2019 ANNUAL REPORT
GLOBAL COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Dear Friends of the Chapelwood Foundation,
We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude for the congregation’s continued support of the Chapelwood
Foundation. Your generous gifts have allowed the Foundation to make a significant impact on the lives of
people both in our immediate community and in the world beyond our doors. The Chapelwood United
Methodist Church Foundation is pleased to present our 2019 Summary Report.
This year’s theme is “The Song in You.” Psalm 40:3 says, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise
to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.” We pray our song will be heard in our
families, our community and the larger world. The Foundation is spreading our song around the world
and impacting future generations. Lives are changed, people are lifted out of poverty, restored to health
and able to see the wonderful plan God has for their lives.
In 2019, the Foundation was able to distribute $380,000 in scholarships and charitable grants both locally
and globally. We awarded $160,000 in scholarships to 74 deserving students primarily from Spring
Branch. Many of these students are the first in their family to attend college. Community grants in the
amount of $110,000 were awarded to 41 different organizations which provide education, housing, senior
adult ministries, mental health services, abuse prevention, legal services for refugees, prison ministry,
and fighting human trafficking. Your song is heard locally. Global grants of $110,000 were awarded to 30
international organizations providing clean water, farming assistance, education, libraries, wheelchairs,
healthcare, housing, and legal services to vulnerable populations in 16 different countries. The recipients
of these services have heard your song around the world. Please review the following stories to hear how
Chapelwood’s song is impacting our brothers and sisters now and for future generations.
We thank you for sharing your song through the Chapelwood Foundation. We pray that you will continue
to support the Foundation now and in the future so the whole world can trust in God and sing His praises.
Orphan Outreach
Who comes to mind when you think
of the word orphan? Where do you
envision that orphan? What country
pops in your head when you hear
that word? Can you picture one?
Orphan Outreach, founded in 2007, can
answer all those questions and many
more. Their mission is to glorify the Lord
Jesus Christ by meeting the spiritual,
physical, emotional and educational
needs of orphaned and vulnerable
children around the world. Their vision
is to shine brightest where the world is
darkest. So, what are the answers to the
questions above? Keep reading…
Who comes to mind when you think
of the word orphan?
It could be one of the millions of children
who face unimaginable daily hardships
that go unnoticed by so many people in
this world. Orphan Outreach says that
an orphan is often a victim of extreme
poverty, malnutrition, violence, physical
and psychological trauma, sexual abuse,
trafficking and impaired development.
Where do you envision that orphan?
According to Orphan Outreach, they
could be living on the street, living
in an institution because of disability
or poverty, staying in a hospital for
an extended period of time due to
health status (e.g. HIV), detained in an
educational/remand/correctional/penal
facility as a result of an administrative or
judicial decision, or living with abductors.
What country pops in your head
when you hear that word?
The answer is that they are probably in
every country. Orphan Outreach tirelessly
works to restore hope to orphaned
children in Guatemala, Honduras, India,
Nepal, Kenya, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine and
the United States.
Can you picture one?
Our own Chapelwood member, Julie
Treadwell, can definitely picture one. She
stated that “The girls got to see a world
they had no idea existed outside their
Memorial bubble. We all carried the faces
and stories of these children in our hearts
and continued to ponder their situation
and wondered what more we could do.”
Shortly thereafter, Julie and eight women
formed WOW Houston, an auxiliary of
Orphan Outreach, to serve these orphans
and vulnerable children. Also, in order
to keep the kids involved they formed
Jr Wow. WOW stands for Women for
Orphans Worldwide. Julie has since been
back to Guatemala twice and is looking
forward to going again.
The Chapelwood Foundation specifically
supports Orphan Outreach’s Community
Outreach Center in Chimaltenango,
Guatemala. The Community Outreach
Center is a Christian community-based
program serving 345 orphaned and
vulnerable children and their families,
many of which work in the local dump
called the Ravine. This center provides
after-school tutoring and mentoring,
along with psychological care for
approximately 60 children aged 5-18. The
Foundation’s funding helps provide these
children with a nutritious hot meal during
the 42-week school year. This meal
provides food security which in turn leads
to overall good health and development
and success in school.
