Bees and Beyond program unites all parts of Chicago Botanic Garden
Anna Schultz, Editorial Intern
This summer, the Chicago Botanic
Garden in Glencoe will be
exploring the crucial role pollinators
play in our lives through
the Bees and Beyond program,
and they invite the community to
come along for the ride.
“The Bees and Beyond program
is a garden-wide theme
that presents a fun opportunity to
get everyone at the garden working
together on a project,” horticulturist
Kathryn Deery said.
Normally at the Chicago Botanic
Garden, each section of the
garden has a unique theme and
name. The Bees and Beyond
program is special because it
cuts across sections and invites
multiple departments to explore
pollinators.
Throughout the sections of the
garden is a focus on cultivating
flowers and plants that pollinators
like bees, wasps, flies, butterflies,
moths and birds can pollinate.
The garden is also featuring
displays both indoors and outdoors
like the Butterflies and
Blooms display and Pollinators
Perspective that “present lots of
opportunities to learn about and
watch pollinators,” Deery said.
The yellow Bees and Beyond
signs dispersed throughout the
garden share information about
The program unites all departments of the garden with a universal
pollinators theme.
the pollinator plants with gardengoers.
“We wanted to focus on turning
education about pollinators
into beautiful, visual displays,”
Deery added.
Not only is the program intended
to educate the public on
the importance of pollinators,
but it is also an opportunity for
the garden to learn more about
creating the best environment
for these organisms to pollinate.
Scientists at the garden have
studied pollinators and helped
create the garden features and
themed areas based on their research.
“Color, scent, flower shape and
timing are different factors that
affect how and where pollinators
pollinate,” Deery said.
With this information, the garden
has created displays that center
around each of these factors.
The garden is also hosting
different events and classes
throughout the summer to highlight
the work of pollinators and
educate the public.
“The After Hours Buzz event
is an exclusive, intimate setting
for participants to speak with
scientists about the program over
cocktails,” Deery said.
Many of the classes at the garden
this summer are pollinatorthemed,
as well. Even the summer
camp classes for kids are
used as an opportunity to educate
little ones on pollination.
“We want people to come to
the garden and learn about what
we are doing, but also show people
what they can do to help this
cause,” Deery said.
Each gardengoer can take
a Bees and Beyond brochure
which outlines ways to support
pollinators at home from planting
native pollinator plants to
simply spreading the word about
this issue.
“The Bees and Beyond program
is a unique intersection of
science, horticulture and education,”
Deery said.
“This program aligns perfectly
with the Chicago Botanic Garden’s
mission which is to cultivate
the power of plants to sustain
and enrich life,” Deery added.
The garden recognizes that this
cannot be done without supporting
the role of diverse pollinators,
she said.
