space telescope in large format
Dirk H. Lorenzen is an astrophysicist
and science journalist.
At KOSMOS, he has already
published many books on astronomy
topics.
On 24 April 1990, Hubble began its fantastic journey
through the universe. Since then, we are amazed by the
photos that the space telescope sends to earth. This
coffee-table book presents the best and most spectacular
among them. The photos show us the birth and death of a
star, advance into the heart of far-away galaxies and are on
the track of mysterious dark matter. Accompanying text
that is easy to understand realises the dramatic events in
outer space and describes the history of the most famous
telescope of our time. Hubble’s amazing photos in top
quality – a stirring trip to space.
Professor Dieter B. Herrmann is
director emeritus of the Zeiss large
planetarium in Berlin. He is
among the best-known astronomy
authors in Germany, regularly
gives lectures and is an expert
consultant for astronomy trips.
3 Journey to the origins of astronomy
3 Atlas in an exquisite design, with elegant
maps of historical sites
This atlas takes us along on a journey to astronomy’s places of
longing, the locations where humanity acquired its knowledge of
space. 69 exploratory trips around the globe with 14 travel reports
guide us to the beginning of astronomy research: from Tuscany to
Scandinavia, from the Nile to India’s shadow plays, from Nazca
geoglyphs to huge telescopes in America. The author visited all
these locations himself and tells their story as a story of humanity.
A celestial reading and learning pleasure and an exquisite gift.
3 With 48 celestial charts for any
time of year
3 Plus: encyclopaedia of constellations
The proven field guide offers everything you need to
turn beginners into expert sky watchers. In text that is
easy to understand it explains the orbits of the sun,
moon and planets, introduces stars and galaxies and
discusses how a telescope works. 48 maps show the
starry sky during each month and for each cardinal
direction. Starting from the Big Dipper, this allows you
to find additional constellations and special celestial
objects. A preview of celestial events for the next 10
years completes this practical guide to the sky.
3 Earth’s magnetic field – just as
important as air to breathe
3 Uniquely entertaining reader
about our earth’s protective shield
Earth's magnetic field surrounds us like a powerful,
invisible protective shield. It ensures that migrating
birds find their way, compass needles show the correct
direction and satellites send data undisturbed by space
weather. Without the magnetic field, life on earth would
not even be possible. Science journalist Anke Wilde
dives deep into the hidden world between sky and earth
and very casually explores the question ‘what keeps the
world together at its outer edges’.
3 The garden saviour: with sample beds for
extreme weather conditions
Weeks of drought or precipitation, frost too early or too late: the
garden is changing. What should you do if too much sun or rain
hurts your plantings? This modern handbook explains the type of
gardening work that makes sense during extreme weather, introduces
robust plants and, based on sample beds, shows how to
arrange them optimally. This book shows the ‘jack of all trades’
plants: plants and beds that are suitable for any extreme weather.
3 Nature Writing – Emotional and
3 Reading pleasure in a noble design
3 With illustrations by Paschalis Dougalis,
one of the best nature artists
in Europe
Forest bathing and preschool in the woods, death of forests and clear cutting –
hardly any natural environment moves people as intensely and emotionally as
the forest. In this NatureTime volume, Adriane Lochner considers the forest as a
place of yearning, both from a cultural-historical and a forestry perspective. She
introduces us to the history of the forest, shows different ways of using the
forest and explains cycles, ecosystems and threats. In easily readable, entertaining
language, she recounts how we impact the forest and how it affects us.
An informative field guide, fascinating reader and wonderful, valuable gift.
Adriane Lochner has a doctorate
in biology and has travelled the
world as a freelance journalist since
2013. On the road she writes about
scientific and conservation topics,
for National Geographic Online,
Heinz Krimmer studied journalism
and politics, among other subjects,
and has worked as a freelance
journalist, photographer and film
maker since 1984. After initial
success as an author, the seas and
diving increasingly became the
focus of his work.
3 Octopuses – dazzling beings with mysterious
intelligence
3 Spectacular photos – exceptional design
You don't have to look for aliens in space, they are already among
us: they live their mysterious and by far not completely researched
existence in the depths of the seas. Science journalist Heinz
Krimmer introduces the world of Cephalopoda – those with
tentacles attached to their heads – and takes us along to the habitat
of these bizarre beings with their three hearts and nine brains. He
describes behaviour and ecology in a fascinating and entertaining
manner, and unveils astonishing facts, for example, why researchers
into consciousness are interested in kraken. A wonderfully
designed volume with spectacular photos – as fascinating as an
encounter with a kraken.
3 Information to amaze you: hunting strategies
and incredible skills
Our domestic insects hunt in such sophisticated ways that they can
hardly be surpassed. The unparalleled photos in this volume offer
never-before-seen insight into the elaborate techniques of these
six-legged predators: how they lurk and rummage and ambush
their prey while swimming, flying or gliding. Fascinating text
explains behaviour and hunting strategies, and shows the world of
insects in an entirely new light.
Hubert Handmann's special concern
is to inspire young people's
interest in environmental topics.
Veronika Mischitz is a graduate
biologist, freelance illustrator and
comics artist.
