Former resident honored
at pumptrack dedication
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
There is a new mustvisit
attraction on Nebraska
Street, as the Frankfort
Park District and Operation
Playground joined forces
to create the Judy Herder
Memorial Pumptrack, a
modular track designed to
have accelerated elements
such as hills and banked
turns, which first opened
in the fall of 2018.
During a dedication celebration
held Thursday,
June 27, at Indian Boundary
Park, cyclists, skateboarders,
inline skaters
and more were invited to
try the course with a series
of time trial races dubbed
the Strider Cup. Frankfort
Park District staff, Village
of Frankfort officials, Operation
Playground board
members and the family
of Judy Herder were all on
hand to celebrate community,
as well as the lasting
legacy of the woman who
helped inspire the unique
project.
“It just seemed right to
name it the Judy Herder
Memorial Pumptrack,”
said Frankfort Park District
Executive Director
Gina Hassett. “Judy
Herder passed away in the
winter of 2016. She was
on the Operation Playground
Foundation board
since its inception, but she
also served on almost every
civic board here in the
community from the Historic
Preservation to the
PTO when her kids were
in school.”
Hassett explained that
Judy Herder and Phil Simmons,
the current president
and one of the initial board
Mount Zion resident Austin Perry takes a ride around
the Judy Herder Memorial Pumptrack on Thursday,
June 27, at Indian Boundary Park in Frankfort.
Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
members for the Operation
Playground Foundation,
had envisioned a place
for cyclists to enjoy a fun
course for many years.
“This is a great asset
for our district, and we
couldn’t have afforded it
if Operation Playground
didn’t fund it,” Hassett
said, noting the pumptrack’s
proximity to the
Old Plank Road Trail as a
key highlight.
Along with the Judy
Herder Memorial Pumptrack,
Operation Playground,
a non-profit organization
established by
volunteers in 2000, has
spearheaded several projects
in Frankfort, including
Fort Frankfort, Frankfort
Bark Park, three-on-three
basketball half courts at
Main Park and more.
Prior to the dedication
ceremony, people of all
ages enjoyed testing the
track with recreational laps
as well as time trials.
Recreation Supervisor
Maurice Sullivan explained
the Strider Cup
was a fun way to introduce
the community to the
pumptrack with a speedy,
timed event.
“We’re going to have
them set up to do two
laps around,” Sullivan
said. “Pretty much everybody
will get a prize, but
we want to let everybody
compete and see who gets
the best time around the
track.”
New Lenox-based FnA
Bicycles provided attendees
with striders and extra
helmets when needed,
and the Frankfort Police
Department was also on
hand, offering safety tips
and techniques.
“We’re going to talk
about making sure you
have a properly fitted helmet,”
Frankfort Police
Department Sgt. Leanne
Bender said. “That’s one
of the biggest things we
see with kids and adults
– mostly kids – is helmets
will not protect them if
they don’t fit them properly.”
Business owners throw appreciation lunch for Village workers
Nuria Mathog, Editor
Frankfort public works
employees and first responders
enjoyed a special
appreciation lunch July 20
designed to thank Village
employees for their hard
work.
The event, held at the 14
S. Hickory St. parking lot,
was hosted by Todd Morgan,
owner of LaSalle St.
Securities, and his wife,
There’s no place like Frankfort.
And, like you, we’re happy to call it home.
And we’re proud to be here celebrating
21 years of service. Thank you for your
business and your trust.
Cindy Morgan, who owns
the adjacent business Bokay
1:30 p.m., Village workers
trickled in during their lunch
break to pick up a hot dog
and chat with the couple.
Todd Morgan, a former
Village Board trustee, said
he made a lot of connections
with Frankfort employees
during his time in
public office.
“All these guys I know,”
he said. “All the guys in
the police department basically
used to work for
me, and the public works
people and the fire department.
And they do such an
amazing job in the community,
keeping our Village
so clean and nice and
they fix everything. And I
think people don’t really
know how it’s all done.”
