Q: You have created such a strong DNA of your brand. What does it take
to constantly come up with new creations, yet always have that unmistakable
Temperley design?
A: I find inspiration in everything – people, cities, cultures, nature….. I have an
archive of amazing things – fabrics, laces, books, prints and artifacts; these
have always been an important source of inspiration for me. It’s all in the
detail and I am always looking and sourcing - especially when I am travelling.
I am inspired by the city but also the relaxed attitude of the country… I also
love fantasy and travel. I have always tried to be true to myself and my
family heritage. Clothes should be about escapism…..being free.
Q: You have dressed from British Royalty to Hollywood Royalty. Who would
you still like to see wear your dresses?
A: I have been privileged to work with and dress so many inspiring women.
My muses are also my friends. They are all unique, empowered and creative
women - Arizona Muse, Laura Bailey, Nathalie Emmanuel, Olga Kurylenko
and Ellen Von Unwerth…to name a few…
Q: How much of your brand is dedicated to the Bridal line and what makes
it so special?
A: I enjoy designing bridal the most as I am creating fantasy dresses for that
one special day in a woman’s life and I am honored to be a part of that. I
think the way in which people are getting married is evolving... destination
weddings, multiple events and several outfit changes means the traditional
dress isn’t the only option. There is still obviously an abundance of traditional
weddings - but nowadays, a lot of couples are also opting for a modern or
unconventional wedding. There are more risks being taken with their choice
of dress. When designing a collection, I have realized that it is important to
offer a variety of options – we have romantic, timeless dresses alongside
more glamourous and bohemian styles.
Q: The fashion industry has become so competitive. What does it take to
stay ahead of the pack?
A: I make clothes as I love them and I am passionate about the process…..
maybe it’s just a little back to front. I am very passionate about patterns,
textiles and fabrics as this is my training so these are my starting points when
I begin to design new collections. I have also always approached things in
my own way and have never been interested in trends and fads.
Q: You have two flagships In the Middle East. How important is the Arab
market to you and do you create special looks for it?
A: I find Middle Eastern women to be some of the most sophisticated around
the world - they love colour, pattern and really enjoy dressing up, often
wearing total looks.
Q: Describe the typical Temperley client?
A: The Temperley woman dresses with confidence and effortless ease. She
is not a slave to trends and is individual with her own look. She needs an
all-encompassing, functional yet ‘spirited’ wardrobe that takes her from day
to night and transcends the seasons. She invests in timeless pieces that will still
be relevant in years to come.
Q: If you are not dressed in Temperley London, who do you wear?
A: I almost only wear Temperley London but I love finding and wearing
vintage pieces. I go to Portobello Market when I can, and when I am in Paris
I always try to go to the flea markets. This is an important source of inspiration
for me.
Q: You are devoted to your family, friends and business; how do you juggle
it all?
A: I had no idea how much having a child would change my whole world.
Your child is your focus and everything else comes second. Being a working
mother means my life is a constant juggling act. Fox comes first and I try
and fit my work schedule around him and enjoying some time in Somerset
with friends and family. It’s a very soulful place and it keeps my feet on the
ground.
Q: The biggest lesson in life your business has taught you?
A: Work hard, trust yourself and follow your instincts…intuition is key. Most
importantly you must have drive and passion for what you do – this is what
gets you up in the morning. Be brave, decisive and at the same time learn
from your mistakes!
