳 遞 , 為 愛 播 種 。
這 是 ⼀ 棵 樹 能 帶 來 的 ⼒ 量 ── 我 終
於 在 這 次 上 海 杭 州 學 習 團 體 會 得 到 。
在 杭 州 學 軍 中 學 裡 , 我 們 共 同 上 了
兩 節 課 , 我 深 深 體 會 到 兩 地 學 習 ⽂ 化
的 不 同 , 可 是 也 發 現 到 那 裡 的 ⽼ 師 依
然 淳 淳 善 誘 , 同 學 們 也 依 然 熱 愛 學
習 。
在 臨 別 之 前 , 我 們 更 有 幸 參 與 ⼀ 個
植 樹 活 動 , 親 ⾝ 體 會 植 樹 的 樂 趣 。
與 我 共 同 植 樹 的 是 ⼀ 位 戴 著 眼 鏡 、
留 著 ⾧ 頭 髮 的 ⾼ 年 級 學 ⽣, 在 閒 聊 中
我 終 於 得 以 深 ⼊ 了 解 那 裡 的 學 習 環 境
和 觀 念 。 他 們 有 各 種 各 樣 的 科 ⽬, 發
掘 學 ⽣ 們 的 興 趣 , 讓 每 位 學 ⽣ 都 熱 沖
於 學 習 , 喜 歡 上 學 。
種 下 ⼀ 棵 樹 , 植 下 ⼀ 個 希 望 。⼀ 棵
樹 何 其 渺 ⼩, 可 是 只 要 每 個 ⼈ 都 願 意
為 環 保 出 ⼀ 分 ⼒, 共 同 建 設 綠 ⾊ 地
球 , 那 怕 只 是 種 下 ⼀ 棵 樹 , 便 已 能 幫
助 保 護 我 們 的 地 球 。 在 學 軍 學 校 中 植
下 的 這 棵 樹 , 便 如 植 下 ⼀ 個 保 護 地 球
的 希 望 。
種 下 ⼀ 棵 樹 , 植 下 ⼀ 段 友 誼 。 在 植
樹 的 過 程 中 , 我 們 和 當 地 的 學 ⽣ 得 以
交 流 , 雖 然 交 流 的 時 間 如 此 短 暫 , 卻
也 如 此 寶 貴 。 我 深 信 , 我 們 所 植 下 的
友 誼 ⼀ 定 能 得 以 保 存 、 得 以 維 繫 。
種 下 ⼀ 棵 樹 , 植 下 ⼀ 場 回 憶 。 對 我
⽽⾔, 這 次 的 植 樹 活 動 是 我 唯 ⼀⼀ 次
種 樹 的 體 驗 。 成 功 植 下 樹 苗 的 那 ⼀
刻 , 我 永 遠 不 會 忘 記 。 那 種 歡 愉 、 那
種 美 好 , 是 那 麼 獨 特 、 那 麼 特 別 。
現 在 回 想 起 來 , 我 們 不 但 種 下 了 ⼀
棵 樹 , 這 次 植 樹 的 經 驗 更 是 深 深 的 植
⼊ 了 我 們 所 有 ⼈ 的 ⼼ 中 。 無 論 這 棵 樹
是 植 下 了 希 望 、 植 下 了 友 誼 , 又 或 者
是 回 憶 , 相 信 對 每 個 ⼈⽽⾔, 這 棵 樹
是 最 獨 特 的 , 也 是 最 值 得 懷 念 的 。

Primary Debate
The English Debate Team participated in the CKY Debating Challenge. It was held in 30th
March. The different teams had to go through matches against different schools. They get points in
each match and the two teams with the highest scores move on to the finals. When Mr Dyers, the
host of the Debating Challenge announced that CKY Affirmative Team were in the finals, I was happy
and nervous because we had to debate in the auditorium with many people in the audience. Our
opponent was Mary Knoll Convent School. The debate was exciting and interesting and I tried my
very best. At last when the results were announced, Mary Knoll won the Debating Challenge but I
was still pleased that we came in second. I didn’t expect that we would come so far. The CKY
Debating Challenge was a very rewarding experience and I learned a lot about debate. I will cherish
the skills that I learned from the debate challenge and use it in the future.