The inspiration of Orphan Outreach’s
mission and the motivation and passion
towards attaining their vision is James
1:27. “Religion that God our Father accepts
as pure and faultless is this: to look after
orphans and widows in their distress and
to keep oneself from being polluted by the
world.” The Chapelwood Foundation is
blessed to have Orphan Outreach as one
of their Global Grant recipients!
Plant With Purpose
“The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees
bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.”
Genesis 1:12 (NIV)
Plant With Purpose, a Christian nonprofit, also sees the goodness in vegetation
and utilizes it in their efforts to combat two of the world’s most critical issues: extreme
poverty and deforestation. “85% of people in extreme poverty are rural farming families.
Deforestation leaves these families even more vulnerable.” Plant With Purpose’s mission is
to reverse deforestation and poverty around the world by transforming the lives of the rural
poor. They accomplish this through environmental restoration, economic empowerment
and spiritual renewal.
As part of the environmental restoration component, Sustainable Development
Groups learn about a variety of environmental and agricultural topics which teach them that
caring for the environment builds resilience, increases crop yields, creates flourishing family
farms and revitalizes their community. Velouse from Haiti states, “I know how to protect my
land against the erosion and I use compost on my farm as natural fertilizer.” In fact, Plant With
Purpose families have 44% higher crop yields.
As part of the economic empowerment component, the key platform is the Village
Savings and Loan Association (VSLA). VSLA provides financial tools that enable families to
save profits from their farms and invest in their dreams. Plant With Purpose strengthens this
component with additional teaching on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, empowerment
and generosity. Gloria from the Dominican Republic says, “…my income and quality of life
have greatly improved.” In fact, Plant with Purpose families have twice the amount of savings.
As part of the spiritual renewal component, Plant With Purpose equips the local
church to spread God’s love to the farming families. This in turn helps them discover they
have agency, purpose and hope. Eleuterio from Mexico states, “I have peace. I have goals for
my life. I feel like I am doing what God wants me to do. I am helping God’s children and land.
God is our creator and our motivation…” In fact, Plant With Purpose families are 64% more
likely to believe they can improve their lives.
Plant With Purpose has programs led by local teams in Burundi, the Dominican
Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Mexico, Tanzania and
Thailand. The Chapelwood Foundation has specifically provided funds to equip and train
Sustainable Development Groups in Grande Colline, Haiti.
Plant With Purpose works to allow families to restore their relationships with God,
the land and each other. Their holistic program leads to God-given hope and dignity for a
better future. And we all saw that it was good!
Community
The Chapelwood Foundation shares God’s grace by
awarding community grants to local organizations in
Spring Branch and Greater Houston. These gifts help
meet the critical needs of food, housing, medical care,
employment, education, and other essentials.
Agape Development
Agape is the Greek word for love in its truest form – a love
that is authentic, intentional and long-lasting. Agape
Development approaches community development in the
Third Ward of Houston with this type of agape love and
servant leadership. They disciple their neighbors to become
Christ-following and independent community leaders.
Agape Development leads by listening to the community
first as primary stakeholders of their own restoration and
empowers their Old SpanishTrail /South Union neighborhood
for sustainability rather than dependency.
Agape Development assists all members of their community,
from young children to senior adults. Their programs for
children include the Backyard Bible Club, an after-school
program that allows children to have a safe-haven during the
school year to further education and friendships. The Agape
Shaved Ice Program provides neighborhood teens with job
skills and experience. In addition, Agape Development works
hard to help every adult find employment to support a family.
Many neighborhood adults work with Agape’s Property
Repair Team. This team provides high quality and affordable
handyman services to the Greater Houston area. In return,
the workers receive meaningful employment and living
wages.
