2018 ANNUAL REPORT
COMMUNITY GLOBAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dear Friends of the Chapelwood Foundation:
We wish to express our profound gratitude for this
congregation’s continued support of the Foundation. Your
generosity makes it possible to provide countless blessings to
those in need, both in our immediate community and in the
world beyond. It is with great pleasure that we present our 2018
Annual Report on behalf of the Chapelwood United Methodist
Church Foundation.
The theme of this year’s report is “Making Your Mark.” Each
of us leaves a legacy for our family, church and community.
We desire to make an indelible mark on those around us that
shows the impact Christ has on our hearts and lives. Likewise, Chapelwood is committed to leaving a
fruitful legacy. The Chapelwood Foundation is an endowment that supports our church’s larger mission of
preaching the good news and sharing God’s unconditional love by being the hands and feet of Christ to the
underserved.
In 2018, the Foundation was pleased to award $350,000 in charitable grants. These awards included college
scholarships to local youth from low income families, many of whom were the first in their families to
attend college. These students are now graduating with amazing opportunities that will benefit not only
themselves, but their families and communities as well. Grants to local charitable ministries and international
organizations met critical needs for all ages including food, housing, medical care, jobs, education and
emergency assistance. The impact of these grants on individual lives is indescribable, and serves to affirm the
Foundation’s commitment to reach out to the world, one life at a time. We invite you to review some of these
stories in the following pages.
Thank you for being a part of what God is doing through the Chapelwood Foundation. We pray that you will
continue to include the Foundation in your plans for the future, so that Christ’s light and love will continue
to shine brightly in our midst.
In His Service,
Amazing Place
There are currently more than 5 million people living with agerelated
dementia in the United States. As the number of the older
adult population increases, these numbers are expected to rise. For
more than 23 years, Amazing Place has been dedicated to improving
the lives of those affected by dementia, and empowering them to live
fully despite their diagnosis.
Amazing Place has a remarkable vision of ending the stigma of
dementia and changing the way people think about this disease. As
explained by their Executive Director, “We’re not coping. We’re
connecting. We’re not just talking about memory loss. We’re facing
it head on. We’re implementing programs encouraging active and
independent lifestyles. We’re training and educating caregivers,
congregations, health professionals and the community to equip
them with essential knowledge and tools. We’re building meaningful
relationships daily with those living with dementia and everyone in
their lives who are touched by its affects.”
happier and looks forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays. He is happy
to have a place where he can go and not be judged for what he is
going through or what he can’t remember. It’s a place where he can
be the life of the party again! He is so proud when he brings home
his crafts for the family because he’s always had a passion for art.
Without Amazing Place, no doubt, he would be lost. It’s a place that
he loves and I feel safe knowing that he is there. Thank you for being
a blessing to our family.”
In 2018, Amazing Place served more than 1316 individuals through
its onsite Day Program and 3,126 through its educational and
support programs. Chapelwood UMC has been privileged to
partner with Amazing Place as a Sponsor Church for the past 13
years.
Since the cost of the Day Program makes it prohibitive for some
families to afford, Amazing Place offers scholarships for those
with financial hardships. The grant provided by the Chapelwood
Foundation helps them provide financial assistance so that families
may receive a much needed break while their loved ones receive a
wonderful day of stimulation and relationship.
Martha’s husband is one of those scholarship recipients. In her
words, “My husband is a quiet person overall and is genuine. He
has always been willing to help others in need of help. He was and
still is a devoted husband and father to his children. We have been
members of Windsor Village UMC for over thirty years and we have
raised our children to live their lives as Christians. My husband’s
life was full of family, friends and many activities. His life began to
change with his diagnosis. He slowly began to slip into a depressive
and sad state and experienced fear. All of that changed on Thursday,
October 1, 2015, which was his first day at Amazing Place! He was
so excited when I picked him up the first day! He immediately
told me that he loved the place and the people. For the first time in
months, I was given a glimpse of the vital man I married 25 years
ago. I have seen a tremendous change in my husband. He is much
Houston: reVision
There are countless heartbreaking stories of
youth in Houston whose life circumstances
leave them with few options and little hope.
These troubled teens often find themselves in
alternative schools, embroiled in the criminal
justice system, in revolving foster care, and
in some cases, descend into homelessness.
