Superintendent News by Dr. Joseph Beeson
”Let us not fool ourselves - without Christianity, without Christian education,
without the principles of Christ inculcated into young life, we are simply
rearing pagans.”
Peter Marshall
By Dr. Joseph Beeson,
Superintendent
Over forty years of service in Christian education confirms this quote in my
mind. Our school reminders about the importance of a Biblical worldview
too often fall on the ears of those who themselves have no Biblical worldview.
Why? Most were educated “without the principles of Christ inculcated into
[their] young life.” As a result, moral and ethical issues are often decided on what
feels good or what “won’t hurt” someone else.
The title of the publication you are reading is “The Light.” Our purpose is to give light to this world — to be a city
set on a hill. We can do that, but at times that does mean pushing against the darkness. We want our children to speak
the truth — but to SPEAK it. If the truth offends, may it offend so people repent and turn from darkness to light. If
truth offends, may it offend to protect those who are innocent. If truth offends, may it be so that our own lifestyles,
homes, and families become different from what people see in the world.
Cafenasium Dedication:
God’s Providence Has Made it Possible
by Sheryl Roberts, Director of Advancement
With God’s guidance and providence, Lake Center Christian School
announces the completion of the Cafenasium Capital Project. This
project has added a multi-purpose space to the present campus. The
facility includes an expanded kitchen, cafeteria, and additional gym
space that will also be used for chapels and school programs. Additional
restrooms and a locker room area are included. Many of you
have prayed and invested your time, talents, and treasure to make
this dream a reality. Thank-you!
Groundbreaking for the Cafenasium was on September 27, 2013.
Through the faithful investment of our partners, this nearly 3 million
dollar project will be in full use during the 2019-2020 school year.
The Board has declared the project complete and plans are being
made for an open house/dedication of the Cafenasium during “Backto-School
Night” on Friday, August 16, from 4:30-7:00 PM. A meal
will be available for purchase that evening. Please mark your calendars
for this exciting event and make plans to attend. At 7:00 PM, we
will have a Prayer of Dedication in the cafenasium.
Secondary News by Jeff Knori
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart!
I have overcome the world.”After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come.
Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give
eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom you have sent. John 16:33-17:3
Near the end of His farewell discourse and just before His High Priestly prayer Christ speaks to His Father and makes
a powerful statement, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, (God).”
Like the Kingdom of God which can be realized now and in the future, eternal life begins the day we come to know
Christ and by His grace we will continue to know and grow in that knowledge forevermore.
But knowing God must be more than mere mental assent; to
simply know someone or something on an intellectual basis.
The Bible teaches that we can know God in personal experience,
that we have the ability to know Him as well as we know
any other person or thing. To know God, really know Him and
grow in that knowledge, is the goal of the Christian life.
Our prayer for every student at Lake Center is that they would
know Him, grow in the knowledge of Him, and make Him
known. We covet your prayers for another year as we partner
with you and your Church to raise up the next generation for
Christ.
This semester course will provide high school students the opportunity to explore financial concepts and career applications.
Students will learn basic accounting skills and financial concepts such as investments, legacy planning, and business law as well
as biblical teaching related to leadership, stewardship, and service. Students should apply for this class through the Guidance
need to follow the guidelines to enroll in CCP.
What is the purpose of the Secondary Guidance Office?
The purpose of the secondary guidance office is to influence students’ academic, social, emotional and personal development in
the framework of the Bible. The School Counselor prepares classroom guidance lessons on careers, organization, stress management,
suicide prevention, drug and alcohol prevention, as well as purity unit during 7 th grade gender separation week.
The Secondary Guidance Office is a wealth of information. It is vital that parents read the Guidance section in the parent memo
weekly, so they do not miss important deadlines and information pertinent to their student. Feel free to contact us with questions
in the following areas:
TRAIN UP A CHILD
“Train up a child in the way that they should go; even
when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
We continue to live in a society that is ever changing.
Much is thrown at our children today that many of us did
not have to think through until well into adulthood. Our
children live in a cultural moment that demands readiness
and preparation. Biblical values are no longer the
norm, nor are they readily accepted as such.
