Sponsored by the Wilmette Park District, the event was held on the beach and featured family friendly entertainment. Campers roasted marshmallows around the campfire as the sun set. At sunrise, they enjoyed cereal, juice and coffee. Once there, folks are pleasantly surprised to find that nestled into the office buildings between Willow and Tower Roads, exists Sweet Time Cafe — a cozy, colorful bakery specializing in homemade sweets and special lunch options, too. The shop is owned by Wilmette’s Sari Smith and her sister, Jane Zimbler, also a Wilmette native who now resides in Skokie. These two New Trier graduates have been thick as thieves since their youth. The sisters have a long history of working and playing together. Years ago, they combined their business skills, creating an employment agency called Temp Time. After many ups and downs and the tough financial times in 2008 and 2009, they decided to pursue their passion for food and baking, a love instilled in them by their father. “Our dad was the greatest foodie. We lived in Wilmette, but he commuted weekly to New York, always telling us about the fabulous food. For him, hopping on a plane was no different than one of us jumping in a cab,” Zimbler said. “One day, he took us to New York, just to get donuts at the original Krispy Kreme. His love for food, sparked our love for baking; carrying on this tradition at Sweet Time is very special to us.” A luck would have it, fate intervened. Zimbler found the office space at their current 570 Frontage Road location, knowing instinctively that it was the perfect space to establish a commercial kitchen and get down to the business of baking their specialties. “I wouldn’t describe our baking as fancy, but as home-baked goodness,” Zimbler said. “We specialize in chocolate chip banana bread, toffee and brownies. We make things easy to be eaten in one bite or on the go.” Although the sisters stick to the things they love to make most, they have enlisted the expertise of chef, Tonya Deiotte, who formerly owned a patisserie shop in Chesterton, Indiana. With Deiotte’s help, Sweet Time can also provide for special events like weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, showers and more. Deiotte is also responsible for expanding the menu to include salads, sandwiches, soups and more. Ben Anstett, of Elgin, works in the offices upstairs from Sweet Time. He said that when it comes to lunch, he heads to Sweet Time for two reasons. “I love their Cobb salad — it’s the best, it’s healthy and a great light lunch,” Anstett said. “Better yet, is the welcoming feel I get every time I come in. It’s like being served by family.” Along with making their walkin customers feel valued, the sisters make sure that anyone who enlists their services receives that same personalized feel. “We deliver lunch within a three-mile radius. If you need a cake delivered for a special event outside of our regular business hours, we will bring it to you,” Smith said. “Baking for special occasions is one of our biggest passions. We know that those special events are so meaningful to the folks who host them, so we make it our mission to provide the quality of product and service that you can’t easily find elsewhere.” In addition, the sisters are always thinking of new ways to keep it fresh.
