FROM THE PRINCIPAL
4
HIGH SCHOOL
Term 2 has been a mixture of
emotions and it has proven we
are a very resilient and united
school community.
On one hand, our community
enjoyed and celebrated the
extensive successes of our students
and school, yet on the other hand,
we were saddened by three tragic
and unexpected events. It is at times
like this that the true character and
spirit of a community comes to the
surface, and I must say I am indeed
heartened by the support, courage
and generosity our community
has provided at this difficult time.
But above all, I have been most
impressed by our students who have
demonstrated their strong sense of
values with such maturity, sensitivity
and unconditional support for each
other and their teachers. Please
know that the school will continue
to provide counselling support and
will be working with our students to
organise special tributes to celebrate
the lives of Daniel Jovanovic, our
amazing IT Technician, and our wellloved
student, Thabo Adesodun.
HIGH SCHOOL
Despite these challenges our students
and school have continued to embrace
diverse learning opportunities this term.
These experiences ranged from exciting
Outdoor Education Camps to Pedal Prix and
sporting successes, from outstanding music
performances in the Generations in Jazz
Festival to a well-catered Italian Cultural Lunch;
from a STEM Leadership program with Boeing
mentors to presenting creative entrepreneurial
skills in the Year 10 Shark Tank program, just to
name a few.

HIGH SCHOOL
But perhaps the most spectacular term highlight
was our sensational whole-school Musical
The Sound of Music, which was a triumphant
showcase of talent, dedication and teamwork.
We are incredibly proud of all involved in
this outstanding production and of the highly
professional manner in which the cast and crew
represented our school to the wider community.
On another note I am delighted to announce
that NMHS has been awarded candidacy
status for the International Baccalaureate
Diploma Programme (IBDP). This effectively
means the school is now in a position to work
towards authorisation with the International
Baccalaureate Organisation to offer the IBDP
from 2022. In addition I am pleased to advise
that Swanbury Penglase Architects Pty Ltd have
been appointed architects for our $39.9million
building project. In the coming weeks this
award-winning design team will consult staff,
students and Governing Council members to
identify requirements and create impressive
building plans that will bring our two campuses
together and further enhance our student’s
amazing learning opportunities with innovative
learning spaces. In this spirit of working together,
we will ensure our school community is informed
of any developments along the way.
Clearly Term 3 promises to be another busy and
productive term!
HIGH SCHOOL
Middle Campus News
Term 2 on the Middle Campus has been packed with a usual flurry of events and activities:
from Poetry in Action, to Red Shield Appeal, Italian lunch, Meet the Writers event, Personal
Project showcase, Vinnie’s Winter Appeal, STEM related activities, Shark Tank, very successful
debating rounds, year level and whole campus assemblies and numerous music and sports
events. The term finished with a flag football game between staff and Year 10 students in
honour of our most loved staff member Daniel Jovanovic, whose early departure rocked the
whole school community. The students outplayed staff and took the inaugural shield.
Poetry in Action
6
HIGH SCHOOL
Term 2 started with an energetic performance
by ‘an innovative touring theatre company with
an enduring dedication to unlocking the power
of words.’ Over a hundred Year 8 students who
packed our Resource Centre were treated to a
performance which brought words to life and
ignited new love for poetry. Through a 45-minute
journey through centuries, the young actors
presented a humorous and dynamic perspective
on poetry and literature. Students learnt about
the importance of poetry as a valuable form of
self-expression and were reminded of the many
poetic techniques so very skilfully interwoven
within the presented text.

Pastoral Care News
Our newly appointed Pastoral Care Worker (PCW),
Jeeves Dunn, who joined the NMHS community
at the start of Term 2, has been working hard to
organise two clubs: e-sport and breakfast club,
catering for students whose interests and needs
may be slightly different to other students. He has
managed to engage a large number of students
who meet as a group before and after school and
at break times, talking with them and providing a
space for them to get together and pursue their
interests. Jeeves has also supported both staff and
students through the process of grieving for the
staff member and student whose deaths deeply
affected the whole community.
Red Shield Appeal and Vinnie’s Winter
Appeal
Our annual Red Shield Appeal day was held on
Thursday 6 June with a casual day, a sausage
sizzle and the very popular Sponge the Teacher
activity. Proceeds of the day were donated to
Salvation Army for those in our community who
need their support. It was a fun day which raised
awareness about the people in our midst who are
less fortunate and rely on support from others.