Our children are, and will continue to be, engaged in a
battle — a battle that we need to prepare them to lead
with confidence, strength, discernment, and most of all
truth. This is why a Christian education is so important.
In order to stand strong and lead with authority, they need
the tools and training necessary to impact culture.
A Christian education provides support to the family and
the church. It gives children the advantage of consistency.
It grants them the ability to see their learning, on all
fronts, presented through the lens of Christ. A Christian
education is a critical component of developing leaders
ready to make a difference in the world.
I am reminded of the story of David and Goliath. Goliath
appeared to be insurmountable. The armies of Israel were
afraid to confront Goliath even as he mocked God. This
is where David comes in. David came in the name of the
Lord Almighty. He stood his ground, armed with truth,
and brought down the giant.
I am grateful to be at a school where children are taught
truth. Grateful to be in a setting where children are prepared
to do battle. Grateful for families that partner with
us in doing so. Together we are raising up a generation
that is able to influence their world and make a difference.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MINERAL AND CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS, AND
WHICH SHOULD I CHOOSE?
“Mineral sunscreens (Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) reflect UV light off the skin’s surface,
whereas chemical ones (such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, and avobenzone) change
UV light into heat energy (which is less damaging) on the skin’s surface,” explains
Melanie Palm, M.D., a dermatologist in San Diego. Traditional mineral sunscreens, per
their name, are made up of ground minerals, which can be gentler on skin but also may
leave visible residue. “Chemical sunscreens can have less of a film and tend to spend
more easily,” she says.
Each year, the academic top ten seniors nominate an educator/
one had made a difference in their life of learning and offered
huge encouragement along the way.
This celebration of our Top Ten and their guest, along
with parents and administrators, took place at The Hartville
Kitchen on Thursday, May 2, 2019. Each student introduced
their top educator and told why this person had
impacted their life. In turn, the educator spoke about the
student who had nominated them. Some stories made us
laugh and others brought a tear but the relationship between
each student and their top educator was clearly evident.
HELP! HOW DO I PLAN A COLLEGE VISIT?
by Kathy Pohly
The Secondary Guidance Office is happy to help students begin
thinking about their next step after high school; whether
it be college, trade school, missions, or working. If college is
the plan, getting started on thinking about college and how to
prepare is daunting. During the junior year of high school is the
best time to make college visits. It is ideal if college visits can
be completed by late fall of the senior year so that final applications
can be made to colleges of interest in order to receive
the opportunity for scholarship dollars. Scholarship decisions
are often made and dollars distributed in February/March of
that same school year with scholarship interviews taking place
in December and January. Lake Center allows for 3 excused
absence days to visit colleges so planning visits around school
days off is often helpful for schools that are a distance away to
visit.
In order to have a thorough visit, plan enough time at the college
to accomplish the following:
1. Plan to visit if possible when classes are in session instead
of during summer or holiday breaks.
2. Take a campus tour.
3. Meet with Admissions and the Financial Aid Departments.
4. Sit in on a class in your intended major (i.e., if you are a
music major, go to band or choir rehearsal).
5. If you are an athlete, meet with the coach of the sport you
intend to play while there.
6. Attend a chapel service (if going to a Christian college
where weekday chapels are scheduled.)
7. Always eat in the cafeteria.
8. Stay overnight in a dorm. The college will happily arrange
this for you.
9. Many colleges have organized visit weekends that you
may prefer to participate in. Check their websites for these
campus visit events.
This can all be scheduled by calling colleges of interest and
speaking with someone in the Admissions Office. Tell them everything
you would like to include in your visit and they should
be able to arrange it for you.
MARINE BIOLOGY CLASS
The Marine Biology Mini-term leaves for Key West on
Monday, June 17, 2019. This year we have 17 students
attending this Mini-term led by Mr. Sean Miller, Science
teacher. The students will spend a week learning about
Marine Biology in the Florida Keys.