Visual Arts Exhibition
Every year the Primary Art Department looks forward to the art exhibition at the Hong Kong Cultural
Center. This year our annual art exhibition was held May 2-9. This event is a chance for our team of
talented art teachers to showcase the artwork of our creative and talented students at CKY. It is highly
competitive and quite an honor to have your artwork selected for this show. It's an opportunity for the
public to view the wonderful imaginations and creativity of our students. Each project showcased what
the students have been studying this school year. The show was a visual delight for all! We are very lucky
to be able to display our student's artwork in such a beautiful public space. Well done everyone!

Year 1 students were inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s
expressive use of line and paint. Take a look at Harley
Chan’s painting from 1B. He painted yellow on top of
green for the sky, and he carefully scraped lines
around the sun to represent it light.
Year 4 students learned about printmaking and were
inspired by American contemporary artist, Sue Coccia
and her animal illustrations. They created prints of
animals and filled each animal with patterns that
represent its habitat and the animal’s “spirit”. Look
closely at Carry Zheng’s work from 4C, the black and
white anaconda snake. It slithers quietly through the
foliage, camouflaged and ready for its next meal.

我 ⼀ 直 都 想 再 到 北 京 , 看 看 那 紅 墻 綠 ⽡ 的 宮 殿 , 看
看 那 ⿓ 盤 虎 踞 的 ⾧ 城 , 看 看 那 美 輪 美 奐 的 天 壇 , 看 看 那 左
拐 右 彎 的 胡 同 ……
今 年 , 我 ⾮ 常 榮 幸 可 以 登 上 中 國 語 ⽂ 菁 英 計 劃 的 舞
台 , 並 獲 得 ⾦ 獎 , 還 可 以 跟 諸 位 ⽂ 學 菁 英 到 北 京 交 流 。 以
前 , 我 對 北 京 的 印 象 只 停 留 於 她 是 中 國 的 ⾸ 都 , 是 著 名 的
⽂ 化 之 都 , 是 昔 ⽇ 的 皇 城 之 地 。 但 是 , 經 過 這 ⼀ 次 的 北 京
之 旅 , 我 不 ⽌ 看 到 北 京 的 歷 史 痕 跡 , 不 ⽌ 看 到 北 京 的 ⼤ 氣
傳 統 , 不 ⽌ 看 到 北 京 的 優 美 景 ⾊,⽽ 且 注 意 到 處 處 散 發 的
⼈ 情 味 和 漸 漸 追 上 的 創 新 腳 步 ……
步 ⼊ 北 京 的 第 五 ⼗ 七 中 學 , 令 我 驚 歎 的 是 那 ⼀ 棟 棟
的 教 學 樓 , 還 有 全 校 學 ⽣⼀ 起 做 早 操 的 壯 觀 景 象 , 以 及 師
⽣ 的 熱 情 招 待 。 在 校 ⾧ 和 ⽼ 師 的 帶 領 下 , 我 們 參 觀 了 他 們
的 校 園 。 在 圖 書 館 裡 , 令 我 印 象 深 刻 的 是 學 ⽣ 每 年 創 作 的
詩 集 、 語 ⽂ 記 錄 本 等 等 。 每 ⼀ 本 都 令 我 獲 益 良 多 , 讀 罷 ,
我 簡 直 不 敢 相 信 這 是 中 三 學 ⽣ 寫 的 詩 集 , 他 們 的 這 份 熱
誠 , 這 份 堅 持 , 令 我 ⾃ 愧 不 如 。 緊 接 著 , 我 們 參 觀 了 他 們
學 校 的 天 象 廳 , 就 如 ⾹ 港 的 迷 你 太 空 館 , 並 觀 看 了 他 們 創
作 的 太 空 影 ⽚, 程 度 堪 ⽐ 太 空 館 的 短 ⽚, 令 我 ⼤ 開 眼 界 。
之 後 , 我 們 到 7D 影 院 觀 看 了 7D 電 影 , 刺 激 的 場 景 令 我 不
禁 相 信 ⾃⼰ 到 了 迪 ⼠ 尼 樂 園 的 過 ⼭⾞ 體 驗 , 模 擬 ⾶⾏ 室 的
裝 備 更 是 令 我 開 闊 視 野 , 中 三 師 兄 耐 ⼼ 的 教 導 也 令 我 的 ⾶
⾏ 技 術 有 了 些 許 的 進 展 。 全 國 最 先 進 的 校 園 天 ⽂ 台 、 機 器