Similarly, Vinnie’s Winter Appeal aims to collect
goods which will be donated to those in our local
community who are in need of our support. The
appeal will continue into Term 3. Students are
encouraged to bring items of non-perishable food,
warm clothes and blankets no longer used by
their family. A big thank you to everyone for their
generosity.
Italian Lunch
Every term MC student leaders, with the support
of their teachers, organise a celebration of one of
five languages and cultures taught at our school.
Term 2 is now traditionally dedicated to celebrating
the Italian language and culture. On Thursday 13
June, student leaders, Year 10 Food and Culture
class, and Italian and Home Economics teachers,
organised a hugely successful Italian lunch with
a wonderful variety of food, both savoury and
sweet, a selection of Italian music and Italy inspired
decorations. This was also a fantastic example of
authentic and purposeful learning as the planning
and the preparation of food was a part of the Year
10 students’ assessment task.
Semester 1 Reports
The end of Term 2 also marks the end of Semester
1 when students received a report on the full range
of criteria across all subjects. Grades are allocated
out of 7, according to the IBO grading system.
Students who received a Grade Point Average
(GPA) of 6.5 or above will receive a certificate
for their achievement as a part of the Term 3
assembly.
We wish all students and their families safe and
relaxing school holidays.
HIGH SCHOOL
Senior Campus News
It is hard to believe that we are already at
the end of Term 2. It has been a busy and
productive term on the Senior Campus
despite the impact of an accident that injured
8 students and a teacher and the sudden
death of a staff member and a student.
While the school and the Department
for Education have provided a range of
counselling support for students and staff, It
is wonderful to see how supportive our staff
and students have been of each other in
trying circumstances. This really does show
our students growth as engaged and caring
citizens.
in and out of the classroom. Students have
been actively engaged in their learning and
are accustomed to the workload required to
be successful in senior schooling. Classroom
learning has continued to build the skills,
knowledge and capabilities students need to
ensure SACE success.
Stage 2 Diagnostic, Stage 1 Semester and
10EX reports have recently been published
for student and parent/caregiver discussion.
All parent/caregivers are encouraged to talk
with their students during the holiday break
about whether students have delivered their
personal best based on their achievement.
This term also saw Norwood Morialta High
School enter the candidacy phase for the
International Baccalaureate Diploma program.
Selected staff will shortly begin training to
support the delivery of specific subject in
this program. We expect to be able to offer
students this alternative program to the SACE
by 2022.
HIGH SCHOOL
8
There have also been many highlights both

This year has also seen some new developments as
Personal Learning Groups have explored ways to
enrich humanity in a variety of ways. One student
group worked with Burnside Council to look at ways
to improve sustainability and resource management
at school, another organised for plastic straws to
be replaced by biodegradable paper straws in the
cafeteria, another focussed on an Energy audit of the
school. Other groups focussed on charity fund raising
for Backpacks for SA kids and encouraging students
to sign up as organ donors. The theme of community
engagement was also evident when the Event
Management class supported by student leaders ran
a “Race it to Raise it” charity event for the Treasure
Boxes charity.
Beyond the community engagement program the
PLG program will once again ask students to reflect
on their achievement and revisit their goals identified
earlier in the year. Students will be asked to consider
and identify strategies that will help to improve their
learning.
Student Voice
There have been numerous events held throughout
the term providing rich opportunities for student voice
on the Senior Campus. Many thanks to Margarita
Paleologos and the Year 12 Formal committee for the
hours of planning that went into this year’s formal. It
was a fun evening for all. A special thank you to the
teachers who attended the formal and assisted with
supervision. The House assembly was held earlier
this term and showcased the work of the House
Student Leaders including their vision about promoting
student voice and connectedness across the campus,
upcoming fundraising events, cultural celebrations and
casual days.
Stage 2 Exams
Return of Ms Kotrotsos
Stage 2 exams will take place in Week 1 of Term
3 from Monday 22 July to Friday 26 July. Students
are expected to use the July holiday period for
revision and study leading up to the examination
period. The exams will provide an excellent trial
before sitting for the final external exams in Term 4.
