VOLUNTEERING MAKES A DIFFERENCE 

As president of the MPMCA, I just want to take a moment and 

thank everyone for your dedication and continued support of the 

MPMCA and its local chapters. This industry and those around us 

would be much worse off if it weren’t for the countless hours spent 

by volunteers donating their time and resources. 

I would like to thank all of you that volunteer your time and 

resources to help make this a wonderful organization; without 

you none of this would be possible. I also want to thank those 

that volunteer their time outside of this organization to make your 

communities a better place to live. It is people like you that truly 

make a difference in the people and places around you. As you read 

this magazine and look over all the great things this organization and 

its affiliate members are doing, you should all be very proud of your 

accomplishments. 

As contractors, we usually don’t have much time to spare outside of 

running a business, but I encourage all of you to do what you can 

to help those around you. Whether it’s helping out someone in our 

industry with plumbing or heating, or simply volunteering your 

time for someone in need, we can make a difference. 

There are several ways we can volunteer some of our time and 

resources, but one that may be 

important in our industry is the 

volunteering of time and resources 

to students and/or anyone that 

maybe interested in our trade or 

industry. With the skilled labor 

shortage affecting contractors 

across the country, now is more 

important than ever to get involved 

with your local schools, colleges and 

career centers. We as contractors have the responsibility to get out 

and inform these potential candidates what kind of career is possible 

in our industry. I believe this will be a necessity as we move forward 

and the lack of skilled trades employees becomes more prevalent. 

I encourage all of you to continue your support and help out where 

you can. If you need more information on how to volunteer, contact

Local 174 hosted the Michigan State Pipe Trade Apprenticeship contest May 2-3.Thirty-five apprentices, the most ever, from

BAY AREA ASSOCIATION 

REMEMBERING JERRY JEHNSEN 

The Bay Area Association lost a long-standing member 

on March 4, 2019. 

Jerry Jehnsen, former owner of United Plumbing 

and Heating passed away at the age of 81 after a long 

battle with cancer. Jerry started his career in plumbing 

with an apprenticeship in 1961. In 1984 he started his 

business with partner Robert Horn. 

Jerry served as a representative on several committees 

including as an instructor for the apprenticeship 

program with Local Union 85 teaching foremen 

training classes. 

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Sharon and a son 

Rick. Another son Jerry passed away in 2016.

The 2019 SkillsUSA 

Residential Plumbing 

Contest was conducted 

this year on Saturday, 

April 6, at the Amway 

Grand Plaza Hotel/DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. 

The judges included Jeff Biegalle, Cascade Twp. 

Plumbing Inspector; Brian McKay, City of Grand 

Rapids Plumbing Inspector; Jeff Sevigny, UA Local 

174 Plumbers & Pipefitters; and Sean Sullivan, 

UA Local 174 Plumbers & Pipefitters. The 

Mid-Michigan Mechanical Contractors Association 

(3MCA) and the West Michigan Mechanical 

Contractors Association (WMMCA) co-sponsored 

the event and both Becky Brimley and Jim Baldwin 

were present to assist in the competition.