⼈ 實 驗 室 和 模 擬 駕 駛 室 , 無 論 是 培 養 興 趣 還 是 課 堂 內 的 知
識 園 地 , 都 成 為 了 學 ⽣ 們 創 新 能 ⼒ 的 開 發 基 地 。
除 了 ⾛ 進 北 京 的 第 五 ⼗ 七 中 學 校 舍 參 觀 , 最 ⼤ 的 得
益 便 是 與 該 校 ⽂ 學 菁 英 交 流 。 我 們 互 相 認 識 , 互 相 交 流 學
校 的 學 習 環 境 , 對 該 校 發 表 意 ⾒, 探 討 教 育 的 意 義 , 彼 此
好 不 愉 快 。 北 京 同 學 的 熱 情 和 友 善 , 令 我 ⼗ 分 難 忘 。 我 將
會 永 遠 記 得 他 們 的 校 訓 : 科 學 ,⽂ 明 , 勤 奮 , 創 新 , 他 們
成 功 實 現 了 ⽬ 標 , 真 正 做 到 了 弘 揚 傳 統 , 開 拓 創 新 。 離 開
了 北 京 的 第 五 ⼗ 七 中 學 , 我 的 確 學 到 了 很 多 , 不 但 是 語 ⽂
上 的 知 識 ,⽽ 是 他 們 勇 於 表 達 意 ⾒, 勵 精 圖 治 , 同 ⼼ 同 德
的 學 習 精 神 和 不 斷 改 進 , 不 停 創 新 的 ⽬ 標 。
第 ⼆ 天 , 我 們 到 了 北 京 市 的 重 點 中 學 --- 北 京 市 育 英
學 校 交 流 , 這 所 學 校 明 顯 ⽐ 第 五 ⼗ 七 中 學 更 ⼤ 規 模 。 陽 光

園 和 操 場 等 等 。⾛ 在 育 英 學 校 的 ⼩⽊ 橋 上 , 抬 頭 ⼀ 看 , 滿 樹 的 桃 花 , 綻 放 出 粉 紅
⾊ 的 花 卉 ,⼀ 陣 微 ⾵ 吹 過 , 桃 花 的 芳 ⾹ 撲 ⿐⽽ 來 , 引 得 ⿃ 雀 爭 栖 , 蜂 ⾶ 蝶 舞 。⽚