Every fall, Lake Center hosts several college representatives
from local and distant colleges during lunch. Take the opportunity
to talk with visiting representatives, especially if you don’t
know where you may attend. Never worry that you don’t know
what questions to ask. They know how to talk with you to get
those thoughts and questions about college rolling! There are
also area college fairs being held each fall. We make sure to list
those in the weekly Parent Memo so you can plan to attend and
speak with numerous college representatives in one evening.
legacy will be? Charitable giving
is a ministry that the Lord has given
many. Lake Center Christian School
is thankful for the generous people
who prayerfully invest in the lives of
the next generation. Only eternity
will tell the returns on these investments.
Legacy Planning can allow you to provide for your loved
ones, give your peace of mind about your estate, and help
you minimize tax liabilities through charitable giving.
Lake Center offers opportunities to give to Endowment
Funds that keep on giving, create a Charitable Gift Annuity
or Charitable Remainder Trust that can provide
you with monthly income and tax deductions, or make
a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your Required
Minimum Distribution (RMD).
If you would like to know more about opportunities to
invest in the future of young people who attend Lake
Center Christian School through Legacy Planning please
contact Brian Coy at bcoy@lccs.com or call him at 330-
877-2049.
Legacy Giving Steps
1. Make an inventory of your assets.
2. Prayerfully decide how, when and where you would
like to give.
3. Contact an estate planner, accountant or financial adviser.
4. Consider Lake Center Christian School in your planning.
TUITION ASSISTANCE
Would you be willing to help a
LCCS Family by helping to support
them financially? We have a program
where we provide financial assistance
to families that may not be
able to keep their students attending
LCCS without some financial help. They have to complete
an application, and then the Tuition Assistance Committee
determines what they will receive. Some of our families
wouldn’t be able to attend without this help! Would you
help? Tuition Assistance is a great way to show you care
about LCCS families and our mission.
FROM THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE:
We are so excited with the number of new students God
has led to attend LCCS for the 2019/2020 academic
year! As of June 10, 2019, we have accepted and enrolled
100 new students (50 new families). We have
increased our Kindergarten and Sixth Grades to include
three classrooms.
Enrolling a student at Lake Center Christian School
(LCCS) is a process and the enrollment of a student is
not assumed. LCCS wants to make sure that each student
enrolled is mission appropriate and that the school
has programing in place to meet academic, social, and
spiritual needs. The admissions process takes into consideration
the family’s commitment to Christian education
and their church, as well as student academic readiness
for full inclusion class placement. Discerning if the
school can meet a student’s needs is important to their
success.
NOTE: Most students applying for admissions to LCCS do so because
of a recommendation from a current or alumni LCCS family.
We encourage you to share your family’s experience while
attending LCCS with families who are looking for a school where
students are equipped with a Biblical worldview that teaches them
to say yes to God, and empowers them to influence their world for
His Kingdom.
Lake Center Christian School has had a long tradition of welcoming international students and teachers to our
campus to enrich our culture and impact their lives. The International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP) is
a yearlong volunteer work and cultural exchange opportunity for young, Christian adults. Every year 60 IVEP
participants come from more than 25 countries around the world to volunteer in the U.S. or Canada, where they
live with a local person or family. Since its beginning in 1950, IVEP has emphasized peacemaking and building
understanding across cultures.
Lake Center is always looking for Host Families. Again for 2019-2020 the school will have one IVEP teacher.
Whether you attended Lake Center Christian School K-8 or K-12, we would like to hear from
you. How has the Lord directed your life since you left LCCS? How have you further prepared
to serve Him? What major life events have happened like marriage, children, career paths? We
Calista Hudak, Alumnus from the Class of 2017
Calista, daughter of Tyler and Denise Hudak, lives in North Canton and
graduated in 2017. She is attending Mount Vernon Nazarene University
and is earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She attended Lake
Center Christian School for all of 13 years of her elementary and secondary
education. She is currently working at GentleBrook. Her sister Nadya
is a Junior at Lake Center Christian School in 2019-2020. Mrs. Hudak is
very involved in LCCS in PTF and she is the President of the Fine Arts
Booster Club.
Here are some words of advice from Calista.