Students who do not have exams will be expected
to work on assignments and course work during
this week. There will be no Stage 2 classes running
during this week but identified students will be
required to attend school to complete assignment
work. Students are able to study at school and
seek support from their subject teachers. Student
examination results will be published on Friday 9
August.
As a final note, we will be welcoming back Ms Nikki
Kotrosos to her position as Campus Head next term
after her semester with the Secondary Learners
Directorate in the Department for Education.
Ms Karen Andrews will return to her position as
Campus Head on the Middle Campus
HIGH SCHOOL
Mindfulness
This term Senior School students have been invited to attend lunch time mindfulness activities each
Monday. Each week we trial a different way of practicing mindfulness, and are noticing the benefits
including feeling more relaxed, less stressed and overall more positive! Some of the activities have included
mindful chocolate eating, meditation, yoga and mindful colouring. This program will continue in Term 3 and
all students are encouraged to come along and learn a bit about mindfulness.
PIctured above are students having a go at mindful colouring.
House Leaders - Event
Management Committee
Red Shield Day
Term 2 has included some great events from our Event
Management Committee. A big day on our school
calendar and one that Norwood Morialta High School has
enjoyed for many years, is the Red Shield Appeal for the
Salvation Army. The Red Shield Appeal helps the Salvation
Army deliver social services to our local community,
including refuge for families, family welfare assistance,
youth drop-in centres and many other support programs
that our school community was proud to contribute to. Our
students were given the opportunity to dress in red casual
clothes, enjoy a sausage sizzle and most importantly,
throw a sponge at a teacher, all to raise money for an
HIGH SCHOOL
excellent cause. As a school we raised almost $1000
and have set the bar for our event in the future. We look
forward to continuing our work with the Salvation Army
and we thank our school community for their generosity.
Italian Cultural Day
This term, our cultural celebration, included the food,
music and traditions of beautiful Italy. As a school we pride
ourselves on the diversity within our community, and in
respect to this, we chose to celebrate it. It was a big day
for all students, but particularly for the Year 10 Food and
Culture class who planned and prepared all of the food
that was sold on the day. We enjoyed a wide variety of
Italian cuisine including cannoli, lasagne, carbonara, pizza,
bruschetta, cotoletta, caramel budino, tiramisu, meatballs
and bombolini. This task was not only an organisation for
Italian Cultural Day, but it integrated our Food Technologies
curriculum to assess our Year 10 students as part of their
final practical. Our students were completely immersed
in the program, completing some of their best cooking to
date. Their recipes were complex and utilised skills well
beyond their years.
Students from across the school enjoyed an Italian lunch,
listened to traditional music and helped support our House
Leaders in providing a cultural experience for all.
NMHS Big Band Update
The NMHS Big Band have had a big first semester.
Earlier this year we hosted local big band legend
Rob Chenoweth, who ran a workshop with the
band in the lead-up to Generations in Jazz.
Over the April holidays, Adelaide Uni bass lecturer
John Aue shared his wisdom with the band’s
rhythm section.
In Term 2 we were visited by more of the Adelaide
Uni’s jazz faculty: Julian Ferraretto (violin) and
Lazaro Numa (trumpet). The Cuban Music
workshop was offered to
HIGH
us through Nexus Arts
SCHOOL
and we are grateful to them for the offer. Lazaro
is still a touring member of the world’s most
renowned Cuban band, the Afro-Cuban Allstars
and his Cuban heritage was audible in every note
he demonstrated to the band. He taught us a
Cuban Salsa, which we are working on and hope to
share with the school community soon.
The band was fortunate to be able to perform for
the Southern Jazz Club for the first time. We played
the opening set for their regular Tuesday night
booking the (Anzac) Highway Inn in Week 7.
Term 3 is looking equally promising for the band.
In August we are participating in the Essentially
Ellington Festival and in September we will perform
at the Big Band Bash at the Governor Hindmarsh.
NMHS at Generations in Jazz, 2019
2019 was the fifth time NMHS has entered the
Mt Gambier schools Jazz Combo competition
which was attended by more than 5000 of the
best and most talented music students from
around Australia.
Our Big Band was in Division 4, and our Jazz
Combo, led by Hai Dang and James were entered
in Division 1 of the Small Combo comp.
The Big Band played extremely well to finish just
outside the placings in our tent.