⽚ 桃 花 瓣 吹 落 在 地 , 令 我 陶 醉 在 粉 紅 ⾊ 的 海 洋 。 育 英 學 校 的 美 景 實 在 令 ⼈ 流 連 忘
返 。
參 觀 完 校 園 後 , 我 隨 著 同 學 的 帶 領 , 來 到 了 中 三 的 語 ⽂ 課 。 這 是 我 期 待 ⽽ 久
的 ⼀ 課 。⼀ 聲 「 起 」, 我 與 同 學 ⼀ 起 向 ⽼ 師 敬 禮 。⽼ 師 特 地 選 了 幾 篇 描 寫 花 朵 的
作 ⽂ 與 我 們 共 讀 , 還 記 得 ⽼ 師 那 抑 揚 頓 挫 的 聲 ⾳ 帶 領 全 班 朗 讀 課 ⽂, 然 後 ⼀⼀ 邀
同 學 講 解 課 ⽂ 的 意 思 , 令 我 們 淌 洋 在 ⽂ 中 的 情 景 。 在 ⼤ 家 清 脆 的 讀 書 聲 中 , 這 堂
語 ⽂ 課 結 束 了 。 北 京 市 育 英 學 校 古 ⾊ 古 ⾹ 的 校 舍 , 熱 愛 學 習 、 主 動 開 朗 的 培 養 ⽬
標 將 會 永 遠 刻 於 我 的 ⼼ 中 。
在 這 個 不 ⼀ 般 的 學 習 之 旅 , 我 有 機 會 ⼀ 嘗 北 京 的 學 ⽣ 校 園 ⽣ 活 。 參 觀 完 兩
所 學 校 , 我 對 北 京 的 學 校 有 了 更 深 的 了 解 。 學 ⽣ 語 ⽂⽔ 平 ⾼, 知 識 豐 厚 , 能 將 唐
詩 倒 背 如 流 , 令 我 ⼼⽣ 佩 服 。 但 更 重 要 的 是 , 北 京 師 ⽣ 的 不 斷 進 步 , 不 停 創 新 已
漸 漸 追 上 ⾹ 港 的 腳 步 。 北 京 學 校 亦 能 從 創 新 的 設 備 , 全 ⾯ 發 展 的 校 舍 , 吸 引 和 培
養 學 ⽣ 對 學 習 的 熱 誠 , 可 ⾒ 北 京 對 教 育 與 科 技 的 重 視 。 在 參 觀 北 京 名 勝 古 跡 的 這
幾 天 , 我 發 現 傳 統 的 四 合 院 民 舍 , 聞 名 中 外 的 古 跡 與 摩 登 的 ⾼ 樓 ⼤ 廈 在 北 京 和 諧
共 ⽣, 毫 無 違 和 感 。 這 也 讓 我 漸 漸 覺 悟 , 北 京 正 ⾛ 在 時 代 的 頂 端 , 她 正 在 以 ⾶ 速
發 展 的 速 度 成 為 ⾸ 屈 ⼀ 指 的 國 際 ⼤ 都 市 , 從 教 育 , 再 到 科 技 , 還 有 更 多 …… 北 京
對 發 展 的 投 ⼊、 熱 誠 , 已 在 悄 悄 地 超 越 ⾹ 港 。 我 期 待 ⾹ 港 亦 能 保 持 原 有 的 奮 進 精
神 , 對 社 會 , 對 ⼤ 家 , 對 ⾃⼰ 抱 有 希 望 , 抱 有 熱 誠 , 才 能 改 進 , 才 能 創 新 , 才 能
開 創 更 加 輝 煌 燦 爛 的 明 天 。