What is the best lesson you learned at Lake Center Christian School?
High school is just four years of your life. There is so much more to life
than peer pressure, being popular, and the kids who are mean. Things get
better once you realize that.
How did Lake Center Christian prepare you for what you are doing now?
Apologetics and the Biblical Worldview classes gave me some insight into the “real world.”
Please complete the Alumni
Google Form so that we can
connect with you! We want
to know what is occurring in
your life! Please let us know if
you have gotten married, or received
a blessing of a little one!
bit.ly/LCCSAlumni
What class best prepared you for life after Lake Center Christian School?
Apologetics
What were your favorite memories of Lake Center?
Any Band concert I performed in. (Calista is very musically talented and has learned to play
numerous instruments.)
What is one of your favorite Scripture verses?
James 4:7-10 The Message; “So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and
watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in
sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun
and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master;
it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”
What would you say to someone thinking about Christian Education, or Attending
Lake Center Christian in the future?
Christian Education can help with backing your religious beliefs, or challenge them completely,
both of which are good. LCCS gives you those challenges
- just remember that no school is perfect and that LCCS is extremely competitive
when it comes to grades. You’ll find a few close friends, and that’s great.
Alumni Night Basketball Game is planned for either Friday,
December 20, 2019 or January 10, 2020. Mark your calendars
now! Come and watch the game, have some food, and reconnect
Spring Season Wrap Up
Athletics by Shane Byler
THE 2019 LCCS SPRING SPORTS SEASONS WERE FILLED WITH EXCITEMENT AND MANY
NEW EXPERIENCES FOR OUR TEAMS.
The softball program, led by firstyear
head coach, Howard Leonard,
enjoyed a very positive experience
in 2019. After a strong 2018
campaign that saw the Softball Team
finish with a 13-11 record and their
first-ever OHSAA District Championship
appearance, Coach Leonard knew
that there would be work to do since the
2019 roster was almost entirely different
from the previous year. The young team
with only one returning upperclassman,
Kennedy Haubert, got to work and
proved to be very competitive throughout
the season and got better with each
game. The season was highlighted with
wins over Kenmore-Garfield (twice),
Cornerstone Christian, Akron North and
Canton Central Catholic, among others,
and a very big OHSAA Sectional Semifinal
win over Open Door Christian.
Macy Kline and Faith West were both
named PTC Honorable Mention recipients,
while Nicole Miller earned PTC
2 nd Team Honors, and Kennedy Haubert
and Kaydri Sommers were both named
on the PTC 1 st Team. The future seems
bright for the LCCS Softball Team and
they’ll continue to take steps forward
each year.
The baseball program, led by head
coach, Shane Byler (7 th year),
enjoyed a very positive season.
The Tigers finished 16-11 (4 th most
wins in a season) despite a very difficult
non-conference schedule that included
games against Canton Central Catholic,
Lake, GlenOak, and Jackson. The difficult
schedule prepare the Tigers for the
Tournament as they went on to knock off
Open Door Christian, Cuyahoga Heights
(2-seed & ranked #8 on the OHSBCA
State Poll) and Dalton (3-seed) in order
to reach the Program’s 4 th District Championship
Game. Unfortunately, Hillsdale
(1-seed & ranked #4 on the OHSBCA
State Poll) proved to be too much for Tigers.
Despite the disappointing District
Runner-up finish, the Tigers were proud
of the season they put together overall
and believe the foundation for future
success was established even more
throughout the 2019 campaign. The team
saw six players earn PTC honors including:
Kobe Byler and Daniel Underation
(Honorable Mention), Jackson Tucker
and Ben Price (2 nd Team), and Will Caudle
and Matt Starcher (1 st Team).
2019 District Baseball Champions
The track and field program, led
by second-year head coach, Brian
Stock, experienced some great
successes throughout the 2019 season.
There was a tremendous increase
in participation this year so that one
of the biggest groups we’ve ever had
participate in track and field at LCCS.