On the lunch menu were
hot dogs, burgers, chips and
beverages, along with items
from a Joey’s Maxwell
Street Polish food truck.
“I got this at a charity
auction for The Cancer
Support Center in the fall,
appreciation lunch thanking Village workers and first
responders. Nuria Mathog/22nd Century Media
and it’s for 80 people,”
Todd Morgan said of the
truck. “So, I decided to
give it back to the community
for the public service
people.”
The Morgans said they
hope to host the event
again next year.
“If it’s a charity item
again, for the cancer support
group, I’ll bid on it
again,” Todd Morgan said.
“We’ll do the same thing.”
Hand signals and bicycling
etiquette were also
topics discussed by Frankfort
police, and bicycle
registration was also available
during the event.
Mount Zion resident
Austin Perry, who attended
the event with his girlfriend,
Kate Herder — a
Frankfort resident and Judy
Herder’s granddaughter —
enjoyed the experience of
riding on the pumptrack.
“I love it,” Perry said.
“It’s absolutely an awesome
time. It seems to be
a good investment into
the community, I think,
because it’s a use to people
of all ages. As long as
you’ve got something with
wheels, you can use it.”
Kate Herder noted that
her grandmother would
have been proud to have
the pumptrack named in
her honor.
“I think it’s absolutely
amazing,” she said. “It’s
something she worked on
for a really long time. It’s
not something that a lot of
places have. It’s something
unique that can draw people
into Frankfort. I know
Frankfort is definitely a
destination place for a lot
of people.”
LW Band, weather heat up for national anthem
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
When the 205 members
Lincoln-Way Marching
Band played the national
anthem Saturday, June 29,
they were doing so at one
of Chicagoland’s most recognizable
venues: Guaranteed
Rate Field, home of
the Chicago White Sox.
It was the second year
in a row that the band had
been invited to play in
front of the 40,615-capacity
crowd.
“We were here last year.
We had a great time,” Band
Director Chris Mroczek
said. “It was a great fundraiser
and a great experience
for the community, so
we decided to do it again
this year.”
The band, along with the
color guard, practiced for
three weeks in anticipation
of its performance.
The hard work showed,
as the crowd cheered while
the band took the field,
marching out of the center
field tunnel and onto the
outfield grass.
Meghan Cullum, a sophomore
at Lincoln-Way
Central and a member of
the color guard admitted
to a touch of the butterflies
while the group waited in
the tunnel for the visiting
team, the Minnesota
Twins, to finish up its batting
practice.
“It’s fun, but it’s also
kind of scary because there
are just so many people out
there just watching you,”
she said.
Other band members
used that anxiousness as
motivation.
“A lot of us here are Sox
fans, so it’s humbling for
sure,” said Ethan Machamer,
a baritone player from
Lincoln-Way East. “We
just concentrate on playing
our music, and that’s all
that really matters. … It’s
a little nerve-wracking, but
after 15 seconds, you’re
good.”
James Hauser, a senior
at East who plays the quad
drums, siad he was grateful
to have the chance to play
twice at the home field of
the team he supports.
“It’s just really exciting.
Me, as a Sox fan, it’s fun
to come and actually play
at the game and support
the team that I enjoy supporting,”
Hauser said. “It’s
actually really, really cool
to see all the underground
and all the under workings
of it. And being actually
out on the field is a really
amazing experience. It’s
really, really cool.
“... Coming here I’m a
little more familiar with it,
but I’m just as excited, it’s
still just as exhilarating going
out there. You’re like,
‘Oh my gosh. So many
people out there watching
me, so many people out
there.’ And the sun is still
just as hot as last year.”
And hot it was, with the
mercury touching near
90 degrees. But the heat
wasn’t going to stop band
members like Mikey Schlinski,
a senior at Lincoln-
Way West, from soaking
up every moment on the
field.
“It was awesome. This
was my second year of
doing it,” Schelinski said.
