6 NEWS City Centre Transformation Have your say on Edinburgh’s transformation The people of Edinburgh are being urged to have their say on a radical programme to transform the city centre. The draft Edinburgh City Centre Transformation strategy highlights how the Council and its partners propose addressing the challenges facing the city. Edinburgh is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and is expected to have a population of 600,000 by 2040, which calls for careful management to protect and enhance the current quality of life. The strategy sets out how transformational change can prepare Edinburgh for the future while improving public spaces and prioritising movement on foot, by bike and by public transport. This is also designed to make the city centre safer, healthier and more accessible for everyone. Proposals detail the key infrastructure, policy and management interventions to transform the city centre in a phased approach over the next ten years. Included in the plans are pedestrian priority zones, a network of car-free streets, a free city centre hopper bus and new segregated and safe cycle routes. These proposals interlink with The City of Edinburgh Council’s broader plans to develop sustainability and connectivity across the city, which includes The Edinburgh Reporter plans for Low Emission Zones (LEZ) and the City Mobility Plan. There will also be two public events at the National Museum of Scotland on Friday 7 June and Saturday 15 June, from 10.00am to 5.00pm on both days. Fruitmarket Gallery - closing for renovation The Fruitmarket Gallery at 45 Market Street is already a large building, but it has now taken over the space next door and plans have been submitted to merge the two. The architects appointed are Edinburgh firm Reiach and Hall. Their plans aim to refresh the existing spaces and bringing the former fruit and vegetable warehouse next door (latterly the Electric Circus) into what is called ‘active cultural use’. The existing steel frame is the basis for an industrial look and feel which will create a double height space offering new opportunities for art installations and performance. Accessibility is key in the new development with a programme of general upgrading. There will also be some dedicated spaces for engagement as well as back of house, storage and workshop facilities. In July 2019 The Fruitmarket Gallery will close for refurbishment for a year. During the time it is closed staff from the gallery will work with artists in the community. In August people can go on a Night Walk for Edinburgh. This is a brand new video walk from Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller commissions by the Fruitmarket and presented in partnership with Edinburgh International Festival and in association with Edinburgh Art Festival. It delivers an inspirational new space for creative, collaborative working and renovates the Fruitmarket’s existing spaces, ensuring that we can continue to operate at the forefront of contemporary culture for decades to come’. Neil Gillespie, Director, Reiach and Hall Architects, said: ‘The new warehouse spaces are designed enter into a critical and dynamic dialogue with the original galleries. ONE TICKET ScotRail has teamed up with Borders Buses to bring integrated travel to the Borders Railway by offering a new all-in-one rail and bus ticket. The new Borders Explorer ticket allows customers to travel to the Borders from Edinburgh by train or bus on one ticket. The all-in-one ticket includes ScotRail travel to / from Edinburgh Waverley and any Borders Bus from Galashiels Transport Interchange to towns and villages throughout the region. Customers can only leave or board the train at either Galashiels or Tweedbank to board the connecting Borders Bus service. The Borders Explorer ticket is available for both peak and off-peak journeys, making it the perfect all-inclusive ticket for residents and visitors staying in Edinburgh and the Borders. VOLUNTEER FAIR Remember the Volunteer Fair is being held at Leith Community Centre 12a Newkirkgate on Friday 7 June 2019 from 1.00p to 3.00pm. BARNTON ROAD WORKS Road works began on 20 May 2019 in the Cramond and Davidson’s Mains area as part of major gas replacement works. The various phases started around Cramond Road North and the junction with Cramond Glebe Road with subsequent phases affecting Cramond Place and Gamekeepers Road, Cramond Road South and up to Davidson’s Mains covering junctions with Lauriston Farm Road and Main Street/Quality Street. The phases will run until early November. BIKE BREAKFAST EDFOC - Bike Breakfast on 11 June 2019 at City Chambers where you can get your bike chain cleaned and hear Councillor Lesley Macinnes the Transport and Environment Convener speaking with Andy Wightman MSP. Edinburgh Police will be there doing bike security marking and other stalls will give information on all things cycling related. Thousands of Bikers, supporters, military vehicles are all due to storm the streets and they will form up once again at Morrisons 30 New Swanston, EH10 7JA, Edinburgh NEW VISIT SCOTLAND OFFICE Cutting edge information and inspiration is available as VisitScotland opened a brand neiw iCentre for the capital city last month The national tourism organisation unveiled its new visitor information centre within the City Chambers on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Located in the heart of the historic Old Town, close to Edinburgh Castle, the national tourism organisation has invested £400,000 to provide a ‘welcoming and attractive’ experience, offering information through a wide variety of tools to ensure visitors experience the best of the city and Scotland as a whole. The new iCentre will replace the current site operating at the top of Waverley Mall Shopping Centre and will offer high quality face-to-face, printed and digital information to showcase the very best of the city, and the whole of Scotland, to visitors.