Our trombonists, Sam, Trung and Hudson were
commended repeatedly in the adjudicator’s notes.
Accordingly, Hudson was selected as the first
trombone in the Superband (aka All Star team) for
the entirety of Division 4 which comprises more
than 70 bands and more than 200 trombone
players.
Although our Jazz Combo was not as competitive,
the judges’ comments were very positive and
the band deserve high commendation for their
musicality, their dedication and the development
their work has fostered within our school music
community.
The development of the two bands has been
strongly supported by the increased focus on jazz
focussed skills from our instrumental tutors - Aaron
Lipp, Nick Vladcoff, Jed Rillera, Peter Matzick, Aidan
McDonough, John Callisto.
Special thanks to Kimberley O’Brien, who gave up
her weekend to help out.
Public Speaking
Competition
On Tuesday 18 June, the Probus Club of Burnside
High School Public Speaking Competition was held
at the Burnside Town Hall. Oliver represented our
school against speakers from Seymour, St. Peter’s
Girls, Marryatville and Pembroke High Schools.
Oliver presented a prepared speech arguing for
‘Compulsory National Service for Young Australians’,
and an impromptu speech on an unseen topic.
Although St Peter’s Girls won the day, adjudicator
Heather Layton commended all participants for
their passion and speaking
HIGH
skills.
Debating
Our Intermediate B Debating Team celebrated victory after a fantastic first outing against Walford Anglican
School on Tuesday, Week 2. Our team demonstrated that we are more than capable of competing against
high quality opposition with Distinction, Diversity and Respect. We encourage students to get involved with
debating as it inspires them to become an engaged global citizen to meet the challenges of a changing world.
Speak German and Study Science
On Monday 13 May Norwood Morialta High School
hosted the STEM Workshops in German in for 60
students from German STEM Year 8 and Year 9
classes. Students stepped into scientist’s shoes
and conducted research with German speaking
scientists from the University of Adelaide and
University of South Australia.
Working in groups, students explored the work
of three scientists by participating in a series of
workshops to find out ‘What is a zero energy
home?’, ‘Is artificial intelligence set to become next
the great art movement?’ and ‘How can we fight
superbugs?’ The workshops gave students the
opportunity to discover first-hand the real world
applications of research and to practice their
German speaking skills by interacting with German
speaking scientists.
A great thanks to our photographer Subin Wright-
Simone from the Year 9 German class.
STUDENTS’ COMMENTS:
‘I learned how to mutate pixels of picture into
other pictures’.
‘I learned about how AI helps in different
fields, especially in arts’.
‘There are 10 times more bacteria cells than
human cells in our bodies’.
‘I learned about why washing hands was
important, WITH SOAP!!!’
‘l learned that the positioning of the rooms
inside the house is actual very important,
depending on the sun position throughout the
seasons.’
‘That we had to use our time more efficiently.’
Adelaide Central
Market Excursion
As part of the Year 9 Humanities (Geography)
course students have been learning about
Geographies of Interconnections by studying how
people, through their choices and actions, are
interconnected to places throughout the world in a
wide variety of ways, and how these connections
help to make and change places and their
environments.
To further explore the geographical concept of
interconnection students participated in a tour of
the Adelaide Central Market specifically designed
to cover the areas of curriculum which our class
HIGH SCHOOL
needed. The tour was organised by Food Tours
Australia who’s Director and Market stall owner
Mark Gleeson started with addressing some of the
questions to the whole group.
Students were then taken on a guided tour around
the Market and had the opportunity to taste a
delicious selection of foods from South Australian
producers, including the famous Charlesworth Nuts,
Say Cheese, Coco’s Tropical Fruits and Standom
Smallgoods. The most popular tasting was the
Blackeby’s old fashioned boiled sweets and the
most unusual Something Wild’s Indigenous greens
called karkalla.
Students interviewed some of the stallholders
and producers whose families have traded at the
Market for generations, learnt about the history
and evolution of the Market and its importance in
interconnecting different people and places and
building both the social and economic needs of
the community. On conclusion of the tour, students
had time to explore the Market at their own pace
and grab a tasty lunch. For some this meant more
sweets, whilst others were more health conscious
and bought local, dry roasted almonds or fresh fruit.
