With Jack Dryfhout
Jack Dryfhout is an Orland Park resident.
He just finished his freshman season
at Chicago Christian, was a setter
on the inaugural boys varsity volleyball
team and also played soccer in the fall.
You were a freshman setter on a
first-year varsity program. How
did that go for you and the team?
Just coming in my first year and playing
good competition was great. I got to play
at a high level with guys like [senior outside
hitter] Zach Bulthuis. We had great
crowds that were motivating. We finished
with a winning record (18-11). It was
good. It was fun.
How did you get involved in
playing volleyball?
My two older sisters played it. Jordan,
who will be a sophomore at Augustana,
and Maddie, who will be a senior at Chicago
Christian this fall. So, my mom,
Becky, really wanted me to play it, so I
did. But this is really only my second year
playing it full-time.
Do you play any other sports?
Yes. I also play soccer in the fall. That
starts right when club volleyball ends.
I’ve been playing soccer a lot longer than
volleyball, though.
So which sport do you like better?
Volleyball. I like that there’s always action.
I’m always setting the ball or doing
something with it on defense.
Have you always been a setter?
Yes. Jordan was a setter and my mom
wanted me to follow in her footsteps. I
like setting and always being involved.
What have you learned from
veteran Chicago volleyball coach,
Deb Lindemulder?
She’s helped my defense a lot. She’s
helped me get my fundamentals down.

She’s helped me a lot with the core stuff
that you really need.
What do you do to pump yourself
up before a game?
If we’re on a bus ride I listen to a lot of
music. Mostly old rock songs like Queen
and Led Zeppelin. They are two of my
favorites. I listen to some modern tunes,
too. Mainly just something that gets me
in the zone.
If you could be one superhero, who
would you be and why?
The Flash, just to make my life easier,
just because I want to be places and do
things quickly. So, not so much that I want
to save the world; I just want to make my
life better.
What is your spirit animal?
A cat. Because they can be lazy as much
as they want. I’m not lazy on the court or
playing sports. But otherwise, I can be.
What’s the best thing about being
an athlete at Chicago Christian?
The people. It’s just great to play with
them. Plus, the coaches. We’ve got a lot
of great coaches and veteran ones like
coach Lindemulder, who was here in the
[1980s]. They know what they’re talking
about.