Though the team was still much smaller
than most of the schools they competed
against, they experienced a lot of individual
success and remained competitive
as a team. New LCCS records were
set by the following: Medgine Wojton
(12.94, 100M Dash), Jackson Tucker,
Joel Meyer, Aidan Green and Silas
Kadlecek (9:08.00, 4x800M Relay). Eliz
Slabaugh, Medgine Wojton, Jonathan
King and Silas Kadlecek all earned PTC
Honorable Mention Honors. Joel Meyer
claimed 2 nd Team Honors for the boys.
We are excited to see the track and field
program continue to take steps forward
under the guidance of Coach Stock and
his staff.
FALL SPORTS
2019-2020
On Monday, May 13 th , the LCCS Athletic Department
held its annual College Athletic Commitment
Day and saw six senior student-athletes
sign their national letters of intent to continue their academic
and athletic careers at the collegiate level. We’re
excited to see basketball players, Kennedy Haubert (Tiffin
University), Ellie Mizener (Kent State-Tuscarwaras)
and Payton Triplett (Malone University), soccer player,
Christian Zavarelli (Malone University), volleyball
player, Olivia Moore (Geneva College) and cross country
and track and field athlete, Eliz Slabaugh (Grove
City College) all continue their academic and athletic
careers at the next level. On behalf of the LCCS Athletic
Department, we’d like to express our gratitude to
our coaches, athletes, parents, and supporters for their
commitment to LCCS Athletics, and also send our best
wishes to our 2019 spring sport seniors as they move on
from LCCS.
SUMMER TIGERS
We have two Summer Tigers Baseball Youth Teams
(Blue & Gold) that are playing this summer. The Blue
team is 6 th grade students and the Gold team is 7 th grade
students. They are playing teams such as Coventry,
Malvern, Minerva, Perry, Manchester, West Salem,
Wadsworth, Massillon, GlenOak, Barberton, Northwest,
Mogadore, First Friends, and Streetsboro.
We enter into the fall sports seasons with a lot of
excitement surrounding our entire athletic program.
The fall is our busiest time of the year but
also one of the most exciting as well. With six different varsity
teams competing: boys soccer, girls soccer, boys golf, girls
golf, cross country, and volleyball, there are very few days
that an athletic contest is not taking place, sometimes even
multiple events happening at a time!
A sport that we are adding is a Varsity Bowling team! We
are going to be playing against our regular PAC teams at the
Turkeyfoot Lanes. We are putting the coaching staff together
now and will start looking for team members once school
begins for the Winter Sports season.
We are also excited about the strong coaching staff that is in
place for the year ahead. Bryan Smith (Boys Soccer), Jim
Kadlecek (Girls Soccer), Doug Byler (Boys Golf) and Julie
Watson (Cross Country) will all return as varsity head coaches
in 2019. Newly hired, Hannah Miller, will take over at the
helm of the Girls Volleyball Program. Coach Miller has most
recently served as the JV Volleyball Head Coach at LCCS,
but her coaching experience also includes stints as the JV
and Varsity Head Coach at Central Christian School, along
with multiple J.O. Volleyball seasons and work as a private
instructor. Coach Miller graduated from Central Christian
School where she played volleyball and then continued her
academic and volleyball career at both Ashland University
and Malone University. She currently resides in the area
with her husband, Sean Miller (LCCS High School Science
Teacher / JV Girls Basketball Coach), and her son Elijah.
We are currently continuing
our search for
a new Varsity Girls
Golf Head Coach.
Please contact the
Athletic Office for
any questions related
to LCCS Athletics.
Please consider following the LCCS Athletic Department
THE LIGHT SUMMER 2019
Mentoring Program and Career Fair by Sarah Keene
At Lake Center Christian School, we have two Mentoring Programs available for Elementary Students.
V.A.L.U.E. Reading Program
In this literacy awareness program, 1 st - and 2 nd -grade LCCS students are matched with a volunteer
(either an adult from the Lake Center Community or an LCCS High School student).
Students meet weekly with their “reading buddy” to read a book of the student’s choice, followed
by a fun activity. VALUE is not a tutoring program, in which specific skills are taught,
but instead is designed as a fun, interactive approach to encouraging students to read more
frequently and to develop a passion for reading.
