DERWENT VALLEY
& CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
To the west of Hobart, you’ll find the scenic
Derwent Valley, rugged Central Highlands, and
charming Southern Midlands. Enjoy picturesque
scenery and an array of landscapes as you explore,
including tranquil rivers, rolling hills, giant forests,
sprawling hop fields, farmland, and snow-capped
mountain peaks. Nature lovers will be in their
element, with the Mt Field National Park, Junee
Cave State Reserve, Southwest National Park,
and Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park
to explore.
The attractions are just as varied as the scenery.
Taste whisky, go antiquing, walk alongside the
Derwent River (or glide out in a kayak), pick fresh
raspberries, spot a platypus, take a cooking class,
and visit the salmon ponds where the first brown
trout were hatched in the 1800s.
Visit Strathgordon and truly appreciate the power
of nature. Experience trout fishing paradise in
the Central Highlands, treat yourself to a relaxing
farmstay, see the giant pipes at Tarraleah, and
stand in the geographical heart of Tasmania at
Derwent Bridge.