“From last lear to this year,
the feeling doesn’t get old.
It was really cool to see everybody
cheering.
“I was pretty excited
because I used to come
here all the time when I
was younger, so coming
out to the field and playing
for everybody is pretty
unreal.”
residence on June 24.
According to Frankfort
Deputy Police Chief Kevin
Keegan, the resident of
a home in the 700 block of
Cottonwood Road returned
home and discovered the
door was kicked in and the
house was ransacked. Approximately
$5,000 worth
the driver, identified as
Turner, who allegedly had
slurred speech, believed he
was in Hazel Crest and had
breath that smelled of alcohol.
Keegan said.
Turner was taken into custody
after reportedly failing
sobriety testing.
June 21
A young injured deer
found by a Frankfort resident
on June 25 is on the
path to recovery after receiving
medical attention
and care from an area refuge.
Frankfort Deputy Police
Chief Kevin Keegan
said the resident contacted
the department about a
fawn discovered in some
bushes in the Butternut
FREE PARKING & SHUTTLE
at Trinity College & Palos Courts
Saturday and Sunday
3:30 p.m. — 11:30 p.m.
Creek subdivision. An officer
dispatched to the site
noticed the fawn had an
injured leg and brought
the animal back to the
police department before
calling around to find a
refuge able to care for the
animal.
“The fawn was released
to a refuge later in the day,
where they casted the leg
and hydrated the fawn,”
Keegan said.
The Settler’s Pond Shelter
initially took in the
fawn, which was later taken
to Critter’s Crossing for
further care, according to
the police department.
My name is MJ. Yes, I’m
named after Michael
Jordan. He was called Air
Jordan; I am called Air Kitty.
He was called Black Cat; I
am an orange long-haired
cat. I even sport my parachute fur pants like I’m
MC Hammer. I am an 8-year-old senior male and
I deserve all the attention. I love cuddling with my
human ever since the day she rescued me from
a dirty basement in Indiana. Living in Frankfort is
a dream life of cat-grass, toys, love, cuddles, and
treats. I’ve always been curious of guests and very
friendly. I enjoy being apart of the festivities. People
know I’m coming around because my nonstop purr
is equivalent to a helicopter. I’ll never be silenced.
On that note, if you ever meet me, please don’t
hesitate to give me love.
Up until this spring, a library
for the long-anticipated
nfyn
From Page 8
in season, Brookdale Orland
Park invited friends,
family and the community
in for a summer celebration
on June 21 — the start
of summer and longest day
of the year — as well as
an open house to meet the
new management.
The event included a variety
of raffles, live entertainment,
food, drinks and
more.
“It warms the residents’
hearts to bring people into
their home,” said Sharon
Puschkar, resident
programs coordinator at
Brookdale Orland Park.
“This is their home.”
Proceeds from the raffles
and donations go toward
Brookdale’s participation
in the annual Walk to End
Alzheimer’s, according to
Matt Gonzalez, Brookdale
Orland Park’s new executive
director.
“[Alzheimer’s is] something
we’re working with
every single day,” he said.
“We try to make sure as a
Pumptrack, a project
named after a longtime
Frankfort resident who
was deeply involved with
many local organizations
and dedicated much of
her life to making the
Village a better place.
The Station has
covered the pumptrack
since fundraising for the
project began back in
2017, and I’m glad that
so many area residents
have been able to put it
to good use. It is a welcome
addition to Indian
Boundary Park, as well
as a wonderful way to
company and community
that we’re making a difference.”
At the beginning of the
year, new management
came aboard at Brookdale
Orland Park, including a
new executive director, as
well as managing staff for
health and wellness, dining,
and memory care.
“Everyone has got a ton
of experience and brings a
lot of new energy and excitement
for the residents,”
Gonzalez said.
The June 21 event was
the first of its kind for the
community, but Gonzalez
plans to continue hosting
similar events for the residents,
their families and
the community.
