Fondazione FS Italiane: an extensive journey
through our country’s railway history
The Foundation comprises historical archives brimming
with illustrations and filmed images, an extensive library,
the National Railway Museum at Pietrarsa, over 200
heritage pieces of rolling stock (railcars, steam engines,
period carriages, electric engines etc.) and 600 kilometers
of once abandoned tracks recouped for cultural tourism.
Fondazione FS Italiane safeguards the written, visual
and technical heritage of Ferrovie dello Stato and those
and videos; a vast historical collection which has been
documented and catalogued and which is undergoing
the lengthy process of being digitalised so an ever-wider
public can be privy to these original sources of our
country’s past. A large portion of this material can already
be accessed through our archive-dedicated website
www.archiviofondazionefs.it and the library catalogue
can be consulted at www.fondazionefs.it.
Aerial view of the National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa complex.
companies that managed the network prior to 1905.
It is a rich source of documents, images and vehicles
depicting the evolution of the network and rolling stock
in Italy from the mid 1800s onwards and offers an
overview of our country’s history.
The Foundation’s headquarters are located in Villa
Patrizi in Rome, as are the larger of its libraries and
historical archives. Books, original drawings of stations,
plants, engines and vehicles which have made Italian
railway history are stored here alongside period films
In addition to the conservation of historical sources,
the Foundation also operates in tourism through its
“Binari Senza Tempo” project: comprising almost 600
Km of track repurposed to encourage a new way of
experiencing tourism, exploring history and landscapes
using a fully ecologically sustainable mode of transport.
Our itineraries include: Palazzolo sull’Oglio-Partico
Sarnico (Ferrovie del Lago), Asciano-Monte Antico
(Ferrovia della Val d’Orcia), Sulmona-Carpinone
(Ferrovia del Parco), Agrigento-Porto Empedocle