Houston: reVision is changing the trajectory for
these youth on the edge by connecting them
with mentors, positive peers, and life-changing
resources. Houston: reVision currently serves
more than 1,100 youth each year with the help
of more than 400 volunteers. Mentors build a
caring, consistent, relationship with a youth while
they are detained, on probation, or involved with
a school-based program. The Houston: reVision
mentors provide encouragement, support, and
positive role-modeling. These mentors have a
willingness to be a “someone” and a lifeline to a
youth who has really no one on which to depend.
One of these special volunteer mentors
is Chapelwood member, Helen Crowe.
Helen was matched with a 16 year old girl
that had been a victim of human trafficking
who had various legal issues that placed
her in the juvenile justice system.
Helen shared her journey with her mentee,
“She was quiet, extremely polite, inquisitive,
and laughed often as we got to know each
other during our visits. She continues to
make progress towards a better future. “Annie”
is now 18 and graduated from high school
in just 3 years. She is attending her second
semester as a full-time student at Houston
Community College, while living at DePelchin
Children’s Center in their young adult group
home. Recently, Annie accepted a position
as a youth advocate and is employed by the
Harris County Youth Collaborative. She is
working for change to improve opportunities
for others that have struggled with growing
up in the juvenile justice system. She is
committed to serving others and determined
to see her dreams come true. She inspires me
to remain positive and hopeful in our future.”
FAM Houston
Dreaming With God.
Deeply Listening
With Neighbor.
Reverend Hannah Terry is the Founding
Executive Director of FAM Houston. Her
vision has always been, “building community
through loving your neighbor.” Expounding
on that vision, she explains, “At some point
in our lives, we’ve all felt like outsiders.
Maybe you’ve relocated to the city and
it doesn’t feel like home. Maybe you feel
excluded and forgotten among your peers,
like you’ll never truly belong. As we relive
these experiences, we can begin to imagine
more of what it must be like for refugees and
immigrants and to relate to the disorientation
and homesickness they experience.”
At its core, FAM Houston believes it takes
insiders and outsiders befriending one another
to live into God’s beloved community.
FAM Houston provides many impactful
programs and resources to provide hospitality
and community to refugees and immigrants
in Southwest Houston. The Chapelwood
Foundation awarded FAM Houston a grant in
2018 to develop a new women’s empowerment
group. This group provides a safe space for
Swahili-speaking refugee women to find
community, build their support network, and
grow in confidence as they learn to access
resources and navigate life in Houston. Within
the first eight weeks, 27 women attended the
program, which is a collaboration with HISD
and St. Luke’s UMC Gethsemane campus.
White Rainbow Project
In the culture of India, many widows are
considered to be unlucky or unworthy and
are therefore marginalized by a variety of
demoralizing customs. Widows are often
stripped of colorful clothing, and they may
be forced to shave their heads and give up all
adornments. Widows are often abandoned and
shunned by their families as the belief is that the
woman’s “bad karma” caused the death of her
husband and as a widow she is an unwanted,
added financial burden.
Because of this poor treatment, many widows
either flock to or are abandoned in the ancient
holy cities of Vrindavan and Varanasi, where they
are told that Lord Krishna will take care of them.
Vrindavan has become known as the “City of
Widows”. Once there, the unfortunate widows
are often exploited by the town, which makes
large profits from the various activities associated
with it being a place of pilgrimage, as thousands of
people come to worship daily in the 4000 temples
within the city. Widows can survive by chanting
and begging for up to 8 hours a day. Their lives
revolve around chanting, seeking shelter, and
waiting to die, all the while praying that their
next life will be better. Most of these widows are
forced to beg for scraps of food and to survive on
the streets. Many are robbed of their pensions,
sexually exploited and physically brutalized.
White Rainbow Project is working to change the
future of widowhood in India by empowering
and employing widows and at-risk women. They
provide a safe place for them to live and become
independent. The women learn a new skill set
and receive a sustainable income. They also
receive food, medical, and emotional assistance.
The woman learn to design, create and sell
beautiful handmade products. They take lovely
donated Indian sarees and locally sourced or
recycled goods and lovingly craft them into tunic
tops, scarves, gift bags and unique jewelry. These
items are then sold to help raise funds to support
the widows in the program.
Gora is a widow who has been loved and cared
for by the White Rainbow Project. She is 70 years
old and was widowed 15 years ago. After her
husband’s death, the government seized all the
property and land her husband had owned and
she was forced to come to the City of Widows,
as her three sons would not have anything to
do with her. Gora spent the last 10 years in
Vrindavan living in a crowded shelter. She is
now working with White Rainbow Project and
thriving. Her days now have a purpose and she is
provided with a safe, loving environment.