“Almost every month,
we’re planning on doing
something new for the
community,” he said. “We
want to let the residents
and their families know
who the new team is.”
and to creating an environment
The pumptrack is just
one of several ways that
Herder’s work continues
to stand out and inspire
others. The medicine
wheel garden near the
Founders Community
Center was developed
under her guidance, and
Frankfort residents have
continued to care for the
project throughout the
past few years. Additionally,
the annual Winter
on the Green series —
another community staple
in which she played
an integral founding role
— continues to delight
village residents with ice
carving demonstrations
and fondue samples each
year.
I encourage local
residents to head to the
park to check out the
new attraction whenever
they get the chance. I am
sure Herder would be delighted
to see her legacy
Nine reach highest level
in Girl Scouts together
Bella Zarlengo
Freelance Reporter
On June 4, the nine
young women that make
up the Mokena Girl Scout
troop 70980 were honored
with a bridging ceremony
signifying their new titles
as lifetime members.
Tori Zoetvelt, Alyssa
Ramirez, Addy Kolsto,
Calista Harvey, Kelly Garcia,
Alexis Madorma, Kat
Flesher, Anna Fushi and
Tori Bailey have all been in
the same troop since sixth
grade. Some of the girls in
the troop have been apart
of the Girl Scouts organization
since they were in kindergarten,
others since first
and second grade.
Every Girl Scout is honored
with a bridging ceremony
as they reach each
higher level of the organization.
Each member
moves through the levels
Daisy, Brownie, Junior,
Cadette, Senior and Ambassador.
And once members
graduate high school
they are honored with a
ceremony as they become
lifetime members. At this
final bridging ceremony,
the young women’s parents
honored them with a box
filled with flowers from
past bridging ceremonies
and pictures.
During their journey
as Girl Scouts, the young
women worked through
service events to earn their
bronze, silver and gold
service awards. The troop
focused mainly on feeding
the hungry for their service
work. For their silver award
as Girl Scout Cadettes they
fasted for an entire day,
having only a baked potato
to eat, in attempts to simulate
what it is like to live in
a third world country.
The young women, along
with the rest of the Mokena
Girl Scout troops, also took
a trip to New York and
passed out bags containing
mittens, non perishable
food, tissues and other essentials
to homeless people
in the city. The 9-80s,
as they call themselves,
planned the entire trip, as
well as the fundraising, for
all 40 of the members to be
able to take the trip.
“That was very rewarding,
actually,” Fushi said.
“People were extremely
grateful.”
The girls also used to
work with the Ronald Mc-
Donald House nearly once
a month, participated in
Feed My Starving Children
and collected gently worn
shoes for the Share Your
Soles foundation.
“I figure, total over the
course of their Girl Scout
years, they’ve each done
close to 1,000 service
hours,” Troop leader Melanie
Kolsto said.
Melanie, who all of the
girls refer to as “Mom”
even though she is only really
related to Addy, said
that her troop is unique because
very few troops stay
together for as long as the
9-80’s have.
“Fifth grade is the high
drop off point. The girls
that do stay past fifth grade
are generally one or two in
a troop. It’s rare that there’s
nine of them,” Melanie
said.
The girls agreed that
their friendships were the
main reason they all stayed
with the organization until
they reached the highest
level possible. The troop
met twice a month during
their Girl Scout years.
“It’s a good break from
everything else, to have the
same nine girls you can talk
to,” Flesher said.
The troop was also sure
to attribute part of their
bond with the amount of
difficult moments they
have gone through together.
Eighteen months ago,
the troop lost their co-leader
Debbie Harvey, Calista’s
mom, to battle with cancer.
And at the same time, Fushi
was also battling cancer.
“My favorite memory is,
about two years ago, I got
sick with cancer and everybody
here was very, very
supportive and did a lot of
things for me,” Fushi said.
While all nine girls have
been in the same troop
since sixth grade, some
have known each other
since their very first years
in Girl Scouts. During their
final bridging ceremony,
Ramirez put together a
slideshow to show all of
the memories the troop has
shared together.
