Wheels of Change
For over eleven years Get Cycling CiC has introduced tens of thousands
of people to cycling: through bike try-out roadshows, loan programmes,
schools activity days, disability support and our local bike shop.
From our base in Fulford, York, we operate nationally, offering all types of
bikes for all types of people. We believe that for Get Cycling to become
community based then it should be genuinely community owned. We
are therefore converting to a charity in the form of a Community Benefit
Society. This will give broad local ownership and a package of strong
benefits for members – as well as empowering us to do more for all
cyclists in York.
During our offer launch we will be inviting you to become a community
shareholder and member, supporting all our work, while enjoying a
package of benefits for members, including a return on investment.

Already in Motion
Our bike shop is only one part of what we do. You’ll soon see a lot more
of us around York: working for community groups, schools, workplaces,
people with disabilities and more. Our sixteen highly skilled staff have
already begun expanding Get Cycling’s events and programmes work in
York. We have also just launched a bike hire service with over 100 cycles
and our newly founded College of Cycling offers classes and courses at
all levels. Once we are a CBS we will invest further in these developments,
while boosting our established activities.
Further plans include a bike recycling facility employing people with
barriers to employment, minibus-assisted rides for people of all abilities
with cycles provided, and unique disability cycling holidays which we
have already pioneered.

Events & Activities
Our unique events are designed to
get people cycling. These include
our try-out roadshows, supported
group rides, pedal-powered arcade
games, bike doctors, workplace
seminars, school activity days
and weddings.
Programmes
We encourage cycling
culture through our bike loan
schemes, senior cyclists’ rides,
tuition in riding skills and cycle
maintenance courses through
our College of Cycling. We
plan to launch a new cycle
recycling centre in York.
Retail Services
Our cycle shop in Fulford, York, has
all kinds of bikes for all kinds of
people, making cycling inclusive
for everyone. We also repair,
service and refurbish bikes. Plus
we have over 100 cycles in our
Bike Hire service which launched
earlier this year.

Why a Community Benefit Society?
Becoming a Community Benefit Society will give Get Cycling genuine
community ownership combining a strong volunteer base and experienced
professional management. All of our current staff will transfer and we
will remain a trading charity. Get Cycling CBS will have a strong board of
unpaid trustees with financial and social enterprise backgrounds. With your
investment we will be able to invest in a carefully managed development
programme backed up by working capital which will increase social impact
and trading income.
We are not handing over a small organisation: Get Cycling had sales of
£919K in 2018. Part of the process means that the current Get Cycling CiC will
close and the community share offer is to partly finance the purchase of
the existing assets for the new organisation Get Cycling CBS (company law
does not permit here a ‘free transfer’). Both organisations are asset-locked
social enterprises: nobody obtains any financial benefit from the transfer.
The rest of the investment will provide working capital for the expansion of
our initiatives. We will create a new website for the organisation which will
make all of our services easy to access for everyone. All aspects of the CBS
will be fully described in the business plan and offer document which will be
available soon on the CBS launch website: getyorkcycling.org.uk.
Become a Member
This charity will become a dynamic cycling support community for
all York cyclists and citizens, working alongside other local cycling
organisations. But Get Cycling CBS will also support its own members,
with exclusive discounts on almost all services and in our bike shop.
There will also be members-only rides, residential cycling weekends and
social events, plus an advice line and monthly newsletter. The full benefits
package is still under development and will be released before we launch
the membership investment offer on September 1st.
On top of all that (if you are a taxpayer) the government returns 30% of
your investment as social investment tax relief, and we also expect to
be offering 4% annual return on investment. The crowdfunding platform
for this offer opens on the 1st September 2019 and closes a month later
or when the target is reached, whichever is sooner. The minimum
investment is likely to be £350.