Joe Gipson is a former member of the Agape Property Repair
Team. Many areas of his life were transformed by his work
with the team:
“Before I came to Agape, life was a struggle. I was drugging,
trying to sell drugs, not doing right at all. We were living day
to day, messing over people, not paying attention to the kids,
living a wild life. I’m a big picture person, the vision I have
for us now: it’s success for the family. I had never seen that
before. Now there’s more structure, my wife is going to Bible
study, and I’m meeting with the pastor and strengthening
our relationship. I was taught the wrong way for so long
and that’s all I knew. I got to work with Dane on a consistent
basis. He prays for me. He asks how my family is doing. I’ve
never had that before and that means a lot to me. They’ve
really helped me to re-arrange my life. I’ve made a complete
360 degree turn. Now I just want to be a spiritual leader,
pushing people toward this type of lifestyle. As far as Agape,
it’s more real than you can imagine. It’s an excellent program
in my eyes and I’ve come a long way. I want to bring other
guys in the neighborhood along and teach them what I’ve
been able to learn. When no one else cared, I felt like I always
had someone else in my corner here at Agape. Right now, I’m
just in a joyful moment. I’m living on time I never thought I
would see.”
Restoring Justice
Restoring Justice was founded in 2016 with the mission to pursue Christ’s justice. They are
one of six Non-Governmental Organizations in the entire country providing trial-level representation
to the poor against criminal accusations and they are the ONLY one in Houston
and Texas. They state that over 70,000 Houstonians, who are too poor to afford legal counsel,
face criminal accusations every year. Furthermore, they cite that 70% of Harris County
inmates are pre-trial detainees, or legally innocent citizens. Restoring Justice believes that
mass incarceration is an epidemic plaguing the most vulnerable parts of our country. Using
the “Good Samaritan” approach, they do everything they can for every individual that they
can, speaking freedom into the lives of the marginalized while enabling them to be contributing
members of their community.
The uniqueness of Restoring Justice lies in their efforts to harness the power of Christ’s community
and love to aid their clients, while navigating the legal system, through holistic legal
and social services. The three areas through which they do this are: legal representation,
social work, and the Adelphoi Program. The Chapelwood Foundation awarded Restoring
Justice a Community Grant specifically for the Adelphoi Program. In Greek, Adelphoi simply
means brother or sister. Adelphoi volunteers are matched with Restoring Justice clients for
an equal, emotionally encouraging relationship throughout the legal process and potentially
beyond. They essentially serve as the supportive role of a real brother or sister.
Here is one Restoring Justice success story:
“Kevin Penny was released in November 2019 after sitting in Harris County Jail for over a year. During
that 12-month span, Kevin’s case had not made any progress. Kevin had not been convicted and rarely
saw his court-appointed attorney. Our Restoring Justice legal team stepped in and were able to get
Kevin time-served and out immediately, after initially being offered 6 years of incarceration.
Kevin asked us to share his story with you. He grew up in a Catholic orphanage in the State of Ohio
where he, unfortunately, experienced abuse. This along with his upbringing has led Kevin to battle with
PTSD, personality disorder and anxiety. His encounters with the justice system have been everything
but compassionate towards his story and his heart. In most cases, he had no access to mental healthcare
or medications. Our team has been able to engage Kevin in his story and work towards refueling
his dignity for the bright, smiling, and humorous man he is. Kevin was able to enter a 90-day program,
where he continued to receive trauma counseling and social work services.
I want you to know that Kevin is full of strength, perseverance and compassionate. Kevin is not his pain;
he is a child of God. May we continue to love this community that sit in the shadows of Downtown
Houston in Harris County Jail.”
Restoring Justice strives to follow Christ’s calling in Luke 4:18 “The spirit of the Lord has
anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor, freedom for the prisoners, sight for the
blind, and to set the oppressed free.” Houston is blessed to have Restoring Justice working
tirelessly to end mass incarceration one client and one heart at a time.
Loving Houston
Since 2013, Loving Houston has
been bringing churches and schools
together with the intention of
bettering children’s lives while
allowing organizations to live their
faith through service to others.