All of the girls recently
graduated from high
school: Fushi and Garcia
from Lincoln Way Central,
and the rest from Lincoln-
Way East. And while most
of the girls will be going
to different schools
out of state, the few girls
who are staying close to
home are planning on getting
lunch often with their
troop leader. And all of the
girls agreed they will spend
most of their breaks from
school with each other,
just as they have for the
past six years.
The Dish
Gina’s Teardrop Cafe big on serving community
Sean Hastings
Contributing Editor
Veterans eat for free
from 6:30-8 a.m. on the
last Monday of every
month at Gina’s Teardrop
Cafe in New Lenox. It has
been that way for approximately
two years.
“When my father passed
and we were at the cemetery,
everybody there
volunteers, and it just gave
me the inspiration that we
need to do something,”
owner Gina Buck said.
“It’s a big turnout. And
their stories are unreal.
It has turned into a great
event that we do.”
Gina said it is nice to
see new faces show up
for the veterans breakfast
who then continue to come
APRIL BLAIR
Broker
back and eventually become
regulars.
The cafe also welcomes
in an art class from Martino
Junior High School
in New Lenox to paint the
front windows three times
a year to coincide with
the different seasons and
holidays. It also does food
drives during Thanksgiving
and toy drives during
the Christmas season.
“Anytime we can chip
in, we donate,” Buck said.
“We really do try to give
back. Whenever we can
help somebody, we definitely
try to.”
Buck admitted that because
of the location of the
cafe — on the far west side
of town — some people
may not know it is there,
www.crisrealty.net
because they do not have
to drive that way. But she
loves where it is located
And the cafe will celebrate
six years in November.
When it first opened,
only the main dining area
existed, but a year-and-ahalf
into things, it outgrew
that space.
Luckily, the space next
door was occupied by
Kevin Molloy Insurance,
which moved to the other
end of the mall to help with
Teardrop’s expansion.
Gina’s Teardrop Cafe
serves both breakfast and
lunch. It also caters food
for different events, a service
that has become more
popular as of late. Teardrop
may even host a wedding
later in the summer.
On the regular menu,
the breakfast tacos ($8) are
popular, as are the biscuits
and gravy ($7 full order,
$5 half, can be topped with
two eggs any style for $1).
The menu also has some
“hidden gems” in their
specials section. Special
#3 — which is one egg any
style, a cup of fruit, a side
of avocado and a piece of
toast ($8) — has become a
popular item, as well.
“When we did the menu
revision four months ago
to update it, that is one
that gets a lot of orders,”
said Gina’s husband and
co-owner, Ken. “We try to
stay current.”
Gina said if they think
of something good, they
will put it up as a special,
instead of regularly updating
the menu.
“We try to stay with the
trends,” she said. “Everybody’s
eating avocado.”
The Teardop Skillet
($14) has also become
a top-seller for the cafe,
which is the Meat Lover
Skillet (sausage, bacon,
ham, onions, green peppers,
cheddar and mozzarella
cheese) topping with
homemade country gravy
and biscuits.
The cafe also sells alcohol
now, with drinks like
Bloody Mary’s and mimosas
on offer.
The Teardrop Skillet ($14) at Gina’s Teardrop Cafe can
be served with toast or pancakes. It is the Meat Lovers
Skillet with the addition of homemade country gravy
and biscuits. Photos by Sean Hastings/22nd Century
Media
Special #3 ($8) at Gina’s Teardrop Cafe in New Lenox is
one egg any style, a cup of fruit, a side of avocado and
a piece of toast.
“It’s something new for
us that has really taken
off,” Gina said. “It’s another
thing that helps keep
us current, because people
are doing that.”
As far as what the future
holds for Gina’s Teardrop
Cafe, Ken wants to focus
on each years as it comes,
while continuing to grow
the veterans breakfast,
community work and the
catering side of the business.