To conclude the unit, students wrote an information
report that outlined the aspects they investigated
during their tour of the Adelaide Central Market.
STUDENTS’ COMMENTS:
“I liked the shops and how they all had
something to eat.”
- Charlie Carson
“I liked this excursion because it is interesting
and it helped me to learn more about where
some food comes from. I enjoyed tasting
some different foods I haven’t tasted before.”
Shark Tank eSchool
Venture Showcase
On Wednesday 19 June, over 500 students
from across various schools in South Australia
participated in the Shark Tank eSchool Venture
Showcase at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
The showcase was set up with booths. Each group
was responsible for setting up their booth based
on their business ideas. Norwood Morialta was
represented by 10 teams consisting of 29 Year 10
students.
Throughout the day, each group had to pitch their
ideas in 3 minutes to various judges, as well as to
the public. There were major and minor prizes in 5
categories. Each group nominated the category in
which they were to be judged. Those who received
a prize moved to the semi-finals.
We had 2 teams who entered the semi-finals.
These teams received prizes consisting of a $300
voucher for 3D printing at Adelaide University.
‘Royal Jeans’ by Matilda & Lucinda, made it to the
finals in their category for the ‘Santos Award.’ This
meant that the girls had to present their 3 minute
pitch again, this time in the VIP room with Naomi
Simson, as well as a 1 minute pitch on stage to the
rest of the audience.
The girls were nervous, but once they got on stage,
all of the nerves faded. They spoke eloquently,
and the judges were really impressed with their
idea, which led to the girls winning the First Prize.
This consists of a $1000 cash, $5000 worth of
consulting from Moody Crab (marketing agency), a
$100 worth of products from Switched on Kids, and
a signed copy of Naomi Simson’s new book.
All of our students did exceptionally well, speaking
with great confidence and excitement, as they
were truly proud of what they had achieved. All
received positive feedback about their ideas and
presentations.
This program has been an absolute success, not
only because of the final outcome, but because of
the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills that the
students have learnt along the way.
second overall, meaning that for the second year in
a row we move up a division. Next year we will be
competing in the B1 division after competing in B2 this
year and C1 last year. This is a great reward for all the
hard work the group has put in over the past few weeks.
Standards of Excellence certificates are awarded to the
Soccer
On Tuesday 7 May the following Year 8 Boys, and
two Year 10 referees took part in Tuesday’s Outdoor
5-A-Side Carnival at Para Hills High School. We had two
teams on the day, one in Division 1 and one in Division 2.
Both teams played some exceptional soccer even with
some nasty weather coming in half way through the
day.
Our Division 1 team went undefeated on the day
including the Grand Final taking out first place overall.
Our Division 2 team missed out on the top spot by only
1 point finishing third and only losing one game on the
day.
The Year 8 boys showed a lot of determination and grit
especially in the Division 1 team which found themselves
down 1 to nil against Roma Mitchell High School but
fought back to end the game winning 3-1. The Division 1
team also found themselves down by 1 goal with a few
minutes left against Parafield Gardens High School. We
scored late to bring it back to 3-3 before finishing the
game as a draw. The Division 1 boys then went on to
beat Roma Mitchell High School 4-1 in the final.
Special thanks to Pre-Service Teacher Ezrah Holland
who helped out on the day and coached the Division 2
team to third place. All of the boys were very excited to
bring a trophy back to their new school and both teams
were very proud of their team’s accomplishments on
the day. Not a single yellow card or disciplinary action
was taken against any of our players a testament to the
boys exceptional behaviour on the day
During the Term 1 holiday, I attended
a national badminton state tournament
which took place in Adelaide. I represented
for South Australia to be up against other
states such as Western Australia, New
South Wales and more. Unfortunately,
South Australia came 4th out of 7 teams
which was considered a very good job as
we have never came in 4th before. I am
very happy since I was able to play with the
top players within Australia under the age
of 17. This allows me to know my standard
comparing to the rest of the players and
how much I am able to improve before
participating in the next state tournament.
From this tournament, I have gained so
much motivation which I will try to get within
the top 5 in Australia within the age group.
