Children’s Art Contest I Spy Nature in My Town Reception– Tuesday, April 2 6:30 pm Children’s Room The Women’s Club of Caldwell and the Library are sponsoring a Children’s Art Contest during the month of April. Children in grades 1-3 who attend Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, and Wilson Elementary Schools as well as Trinity Academy are invited to create an original piece of artwork using the theme I Spy Nature in My Town. Judging took place on Thursday, March 28 and the winning artwork will be displayed on the glass wall in the Children’s Dept. during the month of April. Contest winners and their families are invited to the reception where children will receive their awards. Alice’s Ordinary People Thursday, April 4, 6:00 pm Community Room Award-winning film director Craig Dudnick will present a film-lecture about his new documentary which focuses on Alice Tregay, an unsung heroine of the Civil Rights Movement, who refused to stand still for injustice and brought others together to bring about change. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. Martin Luther King to the election of Barack Obama. Her great contributions in the field of politics is the thread that connects the two. Dudnick will speak about the circumstances which drew Alice Tregay to the movement and how he came to make the film. A film discussion will follow the screening. Sign-up online @ https://bccls.libcal.com/event/5167202 Health and Wellness Fair Saturday, April 6 11:00 am –1:00 pm The West Caldwell Library will be having a Health and Wellness Fair throughout the Library. Local vendors who are participating include: Chef V, Touch of Well Being, Jag Physical Therapy, Stretch Lab, the Shop-Rite dietician, Club Pilates, Field Goods (fresh food delivered to you), Salt Cave, safety tips from the West Caldwell Police and Fire Department, free screenings for blood pressure, lung function screening, baseline concussion for child athletes, HepB/HepC testing, FIT colon Cancer Screenings. There will also be fun-filled activities for children such as face painting and crafts. Raffles, demos and free giveaways will be part of the fair. 2
Visiting the Harp Sunday, April 7, 2:00 pm Community Room Local harpist and retired Methodist pastor Frederick Boyle will present a concert. He will perform popular American folk music and spiritual songs on his Celtic harp accompanied by guitarist Val Gray. Some of the featured songs include Blowin’ in the Wind, Edelweiss, I’ll Fly Away, Ash Grove, Rose of Allendale, Shenandoah, and Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Sign-up online @ https://bccls.libcal.com/event/5167348 A Salute to Patti Page and Doris Day: Songbirds of the Fifties Sunday, April 28, 2:00 pm Community Room Equity actress and professor, Dr. Diane Cypkin will sing the hits of these two iconic artists and share their personal stories to bring their music and their era to life. Songs to be performed include Tennessee Waltz, Doggie in the Window, and Old Cape Cod (sung by Patti Page) as well as Que Sera Sera, Secret Love and It’s Magic (sung by Doris Day). Pianist Lena Panfilova will accompany Dr. Cypkin. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Sign-up online @ https://bccls.libcal.com/event/5167384 History of the American Women’s Rights Movements Thursday, May 2, 6:30 pm Community Room Retired History professor Eugene Lieber will present a slide-lecture which will focus on suffragette efforts from colonial evangelical roles to Seneca Falls, NY in the mid-19 th century to the early 20 th century. Feminist activism in the 1960s and 1970s to the current “me too” movement will also be explored during this overview of the historical peaks of organizing women. Featured hits include Piano Man, Uptown Girl, Just the Way You Are, New York State of Mind and Movin’ Out. Glantz will also share anecdotal stories about Billy Joel’s life and music career. Some popular music selections will be included. The soloists will be accompanied by pianist Inna Leytush. This concert is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the WCPL.