“For the military breakfast,
we’ve had customers
come in and see that and
want to contribute,” Ken
said. “We had [a veteran]
from Pennsylvania as a
traveler come, give us a
card and said he’d like to
help offset the cost we incur
from the breakfast. We
sent him a card back and a
picture of what we provide
here.”
Other customers, especially
around the holidays,
have shown interest in
helping out with the veteran’s
breakfast, too, Ken
said.

Henning was slowed
by injuries last season but
certainly looked 100 percent
in the spring when he
returned to the track team
and finished fourth in the
state in the 100 meters.
East coach Rob Zvonar
said it’s been great having
a healthy Henning in camp
this summer.
“It’s been a lot of fun
this summer,” Zvonar said.
“I’m happy for him more
so than the team. That was
tough adversity for him to
go through last year.”
Henning said he can’t
wait for the fall.
“I’m so excited,” he said.
“I’m coming off last year
when I had a couple injuries
set me back. This year
I’m 100 percent healthy,
ready to go. We’ve had a
strong offseason and we’re
ready to keep the momentum
going into the fall.”
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Erika Ho
LW East student Erika Ho
recently finished her freshman
season on the LW
co-op lacrosse team.
What is your favorite
memory from this last
season?
Definitely winning the
first sectional championship
in program history.
That was a big milestone
for the whole program.
What have you
learned from coach
Kathryn Allison?
She always talks about
just having fun with everything.
She brought so
much energy to the team.
She guided our whole
team and it was a lot of fun
to play for her and I really
appreciate it.
You recently competed
in the Under Armour
All-American tryout
and Lax for a Cure.
Explain those?
The Under Armour All-
American is basically a
tryout for a specific region.
Some of them were the
Midwest, South, West, and
Long Island area. It’s to
play in a tournament and
represent the region you
are from. Lax for a Cure
was with my club team.
You play the top club
teams in the country for
charity.
When did you start
playing lacrosse?
I started playing when
I was in kindergarten. It’s
been a part of my life for
a while.
What is something
difficult about lacrosse
people may not know?
People say it’s the fastest
game played on two
feet. It’s very unique, it’s
the oldest team sport out
there. There’s more adversity
and skills involved
that you need to use in order
to excel.
Do you play any other
sports than lacrosse?
I play tennis for the high
school team. It helps with
hand-eye coordination
that can translate to the lacrosse
field.
You had a pretty
successful season. Any
specific goals for next
year?
As a team next year, for
high school, I’d like to
make it farther. We got to
the supersectional, if we
22ND CENTURY MEDIA FILE PHOTO
could get our team to the
state finals and be a top
four team in the state, that
would be amazing.
Who is your favorite
athlete?
Taylor Cummings. She
has done an amazing job
promoting the sport and
she’s an all-around excellent
athlete. She is definitely
a women’s lacrosse
player worth looking up to.
What do you attribute
your versatility on the
field to?
I play midfield. You’re
responsible for both attack
and defense. If you can
play midfield, you can play
anywhere. It just comes
with the position, so it’s
something that I’m used to.
Netflix or Hulu?
I watch a lot of Netflix.
My favorite show is
“Criminal Minds.” I’ve
watched it a lot, it’s a pretty
long series.
Interview conducted by Editorial
Intern Joe Bielanski.

‘It felt like home’: LW East’s Henning chooses Michigan
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
AJ Henning’s recruiting
journey has taken him on
visits to several of the top
college football programs
in the country, but Michigan
always stood out to the
Lincoln-Way East star.
When the rising senior,
a receiver/running back,
made his official visit to
Michigan from June 21 to
23, he knew his mind was
made up. He wanted to be
a Wolverine.
“I was there three days
and by the second day, I
knew it was the place for
me,” Henning said.
Henning, rated as the
top recruit in Illinois in
the Class of 2020 by 247
Sports, announced his decision
to commit to Michigan
via a Twitter video
June 26.
