Among the suspects, who
are currently being
investigated, is one
Anudumoapo Aiodun, who
allegedly raped his
neighbour’s eight year old
daughter on Saturday.
It was learned that at
about 5.00pm, Bariga
Police Station received a
complaint from a woman
(name withheld) that her
eight years old daughter
(name withheld) was raped
by their neighbour one
Anudumoapo Aiodun.
Sequel to the report, a
team of detectives from the
Family Support Unit
promptly arrested the
suspect, while the victim
was taken to the General
Hospital for medical
treatment and forensic
examination.
In a similar vein, the Anti
The suspects, identified
as: Rilwan Usman (25) of
Ekiti varsity shut as students
go on rampage
By Rotimi Ojomoyela
A DO-EKITI—THE
Management of
Ekiti State University has
announced closure of the
university and also the
postponement of the 1st
semester examination
which was originally
scheduled to begin today
(Monday).
In a statement by the
institution’s Registrar, Mr.
Akin Arogundade, the
new date for the
examination is Monday,
1st July 2019.
This wa after students of
the institution, yesterday,
held a peaceful protest
within the school
premises calling for an
postponement of their
examination scheduled to
start today (Monday).
The students, in their
large number, gathered at
the satellite gate of the
institution where they
chanted solidarity songs.
It was gathered that in a
bid to dissuade the students
from going ahead with the
protest, the school
management hurriedly
summoned the officials of
the student to an
emergency meeting, but it
appeared the efforts of the
management was ignored
by the students who had
already occupied the main
entrance to the campus.
The students had earlier
held a congress where it
resolved to call for
postponement of the
examination.
The students claimed that
they had just from holidays
and would need enough
time to properly prepare for
the examination.
According to them, some
students who were
supposed to sit for
examinations on Monday
still sat for test on Sunday
evening, saying such was
absurd in an academic
environment.
APAPA GRIDLOCK: Truck drivers flout
presidential order as chaos persists
By Olasunkanmi
LAGOS—BARELY 48
hours after President
Muhammadu Buhari
extended the order for
evacuation of trucks and
restoration of order in
Apapa ports and its
environs by two weeks,
truck operators have
continued to park
indiscriminately, thereby,
compounding traffic
situation in the area.
Following failure of the
Presidential Task Team to
tackle the protracted
gridlock within the earlier
two weeks ultimatum, the
Presidency, at the weekend,
renewed the directive for
another two weeks.
Vanguard findings
revealed that as at
yesterday, motorists and
residents continued to
grapple with the terrible
gridlock caused majorly by
truck drivers.
Although the Ijora-Apapa
port axis appeared to have
witnessed improved sanity,
operators of some of the
trucks and articulated
vehicles have now diverted
to Oshodi-Apapa
Expressway, thereby
increasing the influx of
vehicles in the axis.
Some of the worst hit
areas include Second
Rainbow to Fatgbems Gas
Station, Mile-2 to Otto
Wharf, Berger-Yard, down
to Trinity onward Coconut.
Traffic along most of the
areas was on the standstill,
an indication that the
situation might degenerate
during the week.
Along the Oshodi-Apapa
Expressway, truck drivers
practically took over the
entire five-lanes leaving
only just a lane for other
road users.
GTE, HREP, has advised
the Lagos State
Government not to
contemplate a monthly
environmental exercise that
will restriction the
movement of Nigerians, as
the Court of Appeal had
ruled that the state
government has no power
to restrict movement,
constitutionally guaranteed
under Section 41(1) of the
Constitution of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
HREP, in a statement by
its chairman, Mr. Ikenna
Okoli, and Mr Francis
Moneke, Executive
Director, yesterday, said:
“Our attention has been
drawn to the report making
the rounds in the media that
the newly inaugurated
administration of Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s
plans to reintroduce the
monthly environmental
sanitation exercise in Lagos
State.
“For the avoidance of
doubt, the abolition of the
monthly environmental
sanitation exercise
sometime in November
2016 by the immediate past
governor of the state,
Akinwunmi Ambode, was
not a mere policy
summersault, but was
informed by or premised on
the compelling order of the
Court of Appeal, Lagos
Division in its judgment in
the landmark case of
Okafor vs Lagos State
Government, which is now
fully reported in (2016)
LPELR-41066; [2017] 4
NWLR (Part 1556) 404.
“That case, which was
sponsored by HREP and
prosecuted from the High
Court of Lagos State up to
the Court of Appeal by
Ikenna Okoli, with a team
of other lawyers as counsel
for the appellant, has laid
to rest the issue of the
propriety of restricting the
movement of people for the
reason of environmental
sanitation.''
being overwhelmed by the
they were trying to divert
their movement from Mile-
Investigation’ll prevent air
crashes, says ex-AIB boss
L AGOS—FORMER
Head of Accident
Investigation Bureau, AIB,
Angus Ozoka has said
investigation was critical to
the overall safety in flight
operations, as the industry
depends on the
recommendations made by
the agency to prevent future
accidents.
Ozoka, who hosted the
International Civil Aviation
Organisation, ICAO, team
that audited the Nigerian
aviation industry as pioneer
Commissioner/CEO of the
Bureau in 2007, noted that
accident investigation was
a painstaking work, which
procedure and processes
were not exposed to media
propaganda.
Ozoka was reacting to the
publications in the media,
titled: Air Peace Concealed
Major Aircraft Incidents
from Us – AIB, which was a
press release by the
Accident Investigation
Bureau to the world,
notifying the public that the
airline did not report an
incident to the Bureau but
only reported to the
Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority, NCAA.
Ozoka, who noted that
such publication was
unprecedented, said: “After
carefully reading the article
and as a concerned
Nigerian, I have the
following observations and
comments on the matter.
"The damage assessment
by AIB did not reveal that
an accident or serious
incident occurred as hard
landing does not equate to
an accident or serious
incident.
“According to AIB, the
nature of the damage
suggests a high probability
of an accident but it is
difficult to see how such a
that a contractor, engaged
by the Presidential Task
team had, weekend, began
repair works on the bad
portions of the road at Trinity
area, in bound Mile-2
along
Oshodi
Expressway.
conclusion can be reached
when a thorough
investigation was not
carried out.
‘’Accident investigation is
a pain-staking research
work, which follows a
whole process involving the
gathering and analysis of
information, the drawing of
conclusions after
determination of cause(s),
and making safety
recommendations.’’
Ozoka, who was also
former Rector of the
Nigerian College of
Aviation Technology, NCAT,
Zaria, equally noted that
after the incident, the
operating aircraft (B737-300
with registration 5N-BUK)
was grounded, awaiting
hard landing inspection.
“The aircraft was not put
back into operation and it
is not operating at the
moment and so, it is difficult
to see what wrong Air
Peace has committed.
“If, according to the
airline, a Mandatory
Occurrence Report, MOR,
was filed with the
Nigerian Civil Aviation
Authority in writing on
May 17, 2019 after a
notification was made on
May 16, 2019 i.e. within
two days of the incidents;
the NCAA should confirm
whether this assertion is
true, and if so confirmed,
Air Peace has done no
wrong.”
On the reference made by
AIB in its statement over an
earlier incident involving
an airline's aircraft , he said:
“With regard to Air Peace
B737-300 with registration
5N-BUO, a malfunctioning
Cockpit Voice Recorder
(CVR) does not equate to
an accident or serious
incident and does not
‘make’ an accident."
