Make good use of these stormy summer afternoons
Megan Bernard
megan@glencoeanchor.com
With all those unexpected
stormy
afternoons
we’ve been experiencing
so far this summer, why
not make one productive?
New Trier Township
is gearing up to begin its
fourth annual summer
Children’s Book Collection
Drive, and they
need your help. During
the next rainy day, I urge
you to head down to the
basement to go through
those bins of children
books collecting dust and
put them to good use —
donate them to another
child.
The drive runs from
July 9-Aug. 9 with a goal
to collect 3,000 books
in 30 days for Bernie’s
Book Bank in Lake Bluff.
There are four collection
sites this year, including
New Trier Township,
Winnetka Presbyterian
Church, Village
of Glencoe and Valarie
Wilson Travel (addresses
are listed in the Page 3
story). When I spoke with
the Township Communications
Director Jack
Macholl last week, he
said since beginning the
collections in 2016, the
township has brought in
more than 10,000 books
for at-risk children. The
township hall has even
become a year-round
collection site of Bernie’s
and averages a few hundred
books each month.
“After hearing Brian’s
story and getting to see
their operation, I talked
to the township board and
we got organized and began
this in 2016,” Macholl
told me. “We’ve been at it
ever since. The people of
the township have been so
receptive that we are now
a year-around collection
site for Bernie’s.”
It has been great to see
the drive grow throughout
the past four years. I
always enjoy hearing from
Macholl afterward to see
how the drive went, as
well. Hopefully this year
I’ll also publish a followup
story to update you on
how many books were
donated to Bernie’s. Stay
tuned and donate!
From Page 12
some of his paintings.
The Earl, known as
“Jack,” came to Chicago
in the summer of 1932
to paint some commissioned
murals, including
one for the 1933
Century of Progress. He
also painted a fresco in
the basement bar of the
Glencoe home of Morris
“James” Rosenbaum
Glaser.” Hastings had
met Glaser in London in
the 1920s. According to
Glaser’s daughter Sally
Dewey, Hastings and his
wife stayed at Glaser’s
home. While Hastings
painted the mural, Lady
Hastings enjoyed the
family’s swimming pool.
According to Lady
Hastings, Diego Rivera
was “very enthusiastic
about” the mural, and
Hastings was reported to
have made a replica for
an exhibit in Britain.
Capone, who was
incarcerated at the time,
never saw the mural, but
the only adverse criticism
of the artwork came from
one of his old cronies
who objected to the portrayal
of the gangster’s
moll. “Al never gave a
tumble to skirt like that,”
he said disgustedly. “He
wouldn’t give her a job
washing’ glasses in a
speak.”
Unfortunately, the
house containing this
extraordinary mural was
torn down and the original
artwork was lost to
the ages. You can, however,
read more about Lord
Hasting’s and his time
in Glencoe in a recent
biography published by
his daughter, Lady Selina
Hastings entitled, “The
Red Earl: The Extraordinary
Life of the 16th Earl
of Huntingdon.”