He had 33 scholarship
offers from major
programs and had taken
visits to Illinois, Northwestern,
Georgia, Florida,
Alabama, Louisville
and Notre Dame over the
spring and summer.
None of them felt quite
like Michigan.
“I felt like throughout
my whole recruiting process
with me and my family,
the biggest thing was
looking for the total fit,”
Henning said. “Do they
offer great academics, do
I fit in socially, do I fit in
with what the team is trying
to do scheme-wise and
stuff of that nature? When
we sat back and looked
at everything, Michigan
checked the boxes for everything.
“It felt like home when I
was there.”
Along with the video,
Henning tweeted, “I’m
coming home.”
He also referred to Ann
Arbor as home in the video.
“When I think about
home, a couple things
come to mind,” Henning
said in the video. “Home
is unconditional love, nurtured
dreams and unlimited
encouragement.
“Home is the family by
your side that will always
have your back. It’s the
comfort in knowing you’re
always protected and the
people you love are always
by your side. Home is the
love I’ll feel from 110,000
screaming fans when I
step into ‘The Big House’
[Michigan Stadium].
Home is the University
of Michigan. I’m coming
home.”
In May, Henning talked
about his excitement in
meeting Michigan coach
and former Bears quarterback
Jim Harbaugh – as
well as Alabama coach
Nick Saban.
“Getting to meet all
these coaches, Nick Saban,
Harbaugh, I’ve always
dreamed of that,” Henning
said at the time. “It’s pretty
cool to actually meet
them in person, shake their
hand and have a conversation
with them.
“There have been a lot
of fun moments and I’m
just trying to enjoy the
whole process.”
Henning also became
enamored with new Michigan
offensive coordinator
Josh Gattis, who left Alabama
for Ann Arbor.
“What mostly excites
me is definitely the offense,”
he said. “With Josh
Gattis’ new offense, some
of the things they’ve put
in fit my skill set perfectly.
I’m most excited about
that offense and getting to
play for coach Harbaugh.”
Michigan has now
landed commitments from
the top player in Illinois
in three straight classes,
including Crystal Lake
South offensive tackle
Trevor Keegan, who was
ranked No. 1 in the Class
of 2019, and Nazareth’s
rising junior quarterback
JJ McCarthy, the top player
in the Class of 2021.
“We’re getting that Illinois
to Michigan pipeline
going,” Henning said. “It’s
going to be great having
those guys in the locker
room with me.”
Henning’s teammate,
Sean McLaughlin, was
pitching in a summer playoff
baseball game when
Henning posted the video
and heard the news after.
McLaughlin is set to compete
against Henning in
the Big 10, having committed
to play football at
Northwestern.
“AJ came to our school
in sixth grade and I was
one of the first kids to
walk him around, he was
in my class,” McLaughlin
said. “For him to be this
successful, it’s unbelievable.
It’s awesome news to
hear.”
Henning, a consensus
four-star recruit, is ranked
as the No. 78 player and
No. 16 receiver in the nation
by 247Sports.
Rivals has him as the
No. 3 all-purpose back,
No. 84 overall and No.
2 in Illinois behind East
St. Louis safety Antonio
Johnson.
THREE LW EAST
FOOTBALL GAMES TO
LOOK FORWARD TO
THIS FALL
1. Stevenson at LW
East, Aug. 30
The Griffins’ season
opener is intriguing
for a number of
reasons, most
notably to see the
debut of a new
starting quarterback,
likely senior Kyle
Quinn (above).
2. Homewood-
Flossmoor at LW
East, Sept. 27
The Griffins crushed
the Vikings 48-6
last season, an
extremely rare
blowout in the
series between
the two SouthWest
Suburban
conference powers.
H-F will be angry.
3. LW East at LW
Central, Oct. 4
The Knights have
while LW East is
loaded with Division
I talent.
Summer roundup
LW East baseball wins regional; Griffins compete in massive hoops tourney
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Nothing accomplished
in the summer playoffs
will make up for the crushing
upset loss Lincoln-
Way East suffered in the
first round of the IHSA
postseason this spring.
