Gill’s 'Vibrance in a Pastel World' was taken in last year's butterfly house at the Natural History Museum. “It was the beautiful soft colours & light in the background that initially caught my eye and I was fortunate that this butterfly had chosen to roost in a convenient spot to make use of it. The graceful curves of the plants added to the idea of a peaceful & tranquil world inhabited by the colourful butterfly. Holding the camera parallel to the butterfly I used a wide aperture to throw the background out of focus.” We are on summer recess from June to September but will continue informal meetings at a local public house (contact Lynda for details). We meet Tuesday evenings (Sep to May) at 8pm in Cameron Hall, Canons Hill, Old Coulsdon. Visitors £5 (refunded on joining). Visit oldcoulsdoncameraclub.org.uk, see us on facebook or contact lynda@oldcoulsdoncameraclub.org.uk Bird’s Eye View - July By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group We humans may not yet have had our summer holidays in July, but for some birds summer is already over and they are already starting their journeys back to winter quarters! Not many waders turn up in Croydon, but July sees the first Common Sandpipers heading back south and a few Lapwings may pass through. In recent years we have been lucky enough to have been blessed by the presence of Whimbrel and Black-tailed Godwit. And we are long overdue for a Little Stint or Wood sandpiper to turn up. The best place to find them could be South Norwood Country Park. It is also the time when Black-headed Gulls, having fledged their young, are leaving their breeding grounds around the Baltic Sea. One bird regularly arrives back from Copenhagen to spend the winter at Waddon Ponds and birds can be seen at other water bodies in Croydon. Hopefully pairs of Swifts will have raised their one brood of young in Croydon by late July family parties will be flying round feeding up ready to set off on their long journey back to central Africa by the month’s end. This year the RSPB Croydon Local Group has been asking people to send us details of any sightings of Swifts so that we can map where they can be found. We have also been asking people to consider erecting Swift nest boxes on their homes to encourage breeding. If you have seen Swifts in Croydon this year please let us know.