Outdoor Education
Year 12 Outdoor Education:
Rock climbing
Our first expedition was a climbing expedition
to Mt Arapiles in Victoria for 5 days. The group
worked hard to learn how to set up their own top
rope climbing systems and also experienced the
excitement that goes with multi-pitch climbing
with some routes almost 90m in length. Students
collaborated, formed trusting relationships through
belaying and were able to problem-solve as they
picked their line over numerous grade 8 – 22 climbing
routes.
Year 11 Outdoor Education:
Cycle touring and Surfing
Students have had a busy Semester, which included
a 5-day cycling and surfing expedition and a
navigation assessment day.
The two-day cycling phase of the expedition
included two groups cycling with panniers from Mt
Magnificent to Rocky Creek Hut in the Kuitpo Forest.
The groups were responsible for carrying their
clothing, food and tent, all whilst cycling terrain that
covered flat, up and down sections while navigating
effectively.
Cycle touring
The group have just returned from riding the
Mawson trail in the Flinders Ranges. We started our
journey at Blinman and rode to Rawnsley Station,
covering over 100km in just under three days. Our
second day provided the biggest challenge with
over 30mm of rain falling during the day making
the tracks very sticky and muddy. However, with
persistence and tonnes of resilience, the group
powered through the worst of the conditions to arrive
at Brachina Gorge East camp ground. The following
day we rode to Wilpena pound and then onto
Rawnsley Park enjoying breathtaking views of the
surrounding area which is over 600 million years old!
Following the cycling, the group travelled to
Innes National Park. The third day focused on
environmental issues affecting Innes National
Park and travelling to Corny Point for our surfing
component of the course. On our first day of surfing
the conditions were ideal for beginners and everyone
was able to enjoy some 2-5ft breaks.
‘Sound of Music’
2019 Norwood Morialta High School Biennial Musical
HIGH SCHOOL
28
HIGH SCHOOL
Norwood Morialta High School students
performed in the Tony award-winning
musical, ‘The Sound of Music’, known for
its beauty, romance and drama. With a
challenging plot, four part harmonies, whilst
complex in nature, it had fun choreography
numbers and memorable characters.
Students were challenged with serious
themes by switching genres, from a
romance to war drama. While this recent
production of ‘The Sound of Music’ was a
massive undertaking!
The show had a number of complex
choreographed dances showcasing the talents
of the students onstage from Years 8 to Year
12. Many powerful and moving songs were
performed by the well-rehearsed orchestra.
The onstage students looked amazing with
traditional period appropriate hair and
makeup, tying into their numerous costumes
with some actors having up to eight costume
changes. The monstrous task of costuming this
musical was evident with close to 100 different
characters each with their own costume, which
worked to support the actor’s already strong
characterisation. The effortless execution of all
sound effects, the audio quality and precision
timing of all microphones added to an already
amazing show. The technical elements including
lighting and projections combined with the vast
number of impressive set pieces to create both
the 1938 Austrian landscape and architecturally
detailed interiors. The stagehands and props
manager efficiently and speedily supported
the seamless transitions between the many
locations. The 90 plus students working in
onstage and offstage areas were supported in
the lead up by old scholars, staff volunteers and
professionals in the industry.
‘The Sound of Music’ was a demonstration of
the teamwork, dedication and professionalism
by all involved. This was truly a spectacular show
which has been acknowledged by the school
and wider community as a major success.
Well done to all the students, old scholars and
staff involved.
Team Focus – Number 41
At Round 2, 4-5 May the Team Focus were faced
with their first visit to the demanding, rough and
hilly 1.4km circuit around the main streets of Loxton
CBD. With clear skies and warm conditions, the
team was challenged early by a strong outfit from St
Peters College. With a few extra pit stops required by
Team Focus, St Peters managed to edge us out by
4 laps, meaning the team finished 2nd in the Senior
Secondary Category. Aaron Haynes managed the
fastest lap with a time of 1:51.3 averaging 43.3 km/h.
riding over 220km.
Sunday’s race is the big one, 161 teams took to the
1.4km Victoria Park Circuit in fantastic weather and
racing conditions. After 6 hours Team Focus came 2nd
in the Senior Category just one lap behind the winners,
Vector, from St Peters. A great battle all day made for
a thrilling race with a strong fightback by the Focus
boys to be 7 laps down and almost snatching the win
after 190 laps (257 km).
The XP8 boys finished a very respectable 9th in the
Senior Category with a team comprised of riders
of all experience levels across Years 8 to 12. There
were a few rollover and learning experiences had,
however we are excited to see them continue their
development.
