IMPOSS
THE WORD ITSELF SAYS
“I’M POSSIBLE”
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
Wellbeing made easier ...
We live in a world where there’s an abundance of great advice, we can google
every possible problem and a multitude of solutions. So why aren’t we all
thriving?
It’s so common to be frustrated that we’re not acting on our own inner wisdom
and getting the results we want. It’s been my mission to create a tool that is
curated for each individual to help them take the steps towards their dream
mind, body and soul. Hence the creation of our app Be Intent, making it easier
to make a multitude of small steps towards vibrant wellbeing.
It’s been a long journey understanding human behaviour and putting the
research of many mind scientists (that’s what I call the positive psychologists,
neuroscientists and neuroplasticityists). There’s been a wealth of studies done
on the impact of a positive moment on brain functions, soooo …. we decided
to take all of that research and put it into action within our app, so everyone of
us and our communities can build resilience and thrive.
Personal
Be Intent is a simple tool to assist you in your
personal development and help build positive
wellbeing habits. It is hard to always be on top
of every aspect of your life so using our app
daily gives you friendly reminders on how to
prioritise energy and balance to combat those
times where everything can feel like it is
piling up.
Schools &
Youth
Young people today are constantly drawn
into the world of social media which we know
is impacting their mental wellbeing. Our
platform is a kind friend that supports young
people through the good and the rough times
in their lives. We act as the pastoral carer who
can offer a consistent duty of care 24/7. We
help nurture their personal development by
encouraging them to set goals and create life
strategies while building mental wellbeing and
resilience to prepare them for their adult lives.
BUILDING A SENSE OF
PURPOSE
AND COMMUNITY IS A SIGNIFICANT
WAY TO REDUCE SUICIDE
close to our hearts is the rising
statistic for Māori. There is a
huge amount of work being
done in this space in NZ with
many programs and exceptional
people working in the mental
health space, supported by
organisations like Te Puni Kōkiri.
We are living in a world where a sense of purpose, resilience and
community is feeling beyond many people. We interviewed 730 youth
and the key theme that they feel is that it is because of these issues
people have a feeling of isolation and hopelessness. Suicide as a choice
for young people both in New Zealand and globally is on the rise, so
Youth themselves are reaching
out and addressing the issues.
We have just started working
with Otamatea High School
where the students after one of
their own died by suicide banded
together to create a student
lead Health Council, focussed
on building mental health and
resilience in the rest of
the school.
6

One of the ways that we are working to impact
this issue is to have the app 24/7 there as
a kind wise friend that can be there to help
with small strategies, encouragement and
inspiration, as well as a toolbox to use when
feeling anxious or in turmoil. To connect you
with your local services that can help, when
your too distraught to look up numbers or
options to get help.
Youth are also creating content themselves
that gives them a feeling of being part of the
solution and a sense of purpose and sharing
with their communities.
The dashboard also detects patterns that we
may be able to use in the future to alert us to
someone in need.
As we work with more youth and communities
we can build a sense of being part of
something bigger than themselves, with a
hope that this helps them understand that the
world needs them!
It’s messed up. One
of the most beautiful
countries in the world
and we have one of
the highest suicide
rates in the world
per capital
Ōtamatea High School students
shine a light on mental health.
Students from the Maungaturoto
school are running a health council
to start conversations around
mental health
One of the challenges the health council faced
was how to communicate with all the students
and help them with strategies to make sure that
everyone is included and supported in times of
stress. They started with an Instagram account
which had limitations as the school prefers
students to not use phones at school.
Founder Suzanne Hall met with the school
and the council has decided to use Āta Hihiko
as their wellbeing tool. They are busy making
their own content and the whole project will
be student lead. What is great is that it works
on their Chrome books, so students can have
access throughout the day.
It looks like this could be a great model and
proactive way for schools to approach student
wellbeing.
WHAT’S
THE REAL
WELLBEING
OF YOUR ORGANISATION?
With the government focussing on
wellbeing, how does a company
really support staff wellbeing? Is gym
memberships, fruit bowls, and 10,000
step programmes enough?
When initially researching
engagement and wellbeing in
organisations, it became clear that
often the issue was not ‘what the
company was doing’, rather that
life, family, health, financial and
community issues weigh heavily on
people and the ability to juggle it all
changed on a daily basis. Resilience
skills varied considerably and as
8

stress increased, the ability to take the
multiple small steps to manage all of this
reduced, further compounding the issues.
Our data collected each day on over
11,000 people shows that 82% of people
on a daily basis are feeling negative or
tired. This radically impacts every aspect
of their lives, including of course their work
life. How does an organisation show their
duty-of-care and support wellbeing that is
relevant and measurable to all their staff?
That’s the problem that we have solved
using technology. We’re all about giving
staff a tool to help them get into the right
headspace at the beginning of the day.
The dashboard for both personal and
teams is a great way to encourage healthy
behaviours, goal setting and managing
their own wellbeing. Then programs like
EAP and support from team managers
become the gold, with the app doing all
the housekeeping and heavy lifting.
How do we get teams involved when they
already feel stressed and overwhelmed?
Our introduction of some gamification so
teams can compete for wellbeing points
has been embraced, this means that
wellbeing managers can run strategies
and easily provide incentives as well as
have a thorough understanding of what
strategies are working.
GAMIFYING TO GET
YOUTH INTERACTING
AND BUILDING THEIR
OWN WELLBEING
Human beings struggle with
consistency as we are frequently being
distracted by our devices and lured to
apps like Netflix, Facebook, Instagram.
This takes us away from reality where
we should be focused on our physical
health, practising resilience and building
positive relationships.
We’ve been experimenting …
Whether it’s using an app like ours, or
the many other strategies for wellbeing,
our mission is to encourage and entice
our users to build habits in the real
world. So it seems weird that we’re
using technology to do this. We realised
that if everyone is already on devices
then this is an obvious way to entice
them to breathe, go for a walk and
connect with friends.
up your wellbeing points and you get
to choose a strength for each piece of
clothing.
We’re running activities that build skills
around resilience, connection and
hope, that alongside their own avatar is
getting youth involved. We know this is
just a beginning and we’re going to have
to keep experimenting and building on
strategies to keep youth engaged and
really make a difference.
I’m amazed how numbers, scores,
and competition really work, even for
myself who I thought wasn’t interested
is scores. We’ve created a fairly basic
avatar that has both youth and adults
engaged in the app straight away.
To clothe your avatar you need to build
