The Weekly Times - TWT - 26th June 2019

The Weekly Times - TWT - cheekily describes itself as a campaigning, crusading, truth-seeking, death defying, Aussie battler-aligned, one-eyed-Tiger-led news organisation dedicated to Sydney's north west. It's one of the few remaining independently run community newspapers and turns 100 years old in 2021 - so if you want to show your support for independent media, have a quick look at the paper, submit a letter to the editor via its website or like or share one of its posts on social media. The flip book - or digital edition/replica - of the 19th June edition of TWT can be reached here: https://weeklytimes.com.au/the-weekly-times-twt-26th-june-2019/ And the most current edition of TWT is always reachable using this short address: bit.ly/OurTWT

Tigers’ quick Hugh set
to pounce in Caribbean
PACE sensation Hugh Sherriff (pictured) heads a talented
batch of Sydney Tigers’ cricketers bound for the exotic island
of Barbados next month.
The 17 year old
Tigers’ first grade
spearhead is part of
the Mortlake-based
360 Cricket Academy
team that is padding
up for the annual Sir
Garfield Sobers International
Schools
U/19 Cricket Tournament
to be staged on
the Caribbean island
from July 7-22.
By CHRIS KARAS
Young gun Hugh -
the inaugural recipient
of the SCG Cricket
Sir Ron Brierley
Scholarship - is one
of the brightest prospects
in the NSW
Premier Cricket first
grade competition.
A former Australian
U/16s, NSW U/17s
and Cricket Australia
X1 Under 17 representative,
pace ace
Sherriff will lead an
exciting 360 Academy
side to be managed
and coached by
Sydney Tigers stalwart
Dan Smith.
Promising cubs like
Green Shield keeper
batsman Lachlan
Shaw, all rounder
Harrison Townsend
who helped NSW
Country/ACT clinch
the National U/17s
title and emerging
14 year old batsman
James Moore also
feature in the strong
Academy side that
is aiming to go one
better after finishing
runners up to
Combermere School
Bridgetown in last
year’s Barbados
tournament.
The Sir Ron Brierley
Scholarship will
assist Hugh with his
off-season academy
trip to the West Indies
where he’ll test
his skills against
some of the best
Barbadian cricketers
and learn to play in
different conditions.
Coach Smith said
it was a great opportunity
for Hugh
and team mates to
develop their cricket
and return as finer
players.
Named after the
great West Indies
all rounder and national
hero Sir Garry
Sobers, this annual
tournament attracts
school teams under
19 years of age to
compete with their
local, regional and
international counterparts
in St Michael.
The tournament is
based on 40-over
matches.
Since 1986 the Sir
Garfield Sobers International
Schools
Cricket Tournament
has given schoolboys
the rare opportunity
of playing
on an international
stage.
To date this tournament
has produced
the likes of former
West Indies captain
Brian Lara, Darren
Ganga, Roland
Holder and several
English and South
African test match
players.
For the best two
teams there is also
the opportunity of
playing the final at
the historic Kensington
Oval test venue
- the oldest ground
in the Caribbean -
and meeting some of
the greatest cricketers
that ever lived
in the incomparable
Sobers, Sir Everton
Weekes, Sir Wesley
Hall, Sir Charles Griffith,
Seymour Nurse,
Joel Garner and Desmond
Haynes.
After the final, a festival
game is played
between the Caribbean
teams and a
combined side from
the United Kingdom.
Hawks’ league teams well placed for
finals charge in Combined Sydney series
RYDE EASTWOOD Under 20 rugby league team remain on track for the NSWRL Combined Sydney
Gold finals series after toppling Hills District 26-6 last Sunday at McCreadie Park Guildford.
The Hawks are entrenched
in third spot
on 21 points behind
competition pacesetters
Asquith Magpies
(24 points) and second
placed East Hills Bulldogs
(22 points) with
plenty of room for improvement.
(bold)
Versatile half back
Shannon Condon produced
another skilful
performance for the talented
Ryde Eastwood
side, showing his class
and creativity with the
ball and tenacity in defence
to earn the Player
of the Match award.
Condon was supported
by hard working
prop Callum Ellis, hooker
Blake Layton, elusive
winger Sione Tupou and
promising 18 year old
back rower Bray Guyan.
MEANWHILE the
Hawks’ all conquering
Under 18s team remains
undefeated in the
Combined Sydney Gold
competition after their
fixture against Clovelly
Crocodiles at Waverley
Oval was washed out
last weekend.
It has been a frustrating
month for the Ryde
Eastwood cubs who
have endured two washouts,
a bye and forfeit in
recent weeks.
They have won all six
matches played to date
but are keen to get back
on the field to push their
claims for the minor premiership.
Ryde Eastwood lead
the Combined Sydney
Under 18 Gold competition
on 18 points - four
points clear of second
placed St Johns Eagles
(14 points) and third
placed Newtown Jnr
Jets (14 points), Berala
Bears (13) and Clovelly
Crocodiles (9).
The Hawks’ Open Age
Womens team shares a
slice of the competition
lead in the 2019 Combined
Sydney Eastern
Open Age Womens series.
Despite a washout last
weekend, the female
Hawks are well positioned
for a title charge
on 22 points after eight
matches along with
South Sydney clubs
Redfern All Blacks (22)
and Mascot Juniors (22).
In the Sydney Shield
competition, second
placed St Marys edged
out Ryde Eastwood 30-
26 in a gripping encounter
at St Marys Leagues
Stadium last Saturday.
The Saints led 24-10
at the interval before
the Hawks rallied with
16 unanswered points
through tries by half
back Tristan Evans-Tsoi,
fullback Josh Rizk and
centre Reggie Alofipo
and two Josh Condon
conversions to grab a
26-24 lead.
Prop Dylan Fuad
crashed over for a late
try to seal a St Marys
triumph with half Dylan
White adding the extras.
Ryde Eastwood sit in
fifth spot on 18 points
behind competition
pace setters Cabramatta
(28), St Marys (23),
East Campbelltown Eagles
(22) and Guildford
Owls (22).