Tigers & Cubs
“Cubs” (LCCS students in grades 3 & 4) are matched with “Tigers” (LCCS students in grades 9-12) for a year-long
mentoring relationship. Tigers and Cubs meet weekly during lunch for the purpose of developing a friendship and
providing a Christian role model for the Elementary student. While eating together, Tigers & Cubs may play a conversation
game, do an activity, or participate in a Bible Study together.
The Mentoring Program has been created for the purpose of providing Elementary students with a mentor who can
provide support, encouragement, and a Christian role model. The mentors (all LCCS High School students) must
complete an application and interview (including references) and be accepted into the program by the LCCS School
Counselors. The mentoring programs are free and available to all students. 1 st & 2 nd grade students can participate in
VALUE Reading by parent request, and all 3 rd - and 4 th -grade students are able to participate in Tigers & Cubs.
Adults or High School students who are interested in volunteering as mentors should contact Mrs. Bailey for an
application at mbailey@lccs.com. Parents of Elementary students can contact Mrs. Keene with any questions at
skeene@lccs.com.
Value Reading Program
VALUE READING PROGRAM
2019 celebrates the 8 th year for Value Reading Program at Lake Center
Christian School (LCCS). Initiated as a supplemental educational program
for elementary students, Value Reading was birthed from a desire
to instill firstly, a lifelong passion for reading and secondarily to increase
the student’s reading comprehension. In 2011, Sheryl Roberts, then Elementary
Principal, established this extracurricular opportunity to benefit
elementary students. Adults from the local community and Lake Center
Christian School high school students serve as readers and tutors sharing
not only their passion for books but friendship as well. Once a week during
the school year, students enjoy their favorite books along with games, and
activities which reinforce reading concepts and comprehension. According
to Kelsey Foote, Elementary Intervention Specialist at Lake Center Christian
School, this year there are more than 60 students enrolled the program
and over 30 community readers involved in 1 st and 2 nd grade alone. She is
quick to state that the vision of the Value Reading Program is instilling the
love for reading from one generation to another.
One of the many readers involved in the Value Reading Program is Karl Kiener. Mr. Kiener is a retired salesman
from the community, who has been a reader since 2013. He was first introduced to the program through his
church’s Sunday School teacher who asked for volunteers. Helping young students to read, and being with the
children each week keeps him young at heart. Kiener chuckled when he said there is no lack of conversation with
the young children. Opening each session in prayer, Kiener listens to his students. They are eager to share their
thoughts while Kiener is eager to share his love for reading. Not only does he engage the students in the basics of
reading, he offers help with their pronunciation, diction, and comprehension. During his sessions he notices the
little things such as hygiene, mood, or health and offers encouragement and grandfatherly wisdom. Kiener believes,
“The more children read, the more they learn, and the more prepared for life they will be.”
Mr. Kiener recalled a favorite story about a young reader who was sent to the principal’s office for disrespecting
his teacher. Instead of meeting the student at the classroom, Kiener went to the office to see if he was needed. There
he met his reader (who was glad to see him). As he spoke to the student, he gently approached the topic of the
disciplinary action and listened to the young boy’s story. Kiener reflected, “This opportunity allowed me to help
him with a skill. I was able to advise him about showing respect to his teachers and parents.” He was able to teach
this young reader how to manage his temper. How to act responsibly in his situation. How to communicate to those
around him when he is frustrated. Later that day, the young boy rushed down the hallway to meet Mr. Kiener and
the student handed him a handmade card. The unguarded affirmation from his reader demonstrated the influence
Value Readers of different generations have with their students. Older mentors of previous generations are invaluable
to the students. Their passion for reading, their diverse experiences in life enrich each life.
The Value Reading Program, according to Karl Kiener, is not only about sharing his passion of reading to the young
students but also about sharing wisdom, life skills, prayer, and conversation. For Kiener, it’s a two-way street - one
generation sharing wisdom and knowledge, another sharing hope, life, and communication. For more information