閱 讀 之 夜
—— 願 每 ⼀ 顆 有 希 望 的 種 ⼦, 都 有 勇 氣 破 ⼟⽽ 出
關 於 「 閱 讀 之 夜 」 活 動 的 初 衷 , 當 然 是 為 了 推
廣 閱 讀 。 讓 ⼀ 直 以 來 對 閱 讀 充 滿 熱 忱 的 孩 ⼦, 獲 得 ⼀ 份
特 殊 的 肯 定 和 獎 勵 ; 讓 這 所 ⼀ 直 強 調 閱 讀 的 校 園 , 更 添
⼀ 份 以 閱 讀 為 尚 的 氛 圍 ; 讓 我 們 在 ⾯ 對 數 字 化 碎 ⽚ 閱 讀
可 能 取 代 傳 統 閱 讀 的 進 程 中 , 做 出 ⼀ 些 「 保 守 的 」、
「 後 進 的 」⾏ 為 , 換 來 ⼀ 些 思 考 和 篤 定 。
我 想 這 些 ⽬ 標 和 更 多 的 希 望 , 都 實 現 了 。 因 為 作 為
親 ⾝ 體 驗 的 我 , 感 受 到 了 那 ⼀ 晚 的 魔 ⼒。 直 到 現 在 , 每
每 想 起 「 閱 讀 」 之 夜 , 沒 有 想 到 準 備 時 的 勞 累 緊 張 , 只
有 那 些 美 好 的 畫 ⾯—— 孩 ⼦ 們 在 「 尋 寶 遊 戲 」 中 拿 著 電
筒 和 ⼩ 燈 , 奮 ⼒ 尋 找 ⼀ 本 本 圖 書 ; 在 睡 前 的 靜 讀 時 間 ,
迎 著 帳 篷 裡 ⼀ 盞 盞 ⼩ 燈 , 捧 著 ⾃⼰⼼ 愛 的 圖 書 , 安 靜 地
閱 讀 ; 圖 書 改 編 、 話 劇 表 演 中 認 真 的 樣 ⼦; 活 動 結 束
後 , 孩 ⼦ 們 還 不 忘 借 上 幾 本 書 , 或 互 相 推 薦 書 籍 ,⼀ 邊
看 ⼀ 邊 離 開 圖 書 館 …… 活 動 中 , 劉 校 ⾧ 和 王 主 任 都 ⿎ 勵
孩 ⼦ 們 繼 續 保 持 這 樣 良 好 的 閱 讀 習 慣 , 孩 ⼦ 們 也 ⼤ 聲 回
應 , 明 年 的 「 閱 讀 之 夜 」⼀ 定 再 參 加 !
「 真 好 。」 我 ⼼ 想 。 這 ⽚ 閱 讀 的 沃 ⼟, 經 過 了 劉 校
⾧ 和 ⽼ 師 們 這 麼 多 年 的 努 ⼒ 耕 耘 和 守 護 , 讓 無 數 對 閱 讀
抱 持 希 望 的 孩 ⼦, 都 能 茁 壯 成 ⾧ 起 來 。 這 過 程 並 不 是 ⾃
然 ⽽ 然 的 , 也 不 是 ⼀ 蹴 ⽽ 就 的 。
就 像 這 次 「 閱 讀 之 夜 」 的 籌 備 。18 個 ⼩ 時 的 活 動 ,
背 後 每 位 ⽼ 師 的 準 備 時 間 總 和 何 ⽌180⼩ 時 ? 去 年 開 學
之 時 , 王 主 任 已 將 「 閱 讀 之 夜 」 活 動 放 ⼊ 年 度 閱 讀 推 廣
計 畫 中 , 在 新 學 期 的 籌 備 會 議 上 , 就 跟 ⽼ 師 們 提 出 了 ⼤
致 的 設 想 。 之 後 又 是 ⼀ 系 列 與 英 ⽂ 部 、 圖 書 館 、 活 動 策
劃 、IT 等 等 部 ⾨ 的 溝 通 和 協 調 。 到 活 動 前 兩 個 ⽉, 校 園

學 、 活 動 流 程 的 確 定 與 物 資 準 備 、 圖 書 館 佈 置 、 場 地 安
排 ……⽼ 師 們 在 整 個 籌 備 過 程 中 盡 ⼼ 盡 ⼒, 就 算 因 為 活
動 細 節 ⽽ 產 ⽣ 的 分 歧 在 所 難 免 , 但 最 終 也 很 容 易 解 決 ,
因 為 我 總 會 聽 到 不 同 ⽼ 師 說 出 ⼀ 句 話 :「 為 了 孩 ⼦
們 。」
原 來 ,⽼ 師 們 也 有 那 希 望 。⽽ 在 CKY, 我 們 更 獲
得 了 為 希 望 ⽽ 放 ⼿ 努 ⼒ 的 勇 氣 。 珍 惜 我 們 所 擁 有 的 , 不
為 差 強 ⼈ 意 ⽽ 抱 怨 , 要 為 希 望 ⽽ 勇 往 直 前 。

Reading Night was very memorable and original, all whilst
maintaining an optimal balance between education and fun.
Amongst the many unforgettable and unique events was the
scavenger hunt. There, we had the opportunity to split up into
groups and collaborate to solve various interactive, yet
challenging puzzles scattered across CKY at night! Another
highlight of Reading Night was when we got to set up our
tents on our own, and slept in them in the library for the whole
night. It felt extraordinary getting to be amongst the first group
of students to sleep in the library. Even with my tent closed, I
could still sense the countless shelves of books right beyond
me, just in reach! Above all, I truly hope that Reading Night
will continuously be organized every year at CKY, allowing
more students to have the opportunity enjoy this original and
fun night, just as I did.