The mission of the organization
is to connect every school in
the greater Houston area with a
committed church partner that will
help the schools meet educational
needs. The organization hosts
workshops throughout the year for
churches and schools, educating
them on how to get connected.
Chapelwood has partnered with
Spring Branch ISD for over 20
years and strongly believes in
the importance of mentoring
and tutoring in the school
system. We have been one of
the leaders that gather for the
quarterly Loving Houston Leader
Luncheon to share ideas and
learn about available resources.
The Chapelwood Foundation
has played a significant role
over the past three years
supporting these workshops and
leader meetings financially.
“As Christians we’ve been called
to love our neighbors,” Marilyn
Lee, Loving Houston Executive
Director said. “How amazing would
that be for communities if our
churches and resources within
our churches were mobilized and
launched into our communities?”
SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship Spotlight
Lus Arellano
The Chapelwood Foundation shares God’s
grace with college students who lack the
financial resources necessary to attend
college through scholarships, mentoring,
and support. Currently, there are more
than sixty students in the Foundation
Scholarship program, and many are the first
in their family to attend college. These high
achieving and highly motivated students
would not be able to attain their dream
of a college education without financial
assistance.
One of our recent graduates, Lus Arellano,
graduated Summa Cum Laude from the
University of Houston. She currently
teaches math at Pilgrim Academy, an HISD
middle school. Many of her students are
recent immigrants to this country. Lus
is having a huge, positive impact on
her students, and was recently named
“Beginning Teacher of the Year” for the
2019-20 school year.
What obstacles did you face growing up?
“The biggest obstacle I faced growing up
was when my dad got very ill. I was in
elementary school when my dad got an
infection that disabled him from working.
He had to be in a recovery center for about
two months. This led to a family financial
crisis because my dad could not work and
my mom did not work at the time. My mom
had to get a job to be able to pay the bills
and provide food for us. Family, teachers,
and our church helped us overcome this
huge challenge in our lives. As we got older
and became more independent, we were
able to get jobs to help support the family.”
Why did you decide to become a teacher?
“When attending middle school, I made
some bad choices that I regretted later.
Thankfully, because of the guidance of my
teachers, I was able to overcome my bad
choices. I wanted to become a teacher
because I always felt the support from them
throughout my education. My two main
teacher influences were from the Math
team at Memorial High School. These two
teachers always looked out for me and gave
me the best advice I could receive. I want
to be THAT kind of teacher that they were to
me in school. I want to follow the example
of my teachers and make an impact on
every child’s life!
More than half of the students at Pilgrim
Academy are at risk of dropping out and
not attending high school. They do not
have the example of their older siblings
attending college or even going on to high
school. I have encouraged my students and
told them that anything is possible. Telling
them my story and how I can relate to them
is giving many of them hope. They have
seen that it is possible that someone can
be in their same situation and still attend
college and have a career.”
What were some of the highs and lows of
attending the University of Houston?
“One struggle that was very hard for
me throughout my years at UH was not
knowing if I was going to be financially
stable. When I transferred to the University
of Houston from Houston Community
College, it was a hard time in my life. I had
recently lost my dad, and we were not in a
stable financial situation at home. There
were days when I did not know if I was
going to have money for gas or food. I was
a full-time student at school during the
week, and on the weekends, I would work
odd jobs to help supplement my mom with
money for the bills. Being the first one
in the family attending a university was a
big deal but it also added a lot of pressure
on me. I knew that I needed to be a role
model for my family and make them all
proud. Having a great deal of support from
friends and family made college a little less
stressful. Not having my father there to
witness me attending college was one of
the hardest things I have gone through. I
know I would have made him proud!
Some high points that I had at UH were the
times I was able to volunteer and give back
to the community. In addition, making
the dean’s list every semester and being
inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Honor
Society were big accomplishments in my
education. Knowing that all my hard work
was paying off made me happy. Graduating
with the highest honors, Summa Cum
Laude, was a HUGE accomplishment. I
know I made family, friends, and my
mentors proud of my achievement. One of
my biggest blessings I have had so far is the
scholarship money from the Chapelwood
Foundation. Without this help, I would not
have been able to finish school.”