Spurl’s Girls, named after Rob Spurling, put in a great
effort in their first race as an all-girls school team.
The 7 girls pulled together to finish 24th in the Senior
Category and 5th in the All Girl’s division. With many
strong performances and many situations which have
provided new learnings, it will be great to see this team
improve at the next event.
We are proud of the extraordinary athletic and
endurance efforts from all our riders, with team
captain Darcy Strudwick taking out the fastest lap of
Boeing Defence Australia Leadership
Mentoring Program
On Thursday 27 June, we had our first session
of the NMHS and Boeing Defence Australia
Leadership Mentoring Program. The program
involves our STEM 1 and STEM 2 classes engaging
with 7 mentors from Boeing on the development
of leadership skills and attributes while also
gaining a better understanding of employment
options and pathways related to STEM learning.
During today’s session, the students met their
mentor that they will be working with for the next
6 session and learnt about their role at Boeing.
Students completed an initial self-assessment of
their leadership skills and then discussed what
HIGH
makes
SCHOOL
a good leader and identified people in
their lives that inspire them.
All up it was a fantastic first session and we look
forward to the next session in Term 3.
We would like to thank Rich, Kelly, Vicki, Lee, Jake,
Uni Connect Electronic
Games
In March this year the STEM 2 class had the
opportunity to visit the Mawson Lakes campus
of University SA to participate in the Uni Connect
Electronic games course. Students were given an
introduction to electronic components and their
function as well as the basics of soldering. They
were then set to task and were able to make
two electronic games to take home. The first, an
interactive electronic game called Penguin Pong,
which allows 2 players to compete in an electronic
game of ping pong. The second electronics
board was a musical keyboard with an octave
of capacitive touch keys. The board doubled as
a Simon Says game where the player will copy a
pattern of flashing lights to play an identical tune.
Leisa Westerhof
STEM Teacher
What we enjoyed?
I enjoyed creating the electronic games, mainly
soldering and putting all the parts together
What challenged us?
Something that challenged me was figuring out the
different colours of the resistors.
What we learnt / took away from the experience?
I learnt that it is really important to make a strong
soldering connection, or the electronic signals won’t
be transferred!
Why should others go on this excursion?
It’s extremely fun and a great way to learn more
about technology and all parts involved.
World of Maths
All Year 8 students were given the opportunity to
participate in hands-on World of Maths sessions
in the Middle Campus Resource Centre on 8 and 9
May.
Students solved a variety of problems, discovered
number patterns, identified geometric properties,
were able to think logically and apply mathematics
to the physical world.
In small groups, students developed their problem
solving and collaboration skills as they attempted to
solve problems at as many stations as possible in
the allotted time limit.
They had an opportunity to acquire a variety of
different skills and strategies needed for problem
solving. It further allowed for students to interact
to boost their confidence, and promote positive
attitudes towards Mathematics.
“
Being a part of the newly
emerging SA space industry at
the Space Forum was exciting,
especially having the opportunity
to meet industry leaders, like Inovor
Techologies, who supply low-cost
nanosatellite technology. I really
enjoyed manning our booth and
sharing our project with others.
A highlight for me was talking
to James Carter, from ‘Nano
Vacuum Australia & NZ’. I learned
that aerospace companies use
advanced vacuum chambers to
simulate a space environment,
where they test their hardware
ensuring that it is space-ready. My
day concluded listening to Smart
HIGH SCHOOL
After the exciting Global Summit in Term 1,
we thought that Term 2 would be relatively
quiet on the International Programs front.
However, this has not been the case with
activities occurring in the background as we
look towards programs occurring in the near
future.
Global Summit Next Steps Conference
A group of five middle campus students, Thomas,
Rubaica, Elaaf, Disha and Summer, worked with
staff over a number of Wednesday afternoons
to plan a conference for all the students who
participated in our inaugural Global Summit. The
“Global Summit Next Steps” conference took
place in the last week of this term with the aim to
progress the work undertaken in Global Summit
Innovation Teams, allowing students to reflect on
ideas which inspired them to make a difference
during the Global Summit and to contemplate
solutions to be developed on a local scale.
