Moreover Fondazione FS manages one of Europe’s
largest historical rolling stock fleets. It includes 302
running vehicles salvaged thanks to an extensive
refurbishment and mechanical restoration program
which counts on 21 separate country-wide sites
dedicated to the secure storage and maintenance of
the heritage rolling stock. Our Pistoia site preserves
and repairs our steam engines, La Spezia looks after
our electric engines while the Squadra Rialzo at Milan
Central houses our heritage carriages including those
which form the Royal-Presidential Train and a number
of 1930s railcars.
Last but not least, the Foundation, among its other
activities, manages the Pietrarsa National Railway
Museum in Naples.
A truly unique exhibition site, its suggestive setting and
vast array of vehicles is unequaled in Europe and is
spread over 36 thousand square meters, 14 thousand
of which are covered. The collections are exhibited
in the original pavilions of the former Borbonic
workshop which specialised in steam engine repairs.
The fully restored and overhauled site has become
one of Southern Italy’s most important museums and
convention centres.
