Wow----June already! Hard to believe 2019 is half
over. The good news is only six more monthly
columns to write!
I would like to thank Charlie for putting together (on
short notice) another movie night for us in May. We
had fun watching Avengers Endgame at the Maya
Cinema on May 1 st . Charlie also snuck in another
movie night on May 29 th to see the Disney movie
Aladdin.
…a word from our President!
The Null’s and Henderson’s really put forth a lot of
good planning and hard work to provide club
members with another fun picnic at Kroekerville on
May 4 th . Thank you for making the 6 th annual picnic
a huge success! Additionally, we owe Joyce, Jill, and
Steve a big thank you for allowing us to again hold
the event at their facility!
Coming up this month are the President’s Mystery
Run, June 6 th through June 9 th , the Bass Lake Dinner
Run on June 22 nd , and a mystery lunch run on June
29 th .
Despite the record breaking May rainfall, summer is
almost here…………drive your Corvette. Get out
and participate in CVC activities (feel free to plan a
few also) and have some fun!
Be safe and save the wave.
General Meeting Minutes 5-21-19
The General meeting was called to order by Dick
Danielsen at 6:28 PM. Dick opened the meeting by
gleefully reading the Corvette Prayer.
Secretary – Kathy Marine read minutes from the
April General meeting. The April minutes were
amended as noted adding omitted donors of raffle
prizes. David Dukes made a motion to accept
amended minutes; Gary Pflepsen seconded the
motion.
Treasurer’s Report - Lynn Henenfent gave the
Treasurer’s report. She also stated $240.00 was
collect in raffle ticket sales. Freida Nulls is excellent at
selling raffle tickets. Go Freida!
VP of Public Relations/Membership – Ruthie
Danielsen announced birthdays and anniversaries.
As the saying goes… April showers bring May
flowers… what does May bring? Eleven birthdays.
Happy birthday to all eleven! May wasn’t as busy in
the Marriage Department as it was in the Birthing
Department. Only one lucky couple, Keith and
Debbie Garrison, were celebrating their anniversary
and are the winners of this month’s $25.00 Yosemite
gift card. Congratulations on 27 years of marriage!
Ruthie reminded members to take advantage in
sponsoring new members when the opportunity
arises. $50.00 is awarded to the sponsor of a new
member who joins CVC.
VP of Activities – Mike Lebda informed the
members of upcoming runs and activities. Each run
leader gave a brief synopsis of their run and
provided members with any updated information.
New runs are being planned. Sign-up sheets will
soon be available. So be sure to check Run/Activity
Schedule published in the newsletter for planned
runs or contact run leaders with any questions
regarding their run.
President Mystery Run – June 6-9 - Dick thanked
Chuck and Linda Laningham for helping with the
President Mystery Pre-Run and disposing of the
huge rattlesnake population. Due to the high
availability of rattlesnakes, they may be a menu
option -- tastes like chicken. Just kidding… I think. So
as not to get lost in the desert, CB radios are
required.
Cars in the Park Dinuba Car Show – June 8 -
Members were strongly encouraged to participate
to show support for Ed Dena and his sponsorship.
Ed Dena’s Happy Heart Fundraiser Car Show –
September 7 – Members are again strongly
encouraged to participate to show support for Ed
Dena and Valley Children’s Hospital, a charitable
cause.
As a follow-up to recent held runs, Mike asked each
run leader to reflect on the highlights for members’
enjoyment.
Glenn Henderson described the April 20 Mariposa
Museum and Lunch Run. 47 members
participated. The first stop after a beautiful scenic
drive to Mariposa was at 1850 Restaurant for a
delicious lunch. Across the road, Docents lead
several groups through the Mariposa Museum
explaining the various indoor exhibits, as well as
telling stories of Mariposa County from the Native
American and Spanish, California Gold Rush, and
early 1900s. We were on our own to explore the
outdoor exhibits of mining, blacksmithing, other
equipment and buildings. After, we were back in the
Corvettes, on are way to Reimer’s Ice Cream parlor.