這 是 學 校 的 第 ⼀ 個 閲 讀 之 夜 , 感 謝 ⽼ 師 細 ⼼
地 籌 劃 活 動 , 既 有 作 者 教 我 們 尋 找 寫 作 的 靈 感 和 創
作 ⽅ 法 , 又 有 刺 激 的 尋 寶 游 戲 , 還 有 圖 書 館 的 紮 營
及 表 演 活 動 。 最 浪 漫 的 是 , 許 多 ⼩ 星 星 的 ⼩ 燈 飾 陪
伴 著 我 們 睡 覺 。 我 們 本 應 在 九 點 半 睡 覺 , 但 是 在 晚
上 12 點 , 我 們 卻 像 ⼩⽼⿏⼀ 樣 也 有 「 夜 晚 活 動 」。
猶 記 得 我 們 半 夜 玩 的 時 候 , 有 ⼈ 聽 到 ⽼ 師 ⾛ 過 來 巡
視 的 時 候 就 說 :「⾛⿁ 呀 !!」。 我 本 來 和 朋 友 的
帳 篷 很 近 的 , 但 是 因 爲 有 ⼀ 些 「 外 星 ⼈」 説 我 的 帳
篷 很 漂 亮 , 應 該 放 來 拍 照 , 所 以 他 們 「 綁 架 」 了 我
的 帳 篷 , 放 在 臨 近 圖 書 館 的 ⾨⼜。 很 幸 福 的 是 : 有
⼀ 些 七 年 級 的 同 學 做 我 鄰 居 , 我 就 放 ⼼ 了 。 我 最 喜
歡 的 活 動 就 是 ⾃ 創 故 事 表 涳 活 動 : 我 們 要 改 ⼀ 個 故
事 的 結 尾 , 然 後 要 做 ⼀ 個 短 的 表 演 。 我 的 組 做 了 ⿍
⿍ 有 名 的 ⼩ 説 哈 利 波 特 。 我 們 ⼀ 開 始 不 是 那 麽 合
作 , 但 最 後 我 們 也 乖 乖 的 聼 ⼤ 家 。 我 們 最 後 也 贏
了 , 還 送 每 ⼈⼀ 本 書 ! 謝 謝 劉 校 ⾧ 為 我 們 舉 辦 這 個
既 充 實 又 有 趣 的 活 動 。

Reading night was definitely one of the most unforgettable memories I’ve ever had in my 12 years of life. Everything from
the scavenger hunt to sleeping in tents with your best friends was truly memorable. After dinner, we met an amazing
author who taught us how to write books and told us about what her inspirations were when she was writing all of her
books. Then we went on a scavenger hunt all around the school, we ran up and down the staircases, we even went inside
Principal Lau’s office. It was a great experience.
At night, we had our silent reading time in our tents, the peace and quiet throughout the whole library was
undoubtedly beautiful, with the fairy lights all over the library, and it was spectacular. As bedtime drew near, lights were
starting to turn off. And as Ms Tammy said, even though it was really late at night, there was still some chit chat going all
around the library, we were surprised that the teachers didn't shush us and told us to go to bed. It was really enjoyable to
spend the night with your friends and schoolmates and we all bonded over our love for books.
Me and my friend woke up quite early to the amazing sight of fairy lights flashing and dangling from the stairwell,
it looked so elegant and just breathtaking. We were surprised to see that there were teachers sitting outside the library,
ensuring our safety. When almost everyone was awake, we did our morning exercise and we danced a silly but fun dance
and even ran laps in the basketball court. It was a great way to start the day. Then we had our breakfast. The meal itself
was nothing special, but the time all of us spent together was remarkable.
After breakfast we performed a recreation of a specific book, in my group, we chose Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone. We enjoyed planning and rehearsing our performance, and were cracking jokes and laughing like
maniacs, although we all were from different year levels, we bonded very well together. Our group even won the small
contest we had. I would like to thank all the teachers and librarians for making so much effort to make Reading Night
unique and fun. I would also like to thank Principal Lau for agreeing to this idea of having Reading Night. Without
Principal Lau’s agreement to this, it wouldn't have been possible to let all of us stay overnight at school in the library.

