Moments
Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion
Marymount had a great turnout this year
for the annual GRACEful dinner, with 276
parents, alumnae, prospective families, faculty,
and students participating in important
conversations about diversity and inclusion at
the School. In small groups, attendees watched a
video called “Inclusion Starts with I” and Upper
School students led discussions of current news
topics such as DACA, Charlottesville, and the
transgender military ban. The event was a great
opportunity to increase awareness and inspire
action in our community – to, in Gandhi’s
words, “be the change that you wish to see in
the world.”
Activating
Student
Engagement
After attending a NYSAIS professional development
session on “Imaginative Inquiry,” Class II teachers were
inspired to revamp their social studies curriculum,
which explores the history and people of New York
City from the Lenape Native Americans to Dutch
explorers to immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. This
year, students began their immersion into history by
entering time machines built in STEAM class while
singing a chant created in music class. In each lesson,
students are engaged in conventions of drama, such as
pantomimes, role-playing, and tableaus, to bring the
content to life. By taking on the perspective of the past,
students gain empathy for another person’s story.