What a way to end a fun run.
Charlie Fosnaugh stated 13 cars participated in the
April 27 Clovis Rodeo Parade designated as an
“American Pride” parade theme. The CVC club was
awarded a second-place ribbon again. Guests of
Tom and Emily Piercy, Mike and Judy Swan also
participated. Everyone enjoyed their lunch at Red
Robin.
Freida Nulls spoke about the May 4, Annual CVC
Picnic, Kroekerville. 50 members participated and
had a great time. They enjoyed good weather, good
food, played fun games – Left-Right-Center being a
big hit, and lots of prizes won.
Old Business: Dick queried the floor for any old
New Business: Dick queried the floor for any new
Why the Corvette Grand Sport Exists
Some have labeled the C7 Corvette Grand Sport as nothing more than a “fake” Z06.
On the surface, this assertion isn’t entirely misguided. After all, the C7 Corvette Grand
Sport is equipped with the same GM 6.2L V8 LT1 engine as the base-model Stingray,
producing the same output of 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. However,
the Grand Sport also comes with Z06-style body and aerodynamic components,
including wider hips and tons of extra vents. With Z06 looks, minus the 650
horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque created by the Z06’s supercharged LT4
engine, one can see where the “fake” Z06 accusations are coming from. Which leads
us to one question – why does the Corvette Grand Sport exist? To answer that, we’ve
gotta start by taking a trip down memory lane.
Back in 1962, Chevrolet launched the Grand Sport program, which sought to create
a lightweight C2 Corvette that could take the fight to the Shelby Cobra in GT-class
racing. Zora Arkus-Duntov was the driving force behind the creation of the Grand
Sport program. Lightness was key to the formula; in fact, a light car was so important,
that the program was originally known as “The Lightweight” inside of GM. The
namesake was justified too, as early prototypes managed to shave a full 1,000
pounds from production Stingray models thanks to lightweight
components like aluminum, magnesium, and ultra-thin fiberglass.
The resulting vehicle boasted very impressive specs, while being complemented by
a bevy of aero components, large intakes, and vents across its reshaped body.
Providing the motivation was a 6.2L V8 engine producing upwards of 485
horsepower. The plan was to create 125 examples for homologation purposes.
But as soon as GM execs caught wind of the project, it was quickly canceled. Luckily,
before it met the axe, five units of the C2 Corvette Grand Sport were produced. Today,
these vehicles are considered to be some of the most valuable Corvettes in
existence. Fast forward to modern times, and the spirit of the original Corvette Grand
Sport runs through the present-day car. It’s track-ready, it looks the part, and – more
importantly – it’s light. First and foremost, the upgraded aero and body components
certainly help it look the part, especially when equipped with the optional stripes and
fender markings that provide a direct throwback to those early 1960s racers. For
apex-hunting duties, the Corvette Grand Sport comes with Z06-style suspension
tuning, although the tune for the anti-roll bars, Magnetic Ride Control suspension and
springs are unique to the Corvette Grand Sport. The Magnetic Ride
Control suspension is also standard equipment, as is an electronic limited-slip
differential.
The Corvette Grand Sport sits on larger 19-inch wheels up front and 20-inch wheels
in the rear, all of which are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. It also
features upgraded, Z06-style cooling for track use.
Perhaps more importantly, the Corvette Grand Sport is lighter than the Z06, tipping
the scales at 3,252 pounds. Compared to the 3,350-pound Z06, that’s almost a 100-
pound difference.
At the end of the day, the Corvette Grand Sport is most certainly not a “fake” Z06 by
any means. Instead, the vehicle is its own type of (very unique) animal that bridges
the gap between the Stingray and the Z06 as a lean, mean track-ready performer that
is perfectly capable to deliver on the fun factor in a big way, even without the Z06’s
650 ponies under the hood.