She discovered her heart for birds
already during her studies, when
she spent much time with bird
enthusiast friends and colleagues
on a field station in Norway.
3 Wonderful introduction to a fascinating
hobby – with funny drawings
3 Complete instructions for observing and
identifying domestic birds
Birding is highly fashionable. No wonder, because barely any other
hobby offers such opportunities to intensively experience nature
without much effort. To allow you to start easily and have fun right
from the beginning, graduate biologist and illustrator Véro Mischitz
tackled the topic rather unconventionally: with a relaxed drawing
pencil, charm and wit. When and where can I observe birds and which
equipment is best? Which bird is this, how does it live, and does it sing?
How can I distinguish among groups of birds and identify them? These
and many other questions are answered amusingly and with much
knowledge in cool drawings. A tempting start into a fascinating hobby.
of wolves that share their habitat with humans.
Their in-depth and detailed account highlights the
topic from the most varied points of view, describes
problems and challenges, and develops possible
solutions. An excellent basic book for anyone who
wants to form an objective opinion on the topic wolf.
3 How breed, sex, appearance and
age affect behaviour
A dog owner wants to explore the world with his
puppy, but the little one refuses. Why? It’s not a
lack of trust, but the effect of the tie to a location
that occurs at that age. PD Dr. Udo Gansloßer and
Petra Krivy analyse reactions such as these against
their biological background: why does a dog behave
in this way, what do biological controls cause, and
where are the limits of what can be trained? Many
case studies show how you can bridge critical periods
and which training measures make sense.
3 Optimize dog training by knowing
behavioural biology
Bond, dominance, imprinting, hierarchy – what do
these terms really mean and on which behaviours are
they based? Zoologist PD Dr. Udo Gansloßer offers
insights into the fascinating world of behavioural
research. In easily understood text he explains
behavioural biology connections based on the latest
research in monkeys, elephants or guinea pigs, and
shows that much of this also applies to dogs. An
indispensable manual for dog trainers and a reference
3 Design varying dog walking trips
for any dog type
Hunting rabbits, molesting rivals or anxiously pulling
the leash: what dogs do during walks often brings little
joy to their humans. This book introduces a wealth of
ideas for activities that turn dog and human into a great
team during walks. A test for the dog type tells you
which suggestions match your own quadruped. Now
you can start: with exercises, games and strategies that
are appropriate to the type while you are out and about.
Any number of ideas suitable for daily use, ideal for
first-time dog owners.
3 Lead dogs motivated by hunting
appropriate to their needs
Every owner wants to allow his dog to run without a
leash, but for dogs with a great passion for hunting the
human quickly reaches his limits. This book provides
dog owners with a training system they can use to
successfully lead and control their dogs who love to
hunt. The dog learns by itself to offer desired behaviour,
confidently indicate game and let itself be guided by
calling it back and by other signals. This allows for relaxed
walks even in an environment that entices hunting.
3 The first parent handbook on guided
hypnosis for children
3 Preface by Prof. Siegfried Mrochen,
the “pope” of children’s hypnosis
Cheerful and strong children are Beate Blumrich’s most
important concern. With her new book, the experienced
hypnotist wants to help prevent possible damage to
the soul, e.g., by excessive demands, already during the
childhood years. She provides parents with reputable
instructions they can use to guide their own children
into hypnosis. By accompanying them to an inner
refuge or to inner helpers, they open for their child the
way to good, natural handling of feelings.
3 Quick aid for psychological stress
and urgent problems
3 By bestselling author Ruediger
Dahlke
Messages from the soul are a cry for help to change
something in life. Well-known doctor and psychotherapist
Ruediger Dahlke shows relaxation techniques,
healing exercises and meditations that provide practical
help for psychological complaints such as fear, burn-out
or grief. Sensitive exercises in perception convey trust
and zest for life, help you to learn new things about
yourself and open steps in the direction of healing. This
allows you to heal old injuries, let go of burdensome
events, recognize your own life themes and become a
free person.
of her extraordinary life
3 Keep your wild vitality – live well
in a digitised world
2019 is a year of anniversaries for Luisa Francia. In
September she will celebrate her 70th birthday, for
20 years she has written her Internet diary, and her
goddess house in Portugal has existed for 10 years. In
this book, Luisa Francia summarises the essence of
her unique life experiences. She knows which powers
we need to manage daily life well in the era of
digitalised ways of life. Her instructions and exercises
help you to remain healthy, lively and cheeky.
3 The stirring biography of a charismatic
spiritual teacher
3 Leap into another kind of awareness
‘Test all paths, and once you found me as the truth,
follow me’. At the age of 15, André Buchheim had his
first experience of God and received this order. The
event catapulted him from a childhood marked by
violence and coldness onto a life path of spirituality and
humanity. In his autobiography, he lets readers
participate in his development to spiritual teacher.
Easily traceable doctrines and specific exercises open
the way into a spiritual, non-denominational teaching
system and into better awareness.
second toe, can be corrected without painful surgery.
The experienced physiotherapist has developed an
also presents the taping method which corrects the
position of the bone with the help of elastic tape.
