Diokno’s signature The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Wednesday released the first set of banknotes bearing the name and signature of BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno, who took his oath of office as the fifth head of the central monetary authority on 6 March. The release marks the anniversary of the BSP and is part of the celebrations in connection with 70 years of central banking in the Philippines. The 20-piso, 50-piso, 100-piso, 200- piso, 500-piso and 1,000-piso banknotes with the Governor’s name and signature are the freshest set of peso bills printed under the currently-circulated “New Generation Currency” series. Since 1949, Philippine currency has borne the signatures of the President of the Republic of the Philippines and the Governor of the Central Bank of the Philippines, which is now the BSP. Republic Act (RA) 7653 (The New Central Bank Act) of 1993, as amended by RA 11211 of 2019, mandates that the banknotes are signed by state authorities. Globe-led common tower pact The two tower firms are among the initial pool which signed up with the DICT for the initiative Globe Telecom Inc., Aboitiz Infracapital and Frontier Tower Associates Philippines (FTAP) have signed a common tower agreement to improve internet connectivity in the cities of Cebu, Davao and Subic. Aboitiz, in a disclosure to the stock exchange, said the agreement will explore the possibility of leasing build-to-suit sites, towers and other passive telecommunications infrastructure and facilities. The deal, signed on 2 July, comes after Aboitiz and FTAP signed an agreement on 19 June to develop, construct, operate and maintain a common tower network, which is also in line with the Department of Communications and Technology’s (DICT) common tower initiative. The pact is seen to expand the Ayala-led telco giant’s existing coverage and capacity. “Tower sharing is a means to address the demand for better internet experience. Our collaboration with tower experts will enable us to fast track the construction of cell sites and towers in unserved and underserved areas as well as congested urban centers,” Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu was quoted as saying. Globe earlier on came up with an agreement with Megawide Construction Corp.’s ISOC Infrastructure and Malaysia’s edotco Group to construct 150 telco towers primarily in the CALABARZON region, making it the first telco player to back the DICT initiative. The two tower firms are among the initial pool which signed up with the DICT for the initiative. The initiative calls for the providers to partner with a telco company before the government could assist them in the facilitation of permits, right of way, and other government permits to build the infrastructure. The passive infrastructure, including towers and support structures, can eventually be shared with other telco service providers PLDT Inc. and upcoming third telco, Mislatel Consortium. Aside from augmenting the telco players’ service quality through increased tower density, common towers are also expected to lower the cost of management for the telco companies, and down the road the service cost for the consumers. has resigned from his position as non-executive director for Pangilinan-led, Hong Kong-listed First Pacific Company Ltd. effective on 1 July. A disclosure to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 2 July stated that Del Rosario, who was recently barred from entering Hong Kong, had quit the post due to “poor health as he approaches the age of 80 years.” The memo added the 79-year-old former DFA chief’s “increased involvement in a number of personal advocacies which makes it difficult for him to continue to serve as a director for the company” as other reasons for his tendering his resignation. “Ambassador Del Rosario confirmed that he has no disagreement with the Board and that he is not aware of any matter relating to his resignation that needs to be brought to the attention of the shareholders of the Company and The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited,” the disclosure said. It also stated that Del Rosario has “no claims against the company whatsoever, whether in respect of fees, remuneration or compensation for loss of office.” To recall, Del Rosario was barred from entering Hong Kong on 21 June and was held and questioned for over five hours at the Hong Kong International Airport. He was supposed to attend a board meeting for First Pacific. The denial of his entry also came a month after former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales was initially barred from entering Hong Kong and detained for a few hours. In March, Morales and Del Rosario filed a case against Chinese leader Xi Jinping to the International Criminal Court for China’s island-building activities in the South China Sea. Del Rosario served as the country’s DFA secretary from March 2011 to March 2016, and was First Pacific’s non-executive director since June 2016. First Pacific has investments in PLDT, Metro Pacific Investments Corp., Meralco, Maynilad, Philex Mining Corp. and Light Rail Manila Corp. But apart from being known for our signature warmth and hospitality, we are proud to be a company that values sustainability,” Neki Liwanag, WILI assistant vice president for corporate planning and compliance, said. The partnership was established in 2018 when WILI made the switch to Cleanergy by signing up with AboitizPower for its 1.5-megawatt energy requirement that has since increased to 2.5 MW. The supply is sourced from one of AboitizPower’s renewable plants, the MakBan Geothermal Power Plant that spans across the provinces of Batangas and Laguna. Liwanag also said that efforts for Widus to be more sustainable are in line with the vision for the Clark Freeport Zone to become a modern and premier estate that boasts of industrial, commercial and tourist facilities. “With the rapid development of Clark, we, as a locator, must continue to meet the changing demands of our market. We also want for Widus to remain competitive and we believe going renewable and having a dependable partner can do just that,” Liwanag said. WILI signed a power supply agreement with AboitizPower under the Retail Competition and Open Access scheme, which allows businesses and institutions with a monthly average peak demand of 750 kilowatts to source their energy supply from a retail electricity supplier. The partnership was established in 2018 when WILI made the switch to Cleanergy by signing up with AboitizPower for its 1.5-MW energy requirement that has since increased to 2.5 MW. In the order issued by the commission en banc on 4 June, the SEC directed ALMAMICO and ALAMCCO to stop selling securities in the form of investment contracts to the public, as they lack the license from the commission to do so, constituting a violation of Section 8.1 of Republic Act 8799, or the Securities Regulation Code. “The scheme satisfies the elements of an investment contract, as follows: there is a placement of money; 2) the money invested is placed in a common enterprise; 3) there is an expectation of profits; 4) the expected profits are generated from the entrepreneurial and managerial efforts of others,” the SEC said. The SEC added that ALMAMICO and ALAMCCO’s operations also constitutes a Ponzi scheme, as it invites members to invest certain amounts in exchange for an unrealistic monthly return, which in the said company’s case is 35 percent.