Have you experienced a time when you were reading a marvellous book, then suddenly the librarian told you to
leave because the library was going to close? Have you ever imagined that one day you could read books overnight in the
library? As a book worm, I was one of those dreamers, and my wish came true, on the 9th of March, it was PLK CKY’s first
time organizing an activity called Reading Night.
I was overjoyed by this news and signed up immediately. To my surprise, I got picked out of 300 people who
signed up. When that day came, I quickly packed my bags, tent, headlight, and my favorite Chinese and English novels and
went to school. At school, I could not even stop thinking about the activities during Reading Night. Finally, the time came,
we were sorted into groups and we played a school scavenger hunt. After the scavenger hunt, we went into our tents and
started to read although we chatted for a bit. The whole night was so memorable!
In the morning we did a morning run and some more exercise. After breakfast we started to plan our drama which
was about a Chinese book called《 我 的 媽 媽 是 精 靈 》. Thanks to our amazing groupmates and teacher—Mr. Wang Wei
Ming who made our drama performance very successful, we even won the best performance group for Chinese drama.
After Reading Night, I learned how to cooperate and do well with my teammates even when I do not know them.
I also discovered that reading involves a lot of things like performance, drama, listening and all sorts of skills. I am glad I
joined Reading Night and I strongly encourage students next year to join this fun and exciting activity.

I am Adrian and I graduated from
CKY in 2014 and am currently a
final year medical student at the
University of Hong Kong.
CKY and IB have prepared me
well for medical education in
many ways. First of all, the use
of English in most subjects
taught was quite important, since
in medicine, the most widely
used language is also English.
No matter whether its lectures,
ward round, case presentation or
discussion with tutors and
professors, English is the
language of communication, and
being able to communicate
fluently and confidently using
English will greatly impress
tutors and professors. Mandarin
is also being increasingly used
nowadays in the hospital setting,
as there are an increasing
n u m b e r o f p a t i e n t s f r o m
mainland China and some of
them can only communicate in
Mandarin. However having that
said, HKU has also stressed the
importance of Cantonese, since
most patients one will meet in
hospital settings are Cantonesespeakers.
It has been stressed
that students who cannot
communicate well in Cantonese
would not be considered, and
some parts of the admission
interview are specifically carried
out to check for Cantonese
proficiency.
Secondly, some subjects in IB
have laid sound foundation for
me during the pre-clinical years.
During the pre-clinical years, one
has to study basic sciences in
details, for example anatomy,
physiology (basically meaning
the way in which the body
functions/works), biochemistry,
pharmacology, etc., and having
s t u d i e d b o t h b i o l o g y a n d
chemistry higher level helps
massively in understanding and
comprehending the
aforementioned difficult, complex
and rather boring topics. IB
chemistry and biology higher
level are arguably more difficult
a n d i n - d e p t h t h a n i t s
counterparts in the DSE local
curriculum, and these gave me a
head start compared with my
local classmates in medicine.
Thirdly, many elements of the IB
l e a r n e r p r o f i l e w o u l d b e
necessary for the study of
medicine. For instance one
must always think and reflect,
since doctors are actually
detectives; they are always
trying to discover what is wrong
with the patients through traces,
and the traces can be gathered
using history taking, physical
examination and investigations
such as blood tests, urine tests
and imaging studies. One must
also be open-minded, as we are
always taught that being too
narrow-minded could lead to
m i s s i n g o t h e r p o t e n t i a l
diagnoses and the patient might
die as a result. Being openminded
would also mean
listening and accepting others’
criticism and constructive
feedback, including from both
teachers and fellow classmates.
One must never be complacent
and should readily accept his or
her shortcomings. Be humble or
be humbled.