The Chapelwood Foundation is blessed to
partner with this amazing organization as they
are changing the stigma and creating a future
for widows in India. The 2018 grant awarded to
White Rainbow Project provided four months
of food provisions to 250 extremely needy, rural
widows in South India. Each widow receives a
month’s provision of rice, lentils, sugar, vitamins,
and other essentials, which also help her establish
worth and value in her rural village community.
The widows are honored monthly at a ministry
gathering and are empowered through social
speakers, cultural celebrations, and prayer.
Starfish Kenya
Starfish Kenya is dedicated to making the words “Jesus loves
me, this I know” a reality by providing care for children in
Kenya who have been devastated by poverty and suffered the
multiple effects of AIDS. The Foundation awarded Starfish
Kenya a grant in 2018 that helped to complete construction
of the last phase of their Kindergarten building project at St.
Anna Care Centre. Most of the students at St. Anna Care
Centre are orphans who have lost their parents and are living
with a relative too poor to support them and their educational
expenses. The work of Starfish Kenya allows these students
to finish their education, reach their God-given potential and
then bless others living in their community.
One special Starfish student is Kelvin Mwangi. Kelvin is a
seventh grader at St. Anna Care Center and an outstanding
student:
“Life was unbearable before I came to St. Anna in 2013. I was
miserable and could not see anything good coming out of
my life. I was attending a public school, and many times my
guardian was not able to pay the money I needed for the food
program and other activities. I was sent home frequently for
lack of money to participate. Luckily, my grandfather was able
to talk with Bishop Mahiani and explain his struggle to him.
They agreed I should be enrolled at St. Anna.
I would like to become an electrical engineer when I grow up.
I use my leisure time to make electric bulbs using old batteries,
and they produce light in my small room at our home where
I live with my grandmother and grandfather in our village. I
want to work with big machines when I am fully qualified after
my schooling.
I want to achieve my dream and then help someone else in
need. At St. Anna, we have an opportunity to learn the word
of God. Every day, in the morning, we have a session to
praise God and pray for Him to protect us during the day. I
am thankful to St. Anna and Starfish Kenya for loving and
supporting me.”
Scholarship Spotlight
Homero Perez Flores
Since its inception in 2005, the Chapelwood
Foundation Scholarship Program has
awarded more than $1,000,000 in college
scholarships to approximately 200 student
scholars providing them with much needed
assistance to reach their higher education
goals. Foundation scholarships are offered
for the entire college experience and are
renewable each semester if the student
maintains a 2.5 GPA and participates in a
community service project.
All students in the Foundation’s Scholarship
Program have a connection to either a
Chapelwood member or a Chapelwood
ministry. The majority of the students in the
program come from the Collegiate Challenge
Program at Northbrook HS in Spring Branch
ISD. In this program, mentors are assigned to
students and help them navigate the college
admissions and scholarship application
process. Criteria for student applicants
includes stellar academic achievement as
well as a corresponding high level of financial
need.
The students in the Foundation’s Scholarship
Program are hard-working, motivated,
courageous students that daily take the
difficult steps to move beyond the limitations
imposed by poverty and life circumstances.
They are changing the world for themselves
individually, as well as for their families.
Many of our student scholars are the first in
their family to attend college.
Homero Perez Flores is a past scholarship
recipient who recently graduated from
the University of Houston and is now
studying at their College of Optometry. He
recently discussed his educational journey
at the Foundation’s “Path With a Purpose”
Scholarship Luncheon.
“I grew up in a community where education
was not always prioritized. Thankfully,
through mentors, I realized the fundamentals
that derive from education. I always wanted
to enter a profession that enabled me to
contribute to the wellbeing of my community,
which is why I felt drawn to Optometry.
I am the oldest son of a single mother and
have two brothers and three sisters. I grew
up in Spring Branch and graduated from
Northbrook High School. After graduating
from high school, I wanted to play soccer
for a small college in Kansas. Due to limited
resources, I was not able to attend. I enrolled
in a community college for the first two years
and researched the field of optometry. The
College of Optometry at UH was my primary
goal and from there I began preparing
and working on all the requirements for
applicants.
The journey of preparation was tough, but
with the support of my family, mentors, and
the Chapelwood Foundation, I was able to
complete the first big challenge, completing
my undergraduate studies and acceptance
into UHCO.