The conference, led entirely by the student
planning group, saw much activity as students
made presentations, worked in small groups,
busily writing ideas on butcher’s paper and sticky
notes whilst discussing the problem and solution
they wish to collaboratively pursue. Students
then used a Bone Diagram to further explore the
selected issue and solution. These ideas were
presented to the group who then voted on the
solution to be pursued.
The staff team were very impressed with the
leadership demonstrated by the planning
group and the collaboration, initiative, creativity,
communication and passion displayed by all
conference participants. We look forward to the
implementation of the next stage of this project.
Italy And Japan Sister School Trips - 2019
During the term, the students participating in these
two sister school exchanges have been meeting
regularly with the Staff Leaders in the planning and
lead up to the trips which will be occurring during the
Term 3 holidays.
The Italy trip participants and staff have been
meeting fortnightly. During this time they have
engaged in getting to know you activities, completing
homestay information profiles and shared discussions
about what to expect when they arrive in Italy. During
the last week of the term they were visited by Eliza,
a student from Convitto Nazionale Umberto No 1, our
sister school in Turin, Italy. Eliza had the opportunity
to visit Adelaide and stay with the Chelsea, who her
family hosted during the 2017 sister school exchange.
The group engaged in a question/answer session
with the girls to learn more about Italy, the culture and
our sister school in Torino.
The Japan group who are visiting our sister school,
Takahashi Senior High School, have also completed
their homestay profiles. In addition they been making
paper cranes so they have 1000 for the Hiroshima
Peace Park memorial that they will visit with the
Takahashi students. The students are also planning
their performances for the farewell party at Takahashi.

Farewell to Study Abroad Program students
China Trip – 2020
Planning has commenced for our first ever school
trip to China. This is planned for April in 2020, during
the Term 1 holidays. The itinerary takes in 2 days at
a Chinese Language school where students have
the opportunity to learn or improve their Chinese
language as well as participate in a selection of
cultural activities. There will be extensive touring of
famous sites in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai including
Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Great Wall of
China, Summer Palace, Big Wild Goose Pagoda,
Yu Gardens, and a cruise along the Huangpu River.
Students will also participate in other cultural events
such as the famous puppet shows, Shaolin Monks’
Kung Fu show, Fossil Laboratory program at The
Beijing Palaeontology Museum, Tang Dynasty Music
and Dance Show, Acrobat Show and the Shanghai
Science and Technology Museum.
There will be two scholarships to assist some of the
students to participate in this trip which will essentially
cover most of the cost of the trip as well as subsidies
for approximately 15 students to assist with the cost of
the trip.
A meeting for interested students and families will
be held in Week 2 of next term, Tuesday 30 July at
5.45pm in the MC Lecture Theatre, where further
details of the trip as well as the scholarships will be
discussed.
At the end of the term we farewelled 5 of our
Study Abroad Program students from Switzerland
with an Aussie morning tea including lamingtons,
pavlova, sausage rolls. Some of the students hadn’t
tried pavlova and had mixed thoughts about it!
The students, who had been with us for 12 months,
whilst sad to be leaving, were also looking forward
to meeting up with their families and friends back in
Switzerland. Amongst their highlights, they included
the year 12 Formal as they don’t have such an event
in their schools. Also, a trip to the Outback featured
in one of their happiest memories.. Amongst their
comment it was easy in the morning when they did
Daniel J as he was affectionally known passed away on Thursday 13
June 2019 aged 38.
When it comes to writing we as a group found this difficult for many
reasons, but one fact we know was that when it came to writing
something articulately it was always Daniel we could rely on to write it.
Daniel’s work life was spent constantly entertaining the students and
staff. He would play pranks on the students and would always be the
person to brighten up their day. Daniel would be often described by
the students as the nicest ICT person.
Daniel always loved a food challenge. Anytime a place had a
challenge he would want to try it. Often afterwards he would have
what he called “Food Regret” but there were a couple of times he got
close to finishing the challenge! Daniel also loved a bargain, whether
it be on Gumtree, auction sites, eBay or even Savers! He would come
into work telling us the newest thing he had bought for a bargain.
Some of Daniel’s interests outside of work included Rugby, Volleyball,
Football, gaming and of course spending time with his beloved Ellie
Daniel is one of the most kind hearted people we have ever met.
One of Daniel’s saying we will miss was “I bought this with my own