We are very proud of Lus and all she has
accomplished! Her students are blessed to
have her as a teacher and role model.
What Can I Do to Make a Difference?
The Chapelwood United Methodist Church Foundation provides for
the future of this congregation’s mission to bring Christ and His love
to our local and global communities. The decision to contribute to the
Foundation is a spiritual commitment of loyalty and love. It is a way to
continue giving in support of our church now and into the future. The
Foundation’s bylaws provide for an annual distribution of up to 5% of
the endowment fund to selected ministries, missions, and needs of the
Church.
Contributions may be given in memory of a loved one or in honor of
special occasions such as weddings or anniversaries; the birth, baptism
or confirmation of a child; a friend’s birthday; a special thank you to
a Sunday School teacher; or get well wishes for a neighbor. We will
send the designated person or family a note informing them of your
thoughtfulness.
When making a donation, there are a number of fund categories to
consider:
• Unrestricted Funds
• Restricted for Scholarships
• Restricted for Community Outreach
• Restricted for Global Outreach
• Restricted for Music – Ray Evans Fund
Gifts to the Foundation are permanent, endowed gifts. Frequently they
are made out of current assets or at death, and are most often emotional
gifts. They represent a donor’s passions. Often donors recall a personal,
significant, life event that involved Chapelwood. The Foundation now
offers a more streamlined method of online donation via credit card or
bank drafts. In addition, if you are considering a planned or estate gift,
the Foundation office will be glad to help you develop a planned gift
to meet your life circumstances with the assistance of your financial
advisors.
So consider what you feel passionate about. Ask God, “What do you want
me to do?” Not only will our community be enriched, your life will be
too. For additional information about the Foundation, or if you would
like to begin an initial discussion about the advantages of including the
Foundation in your estate planning, please contact Rev. Andy Noel at the
Foundation Office, (713) 354-4485 or anoel@chapelwood.org.
When we began 2020, we were
excited about the ways God was
opening the door to expand the
influence of our Chapelwood
Foundation. Due to the Global
Pandemic, our plans were put on
hold temporarily, but I want you to be
aware of the vision God is giving us.
You may already be aware of how
The Chapelwood Foundation invests
into the lives of young people, global
missions, and community outreach
mission. This annual support literally
changes our community and the
world in which we live.
You can be sure that an investment
in the Chapelwood Foundation is an
investment in real lives and that it is
making a profound difference. I am
excited about our future together.
funds “for distribution to, or for the benefit of, Chapelwood Methodist,” upon the request of Chapelwood.
20 LEGACY CIRCLE

An Invitation to Leave Your Own Legacy
The Chapelwood Foundation’s Legacy Circle was established in 2005 as a way to say “thank you” in advance to
Chapelwood members who have planned future gift commitments through their estates. Many dear friends
of Chapelwood have made plans to support future ministries through their bequests and other planned gifts.
The members of the Foundation’s Legacy Circle leave an imprint of love that will enable Chapelwood to continue
to be salt and light in our community and around the world. We invite you to join the Legacy Circle and
continue the tradition of Chapelwood United Methodist Church of helping our neighbors both near and far
today and for future generations.
John Wesley said, “I value all things only by the price they shall gain in eternity.”
Flame Alive Fellowship
The Chapelwood Foundation would like to thank our Flame Alive
Fellowship members for their faithful support.
Flame Alive Fellowship memberships help reduce overhead costs
and expenses, which directly increases the amount given to charitable
ministries. Each Flame Alive Fellowship enrollment provides the
Foundation with additional funds to support significant projects that
bring Christ and His love to our local and global communities. Your
support is essential so that Chapelwood can continue to be salt and light
in our world now and for generations to come.
We hope that you will consider supporting the Foundation through
your new or renewal membership in the Flame Alive Fellowship. Again,
we thank you for your past support, and hope you will partner with the
Foundation to continue changing lives and transforming communities
through Christ’s love and grace.