I have two major plans after completing
Optometry School. Currently, I am
considering applying and working as an
Optometrist for one of the branches of the
military. Ultimately, I want to establish a
practice in Spring Branch so that I may help
my community.
If I could describe the impact the
Chapelwood Foundation has had on my
education in one word, it would be ‘a
blessing.’ Personally, having the support of
such a great Foundation motivated me to go
out every day and take care of business.”
What Can I Do to Make a Difference?
The Chapelwood United Methodist Church Foundation provides for the
future of this congregation’s mission to bring Christ and His love to our local
and global communities. The decision to contribute to the Foundation is a
spiritual commitment of loyalty and love. It is a way to continue giving in
support of our church now and into the future. The Foundation’s bylaws
provide for an annual distribution of up to 5% of the endowment fund to
selected ministries, missions and needs of the Church.
Contributions may be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of
special occasions such as weddings or anniversaries; the birth, baptism or
confirmation of a child; a friend’s birthday; a special thank you to a Sunday
School teacher; or get well wishes for a neighbor. We will send the designated
person or family a note informing them of your thoughtfulness.
When making a donation, there are a number of fund categories to consider:
• Unrestricted Funds
• Restricted for Scholarships
• Restricted for Community Outreach
• Restricted for Global Outreach
• Restricted for Music – Ray Evans Fund
Gifts to the Foundation are permanent, endowed gifts. Frequently they are
made out of current assets or at death, and are most often emotional gifts.
They represent a donor’s passions. Often donors recall a personal, significant,
life event that involved Chapelwood. The Foundation now offers a more
streamlined method of online donation via credit card or bank drafts. In
addition, if you are considering a planned or estate gift, the Foundation office
will be glad to help you develop a planned gift to meet your life circumstances
with the assistance of your financial advisors.
So consider what you feel passionate about. Ask God, “What do you want me
to do?” Not only will our community be enriched, your life will be too. For
additional information about the Foundation, or if you would like to begin an
initial discussion about the advantages of including the Foundation in your
estate planning, please contact Teresa Cannon at the Foundation Office,
(713) 354-4485 or tcannon@chapelwood.org.
The Chapelwood Foundation is
something extraordinary! Many
churches have foundations. Many
of those foundations do great work
for the Kingdom. But there are
not many foundations that use all
their giving to go toward missions
in quite the way Chapelwood does.
The Chapelwood Foundation
invests into the lives of young
people, global missions, and
community outreach. Support
of the Chapelwood Foundation
literally changes our community
and the world in which we live.
My wife Stephanie and I personally
support the Chapelwood
Foundation. I meet with the
students and agencies we support.
It is something special to behold!
You can be sure that an investment
in the Chapelwood Foundation is
an investment in real lives and that
it is making a profound difference.
All inquiries remain confidential.
The Foundation accepts and uses funds in its designated categories, but may ultimately use the funds for a different priority, consistent with its
bylaws, to provide funds “for distribution to, or for the benefit of, Chapelwood Methodist,” upon the request of Chapelwood.
20 LEGACY CIRCLE

An Invitation to Leave Your Own Legacy
The Chapelwood Foundation’s Legacy Circle was established in 2005 as a way to say “thank you” in advance to Chapelwood members who
have planned future gift commitments through their estates. Many dear friends of Chapelwood have made plans to support future ministries
through their bequests and other planned gifts. The members of the Foundation’s Legacy Circle leave an imprint of love that will enable
Chapelwood to continue to be salt and light in our community and around the world. We invite you to join the Legacy Circle and continue the
tradition of Chapelwood United Methodist Church of helping our neighbors both near and far today and for future generations. John Wesley
said, “I value all things only by the price they shall gain in eternity.”
Flame Alive Fellowship
The Chapelwood Foundation would like to thank our Flame Alive
Fellowship members for their faithful support.
Flame Alive Fellowship memberships help reduce overhead costs
and expenses, which directly increases the amount given to charitable
ministries. Each Flame Alive Fellowship enrollment provides the
Foundation with additional funds to support significant projects that
bring Christ and His love to our local and global communities. Your
support is essential so that Chapelwood can continue to be salt and light
in our world now and for generations to come.
We hope that you will consider supporting the Foundation through
your new or renewal membership in the Flame Alive Fellowship. Again,
we thank you for your past support, and hope you will partner with the
Foundation to continue changing lives and transforming communities
through Christ’s love and grace.