Last but not least, I had a deeper understanding regarding social issues from the CAS and the challenge week
programs of IB, for instance the two challenge week programs I joined were about environmental protection and
sustainable development, and refugee welfare in Hong Kong. As a medical student and future medical practitioner,
solid knowledge regarding contemporary social issues is also just as important as doctors are also part of the
society. An ancient proverb in China said it best: the bad doctor merely treats the disease; the mediocre doctor
treats the patient; the best doctor treats the country ( 上 醫 醫 國 、 中 醫 醫 ⼈人、 下 醫 醫 病 ). As doctors are arguably in
one of the most prestigious and respected of occupations, one should be vocal about social issues and problems,
and should help those who are underprivileged. This cannot be achieved if a medical practitioner merely hides in
the laboratory or library without learning what is going on in society.
Finally I have some advice for any student who wishes to apply for medicine. Studying medicine is a long process,
and the six years of medical school is merely a journey. The journey does not end at graduation and in fact
continues until one retires, since medicine is an ever-evolving subject and one must learn continuously life-long in
order to be up-to-date to provide the best care for patients. This process would be painfully boring and dull for
those who are not truly interested in medicine, so NEVER study medicine just because someone else wants you to.
For those who are truly interested in medicine, unless you are extremely clever with photographic memory, you will
spend most of your time studying; so do prepare yourself mentally for making sacrifices in which you will
sometimes find yourself drowning in the sea of knowledge while others are busy playing and traveling. Having that
said, once you have entered the field of medicine, when you receive sincere gratitude and the beaming smile from
the patients, you will realize that such satisfaction is beyond words, and certainly this is not something money or
fame can provide.

⼊⼤ 學 前 我 曾 經 很 擔 憂 ,⾯ 對 著 與
朋 友 的 離 別 、 陌 ⽣ 的 環 境 與 ⽣ 活 ,
我 的 確 很 擔 ⼼, 很 迷 茫 。 後 來 發 現
原 來 ⼤ 學 沒 我 想 像 的 恐 怖 , 反 ⽽ 是
更 多 姿 多 彩 的 , 我 如 願 以 償 的 考 進
我 渴 望 的 設 計 系 、 認 識 到 ⼀ 群 有 共
同 ⽬ 標 與 興 趣 的 朋 友 。 後 來 再 與
cky 的 同 學 敘 舊 時 , 才 發 現 我 ⽐ 所
有 ⼈ 都 要 順 利 、 幸 運 。 同 時 ,⼤ 學
的 確 有 各 種 各 樣 的 誘 惑 , 可 是 最 重
要 的 是 時 刻 提 醒 ⾃⼰, 勿 忘 初 ⼼,
要 銘 記 ⾃⼰ 當 初 的 ⽬ 標 與 夢 想 繼 續
奮 ⾾, 那 麼 所 有 的 挑 戰 都 不 會 是 挑

不 留 神 就 會 很 易 跟 不 上 課 程 ; 享 受

⼤ 學 ⽣ 涯 轉 眼 間 就 過 了 ⼀ 年 。 離 開
了 蔡 繼 有 的 溫 室 後 , 踏 上 了 屬 於 ⾃
⼰ 獨 特 的 路 程 , 當 中 有 不 捨 、 有 喜
悅 、 也 有 憂 傷 。
去 外 國 讀 書 擴 寬 了 我 的 眼 界 : 遇 ⾒
了 不 同 的 ⼈、 挑 戰 不 同 的 事 、 學 到
不 少 知 識 , 更 重 要 的 是 能 讓 ⾃⼰ 成
⾧。 在 崎 嶇 不 平 的 路 上 跌 倒 過 無 數
次 , 但 最 重 要 的 是 要 好 好 站 起 來 繼
續 ⾯ 對 。 我 想 ,⼤ 學 除 了 讀 書 以
外 , 是 真 正 地 認 識 ⾃⼰ 的 階 段 吧 。

我 是 讀 港 ⼤⽣ 理 醫 學 科 的 蔡 卓 南 。
我 現 在 住 宿 舍 ,⼀ 個 禮 拜 回 家 的 機
會 最 多 也 只 不 過 ⼀ 兩 天 , 所 以 很 多
時 候 都 不 能 依 靠 ⽗ 母 了 。 因 此 記 得
上 了 ⼤ 學 要 靠 ⾃⼰ 讀 好 書 , 吃 好 東
西 , 管 好 健 康 , 雖 然 ⼀ 開 始 可 能 會
⽐ 較 難 適 應 , 但 最 後 ⼀ 定 不 會 後
悔 。
