OPPrairie.com life & Arts the orland park prairie | June 6, 2019 | 23 Multi-library geocaching competition runs through Aug. 3 Submitted by Orland Park Public Library The Orland Park Public Library is hosting its inaugural ATLAS Multi- Library Geocaching Competition that was to launch Monday, June 3, and is to conclude Saturday, Aug. 3. Library patrons are invited to use clues and geographic coordinates to find hidden geocaches at OPPL and other participating area libraries. Clue cards can be picked up starting the first day of the competition. Geocache is a realworld, outdoor treasure hunt in which people of all ages can take part. All participants need is a GPS-enabled device, such as a cellphone, iPad or smartwatch with access to a mapping app, such as Google Maps. Individuals may also use a mapping website to enter the coordinates. Patrons navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and attempt Orland Park’s summer Children’s Theatre auditions set for June 17, 18 Submitted by Village of Orland Park The Village of Orland Park Theatre Troupe is holding auditions for its Summer Children’s Theatre production of “Cinderella,” directed by Dee Hamilton. Open auditions for those ages 7-18 are to be held from 1-3 p.m. June 17 and 18. Invitation-only callbacks are to be held on June 19. Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a song a capella and read from the script. Once cast, members must pay the $40 registration fee. Rehearsals and performances will be at the Village’s Cultural Center, 14760 Park Lane. Rehearsals are slated for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays. Not all characters are required at all rehearsals. Conflicts should be shared at the auditions. Performances are to be at 7 p.m. Aug. 9; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 10, and 2 p.m. Aug. 11. The Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for golfers and sponsors for its annual golf outing, scheduled for June 20 at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. More than 150 golfers are expected at the event. Cost for a day of golf (with cart, continental breakfast, lunch, beverages on the course and sit-down dinner with cocktail reception) is $125 per person or $500 per foursome. Spring on the prairie June 8 Submitted by Orland Grassland Volunteers On Saturday, June 8, the Orland Grassland Volunteers are to celebrate spring on the prairie by hosting a free prairie festival at Orland Grassland. The bird walk starts from the parking lot at 167th Street, just west of LaGrange Road. Other actives gather at the Outdoor Classroom in the oak savanna. The schedule is as follows. • 7-9 a.m. — Mike Mc- Namee and Marnie Baker lead a bird walk to see birds such as bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks and Henslow’s sparrows. Bird walk leaves from the parking lot. • 9-11:30 a.m. — From the parking lot, attendees can follow the artwork along the westward bike trail to the Outdoor Classroom in the oak savanna. There will be hospitality tables filled with food, field guides, maps, literature and a craft for children. Nestled within the oak savanna will be a photo/poster exhibit. • 9:00-11 a.m. — Dave Dolak, a professor at Columbia College, environmental scientist and cyclist — will lead a bike ride around the Grassland. Along the way, he will explain the geology of Orland Grassland. Attendees should meet up at the Outdoor Classroom. • 9:30-11 a.m. — Bill Fath and Gary Clinkman are to lead a guided nature hike into the interior. Attendees can see wildflowers, birds, butterflies, insects and much more. Great for photographers. People should bring binoculars. Scavenger hunt for children. This nature hike will be done on natural terrain, so it is recommended that people be steady walkers. The hike is best for children older than age 8. Attendees should dress for the weather in sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves. Meet up at the Outdoor Classroom. Submitted by Village of Orland Park Orland Park’s Got Talent open auditions will be held from 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, and Wednesday, July 17, at the Village’s Cultural Arts Center, 14760 Park Lane. Family-friendly acts of any kind will be considered. There is no cost to enter the contest. Top-scoring acts will be notified of their advancement to the finals that will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Taste of Orland Park. Judges will select 10 finalists to compete in the final contest at the Taste. The top winners of the final round at the Taste of Orland Park will win $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive $50.
