Orphan Outreach Who comes to mind when you think of the word orphan? Where do you envision that orphan? What country pops in your head when you hear that word? Can you picture one? Orphan Outreach, founded in 2007, can answer all those questions and many more. Their mission is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by meeting the spiritual, physical, emotional and educational needs of orphaned and vulnerable children around the world. Their vision is to shine brightest where the world is darkest. So, what are the answers to the questions above? Keep reading… Who comes to mind when you think of the word orphan? It could be one of the millions of children who face unimaginable daily hardships that go unnoticed by so many people in this world. Orphan Outreach says that an orphan is often a victim of extreme poverty, malnutrition, violence, physical and psychological trauma, sexual abuse, trafficking and impaired development. Where do you envision that orphan? According to Orphan Outreach, they could be living on the street, living in an institution because of disability or poverty, staying in a hospital for an extended period of time due to health status (e.g. HIV), detained in an educational/remand/correctional/penal facility as a result of an administrative or judicial decision, or living with abductors. What country pops in your head when you hear that word? The answer is that they are probably in every country. Orphan Outreach tirelessly works to restore hope to orphaned children in Guatemala, Honduras, India, Nepal, Kenya, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine and the United States. Can you picture one? Our own Chapelwood member, Julie Treadwell, can definitely picture one. She stated that “The girls got to see a world they had no idea existed outside their Memorial bubble. We all carried the faces and stories of these children in our hearts and continued to ponder their situation and wondered what more we could do.” Shortly thereafter, Julie and eight women formed WOW Houston, an auxiliary of Orphan Outreach, to serve these orphans and vulnerable children. Also, in order to keep the kids involved they formed Jr Wow. WOW stands for Women for Orphans Worldwide. Julie has since been back to Guatemala twice and is looking forward to going again. The Chapelwood Foundation specifically supports Orphan Outreach’s Community Outreach Center in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. The Community Outreach Center is a Christian community-based program serving 345 orphaned and vulnerable children and their families, many of which work in the local dump called the Ravine. This center provides after-school tutoring and mentoring, along with psychological care for approximately 60 children aged 5-18. The Foundation’s funding helps provide these children with a nutritious hot meal during the 42-week school year. This meal provides food security which in turn leads to overall good health and development and success in school. The inspiration of Orphan Outreach’s mission and the motivation and passion towards attaining their vision is James 1:27. “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” The Chapelwood Foundation is blessed to have Orphan Outreach as one of their Global Grant recipients!