The Griffins were the
No. 1 seed in the Lockport
Sectional and fell to No.
17 seed Romeoville.
That defeat, however,
gave the Griffins a little
more reason than most
teams to be excited to compete
for a summer title.
“Getting knocked out
early really stunned all
of us,” rising senior Sean
McLaughlin said. “Getting
back out here is big. All of
us, especially the seniors,
really wanted to get back
into competitive games,
kind of put that loss behind
us.
“We’re just trying to develop
confidence over the
summer.”
So far, so good.
The Griffins rolled to the
Chicago Christian Regional
title, winning all three of
their games by at least five
runs and cruising to a 14-1
win over the host Knights
in five innings in the championship
game June 26.
Rising senior Cael Geijer
led the way with five
RBI on a two-run single in
the second, an RBI triple
in the fourth and a two-run
double later in the fourth.
“I felt like I was really
focused,” Geijer said.
“I’ve just been practicing
every day. My coaches and
I talk all the time. They
know what I need to do
better and I know what I
need to do better and I’ve
just been homing in on it.”
The Griffins advanced
to the Lockport Sectional,
which is set to begin July
8, along with the host Porters,
Sandburg and Lincoln-Way
West.
In the regional final, East
scored a run in the first, four
in the second and exploded
for nine in the fourth to ensure
an early finish.
“We definitely hit the
ball the best [June 26] of
the three days,” East coach
Eric Brauer said. “[In a
10-5 win over Chicago
Christian on June 25], we
got up big and relaxed a
little bit. This game, we
scored a lot late and guys
hit some balls really hard.
“We had a goal of winning
this week so we could
keep playing and we got
that done.”
Nick Mergenthaler and
Davey Fitzpatrick each
knocked in a pair of runs
for the Griffins, while
McLaughlin, Anthony
Panzella and Cade Turner
combined to hold the
Knights to just one run.
East opened the doubleelimination
tournament
with a 7-1 win over Oak
Forest on June 24.
“Our seniors were ready
to go,” Brauer said. “We
were able to add a doubleheader
the week of [spring]
state finals against Palatine
and all our seniors
were like, ‘Yes, we want to
play.’ They’re the most excited
guys in the program.
They’ve been through it and
they’ve seen what it takes.
“Last year, we lost our
first summer playoff game
and then we lost our first
playoff game this spring,
so these guys want to experience
success and have
some fun.”
Griffins boys basketball
team competes in live
period events
Lincoln-Way East participated
in the 72-team
Ridgewood Shootout from
Friday, June 28 to Sunday,
June 30.
The Griffins opened the
tournament with a 54-41
win over Grayslake Central,
but finished the event
with a 1-3 record.
East was highly competitive
in losses to state
power Morgan Park, falling
65-59, and Glenbrook
South, falling 59-56.
The Griffins ended the
tournament with a 48-31
loss to Benet on Sunday,
June 30.
A week earlier, East went
4-0 at the Willowbrook
Shootout, beating Niles
West, Clark, Northridge
and Timothy Christian.
Both showcases were
part of the NCAA’s new
June live period, which
allows college coaches to
recruit over two weeks in
which players are competing
for their high school
teams, rather than in AAU
tournaments.
The rule change resulted
in the creation of many
huge high school summer
tournaments across the state
over the last two weeks and
has created some new excitement
surrounding summer
basketball on the high
school level.
“I think it is terrific,”
East coach Rich Kolimas
said. “I think the colleges
get a better read of the
players with their high
school teams. Yes, AAU
ball serves its purpose
but in these [high school
summer games] there’s
defense being played, and
strategy being executed. I
think you can get a much
better read on the players.”
LISTEN Up
“What mostly excites me is definitely the offense. With Josh Gattis’ new
offense, some of the things they’ve put in fit my skill set perfectly. I’m
most excited about that offense and getting to play for coach Harbaugh.”
